Ten Miles High

While being very productive here at my office I was thinking about the most wasted I have ever been at a Ten Mile Tide show. Then I started to feel better about Chico because I have been WAY more wasted than I was on Saturday evening. I decided to type out the top three most wasted Tide experiences.

#3 – I think there are a few shows that could qualify as the 3rd most wasted ever at a Tide show – last weekend in Chico definitely being one of them – However, I am going to go with the 2nd time ever seeing Ten Mile Tide as the third most wasted I have ever been at a Tide show. It was 2002 (six years ago) and Tamara had Flow on repeat in her car…non stop. We had seen Ten Mile Tide once before at a String Cheese after party at Blakes in Berkeley. I was walking downtown and saw that Ten Mile Tide was opening up for Tea Leaf Green at SLO Brew in downtown San Luis Obispo. I told Tamara and she was fired up. Of course, I did some massive pre partying at The Balboa before the show. Tequila was once again my best friend. I made it down to the show, completely wasted, and caught Ten Mile Tide’s last few songs. The guys finished and I remember trying to make some conversation with Steve but being totally incoherent. I talked with Marc, Justin, and Jason a bit while we had a beer. This was 2002 and TLG was not who they are now so the venue was not even very crowded. Well, I was hammered and invited the band to stay at our place in Shell Beach for the night…they said cool. Tamara arrived a few songs into the Tea Leaf Green set and I told her that I invited the band whom she had on repeat in her car over to our house to spend the night. Tamara freaked out. She was so embarrassed that I would get soooo drunk and do something like invite these rock stars over to our house. She thought that the guys in the band must think that I was some sort of stocker psycho. Tamara was so embarrassed that she made me leave the show, sneak out the back door, and leave the Tide hanging without even letting them know we were leaving. I hope they found somewhere to stay. The next day I called in sick to work.

#2 – Tamara and I were heading to the City to see another Tide show at the Connecticut Yankee. We were stoked because Stacy had called and said we could stay with her and Jeff at the Hilton just off of Union Square. It was a rainy day surely would be a rainy night…but we were stoked to see Ten Mile Tide. We got to town early enough to meet up some friends and check out the Oyster and Beer festival at Fort Mason. Beer after Beer after Beer followed by oysters. We figured that we had enough oysters and would not need to eat dinner. I arrived at the Tide show…wasted…and the first thing that happened was Alex bought me a shot of whiskey…first off…I do not take shots of whiskey. What is one without two…right? Lots of dancing and partying continued. I remember Tamara and Deb jumping up on the stage sometime late second set…they were both rock stars. The show ended and I spent 20 minutes thinking that I lost my keys forgetting that I took a taxi to the Yankee. It was raining outside and things seemed hopeless. Well, I guess we should start walking. We got about two blocks from the venue when a sweet Lexus pulled up and the driver said jump in. Holy shit, Alex was going to save the day. His dad, drunk, was in the front passenger seat and Tamara and I jumped into the back seat with a passed out Deb. Alex asks where our hotel is…I had no clue. I think we are at the Hilton…or Hyatt…I could not remember but I knew I would be able to recognize it. Alex drove us around San Francisco for what seemed like 40 minutes until we found the place. He dropped us right in front. Tamara passed out in bed and I decided that I was hungry…I wandered downstairs and out into the rainy street. Some bum starts walking with me and ends up giving me something to try. WOW that worked…I went solo to an Irish bar next to hotel…last call…more whiskey. I make it up to our room just as Jeff and Stacy make it back from the Yankee. Thanks Alex…I love the Tide Family!

#1 – My 29th Birthday Party at Whole Earth Festival with Blue Turtle Seduction, Ten Mile Tide, and Home at Last - back to back to back on the main stage. The Patron was flowing and I was up on stage giving the audio engineer a margarita before I got busted the first time by campus security. I told them it was my birthday and they let me off. About 20 minutes later I got busted again back stage talking to the turtle guys with yet another margarita. After the third time I got busted they said that I was in danger of being escorted off of campus as this was a dry festival. It got dark between the Ten Mile Tide and Lost at Last set. I made it through most of Lost at Last and remember being blown away by Sean’s sick guitar work….then things went dark…people were looking for me everywhere and were worried that I was finally escorted off campus. Steve, Justin and Jason were all checking the porta-potties to see if I had passed out in one. Tamara and my parents were starting to get frightened. All of a sudden I am awakened by a celebratory yell from Jeff saying “hey guys, I found him, he is right here, I got him.” Apparently I had climbed into the drivers seat of the red tide van and passed out there for nearly an hour. However, I redeemed myself by waking up early the next morning and driving from Sacramento up to Tahoe to see Tide play outside on the ski deck at Alpine Meadows.

I hope to leave the list at that for a while and not break back into the top three…but…you never know when you are going to need a great rendition of “Never Gonna Drink Again”

I have time for a short review only here. Trying to count up how many TMT shows I've seen and I'll put the number at 6.

I'll say that show number 6 at Moes was the creme-de-la-creme of the crop. Whoa Nellie what a show!! This was the danciest show to date. The funk was brought. The band sounded excellent at Moes, lots of space on stage.

The crowd was not large in quantity but lets say the entire dance floor was well used. The HB precense was very nice on-stage with Derek on banjo all night long and Mike Kimmel (new HB'er and exile at the Lizard Ranch) bringing big beats on the congo. Thanks TMT and HBers on stage. Awesome performance.

It reminded me so much of some of the 2003 RRE shows when 50 people showed up and 50 people danced their bo-hunks off. They also did the "one-long-set" show ala RRE.

Our only disaapoint was that the show was not taped. I can't recall all the highlights but I'll say Mike+Knuckles on grandpas farm was off-the-hook. My new favorite song. When you listen to the new album and hear the big drum beats on grandpa's fram just imaging taking that whole things to another level of drum beats. Then just keep on going with it. Late In the Evening, excellent! Extended Disco beats on Disco Bus (slap that shit jeff) and Jason the master of the wah-wah.

And lets not forget the late night set in the strawbale barn... RRE tunes 'til the dawn! When's the next show???

With the band headed to Modesto, our group of me, Amber, Stacy, Josh, Chris, Critt, Fargo, & Drew decided to go wine tasting in Paso Robles before that night's show in San Luis Obispo. It was lots of fun, and I think almost everyone bought at least one bottle somewhere. We tried one wine called "Agave" that was 18% alcohol and could either be sipped or mixed with Margarita mix in place of tequila. I think we hit about 5-6 wineries before they all closed their tastings. My pics are all from the last place we tasted at, where we also had some very tasty garlic cheese & crackers. Yummy!

After wine tasting we headed over to The Balboa, which was the house that Chris lived in when he was in college -- kinda like a frat house but without the official greek affiliation. They have a website and host a big horseshoes tournament every year. We ate dinner, got a 5-gallon keg of Sierra Nevada, and commenced prepartying. We all rode over to the show in Los Osos in Fluffy, Josh's RV. Yeah disco RV! :) Interesting crowd at the Sweet Springs Saloon. Lots of what seemed like locals there who never left the bar area to check out the band, and a few "wild & crazy guys" (one of them is wearing a plaid jacket in my pics) from Cal Poly who were there to get out, do something different, and let loose! And let loose they did, ala that Steve Martin skit from SNL! Too funny. Stacy got hit on by yet another woman, and Josh screwed up his knee when he accidentally dove off a 3-foot wall on his way back into the club after setbreak. D'oh! The crowd was pretty into the music though, and I think several new fans were made that night. Setlist-wise, I can't think of any new covers but I think they did play Diamonds again, along with a bunch of stuff off the new CD, and another Disco Bus, which was turning into the breakout hit of the tour -- people just can't help but get up and dance when the guys bust that one out! Someone (I'm guessing one of the wild & crazy guys) even started a "PLAY ALL NIGHT!!!" chant at some point during the 2nd set. After the show, we flyered the Cal Poly guys with our "hippie music" stuff (HSMF and Joshua Tree Fest flyers), waited while Knuckles did his tetris thing trying to fit all the equipment in the trailer, and packed everyone into vehicles to head back to the Balboa.

The afterparty at Balboa started a little shaky when we realized that the keg we counted on being there was empty upon our return. The Balboa strikes again! I wish I would have taken a picture of passed-out-guy at the table. And Fargo all cuddled up with the doggie's behind... that was hilarious! Hmmm... not too hard to figure out what happened to all the beer! The good news was that we had a secret beer stash in the cooler, and Fluffy was fully stocked! Once again, party on! Mr. Munning even came over for a bit! We got a little performance from Eli, so much fun! And Justin spent a little time out in the RV with his buddy Whiskey, so he was shuffling (I mean dancing) around entertaining us all. I'm not all that clear on time, but I'm guessing by around 4AM we had outlasted everyone who lived in the house and Josh (whose injured knee was swollen up to about 3x normal size by this time) decided it was time for fire poi! Oh yes, this sounds like a smart idea: a bunch of drunks playing with fire, all lead by a guy with a bum knee who kept catching his jeans on fire as he was demonstrating (which was totally "normal" according to Josh). I think Chris was the only one who actually tried it besides Josh, and he was really pretty good, especially for his first time! I also want to take this time to thank Josh for sacrificing pretty much his entire stock of beer and at least one bottle of scotch or whiskey. The afterparty gods were pleased.

After some sleep and some food, we said good-bye to everyone on our little tour (except Josh who I believe is STILL on tour w/ the guys). Amber, Stacy, Jeff, and I made our way down to LA to try to find a place to shower. A quick stop at Vons for some (dish) towels and a few showers later and we were at 14 Below with Amber & Stacy’s brother (also named Jeff) in tow. There we met Lauren and Knuckles’s longtime friend Steve-o, among others. TMT was opening for Cubensis, a Dead cover band, that night so their set was early. There weren’t too many people out that night, but I’d say there were at least as many people as the last time they played there. Poor Justin had a long night the night before, and he was pretty haggard and forgot the words a couple of times, which I thought was damn funny. Oh well, no harm done. The highlight of the evening was when Steve got to play a few songs with Cubensis. He sounded so good they kept him on stage for longer than expected! Let’s see... I think he played Franklin’s Tower, Mississippi Half Step, and um, maybe Uncle John’s Band? Is that right? Was there one more? Anyway, we were all very proud. J Once Steve was finished playing, we stayed for another few songs then Amber, Stacy, and I headed on our way back to SD b/c Stacy and I both had to work the next morning. I can’t believe how much fun we had though! Yeah Ten Mile Tide! TIDE! TIDE! TIDE!

I wrote my recap of our little TMT tour and it was about 2 pages, so to make it more palatable I'm going to break it down into segments. Here's part 1: the CD Release Party

First of all, I can't believe it was almost 2 weeks ago! Stacy, Amber, and I left San Diego Friday morning a little later than we planned, but other than that the road trip up to SF was pretty uneventful from what I remember. Of course, I was also busy retoxing (approx. every hour, as Amber later told everyone) so my short term memory might be a little off. Oh, it was raining most of the way too. Anyway, we got to SF and drove around in circles for a bit until we found Chris's friend's place where we were staying. A few more times around the block looking for a place to park, and viola! rock star parking pretty much right in front of the apt and no parking restrictions or meter to worry about! Bodes well for the weekend to come. CMO and crew showed up just as we were parking too. Sweet! Party on! It was fun to finally meet Chris after all the chatter on the list here and hearing so much about him from Amber & Stacy. Also nice to meet his sister Callie, Drew, and the 2 other Chris's (Critt & Fargo). Hope I'm not forgetting anyone, but if so I sincerely apologize and please don't take it personally -- remember, I may or may not have short term memory loss. ;-) We all drank and hung out for a bit, then got all fancied up for the night's festivities. Stacy was wearing her actual prom dress, all light blue and puffy like a princess gown or a fairy. Amber was wearing a bride's maid dress that her mom wore in the 70's. Fun stuff. :) Even more fun was once we got to see the band in their outfits! I particularly liked the artist-formerly-known-as-Knuckles getup, hehe. As we ate dinner and waited for the show to start, people started arriving in force! Great to meet Michelle, Sarah, Alex & Deb, and Josh from this list, and also Brian, Kiera, KC, pushin the good vibes Craig, and to see Kristen and Happy Brigaders Erin & Dean, Derek & Randi, Yost, Luke.... shoot, am I missing anyone? (I know MOLLY wasn't there like she said she would be. *ahem* We missed you Molly!)

By the time Eli Charleston (fun ragtime singer/songwriter who's traveling with them for a few weeks) finished his opening set, the place was packed! As for the show, Ophelia was smokin! Totally loved that one! They also broke out Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes and Mississippi Half-Step, as well as pretty much the whole new CD (it WAS the CD release party) and Disco Bus and Never Gonna Drink Again, off the top of my head. The guys' voices and harmonies are sounding so good right now! Derek Bodkin from the HB sat in on banjo for several songs and that was a real treat! He sounded absolutely fabulous with TMT!!!! Yeah banjo!! Such a good show, so much positive energy! And the atmosphere at the Yankee was stocked with family and friends and full of love! Ask Stacy and the 80's girls how full, hehehe. ;-) Another fun surprise for me was getting a note from HBer Marie, randomly put up on the wall outside the bathrooms. Oh yeah, good times! One thing I was reminded of that night was the old saying "time flies when you're having fun" because it certainly did that night at the Yank! The afterparty was pretty mellow because the band had to be in Modesto the next day in time to play a noon set. Jeff & Justin eventually made their way over for a couple hours and a few beers (and more Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan moments in the stairwell, although I don't remember THAT from any of their movies!).

OH, and the big shocker -- Kristen has decided to see what life is like NOT on the road with TMT. I know the guys will miss her bigtime in various ways, but good luck in the real world Kristen!! I'm sorry we never got to talk so I could hear what your plans are! Whatever you're doing, I'm sure you'll be great! It was definitely strange for you not to be at the other CA shows.
