ankle tattoo in the workplace

topic posted Sat, April 12, 2008 - 10:07 AM by  Anju
I have a question for people - I really want to get an ankle tattoo, but I love to wear business skirts to work. And though most people dont' do this anymore, I also like ot wear sheer pantyhose with it. I'm wondering if people here have experience with how employers have reacted to a small ankle tattoo at work. I realize I could just cover up with foundation or long pants....but wondering if my ideal situation of everyone letting my ankle tattoo alone while I wear skirts would be unrealistic? I'm planning on working for the federal government, not in any field that requires daily customer interaction, rather research or policy stuff. If I did go out in public on business I would definitely cover the tattoo.

Btw, I'm sorry because I did post a similar topic a while back - but I would love to hear your opinions/experiences specifically on the ankle tat - just because they are sooooo common/mainstream now, I thought the reactions to it might be different. Maybe people are turning a blind eye to them....

Well, my experiences with women having ankle tats in the workplace is that is a total non-issue. It seems to have become so commonplace in my area & the industries I work in (technology) to have a tattoo that people seem surprised if you DON'T have a tattoo. As long as it's tasteful, I can't imagine someone having an issue with it. As you say, you can always cover it up if you need to. Go for it!

I would check and see if your work place has regulations in place about tattoos. I work for the state and we do. Not against per say, but no obscene or vulgar images showing. I have 12 tattoos, 3 below the knees, and I haven't had any problems. Good luck!

Cool - thanks! I'm currently looking for work, so can't check policies quite yet, but it sounds like it will be fine:-)

i work for a public library, have 2 large leg tattoos, one of which goes around my ankle. here's what i do:
at interviews, i cover them. (pants socks, whatever). they should be hiring me for my skills, nothing else. once i'm hired, i slowly let the tats show (once they get to know me and know my work-- that's really what they should be concerned with, right?). i cover them when on business meetings, but don't bother otherwise -- i work in adminstration, so i am not in the public eye daily.

LOL - that's exactly what my plan was going to be - cover the tats and all but two lobe piercings for my interviews:-) I already have a nose ring, but think I can get away with that for being Indian. But if they saw my pinna piercing as well, it would probably change their minds. Anwyays, I'll slowly start revealing stuff once they've gotten to know me better.
