At the end of July i have to have knee replacement surgery. I have some longstanding genital bling (clit hood and labia). Now when i've had artrhoscopic surgery on both knees before, the doctor was fine with the bling.. but the hospital nurses freaked. Possible sparks and things i guess. I'm not sure whether to go to the trouble of getting plastic spacers or what...Any ideas?

Re: Piercings and surgery
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 1:34 PMI have no knowledge about this, but I would ask the specific surgeon you are going to. If the nurses freaked but the doctor was fine....I dont't know. I had a bad experience with a nurse when my nose piercing developed a granuloma - all she did was give me a big lecture on how no iintelligent person would get that done and that's what I deserved for getting a piercing in such an "unhygienic" place and all I could do was take it out and hope for the best. So basically she was a total idiot about piercings.

Mon, May 12, 2008 - 1:39 PMI took out my hood piercing for a few months and the jewelry went back in no problem.
The thing with surgery is that if something happens, and your heart stops, and they have to shock you back to life... you are gonna shock your girly bits too... obviously, more likely than not everything woll go perfectly well and you will have no problems whatsoever. Its just being prepared just in case... -

Mon, May 12, 2008 - 2:01 PMohhh yahh ow ow ow... on the shocking the girly bits.. How long were yours out? These piercings were done at least 5 years ago. I hadn't thought about it. Maybe they would be fine with the jewelry just left out till after the catheter (ow ow iccckkk) comes out. -

Re: Piercings and surgery
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 2:17 PMOh god...yeah catheters are NOT fun. I had to have one and the doctor said I'd feel a "pinch"...well it was MORE than a pinch and I told him it was downright panic-inducing to tell a patient to expect a pinch when it actually hurts. Sorry to tell you that :(
Of course...you may be hardier stock than I, since the mere thought of anything sharp near my ladybits makes me instinctively curl up into a ball and shudder. -

Mon, May 12, 2008 - 2:26 PMI'm much better with quick pain than long drawn out pain.. Hence the piercings rather than tattoos.. At least so far. -

Re: Piercings and surgery
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 3:58 PMoh yeah, i'm with you there on the pirecing vs. tattoos...I had a vert labret done by a friend ( so thusly done wrong ) and a nose pircing ( done by me...it was a nose bone 'L' shaped, y'know? and intead on going throgh the skin to sit where it was supposed to, the arm curled between the layers of skin ), i was okay with that...but i cried like a bitch when they did the shading on my tat.
bt any way lol, i second talking to your surgery guy, becase i know alot of nurses can be old fashioned and like to scare peole out of their pirecings. =/

Mon, May 12, 2008 - 6:11 PMMale doctors that tell female patients that anything is going to "pinch" or be "mildly uncomfortable" should be keelhauled.
