Do you think this would offend the artist?

Okies, heres the deal. My tat artist and I have been working with my design for a while, months actually. I supplied him with tons of pictures, he did a trace of the tat I already have that the new one is going to wrap around...and we still can't quite get it together. I *know* I am being nit picky about the design, but dammit its going to be on me forever and I want it to be perfect.

Problem is I think the artist has tweaked the design too far away from my original image, which is artwork of my favorite artist. And I love that artists style so much, I really don't want it changed that drastically (but I understand why the tat artist needs to do his own thing to it, its like asking me to dance to someone elses choreography) Now I have spoken with my fav artist (same artist that did the original image) and they are wiling to do a commission for me, an idea that really excites me.

But, would this be rude to do? I don't want to offend my tattoo artist by going off and having the design finished by someone else, but I don't want to continue to ask them to tweak a design that just isn't going where I want it to.

In hindsight, I would have asked for the comission from the get go, but I wasn't aware that the artist would be willing to do this. I still want the tat artist I picked to do the tattooing (and this second artist is *not* a tattoo artist, just to clarify), but would this be a tattoo world faux paus? I feel really bad, because I know how it feels to create something for someone that they're less than thrilled with.

I guess worst case scenrio is he gets mad and I have to find another tattoo artist, but I don't want to peeve him off and sit under his gun, lol. Whadya guys think?

IMO, how much time and effort has the tattooist put into your drawing? Have you paid for their time? I've done many drawings over and over and over only to hear, "Sorry, I just wanted an idea. I can't get the tattoo right now." To me, that's a waste of time I could have spent with family, other art, etc. Offer some compensation to the tattooist, get the original artist to do what you want. You do need to explain to the tattooist that the original artist has made you an offer that you just can't refuse. If it was me, I would say, "Thanks for paying me and understanding how much I put in the drawings." I would give you back all the drawings and things you brought. And I would look forward to seeing what the artist came up with and making it work for you. I would LOVE to talk to the original artist and you to make sure EVERYONE is happy! Bringing art to life is a tough, emotional draining experience no matter who does it.

I put in a down payment for the drawing, saftey net for him in case he works on my drawing and never see's me again and if I get the tattoo it goes towards the cost. But I was planning on bringing dinner and brownies or something in, along with a nice tip ;)

I'm not so sure on how much he's worked on the drawing really. I gave him a ton of reference pictures and told him 'I want hair like this, upper bodies like this, and tails like this.' I even took pictures of shit taped to me so he could see the layout I wanted. He did a drawing, which had some problems, we talked it over and he said he'd make the corrections and said I could have all my pictures back. So when I came to see the rework, I was a little stunned when the new design was in exactly the opposite way I had wanted it (I wanted the work to go under my old tattoo and he had it going over). So I had to re-explain the whole layout, and I felt bad because it was a really cool drawing but it wasn't what I had wanted. It kinda had me 'loosing heart' on the whole project because...I guess I'm just not feeling it with the drawings.
I want what I want, but I don't want to offend him either. I'm not sure if I should give the other artist (a popular fantasy artist) the go-ahead and wait to see what she comes up with, or if I should tell the tat artist first 'Hold the phone, I've got someone else working on it. I still want you to do the tattoo and I'll pay you for the time you spent on the drawings.'
Regardless, the quest for the perfect tattoo continues. This would be so much easier if I could just draw whats in my head!

As a tattooist, if I can get the art work from the original artist ~ way better than trying to figure it out. Would it be possible to get both together? For me, that would be the BEST.

I don't think I could get them both together, but...

... The orginal artist sent me a sketch that she's going to finish off as an ink drawing and 'ITS PERFECT!!' OMG, I just love it so much. I was terrified when I opened the attatchment because I was afraid of repeat let down after much detailed descriptions like with the tat artist, but she completely nailed it. I had also asked for some less distinct touches that I couldn't quite see in my head and what she came up with was better than that! I'm so happy, and I'm actually looking forward to getting my tattoo again.

It also makes the decision easy for me, I have to tell my tat artist that I have a new image for him to use. I'm a bit nervous still, but I figure if he's overly offended I guess he's not the artist for me. I fully intend to reimburse him for his work on the drawing so as long as theres no issues with artistic ego's I think we'll be good to go. Thanks for the advice!
