Re: Ten Mile tide Chat room discussion about Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fri, November 14, 2008 - 12:38 PMtoo funny! but i have to disagree w/ stacy... english major or not. i think yea is like "aye" (the opposite of nay). and yay is like "yay we won!"
here's what someone from Washington State University has to say about the 3 (yea/yay/yeah):
“Yea” is a very old-fashioned formal way of saying “yes,” used mainly in voting. It’s the opposite of—and rhymes with—“nay.” When you want to write the common casual version of “yes,” the correct spelling is “yeah” (sounds like “yeh” ). When the third grade teacher announced a class trip to the zoo, we all yelled “yay!” (the opposite of “boo”!). That was back when I was only yay big.
oh, and "yay" could also be slang for a certain drug.... not that i'd know anything about that! ;-) -

Re: Ten Mile tide Chat room discussion about Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mon, November 17, 2008 - 9:54 PMit was funnier the 2nd time actually. frustrating the first time because the chat flies by so fast (all of that took about 30 seconds to appear, we were all typing as fast as possible).
i found your yay in online dictionaries, but i still believe in my yea. yea is pronounced the same as yay, that is definitely true, by every dictionary definition. it DOES NOT mean yeah, which means yes. it has always bothered me when people use yea when they mean yes, because i read it wrong.
Wikipedia says: Yea can refer to:
* A common misspelling of the word "yeah" which means "yes." See also ya.
that was my main point. but, i didn't even know yay existed as a word, so that's a new one on me - definitely slang. i'm not going to change my ways or admit defeat though (no el-hajj would).
here's my argument:
in the case of yea or nay, yea is in support of something, which easily translates to "yea for tmt sacramento!" as I am totally in support.
i am sure that's where the use of "yea!" as an exclamation came from, so why would we have to spell it differently?
btw i am totally correct that yea is not a slang word. wikipedia also says it's "an archaic word meaning "yes", as in the phrase, "yea or nay." Frequently misspelled as "yay".
an archaic word is NOT slang that is constantly changing, as someone said.
all right, now i have to go do my real homework!

Re: Ten Mile tide Chat room discussion about Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tue, November 18, 2008 - 1:04 AMMan, it did go fast! I can't type that fast :)
Thanks for clearing that up Stacy. I thought that yea meant yay but thought that people would confuse it for yeah, hence my phonetic spelling of yay. I don't think that yay is a real word (and neither does my spell checker :) So should we go back to using yea now instead of yay and hope that it spreads across the land? -
