It finally happened to me...I had a reaction to hair dye...itchy head...nothing horrific like swelling of my face or anything...but...the newest tattoos on my body...swelled...made me think that I'm starting to show early signs of having a full blown allergic reaction to dye...I've found some nice natural dark henna to use...but...I wonder if my days of using commerical dyes are done...
Any of you have this reaction...what was your solution to the problem?

When you say '...nice natural dark henna...", I must elaborate that henna comes in two colours neutral or red.
The red can come in different shades and intensities depending upon the country it is grown in and the time of year it is harvested.
Example. Pakistani henna is red, it is your typical red henna. Yemen henna tends to leave a more raspberry shine.
When henna packaging says winered henna, dark blond henna, etc... chemicals have been added.
Like I said different countries of origin even different harvests will yield a different however slight sheen but certainly not enough to merit a name change on the package as Dark blond Henna, or Winered or Chestnut Henna.
Read your label and make sure that sll there is in there is henna , pure and untouched henna.
The best thing is to buy henna from a knowledgeable dealer. A good source is www.hennafor hair.com run by Catherine Cartwright-Jones. She lives and breaths henna and realy is an authorithy in the field.

About five years ago (pre-ink) I noticed that after I had my hair dyed in a salon, the lymph nodes on the back of my head swelled up. Scary! My solution is to either use Aveda dyes (I found them to be much easier on me with no reaction) or to get low lights/dark lights where the dye does not touch my scalp. Both have worked well with no reaction...although due to money and laziness I haven't dyed my hair in a good long while.

As for the tattoos...I've noticed that sometimes mine swell a bit but it always seems really random. I asked my artist about it and he didn't seem overly concerned. But my full dyeing days are over, I think.

yes i had my first reaction to hair dye a few years ago. it coincided with resuming tattooing for the first time in years. the tattoo i was getting at the time reacted weirdly & i had never had that before.

my reaction was very severe. massive swelling & pus filled lesions. there are loads of websites about it.

i still seem to be able to tattoo but not hair dye.

i now use cosmetic grade henna.

i had been dying & tattooing for 20 plus years so this was all a surprise.

    More info, Gia?
Like, did you use a different brand of hair dye than usual? Did it drip onto your tattoo? Did you have any open lesions on your scalp taht the dye got into?

Habibi, the purest form of Henna is body art quality henna, nothing but clean good henna. Cosmetic henna can still contain chemicals.
www.hennaforhair.com is the safest place to buy body art quality henna.
Please all hennas are not created equal.

First...thank you all for your imput. For the poster who asked about the henna...this is where I bought the henna from :www.sababotanical.com/abouthenna.html . It is darker because they're using other botanticals in addition to the henna to get darker colors...no chemicals...or so they say.
Habibi...what is the name of the henna you use?
Yes, I did use a 'new' brand...I used to use Garnier Nutrisse and didn't have a reaction, but switched to Nice-n-Easy 10 min for the last 2-3 dye jobs...the first two didn't cause the reaction (although the 2nd did make my scalp itchy for a few days). NONE got on my tattoos, open cuts or anything else...just my hair. As a matter of fact, it was my most recent tattoos...the flowers on my legs that really became irritated and started swelling in different places within the tattoo.

Oh, eeeeek!!! Nice-n-Easy is a very old formulation...I'm not surprised you had a reaction...

Try getting your regular brand and do a skin patch test in the method recommended in the instructions...Garnier is a permanent colour and more likely to cause reactions...so if you still have a reaction, you might try a semi-permanent in a milder formulation...I like the Natural Instinct ones...but still do a skin patch test, first...you may be able to work your problem out without giving up your desired colouring forever...

I love henna, but it just doesn't get vibrant enough for my liking...I like a deep, vibrant red and I was just getting a bit of an dark auburn hue...so I do henna for the healthy benefits and a semi-permanent colour for the tone...

dark henna usualy has indigo added to it in order to make the color nice and dark, and even sometimes BLACK!

I've been thinking about trying it for some "lowlights" in my hair.

I love me some indigo! =)

And henna is now my dye of choice. soooo glorious!

Oh, well, it doesn't get really dark...the one I used was all henna, but with my hair being kinda naturally dark, it just didn't show up the way I wanted...I'd imagine if I were to get a different formulation, I could probably get a colour that would make me happy...but I can't order things online, right now and places to find henna around here are very scarce...in fact, when I got my last batch, I got the very last of what the woman was carrying...she said she just didn't sell enough of it to justify having it in the store anymore...*sigh*...I plan on having my hair dreaded when I get back to Oz, but as many places as you can get henna around where we live, I'll likely grab some up before the dreads go in...much better selection than what I've been able to find in my neck of the woods...

And, wow...I do ramble on...please forgive me, my brain is kinda on autopilot from about 15 hrs of driving in a 24 hr span...=p

Rebekah...I'm not sure about the semi-perm colors...sounds like twice the work and twice the hair damage...the Garnier was the color I used previous and DIDN'T have a reaction...

            henna for hair site,,,,,,,

"Para-Phenylenediamine (PPD) is an ingredient found in most hair dye
whether it is purchased at a store or an upscale salon. There are a few
brands that do not contain this ingredient but may contain other harmful
or highly allergic substances such as nickel. What is PPD? It is an
aniline dye also known as a coal tar dye. Basically, it is petroleum.
What is it used for? It is a substance used in rubber chemicals, photo
developer, oil, gasoline, ink, textile dyes, dark cosmetics and hair
            dye.

This ingredient goes by many names such as PPD, 1,4-Benzenediamine and
numerous other aliases. For a list of alternate names please see
www.dermnetnz.org/dna.acd/ppd.html . The National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) stated that you should "prevent
skin contact" with PPD in order to avoid the "symptoms: Irritation
pharynx, larynx; bronchial asthma; sensitization dermatitis" (NIOSH,
www.cdc.gov/niosh/npg/npgd0495.html ). Recently, PPD received bad press
when it was used to darken henna tattoos and caused numerous disfiguring
scars. The FDA states "So-called "black henna" may contain the "coal
tar" color p-phenylenediamine, also known as PPD. This ingredient may
cause allergic reactions in some individuals. The only legal use of PPD
in cosmetics is as a hair dye. It is not approved for direct application
to the skin" (FDA, www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/cos-tatt.html ). However,
when most hair dye is applied it does come in direct contact with the
scalp and quite often touches the skin on the forehead and ears. Hair
dye is in direct contact with the skin for sometimes up to 30 minutes.
The FDA apparently feels that it is unsafe to use PPD for a tattoo but
safe enough to apply directly onto your scalp."

iiifff this is what you are reacting to it will get worse & there is no cure. iff the product asks for a skin test it does not matter it calls itself "natural" you will react.

the whole "natural" makeup, hair color, hygiene products on the market are by & large phony.

i loved dying my hair. the faker the better but my reaction was frightening. swollen eyes for a week, pus boils, sears so swollen the were splitting.

i've become very radical about this. i'm not pro/anti chemical/ natural products i'm anti-lying & many *natural* products lie & that is dangerous to me.

if you want to see the results of henna on brown / black hair see my profile. i've been using it for uuhh 3 years.

Gia, the semi-permanent colours are less damaging because they don't lift colour out of the hair, they just deposit...which is why you can't make your hair lighter with a semi, you can only go darker or a different tone...and I'm only talking doing this every six weeks or so...

As far as the henna goes, I'd love to be able to use just henna...and I know there's one type that they have on the hennaforhair site that I'd like to try, but alas, I cannot order online...but the type that I am able to get gives enough of a red tone that it doesn't defeat my purposes, completely...I can get the healthy benefits that the henna impart and then the tone I want with my semi...I actually use a semi that I can't get here...I have to get my fiance to send it to me when I need it...(stupid slow visa process)

I've stopped using permanent colours at all...I used to use a permanent colour about every 6 months to make my hair a bit lighter, so that I could get the red tone that I wanted...then I'd use a semi in between times to sustain that colour...so I've at least gotten rid of the permanent colour...those are the worst, since they contain both ammonia and peroxide in rather high levels...hence the horrible fumes...

Okay...I do ramble on...but my hair is the longest and healthiest it's ever been in my life (I'm almost 43)...so, I must be doing something right?

I've been getting inked, doing ink since '01. Being changing my hair for decades. Why are you using box products to dye (stuff from Wal-Mart) when there's so many beauty supply places and the internet. Think about why it costs so much for your stylist to use a product compared to what's in a dept. store?

it's the same stuff. the only difference is salon/ beauty supply store stuff is stronger.

the reason beauticians charge so much is labor & booth rent or the shop just sets a rate.

i have a beautician comes to my house to cut my son's hair, we've discussed this. she says basically i'm eefffed.

not everybody has a reaction. it can happen the 1st time or the 100th time. it was 20 years of dying before i did.

*wondering about it being the same* My beautician has given me things, and they are MUCH better, not just stronger. I've seen folks try to use both box color (dept. store stuff) and 'professional' color with horrible results and supposedly the same color...

Ye, alot of the colours you get done in a salon are just better quality...and there's quite a few that you can't get, even in a beauty supply shop...

I remember one line that we used to use in a salon I worked in...Logics by Clairol...had both permanent and semi-permanent varieties...these did not come in specific hair 'colours', but in levels and tones...from a level 12, which was the lightest blonde to a level 2, which was dark, dark!!! Then the tones, which worked on the colour wheel...think we all know how that works if you remember kindergarten...these colours had to be custom mixed and you could create the exact level and tone that you wanted...I used a level 6 red-violet and a level 4 red to get the most gorgeous shade of burgundy red on my hair...oh...and I only used the semi.

          *sigh*...gosh, I miss those colours!

I had to sign a release one time at the beauty college when I mixed colors. Of course it came out as I expected. LOL
