Finally, I'm going to get my nose pierced. I am 99% sure I want the right nostril done with a nice, discrete screw/stud thing. I like the history behind the left side but I've not really found much about what the right side signifies, if anything. I have questions! Anyone know what the right side nostrip piercing signifies in different cultures or pop culture? What is the smallest gauge I can get my nose pierced with? I'm going to go on a flight in 3 weeks, are they gonna have a hissy fit at security with the extra piercing? Any words of advice besides the obvsious aftercare/don't sleep on it etc? I'm so freakin excited I can't stand it.

I've flown five or six times with my nose stud and never had any problems with security so you should be fine! I have a stud on my right nostril and I love it!

12 weeks is what my piercer told me to wait before changing it

The only significance of the sides that I've seen is the left side is feminine and the right is masculine. I think most Indian women have the left side done for that reason, but don't quote me ;)

I got my left side done because I glued a small rhinestone to each side and it just sat better on that side. It had a nice little spot for the piercing to nestle it seemed. I'm also planning on a having my tragus done and that will be on the right so that just confirmed placement as I don't want to look too 'heavy' on one side.

Mine is an 18 gauge. Most jewelry on the market is either 20g or 18g, I picked the 18 because it poses less risk of rejecting, and a larger hole will not close up as fast. The nose heals *fast*, especially the inside. I've had to sort of 'repierce' the inside when simply changing jewelry, its that quick. So thats why I wanted the bigger gauge available.

If your going with a screw it does take some getting used to, theres a trick to getting it in and out. The first time I took mine out I got it out pretty easy but then couldn't figure out how to get it back in. You've gotta get real friendly with your nostril to pull the screw side around ;)

The soreness in mine went away by the 2nd week, but my piercer told me to wait 6 weeks. It varies from person to person, piercer to piercer. Its probably been one of my easiest piercings.

Good luck to you, I'm sure you'll love it!

I don't know anything about right side left side stuff. I think it's just preference. I have my left side, but I know BDers who have r or l.
No security problems. I don't know what the gauge is.. very small though.
Oh, personally, I would wait 3 months before changing it out. My nose piercing was the hardest healing process of all my piercings. My nipples healed better and faster, lets just put it that way. But, every body is different.
Hot compress' are amazing, you should do them once a day for a few weeks after you slow down on normal seasalt care.

Mine is 18 G. And no ploblems flying. Actually at one security point I beeped and the lady took me aside and it turned out it was my zipperpul on my sweater that beeped not my nose. the funny thing was the lady who scanned me was heavily pierced herselve. So she was realy nice about it.

haha...the last time I flew, my nipple rings set off the beeper and I had to go behind the curtain and flash security...both ladies, thank goodness...I got rid of them, tho, after about the third time my sweetheart's string wraps on his dreads got caught in them...NOT worth the trouble!

Congrats! The wierdness in the nose goes away quick, which is good, just try not to forget about it when your towel drying your face after a shower ;) Hooked myself a couple times doing that and about yanked it out.

I did it! I did the right side because I thought it looked better on me. So far no real pain or discomfort, no swelling. Just this strange feeling inside with the screw every now and then. Wouldn't you know I'd get an allergy attack the night after the piercing! I got an 18 gauge, plain little thing. I figured I'd go for subtle at first until I got used to it. Its actually a lot bigger than I had imagined, and bigger on my nose than it looked when I chose it! I'm so happy tho, its so pretty. I'm going to start shopping now for extra bling!

    Thanks for all the advice!

      Hello!
I noticed when it comes to nose piercings in India, nose piercings on the left are mainly done in the North and nose piercings on the right (or both nostrils) are mainly Southern. This was reliable enough that I could ask a woman if she was from the North or South based on what nostril was pierced. Mine is pierced on the left, so I was constantly asked about it while in Southern India.
      Just an interesting observation.

I could be wrong on this, but I've heard that the right side signifies that you're married and the left side that you're single...but I do agree with the masculine/feminine thing...but that usually goes by your dominant side...it's opposite if you're left handed...

Either way, I think it's just a personal choice...I did my right side, just cuz of the feminine aspect, but to each their own, right? :-)

i have both sides done, so i dont know about which is better to get hehehe...

cartilage piercings are slow to heal, so get it done with a nostril screw that you like, and leave it alone for a good while! i got the 'bump' on both of mine as they were healing (angle of the piercing vs the way the gem on the end sat on my nose caused some pressure) but it went away on both sides with patience, sea salt soaks, and leaving it alone!

18ga is pretty standard for nostril piercings, but they might have smaller, 20ga. depends on the jewelry you pick out.

ive NEVER had any problem with piercings and metal detectors in airports, and i have 4 genital piercings (two of which are 8ga, the others 10, so thats a bit of jewelry), and have had my nipples done in the past. theyve never even beeped with the wand...im a bit shocked by Rebekahs story! you shouldnt have had to show them your piercings, jeez!

RE: airport security...I don't have piercings other than my ears but I DO wear a stainless steel eternity collar. It's locked on and I don't have the key. It has never set off airport security. Maybe cause of the material.
