Apologies if this has been posted before or im in the wrong tribe.
No doubt this is quite common.
I have a teacher who has become a good friend ,problem is...she teaches oriental and i have started tribal fusion
so i would like to let her down gently that i will not be attending her classes any more.
I still do oriental but closer to home.

Re: A bit of a dilemma...!!!!
Sat, March 22, 2008 - 9:14 AMJust let her know that another area of the art has captured your interest and you would like the time/space to explore it.
Maybe suggest you explore it together (if she has the time/inclination)? This shouldn't end you friendship (still make time for her after you leave to study this other form).
If she's a real friend (and caring instructor) - should support and encourage you is all your dance endeavers...

Re: A bit of a dilemma...!!!!
Tue, March 25, 2008 - 7:37 AMSpeaking from a teachers' POV, she may not be as upset as you imagine.
If you're really good friends, you should be able to be frank with her & not have it be an issue between you but rather a new topic of conversation.
On the other hand, maybe she views your all's 'friendship' differently than you think, that is, she's reserved enough professional distance to take any decision from a student in stride. Sometimes I think this happens with my students, they are reluctant to tell me something because they don't want to hurt my feelings or whatever, but actually I'm pretty detached from what they do.
I'll certainly voice my opinion (professional opinion OR personal opinion!) if asked (sometimes if not!) but whatever it is, it's not going to be an issue for me in the long run. -

Re: A bit of a dilemma...!!!!
Wed, March 26, 2008 - 1:59 PMListen to Anthea. :) No matter how close you are, your teacher is likely to realize that this is just something you want to do - and if anything, it's a positive reflection on her that you know enough to figure out what you want to do dance-wise.
My first teacher does straight-up Egyptian style & can't stand tribal (I now teach & perform ATS), but even now she's tremendously supportive. That's just how good teachers are.

Re: A bit of a dilemma...!!!!
Tue, March 25, 2008 - 8:47 AMI just had two students move towards something they wanted to do that was not where my class was leading.
Its not a personal thing and I encouraged them to seek something new.
I view teaching as a process of personal growth for everyone involved. If I can be a stepping stone for something else, Im glad to be part of the path.

Re: A bit of a dilemma...!!!!
Tue, March 25, 2008 - 1:42 PMIt's nice that you are concerned for your teacher/friend's feelings. Peoples interests change, or life changes their circumstances sometimes. She may already know that your interests have changed, and may understand and support your decision. Or, you may be parting ways temporarily. -

Re: A bit of a dilemma...!!!!
Wed, March 26, 2008 - 9:34 AMI understand your dilemma.
A few years ago when I told my first instructor that I was taking tribal classes and really enjoyed it she scrunched up her nose like she was smelling something bad and said, "Now, why in the world would you want to do that for?"
She hated tribal and took every opportunity to tell me she did. I left her studio about a year after that.
Now, I do both!!! I teach Egyptian Cab and take tribal lessons as well. It's funny how the two kind of merge sometimes in my dancing! :)
But you know. . . you have to be happy. It's nice that you're concerned about her feelings but in the end, you do what makes you the happiest.
