Just curious if anyone was as fickle as I am with picking out a tattoo...whenever I think I found something I want, I change my mind again. I know tattoos are a very personal thing, but does anyone have any tips or suggestions on how I can get over being so indecisive?

It only took me 3 years to decide exactly what i wanted :)
Take your time, and maybe talk about it with someone you know put all of your ideas onto little bits of paper and mix and match everything till you find a combo that you like.

You could also post all your ideas on here as well and get tribe peeps opinions, if ya like...

Three years huh? I feel much better. I will definitely post some ideas...once I decide what ideas I like!

        Hey there!

I've wanted a tattoo for years but haven't been able to decide either. I've even gone into tattoo shops (or are the parlors?) and looked through books of photos... I just can't decide either. For a long time I wanted a cherry with a bite out of it... then after a while of not getting it I wasn't so sure. Now I'd like something Celtic and/or Hindu in design... I'd also like it to have something to do with my three daughters.... UGH... I just don't know... Every year I say I'll do it for my birthday... well my b-day is a week and a half away...

Another big sticking point for me is deciding who to have do it... Hopefully you'll be more decisive than me... Sometimes I regret not just biting the bullet and doing it...

If there is subject matter that you are interested in, read up on it. Study the crap out of it. Chances are that there will be an image that stays with you. Also, most of the reputable artists that you'll find will be willing to draw up a custom piece, which is much more significant (IMO) than one that you can pick off of a wall and know that 150 other people are walking around with the exact same thing. It will typically cost more to draw up a custom design but that way you can incorporate different things such as representations of children.

Don't just jump into a tattoo. A design will find you when you're ready. :)

I waited 43 years to get my first tat. Good thing, too.. or I would have ended up with some dopey mushroom or hummingbird on my 1970s ass. I can only shudder at what such a tat would look like today. A very wrinkled mushroom, or a deflated bird, with drooping wings.:)) I remember when the first tattoo shops for women were started in San Diego in the '70's, and while it was a cool idea, I felt the art left much to be desired. We were limited, or that is how I remember it.
So, take your time... don't rush into anything. Start out small, and don't worry if you have some doubts. I always have some just as I am getting it inked in. After my initial nervousness, I end up falling madly in love with them. the giatn one of the Goddess on my right arm scared me right after it was done, and while I had loved her madly on the paper, I kind of freaked out at how large it was! I still get so many compliments on it now, and within a couple of days after getting inked, got used to having it staring at me every single day.

6years...and still haven't gotten one yet. However, hoping to remedy that by the end of this weekend. lol

It is such a personal thing and it is PERMANENT so it is important to make sure you pick the right art for you. Kind of like picking the right spouse...you want to make sure it is something you won't be tired of by next week.
    Good luck
    • Try looking up Mehndi designs

Hi NIghtshade! I keep finding you. We should be friends. When I was researching Mehndi designs for a baby shower, I came upon many websites with beautiful drawings. My tattoo artist and I collaborated on my designs. I started out with my drawings & often times they had to be readjusted because the skin is obviously not flat. When a design didn't fit exactly I asked her to make the direction she thought the design should follow & then I would draw the new part following her direction. My back piece started small & then wrapped itself around my hips going down my obliques & then I went up toward the ribs. The final piece is beautiful, but it does make costuming other than Tribal difficult. If you do cabaret work, you may be limiting yourself for work.

Lucky for me I can draw, but the Mehndi websites have great ideas. I also have a tatt of my husky that passed away just under my neck in the back & a wolf and ravens on my shoulder. The later piece started out small (3" aroung) & slowly grew. I think that tatts are like potato chips. You can't just have one.

Took me forever to figure out the concept of what I wanted, and then I sat on it for a few years to make sure I still liked it. Then once I decided to actually get it, I wussed out for months.

I suggest that you focus on a basic idea, then do a ton of research and talk to some artists (tattoo and otherwise) who have a good eye for graphics.

When you know, you'll know. Indecisiveness is your mind's way of telling you it isn't the one for you. Trust your gut on this one. Gypsey

I agree don't ever let go of that indecisiveness just to get SOMETHING. Ask anyone who got something to get anything if they like what they got after even a year. You will get very few yes's.

I got my first four pieces done in a two month span (all smaller), but had thought about them for a while before. Then I waited 8 years before getting my next piece and I am so happy I did. I had a lot of original ideas that if I had gone with just any of them I would not be nearly as happy as I am with the piece I waited to feel 100% about.

It will come and you might be shocked how quick you know its the right one when it comes to you.

I just walked out of a tattoo parlor tonight with a drawing from the artist and no ink on my skin. I have been trying to find the right design for 5 years. A week ago I put down the a deposit and commissioned an artist to create a celtic knot for me. It was beautiful but didn't speak to me. So, I've taken it home to work on it and see if I can make it what I want. Yes, I'm out the deposit but I'd rather that than have a tattoo I don't like. I'm taking my time because I know when the time is right it will all come together. Good luck on your quest.

Mine is the chi ro, early Christian symbol. I felt that it's a forever thing. Never put a guy's name on you, your kids are forever. I have since expanded my spiritual feelings and though I am primarily Christian, I feel that God is too big for one religion. I'm not a religion person, took me a long while to figure it out.
So that said, do I regret what I had done? Not at all, but I say that your life will change who you are now. What ever you get, make sure it's something you will be happy with at age 80 and know that you will have no regrets. If that takes a longer while then take that time. It's a marriage that can't be undone! LOL!

My rule only three types of names are "safe"

      1. Your Kids, since this is a love that never goes away
      2. Your Parents, if you made it to adulthood with a close enough relationship to even think of this and no bitter resentment towards your upbringing ;), then you will probably hold that relationship for the rest of your adulthood
      3. Dead People, since memorials can be very healing and whats the likelyhood the dead will piss you off.
