History of Prostitutes Day:
Roman fashion when April 23rd was known as Dies
Meretricum or "Prostitutes Day."

Roman courtesans worshipped at the two major temples
of Venus in Rome, one of which (by the Colline Gate)
was quite similar to a Temple on Mount Eryx in Sicily
founded by the famous Aphrodite cult of harlots, later
called Venus Erycina. While Venus was a goddess
native to Italy, she became imbued with the attributes
of other more ancient dieties like Astarte and
Aphrodite over time. Venus was the protectress of the
hetairae, or dancing girls who entertained with music,
dance and sexual favors at festivals. Latin uses the
word venus for lust and sexual love, and venum means
that which is for sale.

As a divine guardian of vineyards and gardens, the
April 23rd to 28th wine festival called Vinalia Priora
was associated with Venus and this fest segued into
Floralia (April 28th to May 1st) which honored Flora,
the Goddess of flowers and vegetation. From April
23rd on, Roman prostitutes were specially feted and
there was much revelry, including provocative drinking
games and athletic contests.

This time of year always featured fertility festivals
in the ancient world like the Semitic Goddess
Astarte's late April "milk and honey" celebration of
nature's abundance and sexuality. Jewish mythology
made her into Astoreth, a female demon of lust, but
there was no way comparative religion could bury the
archetypal thread that connects Inanna, Isis, Astarte,
Ishtar, Aphrodite and Venus.
