This Sunday at the Box: A Tribute to Sean Keily

It has been a year since the passing of our friend Sean "Gobo" Keily,
and the Box will be holding a small benefit this Sunday in his honor.

We will be starting the night off as early as we are allowed: 9pm, so
those of you who cannot normally make it out on Sunday nights can come
in for at least a quick visit.

There will be an altar with candles for you to light if you wish,
pictures of Sean, a book for his friends to write in (which we will be
giving to Sean's family). Suggested donation of $5 at the door - all
proceeds will go directly to Sean's family to help them pay for some
of the debt that remains, and hopefully help get him a tombstone.

We hope to see you there!

I, along copious lyrical collaborations with the Santa Cruz Goth/Industrial community
wrote a tongue in cheek and loving homage to our scene called
"Put On Your Stompy Boots". I'm finishing up the recordings of the instrumental tracks
and...........

This coming Sunday night, January 11th at STATIC at the BOX (at the Blue Lagoon on the Pacific Garden Mall
in downtown Santa Cruz) directly at MIDNIGHT I will be recording the final CHANTED CHORAL VOCALS
for this piece of music with anyone who wants to show up and be on the recording.

I'd love to encourage anyone who wants to , to come down and lend their vocals to this recording which we'll release
officially at the 10th Annversary of the BOX later this spring.

You just need to sing (or chant) lustfully and at the top of your lungs...........I'll conduct us all.............we'll do it
in five minutes and then drink copious quantities of alchohol and celebrate together.

These will be the microcephalic words that we'll record as a huge chorus.

The sounds will are heavier a little more old school, more Industrial. Think LED.s in blue, green.... alien electronic glow . The Decor....something like, HR Geiger, Alien, Species, and the likes. As always the show starts at 10 pm at the Seabright bar and Lounge. This time, the cover will be $5 at the door or $3 if you bring us a cool piece of broken electronics to be used for display/play time...:) The more interesting the better, I'm thinking computer guts, grinding gears, and things that one might find if they were walking through the "Event Horizon". This is your chance to really be a part of the event, make your own decor, and hellish suits. Extinction, should feel like a abandoned, angry, gutted spacecraft, left in the guts of Hell.

Help! Need a group to go to Burning Man with

I’m looking for a group around Santa Cruz that is going to Burning Man and is willing to open their camp to me and allow me to drive to it with them. I have never been to burning man before but always wanted to go. The problem is that my closest friends are computer hermits, married, or hate events like burning man so going with them is out of the question. Furthermore because I have not attended a burning man before I have absolutely no idea what to bring to it or how to prepare for it. I have not bought tickets yet because I have no idea if I will even be able to go however I have noticed that there are still plenty of them on ebay so I doubt that will be a problem.

If a group takes me in I can bring lots of booze and beer, enough to share with the entire group and perhaps some greenery if need be. I can even share driving duty there and back if they need me to.

SC goth / The Box Planning Meeting

Over the last month with Sean passing and The Box moving to Sundays there has been an increased amount of activity in the scgoth lists and forums both expressing optimism and concern regarding the club and the scene in general. People have suggested a meeting, so here we go. Everyone is invited, so please come and share your ideas.

When: Monday July 14th @ 7pm
Where: Cafe Pergolesi, 418 Cedar st. Santa Cruz
Attendees: Everyone who loves the scene and can make it

Agenda:
Short Q&A with Julian & Brynn regarding the current workings of the club.
Discuss ideas for The Box theme. Visual/Emotional feel for the club. To drive new promotions, decorations, website.
Discuss ideas to increase attendance and retention beyond the move to Sundays.
Discuss the scene in general, new events, activities, and gatherings that will promote the health of the scene.

That's probably all we can get through in one sitting. If this meeting is well attended and productive we can schedule another if it seems necessary.

REASONS behind the move of the BOX to Sunday nights

This is to address Manda's questions about
the movement of the Box to Sunday nights.

Hi Manda,

I wanted to reassure you that there is no conspiracy here
or even subtle undermining of the old regime.

There are some very good reasons why this has been done
and it was really greatly considered and debated before the
decision was made,
so I wanted to explain a few things about why the decision was made so
everyone can be on the same page, hopefully.

Firstly, NO!, this change has nothing to do with Sean's passing.
Nothing can replace Sean's presence in our scene. You can't imagine
how devastated we all are in the staff of the Box (and I only
include myself in that list because I moderate this list and the
SCGoth tribe list as well). Sean's life
and his contribution to this wonderful scene will always be
celebrated
and respected.

Secondly, everyone has observed that the entire Goth scene has been
declining in numbers in not only the entire bay area and Monterey
bay ararea but (as I can attest from touring in 8 countries in
northern europe and the british isles)also world wide.

The last fairly heavily goth themed club in San Francisco, Death
Guild (and yes, there are a few Industrial scenes)has always
conflicted with the Box on Monday nights.

Since the number of goth events weekly in the Bay Area has dwindled,
we realized (and credit goes here to Grey who really pushed all of
these things to all of us originally)that our own local scene was
losing 5-10 people a week to Death Guild. Knowing that several
people from the Bay Area have travelled to the Box each Monday night
we realized that we were also costing Death Guild a few potential
fans.

Death Guild is a bigger event than the Box so we thought that by
moving the Box to Sunday we could give everyone the option of having
two really good Goth party evenings a week that don't conflict with
each other.

Additionally, we realized that by moving the Box to Sunday nights
that 5-7 times a year that day (Sunday) would occur on a three day
weekend night, allowing revellers to party heavily without having
to
go into work the next day, sleepless and hungover.

This move means we can have three or four specially themed nights
that occur on weekend nights that could draw twice as many people as
the regular Monday night used to.

Additionally, to clarify the history of this move: we lobbied heavily for this and Freddie, the owner of the Blue Lagoon
and our 'boss', nominally, rejected the idea. Then suddenly , recently, he reversed his decision. Faced with
sharing one room with other styles of Monday on a continuing basis or trying to do something to revitalize the scene
(by a Sunday move) the DJs (led by Julian, who was officially given the leadership role by Sean before he passed)
opted to move to Sundays.

I think it's an excellent idea and I also think that the wonderful people who dedicate so much of their time to make this club possible
(all tithed energy to my understanding) can really use all of our support in this difficult transitional phase.

This decision was really kicked around and debated and it was
decided that for the good of the entire scene (both ours, the South
Bays and San Francisco)the club would be moved to Sunday nights.

We all hope that it's okay with everybody. Obviously, some people
will be aversely affected no matter what night the club is put on
and we all tried to be sensitive to that fact. I've talked with
several people who have not been able to make it because it has been
on a Monday night so hopefully, in the long run, attendance will
rise and our scene will grow again.

URGENT! SNAFU @ the Blue Lagoon tonight! Aaaaaarrrrrghhh!

It seems that the management at the Blue Lagoon has booked a set of bands on the "Black Room" side of the club tonight. Yes, tonight, which is our inaugural Sunday night. This is both irritating and confusing as we don't recall any mention of bands being booked tonight and would not have agreed to start having the Box on Sundays on a night that the whole club was not available to us.
Regardless, we will present the Box tonight on the "White Room" side only. DJs 7sins and Shadow Angel will be spinning goth club classics and your more recent favorites starting @ 10pm.

We, the staff of the Box, urge you to come out and show your support!

A poor showing tonight will only reinforce the impression that we are incapable of sustaining even a single room and make it harder for us to justify to the Blue Lagoon management that we have a viable scene in Santa Cruz. There will be opportunity to express your dissatisfaction with the situation in time. For now, please, come out and support the Box as we begin anew on Sunday nights.

The Box on Sundays!

As many of you may have heard, starting this Sunday, June 29th, The Box will be moving to Sunday nights!

Some of you might have mixed feelings about the move, mainly thats it's a break from tradition. This is going to be a good thing. We will no longer be in competition with Death Guild, several weeks out of the year the following Monday is a holiday which makes Sunday a weekend night, and it's generally more acceptable to be tired at work on a Monday than a Tuesday.

The timing is strange, with The Box moving to Sundays and Revenant losing it's spot at the Blue coinciding with Sean leaving us. We were told we were being moved the Monday before he passed, and Revenant the week before that. So in defense of Fred (who owns the Blue) who is shuffling things to make the most of the declining economy, these changes were not due to Sean's passing.

We had requested this move about six months ago, at the same time we took away our cover, so when we were given the choice between sharing the Club on Monday nights with a different set of normal DJs in the front room, the choice was clear. However, we will still have to share the night occasionally with off-genre touring band, but if we get the crowd large enough and they protest these bands loud enough we can probably get the Blue to reconsider.

This next month is going to be a period of adjustment for everyone, so we ask you all to bear with us through the transition. Nobody want's the SC goth scene to die, and this is a good opportunity to breath new life into it. We would love to hear ALL of your thoughts/suggestions about improving The Box.

Temple Art for Sean..

An artist from the burning man community has created a small art piece that is dedicated to Sean and will be presented to the temple at this year's festival. The intention is for people who knew Sean to write something on the piece as a memorial to him.

Saint Simon's Church - this will be a mass as well as a time for people to speak about Sean.

The church is located at the corner of Foothill and Grant in Los Altos

Sean's ashes will be placed at the Gates of Heaven Cemetery immediately following the mass (directions will be passed out at the mass and there will be a funeral procession).

A reception will be held at Serena's immediately following the cemetery service.

It is with an unbelievable heavy heart that we regretfully inform all of you that Sean passed away this morning (06-13-08). He had his family by his side and was in no pain. It is an understatement to say that Sean will be greatly missed.

At this time no funeral arrangements have been made. Once we have details on a service we will post them here and on the forums. Please do not contact the family at this time as they need time to sort things out.

!!NOTICE!! April 28th Ex-Voto show canceled

The Ex-Voto show scheduled for Monday April 28th has been canceled.
One of the band members had a family emergency and had to fly back to TX this morning. The Box and Ex-Voto apologize for the late notice, we were all looking forward to this show.

The Box will of course be happening, with the usual suspects assaulting (or caressing) your ears with the best electro, gothic, and ebm in the White Room, Power-noise, Industrial, and IDM in the Black Room.

Performing in Northern California for the first time since 1986!!

Ex-Voto formed in the 80’s and was one of the dominant Los Angeles Deathrock bands along with Screams for Tina, Christian Death, and a host of others. The band would later re-locate to New Orleans and their guitarist, Larry Rainwater, took over lead vocal duties.

The band has been featured on numerous gothic rock compilations over the years, as well as releasing three albums, Anno Domini, Light of Day, and Doloroso.

Monday, March 17th (for anyone who wants to avoid the drunken debauchery that is
St. Paddy's Day) sees the return of the Japanese Synth-Goth band, the ROYAL DEAD
and special guests nO thiNg (industrial middleeastern dance music) at
the BOX, at the Blue Lagoon on Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz.

The ROYAL DEAD are in the middle of their western states tour and have a new album out.
The last time they came saw the largest turnout in two years at the BOX.

They have a mixture of J-pop, synth goth, classical music and are very theatrical..........a lot of fun!!!!

Rick Walker's industrial middleeastern project, nO thiNg opens in a duet collaboration with
John Connel (guitar and keyboards). Rick will play distorto bass, keyboards, drums, industrial
metal percussion, strumstick, trumpet and traditional middleastern percussion.

They will be playing minimalistic, heavy beat driven tradiditional middleastern music.

taking a break from the box after next week.

(despite appearances on Tribe, this is unrelated to Mike's taking a break, but how's that for the appearances of double whammies?)

So I made it official last night with the other DJ's, I might as well announce it publicly - after next Monday, I will be taking a break from The Box.

I have a lot of reasons for this, but the major one is I'm already driving to Santa Cruz twice a week to be with my kids, driving down an additional night is not currently worth it for me. If others wanted to move things to Sunday when I'm already down in Santa Cruz dropping my kids off, I'd be all about it; I could go on about a lot of reasons why I think that would be better for the scene too, but in the end regardless of what may or may not be better for the scene, I need to do what I feel is better for me.

If you live in Santa Cruz, expect you'll still see me now and then and I plan to come down and guest on occasion. :)

If you live in the Bay Area, expect to see me around at Death Guild a lot more, BaGG too probably. Also expect to hear about events I'll be working on, or collaborating on. There's already a few in the pipes. I plan for my own things to start small and private, but if you're reading this it's likely you'll hear about it. :)

It's been a great tenure as a resident, and as I look back on the five clubs I helped out with while I was in Santa Cruz (I can't believe it's really been that many since I was pretty much dead to the scene until about two years ago, but if I stretch my memory back to 1996 helping Nako move her crates around I guess it really has been), The Box has definitely endured and been a place to develop more friendships than any other. Friends I plan to still see regularly. ;)

But believe me, while I haven't been able to offer people carpool rides back & forth to Santa Cruz in a while, I still expect to see you awesome people up here at shows!

Taking a break from... YOU(s)!

This is probably the most direct and to the point post I'll make. Right now, I feel completely emotionally drained. You know that comedy skit where the guy is, "I am a dot." Yea, that is me right now. I feel like the fucking dot on a piece of white 11x17 paper (because 8.5 x 11 wasn't enough to describe how empty I feel). Sure I still have my humor retained but, I'm way too emotionally drained. Really in a zombie state about things, and just doing stuff for the sake of doing stuff.

With that said, I'm trimming the fat with things that only exacerbate this problem. Folks, I'm going to be taking a hiatus from The Box, Deathguild, BaGG, Satori, Revenant, and etc. I'll still be making it out to the few events I have bought tickets for (as I still have a strong affection with music and will still support artists). At this point, I feel like completely alienated. You know those sci-fi movies that show the crazy fucked up compasses? Thats how I feel.

I need time to gather my thoughts -- or my life rather. A lot of options for change are before me on the table, and right now I need to focus on them.

Zooo.... I'm doing ok. Spirits are good. Shook the ward with a little NYE party in my room. Plenty of visitors right now, mostly family for now, but all of your warm wishes and vibes are coming through clear. I don't feel alone. Chemo starts tomorrow, so I will probably go quiet for a couple of weeks. After Chemo, more social visits to bring me back to the real world!

Where’s gobo? Finally the truth is revealed!

Cross-posted like crazy to catch all my friends.

I gotta’ say, deeply appreciate all the “I hope you’re getting well” and “we miss you, come back soon” notes I have received over the last few weeks. I am also honored (and sometimes amused) by the rumors and speculation that have been swirling around my absence. Thank you my friends for thinking of me.

So here’s the skinny...

At first, I had a nasty cold and was staying home to speed my recovery so that I could get back to the party full force. But the cold lingered on and on. So after about 6 weeks, I went to the doctor to find out what was up. I’d love to use a little humor to share the results with ya’ll, but its easier to just come out with it. The doctor tells me that I’ve come down with a touch of the Leukemia. I go to Stanford tomorrow to start treatment. I’m told that my condition is very treatable and a little research tells me that my specialist at Stanford is nationally recognized as one of the very best. Those of you that know me well know that I am in the habit of fighting hard with wit and guile for what I want. This situation is no different. My feelings toward this whole thing are confused, of course. At the same time, the better part of me is feeling very positive. I have been preparing myself for a big change for some time (I just thought I’d be moving to go to school.) My mind and spirit are very flexible right now. I know how strong I am. If something like this has to happen to me, this is the time for it.

But can the clubs run without Gobo in charge of everything? Hell yeah!!! :-) I didn’t start this scene, and I didn’t start The Box. The club passes from leader to new leader and survives every time. I can tell you a bit about where things in club land are going. As I said before, I have been planning to leave town for a while. We at The Box have spent the last year actively preparing for this time of change. (My cohort’s training has been exceptional and rigorous, if I may indulge my ego for just a moment ;-) Julian, Disconnect, Syndael, Stiletto, and Grey are absolutely prepared to take The Box over, keep it going, and continue the improvements you’ve all enjoyed. So fear not. I hear that it’s been pretty strong down there last few weeks, and I expect it will still be when I come for my next visit.

Unfortunately, January’s FATE is canceled. I really wanted to have a final show, but it’s just not possible this month. I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the party. I have! I DO intend to recover, so I DO have some future plans for FATE. They’re just on hold for now.

Being the clubin’ pirate that I am, you know I have something up my sleeve no matter what the circumstances. Keep your eyes open for the pay Gobo’s bills benefit show. Coming Soon!

AND, OPENING FEBRUARY 1st 2008, the First Friday in February… something insidiously sinister and new at THE BLUE LAGOON… details to be announced soon. So, SC’s Friday night goth club tradition will continue after all? Of course it will. Hooray!

So, that’s the news for now. I’ll keep you all informed as new things happen. I’ll be letting everyone know where their hiding me because visitors rock! (hint hint ;-) And please, do not forget to support the clubs!

I'll publish the best ways to contact me as soon as I figure them out. More as it happens and see you all as soon a possible!

The BEST of TIMES

I was really gratified going to the Box on Monday evening.

A lot of former patrons of the club came out, the music was fabulous
(Sean, in particular, played a stellar old school set) and I turned to
Emily whilst dancing and said, "wow, this feels like the good old days, here"

It was nice to see people out. Considering that FATE and the 2nd Anniversary of Satori
had just occurred on Friday and Saturday nights before it meant the turnout was really excellent.

I don't know if it's what happened at the end of FATE with all the purse thefts but it seemed like it was part of the vibe.
At least a couple of people told me they came out in support of the club.

The WORST of TIMES

At the same time as I had a great time at the BOX,

I have to admit being a little mystified by the almost complete lack
of response to my suggestion to take up a fund for the few women who were really
hurt badly by the theft of their valuables.

I had one person offer to give money to a fund to help them out from our scene and,
impressively, the offer of a donation from an old schooler who doesn't even live here any more.

Other than that, it's just me and two other people (none of whom makes very much money).

I'm curious: What's the sentiment:

1) Fuck it, the women were naive and deserved what they got consequently?

2) Are people still considering donating but just haven't gotten around to it?

3) People are feeling to strapped to help out in such a situation?

4) people just aren't reading the SCGoth yahoo groups and the SCGoth Tribe postings?

5) obviously, many other factors I haven't thought of?

I agree with Robin, that without specific agreements ahead of time that the Blue Lagoon is not financially responsible for the losses,
but this is more about having a little empathy for our sisters who were ripped off.

Please enlighten me if you care to take the time. I appeal again to your generosity and your feelings of solidarity.

stolen cd's

FYI, I had my car broken into last night and two 60CD case logic cases stolen (among other things) so I'm down to 1/3rd of my CD's that I tend to DJ with - I've got the other thousand some odd CD's in storage at the moment - so if I seem to be leaning really heavy into some bands and not others for the next little while, that's why.
