Hi everyone! It's late, and I'm on one of those 'thinking about everything non stop' stream of thoughts that will probably keep me up all night so I apologise in advance for the probable lack of grammar this post will have.
So I was thinking.........
I've been wanting another tattoo for the last little while (I have one, some runes in a cryptic message down my spine between my shoulder blades.) and I have a whole bunch of ideas, but I'm wondering if it's 'too much' for just one tat.
You see in January I not only re-discovered Belly Dancing, but also that I am completely passionate about it. I have never been truly 'passionate' about something before so it's very exciting for me. A few months in, and I started thinking about getting a tattoo to celebrate this wonderful time for me, so I designed a kind of scrawly henna work that is fairly thin, but will (hopefully) start at my right front hip bone and wrap itself up and around to meet my first tattoo. It's very pretty, I hand drew it (which is why I don't have a pic) and I'm happy with how it turned out. Only now I am thinking about 'more' to add to it. I have always believed in totem animals, though I can't say I've actually done any shaman work. But I've had a few special animals in my life through the years, and I was thinking, what if I could really subtly stick them into the design I already made, just outlines probably of their profiles or something like that, make it so you really have to look to see them. I do know that by reading, writing, drawing, or collecting things that represent your totem helps you to honor it, so I've always contemplated having tattoos of them done, but dismissed it mostly because I just personally don't want a large fully detailed image of an animal. I'm more of a scrawly, scripty, fine line kind of person.
I also thought, what about the other things that mean something to me? Zodiacs? Pisces and Tiger...... could I stick those in there too?
And this is where I started to think......... how much symbolism can one tattoo take? lol celebration of belly dance+3 or 4 totems+zodiac signs+what else? Is that already to much? If I do decide to go with the Totem idea, I will have to do it in such a way that future animals can also be included because you never know when a new one will enter your life. I kind of like that idea, but I wonder how hard it would be to design.
Ok I'm going to stop now because I think I've rambled enough. I hope some of that makes a bit of sense at least.
How much symbolism do your tattoos have? Is there such a thing as 'too much'?

I currently have three tattoos with plans to add more, a pierced naval, and my most recent aquisition, a pierced nose. I LOVE my nose piercing and I just had it done so it is no where near healed. My question is about clear retainers. I work in an office and while I can't find anything specific about not having facial piercings in our company dress code, I want to cover all my bases. My piercer recommended that I wait three months before changing out my jewelry but I'm concerned I may need to get a retainer before then. So my question is, do any of you have experience with clear retainers and changing them in a brand-new piercing? Is there anything I should avoid? Would putting a retainer in do more harm than good while the piercing is healing?

I had the pleasure of meeting a very nice 5 year old girl this past weekend - I stayed with her grandma, Elizabeth Mahina, for Tribal Caravan. This charming girl was intrigued by all the sparkley tattoos (read: henna with glitter on it) she saw on bellydancers, so she got her own little flower on her wrist. She was comparing it to my arm, peering back and forth, and finally she reached out and... poked my tattoo. She rubbed my arm, trying to figure out why she couldn't feel my tattoo like she could feel the henna on her skin, which was dry and raised at that point. She then poked each of the red spots on my tattoo in turn. It was cute and funny. I explained that it was part of my skin, like dye on fabric, but I figure she was a little too young to grasp that concept. But how sweet!

Another experience that made me think about kids and body mods was meeting my tattoo artist's daughter. Her mommy brought her in to visit while dad was working on my arm. The little girl leaned through the window in the booth to say hello - and she grabbed dad's 1" ear plugs and pulled herself in like they were handles! The motion seemed familiar to her, and I would guess she holds on to his ears a lot. It made me smile, because I realized that to her, his gauged ears are totally normal.

I think kids are wonderful for the way they will accept things that adults consider weird. I had black and pink fake dreads for about a year, and kids just wanted to touch them and play with them, but their parents were horrified that their kids would even dream of commenting on how "pretty" my pink hair was. I let the kids play with it just to make their parents more uncomfortable.

She didn't mean anything bad by it and it didn't bother me because I love it, but it made me think about what is or isn't "aggressive" when it comes to ink?

I don't particularly consider my new ink aggressive (pic in the tribe album) because of the communities that I participate/thrive in, but I guess to some it would be considered aggressive, especially because it's dark and wicked looking, on a female, on the shoulders and highly visible in anything with shorter sleeves than a standard t-shirt.

What are everyone's thoughts on this topic? I know the only true thing that matters when it comes to tattoos is if the wearer is happy with them, it's all relative, but if we were to talk about what is the definition of aggressive from person to person, would something be considered more aggressive on a female than a male, and social acceptance of "aggressive ink", etc.....what are your thoughts?

I'd assume there's a point at which it is safe to use that jewelry, because the lobe has healed at its new size. But how long, approximately, is that?

I visited one tattoo shop in town, which I left abruptly. Everyone who worked there seemed strung out and unamused, and they didn't care about working with me to develop a great piece, only to sling it and have it over with. Yikes - thanks but no.

I've been thinking a lot, too, about whether this is something I would want for the rest of my life. And because the answer is "yes, but only if it is done absolutely right, and the way I want it," it's been a bit of a struggle. And there are other monetary issues that have been popping up that prevent me from having ink money.

Anyway, last night, I had this dream that I went to get a tattoo of a full moon in a hazy sky, to 1. See if I'd like it and 2. see if my skin handled the ink well. (That's the other thing - my skin is very acidic. I'm thinking it might be hard for my skin to hold the ink.)
By the end of the dream, the moon shrank and eventually disappeared. Hmm.

So, I guess I'm posting this to hear of any tattoo dreams you've all had, as well as if you've had or know of anyone who had issues with the skin acidity vs. ink.

So, in anticipation of getting the tattoo, I have some logistical care questions.

- I am currently on a weight loss program, and am hoping to lose about 20 pounds over the next few months. Should I get my tattoo after I've lost the weight? I am so excited that I don't want to wait that long!

- I'm a high school student teacher, and because of that I need to dress business casual at school. Should I wait to get my tattoo until summer? Are there comfy clothes that can be worn over a tat while it's healing? I remember a friend getting ink on her foot and she couldn't wear socks or anything but sandals for weeks!

- I am a busty lady, and the design will go under my bra straps in the back. Should I wear a bra while I'm healing? Should I attempt to go braless and wear supportive tank tops? What kind of undershirts should I wear?

Any recommendations on answers to these questions would be really helpful. I know you've all probably posted answers previously, and I would appreciate being directed to those threads too. :)

I am really excited about my new design, but a little scared about it not healing right because it is so big. I really want to take care of it well so that it looks beautiful. :)

Thanks!

Now, the person who did it, I can no longer see, due to a personal falling out, that I don't need to get into. I'll just leave it at that the artist, is not accessible.

My current (and simply amazing) tattoo artist, who is an expert on cover-up work, has suggested we work a cover-up for part of it. However, the one part of the piece is DARK and about 4x4 inches, and there's not much that can be done with it. So now I am facing the idea of laser removal, which is.... HELLA EXPENSIVE!!!!! WOW.

I asked my artist how white sits in the skin, and he says, without lots of care (even 1 day with no sunscreen) it changes color, more... eggshell. And that its not a smooth color, that white looks chalky. He says that white makes a good highlight color only for hte most part..

Is there any way to make white look good? Like if you add a little blue or yellow or something to make it a reaaaaally pale color and not exactly white? Or should I just chuck the whole idea out the window? I wanted stargazer lillies. I think they are so beautiful. But... white. I dont want to just leave the white parts blank either so that they are skin colored. :(

And though most people dont' do this anymore, I also like ot wear sheer pantyhose with it. I'm wondering if people here have experience with how employers have reacted to a small ankle tattoo at work. I realize I could just cover up with foundation or long pants....but wondering if my ideal situation of everyone letting my ankle tattoo alone while I wear skirts would be unrealistic? I'm planning on working for the federal government, not in any field that requires daily customer interaction, rather research or policy stuff. If I did go out in public on business I would definitely cover the tattoo.

Okay, this is a stupid question, but I don't know who else to ask - are you supposed to wear tapers by putting the skinny end through front to back so the long part is behind the ear? I've been at 8g for about a month, and today bought 6g tapers. After a bath I put the new tapers in, and they went right up to the end with just a bit of resistance - I was surprised, as I thought I'd have t work them slowly up over time since I was told the jump from 8 to 6 is major (and I'm a wimp). Anyway, instead of having them half-way through, they're all the way in. And since they ache now (a couple hours later), I don't want to switch them to another shorter 6g plug I was saving till they don't hurt anymore.
Also, are the tapers a bit smaller than the horns and plugs? I have 6g horns I've be saving also till I could wear them and they seem thicker than the 6g tapers. Oh, I did ask the salesperson to double-check the gauge on the tapers when I bought them to be sure they're 6g.
Thanks in advance! :)

This is technically a bit off topic, but I thought the info would be good to pass along since we are they types of people to dance to our own beat (no pun intended) and most likely delve into the wildside a bit more than the "norm". Apparently the TSA has gotten their butt in a crack over having a passenger remove a nipple ring with pliers before boarding a plane.

I love to travel; I love to see my commrades performances and attend workshops; I love my piercings! Yet I've never even slightly entertained the idea that I might have to remove a piercing (or 9) with pliers to do so! I'm surprised with all of the traveling our dancers do, we haven't heard first hand experiences like this . . .

~ Aria ~

LOS ANGELES - The Transportation Security Administration said it
will change they way its officers search passengers with body
piercings after a Texas woman complained she was forced to remove a
nipple ring with pliers in order to board an airplane.

Mandi Hamlin, 37, had demanded an apology and her Los Angeles-based
attorney sent a letter to the TSA this week requesting a civil
rights investigation.

Hamlin said she was trying to board a flight from Lubbock to Dallas
on Feb. 24 when she was scanned by a TSA agent after passing through
a larger metal detector without problems.

The female TSA agent used a handheld detector that beeped when it
passed in front of Hamlin's chest, the Dallas-area resident said.

Hamlin said she told the woman she was wearing nipple piercings. The
agent then called over her male colleagues, one of whom said she
would have to remove the jewelry, Hamlin said.

Hamlin said she could not remove them and asked whether she could
instead display her pierced breasts in private to the female agent.
But several other male officers told her she could not board her
flight until the jewelry was out, she said.

Hamlin was taken behind a curtain and managed to remove one bar-
shaped piercing but had trouble with the second, a ring. She said
the officer gave her pliers to remove the ring, a process which
caused a physical pain.

The TSA said Friday in a statement on its Web site that the officers
properly followed procedures, but that the procedures must change.
In the future passengers can either allow a visual inspection of
their piercings, or remove them, the agency said.

The statement stopped short of apologizing to Hamlin.

"TSA acknowledges that our procedures caused difficulty for the
passenger involved and regrets the situation in which she found
herself," the agency said in a statement. "We appreciate her raising
awareness on this issue and we are changing the procedures to ensure
that this does not happen again."

Hamlin's attorney said she accepted the TSA statement as an apology,
and commended the agency for taking quick action. The policy change
is "an achievement for the protection of passengers' civil rights
while meeting the security goals of the TSA," Gloria Allred said.

Regarding the pieces that have "curliques" on the end that is inserted, I assume that your ear/septum/whatnot must match the bigger gauge of the curled end of the piece, rather than the smaller gauge area where the jewelry will actually rest once it's inserted?
Or is there some trick to inserting the jewelry where you don't have to have stretched lobes?
Examples of both "regular" and "curlique" ends are on this page if you want a visual:

And it also totally draws it all together in terms of meaning too. I've also found the perfect tat for my ankle - can't wait to get it all done! I"m pretty much broke right now though, so once I get a job, hopefully I can get all of this done soon:-)

Which leads me to a question....I met some women in my bellydance class who swear by an artist who comes down from out of state for ink parties in a private home. They say he keeps things sterile, he works quickly, and does good tattoos. I've always heard to avoid these parties, but they all seem happy with him, the work on them seems fine - and it would probably, I'm assuming, be a heck of a lot cheaper. But then....he's doing lots of tattoos that night, maybe he would be tired....have you guys gotten inked at a tattoo party before?

I wanted to list his name to see if you guys knew about the artist, but I'm not sure if tattoo parties are even allowed or if I should list his name, so I won't....but the gals say he is from a reputable shop.

We're going to be swimming with dolphins too, so I definetly wouldn't want to risk partially healed ink. It also gives us plenty of time to get the design just right and tweak it if need be.

I'm also a little bit nervous. Not about getting the tattoo, but once I do I feel kinda like I'll have entered a different relm or something. My current tat is much smaller and this new one is much more noticable. Its only going to be obvious in a bikini or midriff baring top, but still. I definetly won't fit so well into cabaret circles, though I've been drifting from them anyways. But it will affect the venues I'll be able to dance at I figure. Anyone else have this 'identity' crisis when you've gotten ink or mods that cross the line from sublte to obvious?

Well, I really need to post a pic too so you can all see and give advice too:-) But basically, I have ink on my lower back and on my left shoulder blade. I was hoping to have ink in between them to sort of connect them or form a larger picture. I can't think of any amazing ideas so far, and I was wondering if an artist would be able to. The thing is, if I'm not amazed by the artists' ideas, I don't want to get the ink....

So how do you go about doing this - can I ask an artist to draw up designs and show me how the whole back would look? And keep asking the artist to change it around if I don't like it? Or just walk away from it? Do they charge per design they come up with, even prior to any tatttooing (if any tattooing even happens)?

ok so thanks everyone who posted their two cents on my previous thread. so here's what's happened:

he has apparently decided that my getting a tattoo cannot be the reason we split up and so he's come to terms and accepted. he's not so thrilled that i dont let him go with me for my tattoo but with the way he is....i just feel it would be ugly. i'd rather not have my getting a tattoo be an uncomfortable and awkward situation. i want to enjoy this. he's also said that he's thinking of getting his next one this summer and so maybe tattoos aren't as horrible as he was wanting them to be...

however, since this whole situation has scared me stupid, i had prepared for the worst and subconsciously distanced myself from him which made our time spent together really awkward lately. it's really put a huge damper on our relationship but i believe we're on the long long road to recovery. we were planning to move in together this summer and now i'm considering moving in with the friend i'm getting tattooed with so i dont have live alone anymore.

so in conclusion here, there's good and bad and for now i'm just riding the waves and waiting to see what happens.

again, thank you to all who commented and offered their advice. it means alot :)

The place was nice and clean, and I liked the response I got when I showed him the stuff in my folder. He wasn't like 'Sure we can slap that right on ya!' or 'Well we'll have to make it 3xs as big...' that I've heard elsewhere. He said it needed some tweaking but that he thought it looked doable. Its a bit of a drive for me, but not too bad, I do pass it on the way home from massage school. The rates sound good, and the time frame is right so I think I'll be finally getting inked up again soon, whoo hoo!!

I felt kinda sheepish too, my folder has a shitload of clippings in it. Theres the original inspiration image that has the right shape, another image that has the posture, another with the right hair, ect. I even traced one on watercolor paper and worked up the colors I wanted. Then I had my clippings that I cut out and taped on me to see if they looked the way I wanted them too.(anyone else do crazy shit like this?) Instead of being like 'What the hell am I supposd to do with all of this?' he was picking up my clippings and holding them up against me to see what I was wanting. So that was another point in his favor ;)

So can anyone tell me, as I forgot to ask, if you need more than one session do you have to wait for everything to heal first? I would assume so, but I'm torn up with the thought of walking around with a partially completed tat. I know its been done but I'm not liking the idea for myself. Tho I may change my mind after 3 hours of a needle grazing my hip.

BUT he's got a tattoo and wants more.....and i'm not sposed to have any cause he doesnt like it?! What do i do here? I want a few more in the long run here and he's completely anti-change. He even hates when i change my hair color! Now he's all panicked that he won't be able to adjust to this tat like he has the other named things he doesnt like. And he's paranoid that this tattoo will break us up. We've been together for almost 3 years and if he hasn't left me for my other body mods, why this one? I mean yeah, it is a rather large tattoo i'm planning (from bra line to hip) and compared to my feet tats, that's huge. But i'm so frustrated. How can he be allowed tats and i'm not allowed anymore? I've worn a captive bead ring in that hole since August 2006. I took it out yesterday for the first time. And now I can't get the jewelry back in.
Heres a question: Well, as you all know, in Europe we have the metric system almost everywhere so when we talk about our stretching sizes we talk in millimeters so "mm". When you guys overseas talk about it you use "g". I was wondering how many "g´s" is a millimeter? For example, my ear is stretched for 4 mm´s now..How many "g´s" is it?

They're little clear sticker patches that go on the bak of your earring hole so you can wear "normal" earrings without them looking all stretched out and saggy. They are intended for people with holes stretched out from wearing too heavy earrings, but I though I could try them on my 6 gauge holes and see if I could wear my regular gauged earrings again. i think they might work, as long as the earrings aren't too heavy. They were like $10 for a pack of 60. Not sure if you could them for hole much bigger than mine, though.

I started my left foot over 5 years ago, working on a Mehndi design, mostly freehanded by my artist from my second toe, up my ankle, wrapped and down my back tendon. I have about 11-13 hours in the piece. I won't lie it was my most painful tattoo and was hard to take the healing since you really have limited movement the first few days, due to swelling.

Because of the time needed to heal, having the time in my life and other things (the memory of the pain and healing time were also in my head), I had put off doing my other foot but now that I am dancing I thought it was time to finally get them matching up!

My piercer was all the way across the neighboring town, so I dropped in somewhere closer to ask their piercer if they had any h2ocean, as I had run out. The piercer at the closer place told me to just go to the drug store and get generic wound wash solution. It's sterile, and in a spray can just like the h2ocean (except it comes out more liberally), and waaaaay cheaper. Worked just as well for me.

i am contemplating getting my lip pierced, but i am worried a bit. i sometimes have trouble healing piercings. my nose did pretty well both times but some of the holes in my ears had trouble and my navel rejected hardcore (it was REALLY ugly) and I'd just hate to have what happened to my navel happen on my face. i had contemplated an eyebrow piercing, but was told that they are sometime harder to heal than a lip piercing....Any advice? Thanks!
