So, i planned out my whole side and was super freaking stoked about it then *&%$(&*$(&*$()&... what i want is WHITE... I asked my artist how white sits in the skin, and he says, without lots of care (even 1 day with no sunscreen) it changes color, more... eggshell. And that its not a smooth color, that white looks chalky. He says that white makes a good highlight color only for hte most part..
Is there any way to make white look good? Like if you add a little blue or yellow or something to make it a reaaaaally pale color and not exactly white? Or should I just chuck the whole idea out the window? I wanted stargazer lillies. I think they are so beautiful. But... white. I dont want to just leave the white parts blank either so that they are skin colored. :(
Have you ever seen a white tattoo? Did it look like crap?

Re: The 'white' dilema
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 3:41 PMI know a really white guy who got a Renaissance jousting scene across his ribs and stomach. It was mainly white, yellow, and blue. He said it was super painful to keep going back for touch-ups on all the light colors, because they would start looking chalky on his pale skin, or just not show up.
I'd fade some pink into it. Stargazers often have that pinkish tinge. I agree, don't just leave the white parts blank. Then again, there are some lovely orange lilies *G*... -

Re: The 'white' dilema
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 9:10 AMthe first tattoo i got i wanted it to be white, but my artist talked me out of it. in hindsight, though, he wasn't a great artist and i could have got the same look by adding a light tint, which would have been fine for me.
how much do you trust your artist? ask him/her for their opinion and see what you two can come up with. there might be an alternative out there that makes sense for your stargazers. maybe a grey-scale with a light accent? -

Wed, April 9, 2008 - 9:12 AMI am with Bo on this one, you might want to get the pink shading along the edges.

Re: The 'white' dilema
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 9:15 AMTreja--I want stargazer lilies too! I'm planning that one out still...I also want it to be very light but not all white. We should totally compare one day (although it will probably be a year+ before I get mine). If it goes as planned they'll be on the inside of my arms.
As for white...I have a friend who has very thin white tattoos that are hard to notice until she tans up in the summer. I've seen them for years now and they still look amazing. But they are literally lines, almost like scars, so there's less concern about shape and shading.
Also, the second part of my planned tattoo (5 hours from my appt as I type!!) is white with some blue tones, and my artist said it would be fine although sunlight will change it some. Since that one will be on my shoulder where I tend to get lots of sun, I may go with very pale blue instead. -

Re: The 'white' dilema
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 10:41 AMOOoh! We totally have to compare! I dont want mine all white either, I want the bright vibrant center. I trust my artist 300% and didnt actually tell him my idea yet. I think I might go with the light tint idea. Mine are going to be on my side, from my boob down to my hip. So, they will only see sun in the summer and Im really good with sunscreen. (Its gonna be about a year for me too Im sure).
Ive seen the orange lillies Bo, they are gorgeous, but im sooooo stuck on the stargazers lol -

Re: The 'white' dilema
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 11:20 AMI am getting lillies on my back, from right hip to left shoulder. 4 of them (one for each of my children) and one of them will be a stargazer (for my only daughter) and one of them will be a tigerlily (since my 3 child is nicknamed Tigger) and another 2 that I am still trying to look into.

Re: The 'white' dilema
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 10:47 AMThe white in my almost 7 year old tattoos has barely changed color. When I use white on my husband, I usually have to re-do it and it still changes due to the pigment in his skin.
Tattooing, tattoos is a place where EVERYONE is unique, with a few 'averages.'

Re: The 'white' dilema
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 10:47 AMoh yeah, I've always wanted to do an all white tattoo since seeing one in a tattoo magazine. It looked like etched glass, beautiful.

Re: The 'white' dilema
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 11:07 AMWhen I talked to my artist a few years back about a white tattoo I wanted she talked me out of it for the same reasons everyone has said here. She suggested scarification instead. Would that be an option for you? -

Wed, April 9, 2008 - 2:54 PMNah, not really into it and i dont think it would look right for what I want. -

Re: The 'white' dilema
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 4:52 PMmy friend got a moon tatt and blended the white w/ the blue, but you can tell it's a pale blue, not white, and it doesn't look weird (yet anyway).

Re: The 'white' dilema
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 6:30 AMI asked my artist about 'whiting' as well. I wanted to do tribal patterns in white rather than black on my hands and forearms.
He said no way no how, and that he refused to do something that had a 50/50 chance of looking like crap. White ink on skin has the same potential bleaching hair has. It can 'turn' hair turns brassy. White ink can turn nicotine stain yellow.
Even babying it, it is subject to taking on your skins coloring, and your natural skin tone causing it to appear more... beige.
I would switch to a really pale periwinkle or even lighter. A silvery gray blue. That way you don't have to worry about going yellowy since the blue is a cool color (as opposed to the warmth of a white turned yellowish brownish)
I was bummed too when I found out. Then their extreme mods guy offered to do the same designs with scarification and removals, and I'd have to say that shocked me into just not thinking about it for awhile. -

Re: The 'white' dilema
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 8:44 AMI think thats what Im going to do, either PALE blue, or light pink. im going to draw it out in both colors and see what looks better, then take it to my artist and get his take on it all.
Thanks guys!! -

Re: The 'white' dilema
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 2:58 PMI had a pale blue lotus on my wrist & it looked like crap - really chalky, even after 2 touch ups. Eventually had it coloured purple. Different on different skin I think - I think it's a bit of a gamble! -

Re: The 'white' dilema
Fri, April 11, 2008 - 11:22 AMI recently posted a pic in this tribe as well as my profile of my tattoo which is colored in with light grey. My artist mixed mostly white with a touch of black. It's subtle on my skin but still effective. It might help you get an idea of what blending a color might look like. -
