I am eagerly anticipating getting my first large tattoo (I have two small ones currently), and after getting the final version of my design from the artist I commissioned (www.hennacrone.com - she's SO amazing to work with), I got my tax return last week, and I go in on Wednesday to meet with Brian from Cap City Tattoo! SUPER exciting! :D
We're going to have a consultation and then move forward from there... any ideas of important questions or things to learn during a consultation? I have never really had one before, and want to be sure I don't miss anything important.
Thanks! I really appreciate your advice on these things!

Re: What to ask during a tat consultation?
Fri, May 2, 2008 - 4:50 PMSince you've had a tattoo before, a lot of the basic questions are out of the way. I'd be more looking for a conversation, to make sure you and your artist are on the same page about size, color, placement, etc. Ask if he sees any parts of the design that he would consider "problem areas," such as linework that is so close together it is bound to blur, etc. -

Fri, May 2, 2008 - 6:34 PMOh, Bo has good points. :-) A big thing to consider is placement with the whole size thing. Bo said it already but it is important. :-)

Sat, May 3, 2008 - 4:33 AM"it is bound to blur" - shouldn't happen if the right needle is used and skin depth reached. -

Mon, May 5, 2008 - 2:01 PMAwright, I exaggerate, but you ladies know what I mean - lines that are just too damn close together.

Re: What to ask during a tat consultation?
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 4:38 AMI have to agree, you first have to have a comfort level with the tattooist and the surroundings. Health wise you want to ask about sterilization, how often an autoclave is cleaned, emergency plans if there's a reaction. Be sure to lay out all your fears and any conditions you have. Next, as it was said make sure you both have the same idea. Most who tattoo have their own style, does their style fit into your vision? Can they create in your vision? Are they willing to work with you to get to vision? This is your tattoo, your body. I heard this week, "it's her (my) art" but I don't look at it that way. Make sure it's what you want!

Re: What to ask during a tat consultation?
Sun, May 4, 2008 - 11:29 PMWhen working with a new artist, I usually forget to ask about their policy for touch-ups. Some will do it free for life, some free for the first year. -

Re: What to ask during a tat consultation?
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 8:27 AMDo you have a staff infection? If you do, you will have to go to the artist on antibiotics. Or if your system is weakened in anyway. Even if it's stuff you would just let yourself get rid of naturally, your are going to have large amounts of skin cut open thusly your lots more likely to get sick(er)
And ask about they're previous work, get pictures. And NOT their drawings. Drawings can be touched up and erased and redone. Some guys have great drawings all over their shop but don't buy thin enough needles and don't have a steady hand. See if they talk freely when you ask about previous clients. If they have to think about who was actually satisfied or who has come back for more work, and what general percentage of his clients did that, then he probably never sees them again. He's obviously not going to be able to say "At least 81% of my clients would or have come back a second time" But he/she will be able to rattle off cute or touching stories, uptight people who never like anything who left with a smile etc, etc. -

There are people who just want one tattoo. Or those who thought they'd love it (the actual process and feel of being tattooed) and hate it. None of those come back for more even though they are happy, happy with what they got. Then, there are folks like me, collect from different folks. Only 1 not happy with.
