I had the pleasure of meeting a very nice 5 year old girl this past weekend - I stayed with her grandma, Elizabeth Mahina, for Tribal Caravan. This charming girl was intrigued by all the sparkley tattoos (read: henna with glitter on it) she saw on bellydancers, so she got her own little flower on her wrist. She was comparing it to my arm, peering back and forth, and finally she reached out and... poked my tattoo. She rubbed my arm, trying to figure out why she couldn't feel my tattoo like she could feel the henna on her skin, which was dry and raised at that point. She then poked each of the red spots on my tattoo in turn. It was cute and funny. I explained that it was part of my skin, like dye on fabric, but I figure she was a little too young to grasp that concept. But how sweet!
Another experience that made me think about kids and body mods was meeting my tattoo artist's daughter. Her mommy brought her in to visit while dad was working on my arm. The little girl leaned through the window in the booth to say hello - and she grabbed dad's 1" ear plugs and pulled herself in like they were handles! The motion seemed familiar to her, and I would guess she holds on to his ears a lot. It made me smile, because I realized that to her, his gauged ears are totally normal.
I think kids are wonderful for the way they will accept things that adults consider weird. I had black and pink fake dreads for about a year, and kids just wanted to touch them and play with them, but their parents were horrified that their kids would even dream of commenting on how "pretty" my pink hair was. I let the kids play with it just to make their parents more uncomfortable.

Tue, April 29, 2008 - 4:35 PMI LOVE the innocent eyes that kids see everything through. I love the way they react to tattoos, piercings and weird hair. I wish that their parents would learn from how they are perceiving something beautiful instead of being horrified by it.

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 6:54 PMI had a funny experience with a kid at my work once. I don't have what I think are that many ear piercings: four "typical" lobe piercings in each ear (which technically means they extend into the cartilage and become low helix piercings, but whatever, you know what I mean), two high helix piercings in my left ear, and an industrial piercing in my right ear. None are noticeably stretched. The kid, between ten and twelve, was with his mom and their cat, and he was just floored! He was all, "WOW, you have a lot of ear piercings!" It made me laugh, mostly because he thinks _I_ have a lot of ear piercings, when I'm really on the tame end of the ear piercing spectrum!
I also think hairdressers are funny. They're always so scared of pulling on my jewelry and hurting me, and I'm always so casual about it! Hell, I've had ALL of my ear piercings, including the industrial, for years... they'll have to do more than a little tug to hurt them!

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 7:18 PMNot only do I have a tattoo studio, I teach preschool. I live in an area saturated with 'ink slingers' and long story with ex and kids is why I don't relocate. (not to mention friends, and safe, familiar etc.) Anyway, the kids I teach are way used to my tattoos, bits of metal here and there. The funny thing is I've never been asked to cover my nose piercing, even though the 'handbook' says I should. LOL
The best one, I have the paws and heart on my neck. It got warm and I put my hair up. Next thing, a boy comes in with a lick 'em stick 'em (temporary tattoo) on the back of his neck.
I've even tattooed parents from the center. I donate a certificate for the United Way auction.

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 7:20 PMHaha. Yeah my little cousin likes to play with the "chains" and dangle kuchi stuff that hangs off of my costume. It looks like she's rubbing my ass, but its funny to watch. ;-p My Aunt (her mother) runs over and tries to pull her away because she thinks she's going to tear my costume up. Haha.
However, the body mods are another thing. I've almost had my septum piercing pulled at once....that was a bit scary. Yeah, kids are more accepting than some adults. I think they fear their kids will get a little *too* interested in it and want the same things we have later on in their lives. ;-p -

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 8:18 PMI love the inquisitiveness of small children. I have had blue hair, often. There have been countless times where a child will run up and call me an alien, cookie monster, pretty, such and such. Their mothers usual look mortified at least; at most, they grab their kids by the nape and run away.
One such child ran up and said "Look mom, it's a alien!" and, as I always do, I bent far down so that he could touch my hair. His mother yanked him and started moving away hurriedly with the stroller. He was nonplussed, and instead dove into the carrying level under the stroller, got a magic marker, and started coloring his head!!! His mother glared and glared. Oh it was so cute.
When I was REALLY little, I would try to scrub off my mom's tattoo, saying that if I can't color on myself why can she. Then at about 2 1/2, I started trying to pick off her moles instead.
I ALSO used to shove her earrings in my ears until my doctor pierced them as a medical precaution. Goodness, I was an awful child. -

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 3:02 PMOctavia - my mom tells me that as a small child I used to take those little round bits of paper that fall out of paper punches and try to stick them in my eyes, so I could wear "contact lenses" like she did!

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 10:00 PMThe other day we took B (7) in to get her ears re-pierced at a place in Berkeley. Its also a tattoo shop, first time the kids had been inside one. Granted they couldn't see much because the tattooing is done in the back of the shop, they were curious about the buzzing sound and wanted to know if that is what is sounded like when their daddy and I got our tattoos.
I picked out my 12g crescents with their help and B was a trooper when it came time for the ear piercing part. She said it hurt more this time. She has sensitive ears like mine and had a reaction/infection with a pair of earrings that her grandma got her. This time they are surgical steel all over, not just the posts.
The younger one (5) had fun perusing the gorgeous body jewelry they had in the case and kept pulling me over and insisting that I get "those pretty ones" next. Her favorites were the pyrex spirals that were 0g. Don't know that I'll go that big but at least she wasn't scared of them. They were intensely curious about the various piercings and jewelry people were wearing but polite about asking questions. They are pretty used to tattoos and piercings by now, most of our friends have some sort of body modification. When I got my tattoo the youngest who was 3 at the time said it was "cool". lol -

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 1:08 AMI'm a middle school teacher, and though we're supposed to cover up tattoos, mine can't help but peek out once in awhile. Plus, living on a small tropical island lends itself to running into students and their parents nearly anywhere I might be. So needless to say, my kids know everything, And what love the most about it is that while at first they may think me "cooler" because if it, eventually it makes no difference at all- my rapport and relationship with them still has everything to do with how we treat one another, and nothing to do with how I look. Fortunately (or at least as far as I can tell) the same goes for my students' parents, and my colleagues as well. Of course I do push the envelope as far as I can, and am considering pushing even farther as I consider taking my backpiece/shoulder tat down to a 1/4 sleeve- hard to hide that one living in Hawaii!! I'm still a little chicken, and a little to broke to go for it now anyway. -

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 3:23 AMi'm a children's librarian, so my tattoos get seen by lots of kids-- i do try to cover them, but the 2 biggest ones are on my legs, so occasionally they peek out. kids love them, parents can get weird-- isn't it too bad that we don't all keep that kid sense of wonder and acceptance? i just smile and tell parents, hey, it's ok, they can ask about it or touch them.. they always want to show me their tattoos (the temporary ones, of course). once at a program i ran a tattoo parlour (with fake tattoos). when i do teen programs, my tattoos give me cred with that group!

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 4:20 AMAs I said, ex and kid story is why I stay, here's one that's related:
My boys have longish hair, on their collars. Their dad hates it, keeps making nasty little comments. Another long story, he has physical custody (thought it was best at the time), but I pay for a stylist, not Wal-Mart or Cost Cutters to make the boys' hair look nice. I told ex, "It's just hair." The boys get good grades, stay out of trouble, etc. I said, "They haven't dyed it yet." His comment, "OH NO! NOT gonna happen. That or piercings, tattoos and it's over. I won't have a parrot living in MY house." I bit my tongue, but shows how stupid he is. He has a crappy tattoo that he won't let me clean up. What's gonna happen when they are 18 and I think what they want permanent is cool?! LOL I don't want my kids going to college and going bonkers with the freedom, so reasonable amounts along with responsibilities is what I'm trying to do.
Just his ignorance floored and still irks me!

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 5:40 AMAaaawww, thats cute! Well, my tribe mates daughter Jana sometimes comes to our rehersals and last time she was hypnotized by my chin piercing and she asked me then " Auntie Kiki, is it a chewing gum??Can I have one too?" And I explained to her that it was a piercing and that its a kind of earring that I wear, only in my chin and then she noticed my Koi carp tattoo on my belly and she asked " Auntie Kiki, is it a real fishie?? Can I play with it??" Man! Kids are great!!! -

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 9:49 AMI read in my sons first grade room, and last year in his kindergardenclass and they just like the nose piercing and the haircolors.
A little boy wanted me to pick him up and he just started stroking my hair and my eyelids, saying oh pretty pretty...I like the pretty blue on your eyes (blue kohl) and the sparkle in your nose...
Last year they had this ''competition'' going on, one girl would say ''christine I like your necklace'' and then another jump in and say '' but I like your necklace and your earrings'', and another would jump and say''I like your necklace and earrings and nosething"'
and it would go on like that untill the last one almost liked anything I was wearing. LOL

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 9:56 AMOkay, this isn't about my tattoo, it's about my actual skin: I met a little girl who is super sweet, and obviously surrounded by white America. She actually asked if I could wash my skin color off! I thought it was too funny! :-D -

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 4:10 PMYeah, the same little girl who was petting my tattoo noticed the very large mole on my collarbone. She wanted to know what it was, and she said it looked like a chocolate chip!

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 6:53 PMNot quite a body mod, but... I was goth as a teenager and wouldn't leave the house without whiteface, and black eyes and lips at the very least. One day in a supermarket a little girl of maybe 5 in her fancy little private school uniform was staring at me for ages. Eventually she walked up to me and innocently asked "what are you?". I laughed and bent down to talk to her but her mother was so embarrassed that she grabbed her by the arm and yanked her into the next aisle. Kids aren't going to learn anything unless you answer their questions. -

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 8:46 PMI have another story that is a lot less cute, but still funny.
One time I was waiting for a bus and a mother with her kids were waiting there also. I had taken out my septum ring earlier, and decided to put it back in. I wear a notched axiom pincher in silver. So I take out the retainer and slide the pincher in, and the little kid got the most horrified look on his face. I think he thought that I just stabbed myself through the nose right there at the spot, and he was tugging on his moms shirt and pointing....I felt kind of bad. -

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 10:22 PMSee, when I was little that would have been my cue to yank it out of your nose and try desperately to stab it through my own nose.

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 8:33 AMMy husband has a large Cthulhu (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu) sleeve on his left arm and the only visible part when he wears a T-shirt are the tentacles. Just two days ago he was at the grocery store, minding his own business, when a woman comes up to him, stepping between him and the contents of the freezer he'd just opened, and said he should cover his tattoo because it scared her daughter. WTF?!?! I had to wonder if the mother mistook piqued curiosity for fear... the child wasn't screaming or crying so I have no idea what the woman was talking about but eventually she was asked to leave the store because she would not let it go. -

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 1:09 PMso off-topic, but... kids learn so much from their parents' reactions! i was at the zoo looking at the tapir (or some such animal), and a little girl pointed and said with glee, "Look at his butt!" (it was right up against the glass). Her mother was horrified and rolled her eyes and said with disgust, "Oh, not THAT again" as if the little girl's natural curiosity and sense of fun were some kind of abominations.
that's right, pass along shame and snobbishness to the next generation, dear!

Re: Kids and Body Mods
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 2:07 PMOne day after bellydance class, I needed to stop by the grocery store to pick up a few things on the way home. I hadn't brought another shirt so I just went inside in my typical bellydance practice clothes (harem pants and a choli). I have a pair of green cat eyes tattooed on my lower back and as I was leaning over in the freezer section a woman pushing an elderly woman in a wheelchair with a little girl about five in tow, came around the corner. I've had my tattoo so long, I don't even remember that it's there anymore so imagine my surprise when I felt someone grab hold of the waistband on my harem pants!! I stood up and sort of awkwardly looked over my shoulder thinking that the little girl had just let her curiosity get the best of her when I realized it was actually dear old granny!! The conversation went something like this:
Granny: "What's that on your back girl? Leaves?"
Me (laughing): No ma'am, cat eyes actually.
Granny: "Well that's really pretty anyhow!"
Me: "Thanks, I like it!"
Little Girl: "Momma I want one!!"
Mom: "Not till your older"
Little Girl (looking disappointed): "Can I touch it?
Mom: "You'll have to ask the nice lady."
I did let her touch it and she asked if I could wash it off and I told her, laughing, that no, I couldn't. Every once in a while Granny would pipe in about how she always wanted to get a tattoo but she thought she was too old now! I thought the whole thing was just TOO sweet! -
