The Temple of Community crew would like to thank everyone involved with Sembazuru. The memorial was a grand success and appreciated by many Burning Man attendees. We were touched by the amount of participation and genuine love through out the project and sincerely hope it was everything you wanted it to be. Thank you for your donations, hard work and input.

The project itself went smoothly. We engineered it without real blueprints. A drawing was made by Skirblah and handed off to Gothalot for the engineering and build. We went from Skirblah’s concept sketches and some minor changes were made along the way to incorporate logistics, finances and structure integrity. We originally were looking at a 45 foot or more height with a 20 foot square platform. Our first concern became cost. The second concern was size and ability to get it in a truck partially put together. This would have required a flat bed semi. With the budget we had something of that size did not work. Thus we scaled it down to a 10 foot square platform and a 32 foot high Crane. This enabled us to get head , tail and wing pieces up without the use of a hoist or crane on the build itself and transport it at a reasonable cost. Hinge assemblies were fabricated in Steamboat Ed’s workshop enabling the pieces to pivot upwards. Some pieces took 6 or more people and some careful rope work to lift up into position.

The pre fabricate and set up on location in Santa Rosa helped logistics immensely. We were able to sort out potential problems ahead of time and this made the build at the Burning Man event much easier and allowed for any unforeseen mishaps or delays. Wind-storms being the biggest set back out there in the Black Rock desert.

Sembazuru went up relatively easy out there in Black Rock City. There is not much to report. We all did our jobs and we only went a day off schedule albeit it was our contingency day. The Gateway part of the project designed by Rhino went up fast albeit a few design changes. The community was able to participate in Sembazuru throughout its construction and after it completion by Wednesday. There were many offerings and memorials placed at the Temple throughout the week until its burn.

Overall summation by Gothalot –
As far as the design went we pretty much built what we said we’d build. It came out just as we expected which in itself is no small feat. It was always an organic work in progress and you always have to take into consideration that what goes on paper is always what you end up with. We did a good job at remaining true to the artists renderings. The crew worked together in all phases to create something that would hold up in possible Gail force winds, serve the communities needs and be aesthetically pleasing to view.
Was the project a success? Yes, Id say it was. There are a few things I would do differently.
Finances; First, I would make sure it was well funded. As the chief instigator of the project my spouse and I were financially libel. This means if there are still bills to pay we were the ones who had to see that happens no mater what is left in the Temples coffers. We ended up about $500.00 in the negative. To me that’s not a huge sum to go over budget considering the scale of the project so, I’d consider it a success. There were the challenges of the other Temples being built at Burning Man in 2008. We found out after we’d started. One has to consider at some point; do you stop the project because you have competition for temple donations, or do you continue and take the risk and debt that could incur. After review with key temple organizers it was determined to continue. The scale was not the same of the larger temples and possible losses were not huge. Risk assessment I guess is what you’d call it. Keeping good accounts is heavily advised and HAVE a budget. Keep all receipts. Sometimes donators want to see that monies are going where they are supposed to be going and they have that right unless you say otherwise. We kept good records and after an informal accounting we found we were just $30.00 shy of receipts. Probably the ones I put in my trousers and didn’t give to Butterfly, the accounts mistress. It happens, as long as its small its not a big deal. I also recommend NOT using Pay Pal. We were definitely a not for profit art piece. This said we still needed to get the non profit status from the federal and state agencies. This would have saved us some grief. Pay Pal froze monies donated and it was a gigantic effort to get them out in time to allocate funds towards the end of the build. Anything over a few grand and the flags at Pay Pal come up. Also be aware if you are using a personal account that the monies deposits will get taxed as income on your tax returns most likely. Consult a tax professional about those matters as I am not one and my advice will have irregularities.
Secondly, the day and time of the burn. Choose wisely. We chose as a group to do a dawn burn the night after the Man burns. We felt it a poignant time. Letting go, and starting anew. We felt that if people wanted to see it and really wanted to attend they would. Now I’m not so sure. People are rather tanked up and in another head space after the Man and you need a full day to get over that I think. Hence why the traditional 12:00 BM sponsored temple is the following night. We also had issues about other temples burn times and wanted to be sure we didn’t divide the community into choosing one Temple over the other.
The Burn itself, Went relatively well. Our crew was exhausted and also did the fire parameter duty that morning. If I was to do it all over I would have had a fresh new group dedicated solely to that function so that the bulk of the crew could have enjoyed the burn more relaxed and able to appreciate their hard work. It is difficult when you are so tired and people are wanting to burn themselves in the fire, constantly challenging parameter crew to get closer and closer. I also would have like to have seen Sembazuru burn more efficiently. I did not take that extra step to douse fuel on the beams that were the thickest. Chalk it up to my own experience of burning things. I thought I had that covered as a kid blowing models up but hey, ya cant win them all. Basically we engineered it to stay up and hold people. In a sense we built it TOO good.
Burn platform clean up. The decomposed granite (burn platform) took half a day. We had the right tools, a magnetic rake, wheel barrel, shovels and rakes. The operation was performed by two people. I recommend enlisting the whole of anyone’s crew to this. It can go by a lot faster with all of the crew there. Make it clear to your crew that no one bugs out until that is finished. Its been known to happen to a few burn crews where people do not stay to the end. Our burn was clean so it was a relatively easy op for two and I did not ask the whole crew to help. I recommend your whole crew as part of the bonding experience and seeing something to its definite end. A cathartic adventure. I was blessed to have the company of a crew member and it became one of my most precious moments on Playa.
Team and Project management went smooth. If you choose the right people from the beginning then you save yourself a world of grief. For me its choosing people that I think in my experience will compliment each other. Finding people that have a wide range of interests, likes and strengths with a common goal and love of the project. Too similar interests and you can get ego conflict and dramas you just wont have time to deal with. Not enough similar interests and you get disconnection and little common ground amongst individuals thus preventing a bonding that needs to occur during the project. Its like the emotional glue. It’s a balanced combination and often its hit or miss. This year we hit it on really well. It is also very useful to allocate responsibilities and define them clearly. Give EVERYONE a key job and position. Its not so you can blame, its so that each individual has a sense of place in the community and within the project. Its so very important and I cant stress that enough. A good sense of self and a purpose goes a long way.
In closing the experience was priceless to everyone. It was a lot of hard work and not for the feint. We did it because we want to give to our community that has given so much to us already. We celebrated the passing of life, We re-gifted a new day.

This year we called the event Working Man. With a smile on our faces of course.

There are no plans for a 2009 temple. 2010 however is completely another story. We will be putting forth a proposal for 2010 in the next 6-8 months. Stay tuned!

Again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts from all of The Temple of Community crew for allowing us to bring to you such a special and inspiring art memorial.

Regards, Gothalot

There were many comments on how lovely she was and the appreciation by others. A testament to the hard work and love that was put in by crew before and after the burn.
Id like to thank everyone for participating. From the person who left origami paper to the people huddled under one of the baby cranes seeking shelter.

Well folks one week to go!

BUILD
The crane is in parts and ready to load (nearly). I'm plasma cutting up the platform brackets today and Steamboat will weld them so we can have a clean playa burn base (per BMORG request. Another 100 bucks in steel donated by Steamboat. Thanks Steamboat you are an angel, even if you do burp like a walrus.

When we get to Playa anyone who would like to build please come see any member of the TOC / or Rue Morgue Crew and they can point you in the right direction. BRING A SCREW GUN (impact drill or facsimile of) if you have one. Gloves are a good idea too.

FINANCES / Needs
We have not quite reached the financial goal as of yet and will probably be a bit short for truck and genny fuel. What we ask is that people bring gas. We need :

40-50 gal. unleaded standard fuel for genny
10 gallons of Camp stove fuel for BURN.
2x4 / plywood / 8x3 wood screws.

Other than that we will make it and thanks to all the supporters both physical and financial we will have a lovely memorial temple that we can gift to the Burning Man community. After all we are the Temple of Community.

SCHEDULE
I will be rather busy the next 7 days cleaning, packing, fixing. If you need to get in touch with me please write TempleOfCommunity@yahoo.com. If you need me urgently ask for the cell number or contact any of the crew to get my number. I don't post it on line for obvious reasons, LOL. Butterfly checks mail regularly to handle the Temple's day to day running and can answer public queries.

The first phase of the Rue Morgue and TOC crew arrives on August 21st AM/Midday. The Temple (Sembazuru) will be located at the Esplanade at around 815-830 1100 feet from the man. Rue Morgue is at the 9:00 Plaza.

Again thank you to the supporters. I hope you will be proud of what we created as a community and have the moment to stop by Sembazuru to place your own memorial there.

SEE YOU AT BURNING MAN!

Are you ready for BM 2008?
Well, it's time for the Temple of Community to announce the Meet -and- Greet
times for our so dedicated guardians of the Sembazaru (Peace Crane). We will be
initiating you into the sacred order of the Sohei on either Monday, Wednesday or
Friday from 4-6 pm at the Rue Morgue, which is located at the 9:00 plaza and
8:00. Please plan to attend one of these M-n-G's or come by the camp to get
your orientation and details about the shifts. The M-n-G's will be fun, with
refreshments (a special Rue Morgue drink is being concocted just for you, drink
it if you dare!) and assorted swag which we are hard at work getting done for
you! This is also an excellent opportunity to meet other Sohei who will be out
on the playa with you. Please plan to attend. We would also like to invite you
to plan to attend our temple burn, which will be just before sunrise on Sunday
morning (after the Man burns). As a Sohei, you have the honor to be in the
inner cicle for this burn and help with the burn perimeter; but you must attend
one of the meetings so we know how many peeps we can count on and to give you
instructions. (I've heard rumors that there will be some pretty fantabulous
fire performances leading up to the burn itself!) Exact times for the burn
and/or pre-burn meetings will be announced at the M-n-G's, so come and be part
of this amazing art installation and all that it has to offer!

Thank you, once again for your efforts in volunteering, that's how these
amazing events happen.
We look forward to seeing each and every one of you!
We could still use a few more bodies - if you know anyone that is still looking
for somewhere to volunteer, we'd love to meet them!
Namaste!
Skirblah and Diana - your Sohei organizers
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

I've been asked to organize/ choreograph the fire performance before the burn. And I'm pleased to bring together the TOC: Fire Community.

All fire artists are welcome, of any skill level. Performers should bring their own fire safeties.

Planned choreography involves 6 waves of fire.
First wave has all fire on the ground. This can be people with long poi, Skip-its, or static tools while bent over.
Second wave limits the height to the knees or lower.
Then hips or lower
Then shoulders or lower
then about head high
and finally the sky's the limit.

The whole thing should run 18-20 minutes and performers may do up to 3 waves plus the finale'.

Thank you to everyone who helped make our event Saturday night possible! The music was fantastic, the fire spinning gorgeous and the raffle items stupendous. We had a great crew out there. Thank you to all who made it down to Il Pirata. It was great to meet new folks and reconnect with old friends.

Sadly, due to so many different factors, we didn't get nearly the turn out we had hoped for. The good news is that, between the event and the donations that have been rolling in over the past few months, we've raised about $1500. This money has funded the materials and supplies for the crane. The bad news is, we are still far from the remaining $2500 that we need to get the project to the playa.

We are reaching out to our community one more time to see if we can generate some funds THIS WEEK!

******Our most immediate need is to raise about $600 BY WEDNESDAY to readch the $1000 we need to pay the BM org for the decomposed granite that we need to use to protect the playa when we burn the crane (www.burningman.com/installa...ml).*****

******Our second priority is to raise the $1500 we will need for the truck and fuel costs for transporting the crane to the playa.

We know that times are tight, especially as we get closer and closer to departure day for the event. But even a little bit helps us. If you believe in the Temple of Community, and you want to see it out on the playa, but consider making a donation. Without your help, we may not be able to get it there.

Donations can be made via PayPal to templeofcommunity (at) yahoo (dot) com or via snail mail. Check out our donations page for details:

templeofcommunity.com/hp_word.../donate/

We've also got great buttons and stickers for sale from $1-3. They'll be up on our site by tomorrow, so check that out, too.

With deep gratitude,

For example: I'm going as "Craptain America" The comical embodiment of all things I consider negative about America. My girlfriend Natane, is going as "The Red Scare," a cartoonish personification of America's 1980s fear du jour. She needs henchmen, they would be "The Communist Party," her faithful goons that serve everyone vodka drinks and try to get everyone to share.

Other character ideas:

-Rambozo the Clown
-The Gimpper (Gimp in a Reagan Mask)
-Cabana Castro
-Jim Jones (militantly offer people koolaid)
-Zombie Jerry Falwell
-Che Gunderson (Just wear a Che Guevara shirt with a sportcoat, jeans, converse, and carry around an Apple Store bag. Ask everyone where the starbucks is)

All donations are highly recommended! I guess I'm just thinking and worrying too much that it won't be too enticing.

If you, or someone you know needs a ticket, this is a prime opportunity to possibly get one at a good price, which will also support getting our Temple of Community to the playa.

Also, we're raffling off a loveseat that will BE delivered to you on playa, AND picked up from you at the end of the week..... all you have to do is kick back and relax on the loveseat all week long. Many other raffle items could be won as well. Do not need to be present to win raffle items, but do need to get tickets before the lovely prizes are gone gone gone.

Please see www.templeofcommunity.com for more details

Sohei were feudal era Japanese warrior-monks - which we feel is a very appropriate 'translation' for the job at hand. Our Sohei volunteers will be gently protecting both the participants and the structure each night from 9pm to 6am in three hour shifts.

I am organizing our Sohei, and I REALLY NEED some volunteers to come out and help watch Sembazuru, her baby cranes, and the public that comes to and uses our Temple. If you're interested in assisting in this role, please contact me via a tribe PM, or at skirblah at skirblah dot com with ToC prominently in the subject line. You can also volunteer and get more info at www.templeofcommunity.com

To each person that volunteers, I offer my heartfelt thanks, the heartfelt thanks of the entire build crew, and there will be a community token (exact form to be determined - but it'll be swagarific!!)

I'm considering setting up an additional tribe ToC Sohei for communication... I'd love to have a place where we can introduce ourselves, share stories, talk strategies, etc.

Thank you for your interest and support! We really cannot do this without our community! Please consider assisting us in this endeavor.

GATES: If theres a gate, keep it closed. Wiggles (aka Judy, Steamboats wife) has a Cocker spaniel rescue so there are many dogs that are loose in the back yard and in the house. So we do not have to stop working and search for dogs lets all be very alert that the dogs don't escape as we go in and out of the back yard or main house please.

FACILITIES: Toilets are located in Both RV's (turn pump on to use water, turn off when done). There are also toilets located down the hall in the main house and in Butterfly and Gothalot's cottage at the side of the house.

FRIDGE: Outside refrigerator is the best to use and is located in the main houses back yard.

UNATTENDED FOOD: Dogs! We love em, and they LOVE unattended food. Cocker Spaniels are excellent scavengers. Be forewarned. LOL.

SHOP: Steamboat is the shop foreman and master fabricator. If you want to know how to make something or solve a puzzle he is the man. If you check out a tool from the shop make sure it goes back where it came from when you are done. Its a weird system in the shop but Steamboat has a method to the madness and we all like to try to keep it organized for him, thanks.

PARKING: To keep the driveway clear for deliverys and dog rescue operations there is parking in the field. Plenty smooth and free of debris.

COTTAGE: Feel free to relax in the cottage or RVs if you need a rest. Our Casa es su casa.

Well we pretty much spent almost the entire day there playing, looking, touching and buying many pretty blinky things. ( Yeah I have a problem touching things...especially if it's blinky or sparkely)
On our way home I realized I had forgot the flyers and buttons in my purse! DUMB ASS moment!

So with THAT lesson learned, I redeemed myself this past weekend. Two women from Yahoo were here at Ed's BBQ.
They were conducting research on how people come to know and develop the language, to learn new things that they had never done before.
After a lengthy discussion on our project, BM and Tribe, I took that opportunity to give them each a button and a flyer to our fundraiser.
Now it may not be much...BUT I'm determined to get the Temple Of Community KNOWN and SUPPORTED!

With that said, I made up some business cards to keep on our person. In the event we are at an event, or with people that NEED to know about our project.
I posted it in the album.

I wanted to share with you a project that will be out on the playa this year that needs YOUR help and participation. Please read on for lots of info!!

Sembazuru: Temple of Community will be a larger than life rendition of an origami crane at Burning Man 2008. We hope you’ll be inspired by what you see in this email to get involved!

************************
A NEW WEBSITE!
We've just launched our new website. It's full of exciting information on how YOU can get involved in the project and how YOU can help us get to the playa. Check it
out: www.templeofcommunity.com

************************

A FUNDRAISING EVENT!
On August 2nd, we'll be hosting a fabulous evening of art, music, raffles and (hopefully) fire! We'd love to see you at Il Pirata in San Francisco. For more info:
templeofcommunity.com/hp_word...-events/

************************
BECOME A TEMPLE OF COMMUNITY SOHEI!
We are looking for generous volunteers to act as the Temple of Community Sohei out on the playa. The sohei (pronounced “SO-HEY”) were the warrior monks who maintained and protected temples around the Kyoto area during the Japanese feudal era. On the playa, the sohei will spend a few hours
at the Temple of Community site playing the role of gentle protectors of both the structure and its participants. To find out more, click here:
templeofcommunity.com/hp_word...unteers/

or find us on Tribe here:

************************

DONATE!
We've got quite a bit of money to raise before we make it to the playa. We're forever grateful for even the smallest donation. And if you can't spare the cash, we've also got a wish list of items we need for the playa. For more info, go to: templeofcommunity.com/hp_word.../donate/

************************

BUILD YOUR OWN CRANE!
We're asking people from the community to build their own smaller cranes. It's an easy and cheap art project! Check out the details here if you're interested:

************************

Thank you for your support! If you have any questions, please drop me an email on CS or contact us at templeofcommunity@yahoo.com!

See you soon!

Hello good people! i'm back in the states after a very long hiatus. just spent some time chatting with Gothalot about a potential fundraiser for the ToC. It seems reasonable to shoot for early July as a date for an event.

I wanted to start thinking more concretely about organizing an event by getting more folks involved in the brainstorming/planning process. i am happy to take on the lead organizer role for an event, but it's been a long time since i put something together a fundraising event. i'll definitely be looking to our community here for assistance in the process.

here are some categories of needs that i think we're gonna need to work on:

1. Promotions: does anyone have any connections to promotions work? something pretty simple for this event is all we'll need.
2. Entertainment: it's probably a good idea to have some kind of entertainment at the event (band, dj, dance, circus acts, singing monkeys, anything that draws a crowd!)
3. Silent auction: it's a good idea to start collecting items for the silent auction now.
4. Venue: gothalot said Butterfly had some ideas about venues...
5. ToC schwag: possible stickers/buttons/t-shirts? might be a good idea to have these things available for small purchase prices at the event and then for other pre-playa events as promotion; anyone have any good lines on production of such things?
6. ToC Info: definitely diagrams, descriptions, models, general info, etc. whatever will capture people's imagination

I'm sure this list will grow, but that's a start. Let's start chatting about the event here. If you have more specific questions and you want to talk offline, so to speak, you can contact me at catiemagee@gmail.com

let's raise some money!!

I got a line on a fabric store down in San Hoser in Little Saigon and picked up a bolt of white cloth for cheep. We have a chunk 92yds long x 5ft wide, which by my calcs is enough to wrap around 3 sides of the base, cover the tops and bottoms of the wings, and surround the tail and head. Plus a little bit left over for errors and boo-boos and maybe some frills.

The owner even cut off a chunk and burned it with a lighter to show that it was straight-up cotton, no black smoke from poly-blends.

It's about the thickness of a sheet so the roll doesn't take up that much space (maybe a little bigger around than one of my thighs). I figure with all the support beams and whatnot it'll be strong enough for the extremities because we can anchor it down pretty tightly. I'm not so sure how it'll hold up on the body though... Only one way to find out!

Well what a great weekend! Mare and Todd made it safely to Sacramento and hooked up with Skirblah then drove down to RueMorgue HQ for the Temple of Community Work weekend. Also up from San Francisco was Ninja Kitty. We helped her recuperate from the Korean experience by watching her read an American newspaper and eat some BBQ that for once did NOT taste like Kymchee!

Since I really declined from making any actual blueprints BEFORE the build (although I did draw up some sketches to move us along ahead of time) it was still an organic process as we all hummed over the crane deciding how things could get attached and pre built as well as disassembled and onto a truck for Playa. Much was considered from info of the test burn as well.

As much as we would have loved to see the head and tail bob up an down in some way we opted not to try that this year. The feat of just getting it built up up and down then on to the playa is a challenge enough for us at the moment. Not to mention the additional cost that could occur if we animate. Also, its a TEMPLE not a toy. Albeait we want to see joy and smiles too we decided to keep it reverent.

So... support joists to help with the tork on the main beam were added. Also, inside infrastructure and load baring beam was installed, and tail section was built, hung, taken down and re hung a few times, fell on the truck once along with a support stick I was holding that got away and attacked Todd (hes okay just a scratch) and then re-hung again where it sits today. Woo damn hoo we rawk.

THIS WEEKENDS CREW WERE:

Gothalot: Proj. Mgr Monkey / Tool Wrangler Monkey

Pikey also did a better pert of the fire base assembly while I threw logs at him and thatched the wings. Meanwhile Butterfly assembled burnable fabric to the portions of the crane as needed and added a tie. I learned a lot about how the Crane needs to burn now and will report more about it later. The way it burned says a lot about how the rest of what we do needs to be built.

were still not sure about what were going to do with our cats. i called the local animal control and pounds, even called a couple in indiana, and i shit you not, none of them would take even the cute little 8 week old kitten. they said its spring time and theyre really full, so unless i want to bring them a feral cat to put down, they cant take them. after bothering every shelter under the sun about our dog, i think weve worn out resources there. so now were working on the kitties. im sure we can find a home for the kitten somewhere, but the two cats... not so sure. ( theres also the fact that we love them dearly and would hate to part with them. )

The Blood Vessel in its first year became an icon for those on the playa and those mourning the losses of loved ones. Clarice took passengers from the existing Temple to their homes on playa as well as transporting the Playatech coffins to their final burn destination.

Well as she will The Blood Vessel sucks us dry from the original build. Butterfly and I have sunk thousands into her as well as a lot of blood (literaly,) sweat and tears. We have thousands in credit card debt we're trying to pay off while at the same time paying an ex partner the balance $700 of the 1k he wanted in order to relinquish his half of the ownership. The partnership separation was needed in order to continue with the goal of the projects intent.

SO what we need from you guys is fundage. I cant keep putting the partner off, Albeit I sent him $300 so far we still have to raise $700. Its not a large amount but its more than Butterfly and I have while Im awaiting work in June. Butterfly also has Summer coming up and will not have her teaching job till the new semester starts in September.

We are sponsoring the Blood Vessel Rue Morgue as well as the Temple of Community and we need your help in order to be able to get Clarice back onto the Playa this year. If not she will have to be sold and scrapped in order to pay off the initial investor.

Ok, so I wrote this yesterday in my blog .... but thought it'd be good to post here as well, so's ya'll know what's going on...
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Dateline May 17th and 18th, 2008 - Santa Rosa, California

To beat the heat Pikey, Gothalot, and Rod got off to an early start working on the Temple of Community. With one wing assembly nearly ready to be raised and articulated, progress was being made by the time Skirblah and kids came rolling into the Haasienda. Kids ran off to be bored elsewhere while Skir jumped in and assisted with the assembly. Much of the day was spent measuring, drilling, checking, and then finally we were ready to raise the first wing. Steamboat and Butterfly Lisa came out to assist and up went the wing. A few snags were encountered - literally, with a couple metal brackets needing modifications to ease articulation, but then with a few chops in the shop... a thing of beauty.... One attached, articulated wing!!
Yea!!
Some disassembly of the second wing followed, by more modifications in the shop; then reassembly and setting up of a template for the prep of second wing's assembly. In the meantime, Pikey is busy getting himself a piece of tail.... erhm, building himself a piece of tail - evidentially he wants tail pretty badly.
Time for dinner.... OMG - Butterfly Lisa was busy prepping food in the oven, on the stove, and on the grill.... what a trooper!! And this woman can cook - enough to feed three armies. Yum! Thank you, Lisa!
Time to kick back, have a beer or two, or three, discuss a few ideas on how the tail will attach and be supported - get cleaned up... and off to bed.
After an early rise, I'm off to crawl under the Bitch... Love you, Clarice - while Pikey and Goth go back at it with the second wing and tail assemblies. Lemme tell you, there is NOT much space under a 1971 Cadillac Hearse ... even less under on that has been loaded down with an upper deck, 200 lbs of bondo and 10 layers of paint (most black). Ok, maybe I exaggerate a little on the bondo and paint weight... but there is not much space under that beast. I roll around for quite a while, tickling her underside, asking her, coaxing her, tweaking her so that she'll give up her parts - her starter solenoid.... and when she finally does give up that part, what's she do... she hides one bolt, in the tiniest of crevasses. All this effort to NOT remove the starter is now in vain.... starter must come off to retrieve aforementioned bolt. I grunt, I groan, I cuss at the bitch... but I get the starter, already sans solenoid off..... and instantly the bolt drops into my awaiting hand. The Bitch likes me a little it would seem. So, now with starter off, bolt found and all... I reassemble the starter and solenoid - so much easier than doing it in place, slide the starter back in place and then start the rehookup process. Starter slides right in, and with a few grunts, is reattached. Solenoid, on the other hand... well, lemme just say - four large gauge attachments on one post ... yeah, that caused me much aggravation, bitching and swearing at the Bitch - gotta remind you... I still love her. Struggles ensue.... we argue, she wins. Bitch - they seemingly always do, dont they? .... so, I make a promise, and I kid you not, she fucking INSTANTLY gives up the sweet spot - with gooey hands and all, I'm IN - and it feels good. Tighten everything up, recheck to make sure all attachments are good, and tools out from under her.. and we're good. Attach battery, and rouse Gothy to get her keys. It takes her a few cranks to get started - not because of the starter or solenoid, which are performing just like new, but rather because she's sat a while and she dont like the fuel that's been sitting her her carbs..... but vaaroom vaaroom once she's running.... NICE! Goth and Pikey add a little tranny fluid - she leaks, even after last year's rebuild .... and then Goth drives her over to assist in the raising of the Temple's second wing.
We all rest a few minutes, then back to building - Pikey and Skir have to get going soonish..... second wing raising and articulating goes up with very few hitches - all nicely falling in place... WOOHOO, we've a two winged, no headed or tailed bird.... well, kinda... we've a skeleton crane - with no head or tail (Pikey's gotta work on his tail getting skills more [new note: ok, tail assembly is in progress - Pikey did good, just no time and some design ideas to be worked out yet on articulation/fastening). Oh so feels good to be seeing progress.. and she looks cool so far!

Oh... yes, for dramatic purposes, I did not tell you the promises I made with Clarice that made her give me her sweet spot...... I was down there, playing with those last four wires (and small post) for quite a while. She was NOT giving it up, I was swearing like a (four wires, one nut from done).... well, I was swearing and grumbling a lot .... we'll leave it at that. As soon as I open my mouth and make my promise to her that if she gives me the room I need and allows me to get these wires attached - she does - literally, as the words are finishing coming out of my mouth. The promise... I promised her, and will keep said promise, "Come on Baby, if you give it to me now, I promise that later this summer, I'll get good and drunk and ride you ALL night long!" Bam, I'm in, wires are attached and the nut is on.

its looking like well have to take you up on your very very kind offer of floor space, Skirblah. nothing else has come through, and were pretty desperate at this point. on the upside, todd can get a job immediately in any nursing home, since theyre the less desirable jobs, and no one likes wiping old people ass. well stay out of your way as much as possible, lol. ill clean your house, and while i admit im a terrible cook, i can bake some mean shit from scratch, and will make you espressos and whatnot. at very least youll have a house slave to torture with your dirty laundry and cleaning. :)

the tenative plan is to be out of here and on the road within the next few days, but the way things go for us, that could be down the tubes just as easily. so yeah, thats the news, wish there was something better to report. in any case, were excited to be in the area, we cant wait to help with the work and planning for BM. hope everyone else is having a nice week, looks like well see you all soon.

well guys, we wanted to take a moment to write you all, being as its been so long. so much has happened in the last few months that i can barely remember it all to retell. the short version is weve been kicked out of multiple places now for unforseen and rather shitty reasons, and have been left to couch hop with our toddler, depending on the kindnesses of others to survive while todd waited for his liscence to come in the mail. the last place we were staying before here was terrible, though better than a car... the lady's dogs were shitting all over our bed and all over the floor, and we just couldnt let the baby live in such filth. clutter is one thing, but filth is another.

as a last resort we moved in with todds mom. (cue scary DOOM music.) todds mom has always hated me, as im not a "normal" kind of girl. we figured it was just temporary, his liscence would be here any day, and he could get a job and get us the fuck out of dodge. well... men plan, god laughs right? over the last few days she had been getting more and more combative, and last night she blew her top completely. screamed at me, physically attacked me, threatened to try and take sephira from us, and just got really nasty in general. after all that she said we needed to get the hell out of her house.

just before the fall out, todd got hs liscence number online, after a year of hell and struggle, he FINALLY got what weve been waiting for, except... as seems to be the pattern of things for us at the moment, it was not without flaws. turns out the state of california put a hold on his lisence, making it a temporary one, only good for working in california, until he gets a job and starts paying his child support. (mind you, weve only missed paying the last three months when weve had nothing to keep us afloat.) so the plan of him getting a job here and saving money to move back to california is shot, its going to cost $1000 at the very least in gas to get there, and even if we get there, weve got no place to stay. the general plan is to somehow scrounge up as much money as possible, then bum and try travellers aide for the rest. when we get there were hoping we can find someone willing to let us pitch our tent on their land or in their backyard for a month. todd has his liscence so hell be able to get a job anywhere in short order. everyones looking for LVNs, and even if he cant get a desirable job in a hospital, a nursing home will hire him in no time.

so yeah, thats the scoop. its been one thing after another and were really at a loss this time. both our bank accounts are overdrawn, and weve borrowed money from everyone we know trying to keep going. this must be where everything gets shittiest and we have nowhere to go but up. so were putting out the call, if anyone can help in any way, please... now is the time. please help us get our family back to california so we can start our lives. well work like slaves for you, clean your house, do your nasty dishes, and pay you back even $5 loaned to us as soon as he gets a job. for once todd will be making more than peanuts. any clues on any charities of some sort that may help, food banks along the way we can try, etc. hell, well take your penny jar if you put it in a flat rate box and mail it. :) so sorry to sound like beggars here, but we really are SOL and at this point were asking anyone and everyone.

prayers and good vibes are welcomed.

thank you all so much, we may be gone a while, but as soon as we get back online, well be here.
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Hello fellow Theme Camp organizers.

The Rue Morgue and Temple of Community would like to offer you a challenge of a different ilk. Some of your crew is already on this project but we'd like to see a represented piece from your camp.

When we found out that Best wasn't doing a temple this year we started to embark on creating one for the community that each camp could be part of.

We are building a 20 - 30 foot origami crane from wood to burn. It will be a place of mourning, deep thought and release. To say goodbye to loved ones that have left this world.

We are asking various camps to build their own 5 foot version that can be placed next to the main structure in a circle to show that no mater how different we are, together we are a community.

We will be happy to send you scaled down drawings but in the end its your art piece and we'd like you to make it yours. Use the skeleton as a base and keep it to 5 feet high and no more than 4 feet wide.

If you are interested in this challenge please contact me.

THIS OFFER IS OPEN TO UNREGISTERED AS WELL AS REGISTERED THEME CAMPS.

FOR Temple of Community INFO or to JOIN us go to: tribes.tribe.net/templeofcommunity

We also need financial contributions please.

Thank you for your continued support.

This weekend started off with 3D-ing the Crane. Pikey came over and we pondered then cut and hammered, screwed the head, neck and beak. Pikey did most the work that weekend and Id like to say a big thank you! I spent the good part of the weekend making the foundation for a storage shed to house the Rue Morgue stuff as well as the ToC materials/ stuff in. That way it wasnt all over the yard and meadow. As it is the neighbors think were unusual so Id like to keep it that way and not ad slobs or gypsies to the impression, lol. Butterfly and I spend a good portion of Sunday piecing the structure together. Its still not done. Comes in a small box like an Ikea think however its got MANY bits to go through.

At any rate Pikey was out there in the meadow and in the shop making gussets, cutting recutting, engineering, fabbing you name it and completed the skeleton of the Beak, and neck of the crane. It looks lovely and will be used as frontage for the base camp. Pikey will be making his own scaled down crane to share this year at Burning Man 08.

At some point all of us Steamboat, Wiggles, Butterfly, Pikey and Myself were able to take some time out for delicious pizza, beer and wine down the road. It was delicious neener!

I know we have close to $300 in donations so far.... not much, but we're also on the earlier side of things - still pre-build. However, $300 will go FAST (haha, immediately and then some) once build starts.

that all stated.... with a minimal cost of $1500 - and 80 members in this tribe, if we each donate a mere $20, that'll reach $1500 quickly. Yes, I realize some have donated, and other cannot due to all of the various life situations - but if each of you could donate even a little, it'll add up quickly. Keep it within your means, of course, but this will not happen without support from each of us.
Please see the Paypal thread to donate.

I just wrote this at Midwest Burners website to register this project for Interfuse:

"Standing over 20' in height, this semi-replica of the Gateway Arch in St. Louis is meant as a reminder to all of the gateways that we face in life, and the choices that we experience. This art piece is intended to be fully lit at night, telling us that gateways have no time preferences. We will have a permanently constructed box for you to insert your gateway statements of choices you face and how you want to face those choices. At that point, you will be asked to cross under the arch as a statement of faith in yourself in making the choice, and crossing the gateway to the future.

The box will travel, ALONG WITH THE ARCH, the 1700+miles this August to the Black Rock playa, for inclusion as part of the Temple of Community to be constructed there as a part of Black Rock City. We will burn the box along with the temple, as a statement to finally seal your choices for the future.

The finished arch, having traveled to Burningman, will return to be gifted to Gateway Burners for their use. This statement of love, gifting, hope, and commmunity is meant to inspire burners to new efforts and new friendships, to start new chapters in their lives, and to renew their spirits.

Though at first glance it may not fit the theme of Technophilia/Technophobia, perhaps it can inspire us to make those choices and cross those gateways in our lives in the most responsible manner possible."

There. It's been said and submitted. Now I'm committed. I will promote the Temple of Community at Interfuse in Missouri. That covers two, perhaps three states, as Iowa has no burn, and this is the Kansas/Missouri burn. It will have 900 tickets this year, so that's 900 potential contributors of aid in some form or fashion.

I hope this gives everyone here even more hope as we cross the gateway to produce the Temple of Community.
Its a lonely job and Im wondering where the community is. The mock up isnt huge but at least one other hand and some one to talk to other than the dog would be comforting. When the mock up is done we can start in on the bigger structure.

Naturally we will be doing the song and dance with out hats out soliciting donations. Its not glamorous but needs to be done. We will post the wheres and whens as they develop.

Checks can be written to: Lancelot Smith and sent to 535 Irwin Lane , Santa Rosa, CA 95401

Ill deposit them in a separate account and Butterfly will keep a ledger of expenses so at the end you can all see where it went.

Butterfly is going to set up a pay pal account for those pay pal-ers soon.

From what I understand, we've moved from the concept-design stages into the blueprint/plans phase. Hopefully, this will not take too long so that we have a much better idea of what our material needs will be - we're fast approaching the time where we need to start fabricating any and all pieces that we can. Our material list is going to be a long one, so if anyone out there has any resources they can tap into to get low cost materials, that would be great. Free/repurposed would be even better - anyone know where David's Best Temple Crews got their repurposed exterior lumber?

Actually, that brings up a secondary topic: what are your opinions on using repurposed materials from the the same source that the previous Temple Crew used? In some ways I am hesitant; I think it might give the greater community the impression that this is another DB temple - or that we are trying to copy his style. That is NOT our intent here - and I don't want to give the community that impression; however, free/low cost resources (especially those that are recycled) would be awesome.

Other than that, we have accumulated a little bit in the funds pot; however, this is another area where we could really use some assistance. Anyone willing to make a donation? Anyone willing to find ANY grants/etc that we can tap into?

Thanks
