EJ Jones and Kevin Hartnell will be here in Midland! They will be joined by Richard Kean and providing some live musical and comedy entertainment in the form of "Teribus".

EJ and Kevin will also be teaching! So don't miss this!

{Information taken from the band's website www.teribusmusic.com }

TERIBUS is a bagpipe and drum quartet playing Celtic and Tribal music influenced by musical traditions from around the world. Led by Kevin Hartnell, Richard Kean, EJ Jones, and Al Cofrin, the TERIBUS lineup has many years of experience playing pipes and drums at outdoor festivals. Their love of performance in a variety of settings is evident from the high energy and spirit of fun they bring to every show. Although their classical training and desire to please the musical academics in the crowd is always in the back of their minds, TERIBUS is equally likely to engage in antics never before seen in concert halls, creating the perfect combination for any festive event.

Richard Kean has over 25 years experience as a bagpiper and has performed extensively throughout Europe and North America. Richard began his career under the tutelage of his father Pipe Major Eric Kean and continued to learn under several prominent Scottish bagpipers. In 1996 Richard formed a performance group with P/M Lindsay Davidson and began to develop the bagpipe beyond its traditional role in music. During this time he studied other types of bagpipe music in addition to exploring ways to integrate dance and audience interaction within a musical performance. Since then Richard has perfomed with several groups continuing his interested in taking the bagpipes outside the norm. In his spare time he rummages for unique instruments and listens to some very strange music.
www.richardkean.com

Kevin “Nevik” Hartnell has over 33 years of studying drums beginning his professional music career at age 12. Since 1999, Kevin has been active in the medieval and renaissance music scene with performances at festivals across the United States, Scandinavia and Europe. In his spare time, he enjoys graphic design and photography.

www.kevinhartnell.com

EJ Jones has over 20 years experience as a bagpiper with great success in both the concert and competitive aspects of Scottish piping. He began playing the Texas Renaissance Festival as a bagpiper with the group Clandestine in 1991 and the Rogues in their inaugural year 1994. EJ competes at the Professional level in the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association and won the Houston Highland Games Professional Piobaireachd competition in 2006. In his spare time EJ makes Scottish smallpipes in his home workshop and plays the flute.

(There is now a fourth band member, Al Cofrin (yay!) but unfortunately he is unable to make the event).

TRIBAL FORCE WORKSHOPS:

* EJ JONES: Introduction to Breton Dance (Sat 10:45am-12:45pm 2hrs $30)

Breton dance is an old tradition from when houses were built on dirt foundations. The family building the house would invite over the whole community to drink cider and dance on the spot where the house would be built to stomp down the dirt. The simple dances taught in this workshop are accessible to people with no dance experience because they emphasize bringing the whole community together in rhythm. The music played during the dance is characterized by a call and response usually done by two singers or instrumentalists. These dances are still done today in Brittany and music and dance are still vibrant parts of everyday life. Come learn some easy dances for any time you're at a concert of Celtic music.

* KEVIN HARTNELL: -Tekronomicon- Beginners Doumbek (Sun 8:30am-10:30am 2hrs $30)

Beginners doumbek class covering tones, techinque, rhythms, and exercises:: • Tekronomicon • is a book of over 100 exercises and drills for the aspiring darbuka (doumbek) player and features a primer on learning split finger/hand technique throughout. The "Tekronomicon" (LOD Records 2006) The "Tekronomicon" is designed to help the drummer to build skills by establishing a regimen of various exercises and rhythms to work on. The book features basic through advanced material (plenty of photos too), including traditional rhythms and many variations featuring split finger/hand technique. This technique divides each hand into 2 striking areas which can increase speed and dexterity as well as provide a fun challenge to players of all levels. Copies are available for $15. The Tekronomicon has already been shipped to over 16 countries around the world. The book can be ordered online at: http://www.legionofdoumbek.com/tekro.htm . Please bring your own drum.

Disclaimer: Press Alt + F4 to skip the loony rant.

Shortly after pulling the ripcord, we dropped directly in the center of one of the bridge battles. Richard managed to deflect an amazing amount of spear thrusts but an archer managed to hit the bag on his medieval great pipes. Fortunately, he always carries a can of Fix-Uh-Flat. Our first gig was performing for the Phenomotologist Camp to celebrate the birthday of L. Bon McGbbard. They were quite an odd lot, to say the least. After beating a hasty retreat, we made our way to the food court to gorge ourselves with cans of snails topped with cool whip.

It's times like these that make you question the sanity of the people around you. I saw elves herding sheep, vampires gnashing teeth at a bard, glowsticks in the shape of mashed potatoes, and two drummers playing perfectly in sync! I had to sit down awhile to take it all in.

EJ somehow managed to get his new leather belt caught in a wood chipper. Just before the whirling blades o' doom sliced 'n' diced him into fiddly bits, he jammed his nickle-plated codpiece into the works and saved the day. We jumped for joy but our spirits were quickly dampened as the owner of the wood chipper charged us for repairs.

While performing on top of the mountain my strap broke on the big drum. It rolled down the hill, gathering snow around it, until it was the size of 3/4 of a '64 Volkswagon Bug. It plowed through the fort gates, crushing a smoothie someone had left sitting on the ground, and came to rest at the base of a man named Figboot! After much negotiation, an agreement was made for the return of the drum. It took me hours to locate a chipmunk fur-lined pair of boxer briefs in size XXXXL! All hail the power of GPS! You can find ANYTHING!

War week was extremely exhausting. The band packed everything back in the tardis and headed back to Gallifrey. Business as usual...

Thanks Pennsic! It was great fun! Darkmoon - your house rocks like no other! Thanks to everyone who attended the concert on Thursday at the Performing Arts Pavilion! We look forward to Pennsic in 2009!

I began the drive down to Oklahoma on Thursday at around noon after loading the car with individually wrapped cheese slices. I stopped just inside the Arkansas state line to sleep at a (no) rest area. It was muggy so I opened the window (which was difficult with so much cheese in the car), letting in mosquitoes that tried to keep me up all night (they had their iPods cranked up listening to outtakes from some forgotten Tiffany CD). I rolled the window up and fended off the attack for awhile. It became pretty warm as the car burned so I started it up and cooled things off a bit with the A/C. Needless to say, sleep was elusive that night (no warm milk, cookies, or strong sedatives available). I started the second half of the trip around 7:34am. The weather became a little nasty once I arrived in Oklahoma (two badgers went flying overhead caught in a gust). After the short business meeting the wind kicked up and mangled a few tents, including the huge tent that was covering our stage. Beer and peanuts were strewn about into crop circles. Richard arrived around 8:30pm, roughly 2 hours after me. We were able to check into the Holy Inn Princess Cabins without a problem. There were used mints stuck to our pillows and the fridge was stocked with Blue Diamond light beer and a bag of moldy pretzels as per our rider.
We arrived on site just in time to get organized (too much starch in our leisure suits though) and go play our first show at 10:30am. We played and eventually an audience appeared (in the beer tent line). At the end of the day, we ate at a local restaurant next to a dog kennel. We returned to the hotel and jumped in the pool to cool off. Unfortunately the water had been drained.
Sunday went about the same as Saturday except that 24 hours had passed. We had to pack everything up after leaving the hotel since we needed to check out. Richard loaded up his microbus with his collection of tie-dyed blankets and Guatemalan underwear. I enjoyed some fruit loops for breakfast courtesy of the free, incontinent breakfast. Eggs don’t always sit well (they don't fetch, and they sure as hell can't catch a frisbee), so cereal took care of business. At the end of the day, we loaded up, drove into Oklahoma, and ate at a really good Mexican restaurant. We had macaroni & cheese, pancakes, and something called a saco-de-toro filled with jello pudding.

I started my drive back home on Monday with a stop in Memphis where I took approximately 527 photos of a brick and visited a place called the Blue Monkey's Royal Order of Prescott Cheese and Bologna Factory, Inc. I ordered the stuffed mushrooms (excellent) and a spinach and artichoke “crisp." It was like a pizza baked on a tortilla made out of polystyrene. Very good… I drove into Nashville and got a room for the night. They were out of beds but made amends by providing me with a free folding chair next to the ice machine for 50% off! It was great and I only had to reach out and touch an ice cube. After waking up, I made my way into Nashville to check things out. Barbara Mandrill was driving a steam roller over Vince Gill for charity. I had a look at the old Belle Honey Meade Theater (which was under construction…again). This magnificent theater was where I enjoyed classics like "Earnest Goes To Jail" and the unforgettable uh...whatever. I visited the Monster Mushroom Head for a tasty pizza (pesto, undried tomatoes, peta, head cheese, and fake wine) after a stop at the Great Escape (a head shop for Circus performers). Eventually I made my way back on the road (after a few swerves and a small skid). I saw a squirrel.

Celtic Music for Melodic Instruments w/ EJ Jones

12:00-1:30pm

Bring your melodic instrument and learn a few Celtic tunes from E.J.'s huge catalog and gain a better understanding of Celtic music. Smallpipes, flutes, recorders, guitars, whistles, etc. are all welcome!

A bit about EJ Jones...
EJ Jones began learning the bagpipes in 1986 at the St Thomas
Episcopal school in Houston Tx under the tutelage of Michael Cusack.
In the early 1990's he played in the Hamilton Pipe Band directed by
Donald MacPhee and in 1993 the band won the Best Overseas award at
the World Pipe Band Championships. EJ was also a founding member of
the folk group Clandestine which toured the US extensively between
1998 and 2003. In 2006 EJ returned to the competition platform
winning the Professional Piobaireachd event at the Houston Highland
Games. Since 1991 EJ has been a regular performer at the North Texas
Irish Festival, the Bethlehem Celtic Classic and numerous other
Celtic music festivals across the country. In 2003 he released his
first solo album, "The WIllow", which features many of his own
compositions accompanied by the renowned guitarist Gerry O'Beirne and
fiddler Rosie Shipley. EJ now lives in Asheville, North Carolina
where he makes Scottish smallpipes and records for Teribus.

Bagpipe Master Class w/ Richard Kean

1:30-3:00pm

This class is open to players of all levels. Richard will cover bagpipe mechanics, maintenance, construction, how the instrument works , how a reed works as well as any other topics students may want to cover.

A bit about Richard Kean...
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Richard Kean has been piping since age "very wee." During his childhood Richard studied with several prominent pipers, Even McRae, Alan McDonald, and Rene Cuson to name a few. Richard's studies gave him an intimate knowledge of his instrument and lead to the development of an exciting catalog of contemporary music for the Highland Bagpipes and Scottish Smallpipes. His love of piping has taken him through some of the strangest places in North America and Europe playing in every venue imaginable. During his travels Richard has collected several different bagpipes and regularly does presentations of the various bagpipes of Europe. While in Scotland, Richard apprenticed with Nigel Richard of Garvie bagpipes as a bagpipe maker. Richard now makes bagpipes specializing in custom Highland Bagpipes and Medieval Great Pipes.

Richard has performed with the world champion Hamilton Pipe Band, Poor Man's Fortune, Jiggernaut, Stockbridge Pipe Band, & Medicine Hat Pipe Band. He currently performs with Teribus, Needfire, and Jiggernaut.

We are pleased to announce that we are going through the final bits of recording and editing before we send our tracks off to be mastered and mass-produced! Hopefully we will have the LP ready to sell sometime in April.

We are very grateful to those of you who have prepaid the LP for being so patient with us. We really tried to get this thing finished this winter, and we apologize that this didn't happen--we want to provide you with the best possible recordings, so instead of rushing the album out we decided to postpone it.
That being said, we are VERY pleased with the results so far and will be delivering to you a professional product.

Once we release the album we will be putting together a CD release party and will be available for touring around later this year.
If you are putting together a bellydance workshop weekend somewhere and want a great live band drop us a line!!!

I drove up to Dayton to catch my flight at 8-something am. The flight left on time (maybe I should have been on the plane?). I tried to sleep on the way to Dallas but most of the bags in cargo were the hardshell kind and I couldn't find any pillows by the landing gear. The second leg of the flight to San Diego proved interesting as California was on fire. I took photos of the wildfires burning away, casting monstrous plumes of smoke into the sky (one of them looked like Satan eating a banana). There had been so much burning that it seemed like the entire sky was hazy. Seeing the plane land so close to the wildfires was eerie. I've never played while on fire before...it could be a challenge! The minute I was walking toward the baggage claim area, Richard called me on the phone (how did he get my number?!?). Everyone else was already there. I loaded my things into the stolen van and we took off to find (a bank and some ski masks) the hotel and check in. We stayed at a Quantity Inn which was pretty clean if you don't count the dead hooker under the mattress. We ate food (drank) at some place (skipped out on the bill) and talked a bit about how to tune bagpipes and if it was even possible and various theories surrounding this hot topic. The group decided to drive over to the site, check in with The Boss, and get some rehearsal (drinking) time in. Unfortunately, Richard forgot to bring his pipes and underwear. Fortunately The Boss had some spare underwear so the rehearsal went off without any further hitches. The organizers had been evacuated from their home and were sleeping in a friend's barn along with quite a few other people involved. I think we went out to eat (drink) again afterwards.

We drove out to the site (Toasty Polo Club Grounds) around 8:30am (wtf?). Things were running at least an hour behind schedule as patrons scrambled to douse themselves of flame. That gave us time to stand around and do nothing. Eventually things started cooking. The Boss had us lead the procession into the jousting arena (which is better than following the horses!). We added a bit of sound to the clash of the jousters via belches, flatulence, and the occasional "heave ho!" Some smart ass kid in the audience yelled out “you’re an embarrassment” at some point to a jouster (I don’t know which one). The jousters have a good sense of humor and took everything in stride (pun intended). Paramedics removed the lance from his...uh...After the first round, we played some short sets in the little marketplace behind a privy. There were some good compliments about the band adding to the atmosphere as most people in the crowd had never seen a live band before. They only have wax bands in California. We made our way back to the main arena gate to process in for the second round. The second round of jousting went better (three dead horses and a jouster cleaved in half by a falling coke machine).

At the end of the day, we recorded a video and took photos (under the bleachers). We also had a chance to sit around and spend some time meeting the jousters and sharing stories. One jouster told us a tale about a man from Australia who moved to a remote place in New Zealand to enjoy a bit of hermit life. After a couple of months, a big biker guy shows up at his house and invites him to a party. The guy is excited and agrees to attend. The biker warns him that there would be loud music. The man says no problem because he likes music too! The biker warns him that there would be drinking. The man doesn’t mind and admits that he enjoys drinking too! The biker tells him that there would be lots of sex involved and the man exclaims his excitement and asks when he should come over. The biker tells him it doesn’t matter since they would be the only two at the party!

The band said goodbye to the jousters and drove back to the San Diego Brewery Company for (drinks) dinner. They had a decent root beer. It was $2.90! Well, so much for my cut of the wages! I walked home in disgust, leaving a trail of burnt breadcrumbs...

Richard (aka Darth Piper), E.J. (aka Nice Guy Eddie) and I drove separately out to the event site. Richard and I arrived first (which is odd cuz he's always late), checked in at troll, and parked the horse and cart. I ran into my friend Tamara at Troll (she lived in Cincinnati for awhile). No, that’s not part of some Abbott and Costello routine. "Darth" and I walked around the site in the merchant area for awhile. Good idea when the pockets are full, bad when they contain dust bunnies. I found the Tribe Marrakech booth and said hello to Elizabeth (Ocean wasn't around-probably at wrestling practice). I made the mistake of stopping at a drum booth and played one of the best sounding darbukas I’ve laid my hands on. I ran into Sadiq (of Kara Nomadica) while walking around. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to drum with him. I also ran into Al Qamar (that's Master Al-Q), maker of my AOA scroll which was used as the cover art for La Notte Dei Cavalieri. Teribus played three short sets in various places (hit it and quit it). We played a few tunes in front of a chair and sock vendor booth who gave us some socks (hmm...Red Hot Chili Peppers impressions, anyone? NOT! Maybe he wanted us to go away and hang ourselves with them?). The set in the food court was fun (free tomatoes - thanks, audience!). The autocrats stopped by to say hello (Diego & Doña) and invite us to play at a meeting at the on-site pub (the "Shattered Goat's Kneecap" or something like that). It was getting pretty cold (maybe it was all of the cheese and whine) and security (Rent-A-Norman) told me that they heard rumors of 20 mile and hour winds with hail (hell, I might just sail across the desert in my airship made of cacti!). We went to the car, grabbed the “quiet” (yeah, right) instruments, and made our way back to the booth that had the drum I want (drooled on). We played a bit of music with them until the wind kicked up (Dorothy and Toto went-a-flyin'). We jumped in our cars (crying like little girls) and drove to BJ’s (that's a restaurant) for food (pizza) and drinks (root beer for me, keg for Darth, wine for Nice Guy Eddie). Estrella is always a good time, even if your visit is short (like my attention span).

Post-Notes:
Drumming at Camp Darbuka is great! I had a wonderful time getting to play music with Elissa, Gary, Donovan, Sadiq, Sylvanus, Spike, and others. Some of the drummers were kind enough to humor Sadiq and I as we stretched things out quite a bit for some fun on the drums.
The new Estrella site was large with interesting berms and ditches big enough to swallow an elephant. The dust and wind proved interesting without biker goggles. 8D The stand with the home made root beer is always a great place to visit (coming from a root beer snob). The lights of the prison in the distance are like a beacon to wrong-doers who would try to evade the Tights Of Justice! (sorry, Tick moment) I bought the drum I drooled on at Estrella (and used some bartering power). It is named "Heeeeeeeyyyyy!" Teribus did play a set at the pub. We ran into some of our friends of the troupe Syren Dance Co./Nawari Tribe.

I probably won't be able to attend this year but hope to drag Teribus out next year and teach more drum classes.
