Well, Marcos and I have decided to retire from the group. We've had some good fun, but it's a been a lot of work and the time has come for us to do something new... we're still friends with the group but are just moving on.

Anyway, check out some video of us last month in London, England, which has become an "internet phenomenon" (I'm the one who waves to the camera) http://www.trafficwardensneedlove.com/

Yes, your favourite world-groove horn and drum band based in East Van has just returned from shows and festivals in Germany, the Basque Country (Spain), France, and England.

Tomorrow, Saturday July 7th, we play our first show back in Canada at the Fairview Pub, 898 W. Broadway. The date is 7/7/7, so cover is only $7. Come and help support us- we made this trip happen all by ourselves without any grants, rich sugardaddies, or sports drink endorsements.

The Carnival Band won the People's Choice Award at the battle of carnival bands in Hamburg, Germany, performed on a mountain on the solstice in the Basque Country just before an ancient pagan fire-jumping ceremony, and paraded after a number of unsuspecting traffic wardens in London, England ("What. Is. The. Name of. Your group?!" "Traffic Wardens Need Love!")

Opening July 7th are Blackberry Wood, the super-fun rag-time band with a hip-hop backbone.
http://www.myspace.com/blackberrywood

A plethora of pictures up soon, once we get our land-legs back.

hi carnivalia.
thanks for your tunes and fun energy.

several east van pedal bike burlesque dancers will be doing their moves in front of video cameras next sunday afternoon as part of a no budget video that the margaret charles art bike collective mc3 kids and i are putting together. we need one or more musicians -- a musical director in fact [conquor the world with us!!!] because we really cant steal music for the video.

the video is spoken word numbers at 110 beats per minute and i think its ok to hold the bike dances that go between the three poems to this pace. a keyboard, bass or sax or other festive instrumentations would work wonderfully with what we are doing.

we can only offer a modest honorarium. it will be the afternoon and early evening of january 28th.

We're looking to build a perminent section of dancers and flag bearers (or jugglers or poi spinners). You'd be a part of the group, but instead of playing music you'd bring good vibes.

Honk! Fest in Massachusetts was inspiring, because various groups had their performers, dancers, and vibe-adding friends travelling with them to be part of the show (some from as far as California)- check out pictures of us and all the others bands and performers at http://www.flickr.com/groups/honk2006/pool/
Friday July 28th: July Critical Mass (and afterparty at the Anza)

The Carnival Band will play for the beginning of the July Critical Mass, a monthly grassroots reclamation of public space held the last Friday of every month at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

You are invited to enjoy the safety and comfort in the car-free space created by simply riding together! Bicycles, skateboards, rollerskates, self propelled couches, and any other form of human powered locomotion are all welcomed! The last ride, in June 2006, was estimated to include over 1800 bicyclists.

Gather fiveish, leave sixish, on the fountain side of the Art Gallery.

Later that evening, come to the VeloFusion Bike Party, from 8pm - 1:30 at the Anza Club (3 8th Avenue West). It's a celebration of Vancouver's vibrant bicycle culture with dancing, bands, DJ's, movies, bike art and much more dancing.

The Carnival Band plays around 10pm. Other performers include Timothy Wisdom ( http://people.tribe.net/timothywisdom ) (Dj), Ruggedly Handsome (Dj), Ifny (MC), DAXXX (Performer), and Ian Patterson and Jim Hoehnle (Bicycle light sculpture).

It is $3 if you come in a costume (any costume, go nuts, go wild, be as creative as you like) and $5 otherwise.

Honk! Festival in Boston

This fall, we've been invited to play the Honk! Festival in Boston, Massachesetts this October. The confirmed line-up for the festival so far includes the Hungry March Band and the Rude Mechanical Orchestra from New York, the March Fourth Marching Band of Portland, OR, the What Cheer? Brigade from Providence, RI, the Stick & Rag Village Orchestra of Boston, and the Revolutionary Snake Ensemble and Second Line Social Aid & Pleasure Society Brass Band (the group hosting the event) from Cambridge.

http://www.honkfest.org/

Festival Goals and Rationale:

Around the country and around the world, a new type of street band is emerging. Borrowing repertoire and inspiration from a diverse set of folk music traditions New Orleans second line brass bands, European Klezmer, Balkan and Gypsy music, Brazilian Afro Bloc and Frevo traditions, as well as the passion and spirit of Mardi Gras and Carnivale these "honkers" all share a commitment to several core principles. Metaphorically speaking, they honk their horns for the same reasons motorists honk theirs: to arouse fellow travelers, to warn of danger, to celebrate milestones, and to just plain have fun.

First and foremost, they honk their horns or beat their drums, or wave their flags to enliven and embolden (rather than impress or mollify) their audience. Their members vary widely in age, ethnicity, class and background, and although they often wear some kind of uniform, there is also always an emphasis on individuality and difference, as well as a "DIY" (do-it-yourself) sensibility to their instrumentation and attire. Acoustic and mobile, these bands play familiar music that is by, for, and of "the people." Members of the audience often think "Hey, I could do that!" and, indeed, these bands recruit new members right off the street.

Just as important, they honk their horns because its the best way they know to protest a world of violence and oppression. All of these bands are less than a decade old, born in reaction to the fatalism and indifference that has gripped the advanced industrialized democracies in the face of a political crisis of legitimacy, ongoing economic recession and dislocation, and impending ecological disaster. In response, honkers have been providing a heartfelt musical antidote, a soundtrack for antiwar rallies, political mobilizations and joyous reclamations of public space. The honkers purpose is to mock (rather than directly challenge) corporate and statist injustice, with a musical offering that is subversive without being militant.

As often as they honk in protest, however, they also perform to celebrate the causes and institutions they support: multicultural parades and street festivals, peace conferences and social forums, artist collectives and community gardens, block parties, relief benefits and homeless shelters. In these cases, as in every case, the honkers ultimate goal is to have fun, to relish the art of making fun as a form of individual and collective transcendence, and to encourage others to see and do the same.

A "HONK Festival" offers a unique opportunity for participants to compare notes, publicize the values and goals of the Honk movement, and play all day for a diverse, sophisticated and open-minded audience.

Mountain Mardi Gras

This Friday, The Carnival Band is performing at Public Dreams' Mountain Mardi Gras in Capilano River Regional Park around 6:30pm (though the event itself is from 3-8).

Tickets are $5.00 for General Admission, $2.00 for Youth under 12, and free for Children under 5.

"Mountain Mardi Gras is a new event created by Public Dreams Society and their partner the North Vancouver Community Arts Council, that slips across boundaries. It cultivates the ancient and the modern impulses for masquerading and community celebrations. It is a summons to the good people of the West Coast Rain Forest to gather in the splendour of the North Shore mountains and jump into the ring of international carnival culture.

"We will celebrate the land, its creatures and ourselves. At Mountain Mardi Gras, Raven will be our host. Other attendees will be the mischievous animal tricksters, Monkey King and Anansi Spider, with Brer Rabbit from New Orleans Mardi Gras as our guest of honour. Tricksters cunningly remind us of our greatness and our foibles.

"When night falls, carnival music bands will lead mardi gras guests in a procession across the mighty Cleveland Dam. Revellors will enter the final event of the night and dance the worldly rhythms of Beats Without Borders.

"Costumes Encouraged. Dress for the Elements. Bring a Cup for Cocoa. Be Prepared to Play."

There will be no public parking available at Capilano River Regional Park except for vehicles that require wheelchair access. However, Capilano River Regional Park, located on Capilano Road is easily accessible by public transit, and a free Park and Ride Shuttle Service will be provided from the Park Royal, Lynn Valley and Capilano shopping centres.

Tomorrow evening we playing at the opening night of the 5th Annual Travelling World Community Film Festival at Langara College (100 W. 49th). We play at 7:30, just before Favela Rising begins.

FAVELA RISING documents a man and a movement, a city divided and a favela (Brazilian squatter settlement) united. Haunted by the murders of his family and many of his friends, Anderson Sá is a former drug-trafficker who turns social revolutionary in Rio de Janeiro's most feared slum. Through hip-hop music, the rhythms of the street, and Afro-Brazilian dance he rallies his community to counteract the violent oppression enforced by teenage drug armies and sustained by corrupt police.

At the dawn of liberation, just as collective mobility is overcoming all odds and Anderson's grassroots Afro Reggae movement is at the height of its success, a tragic accident threatens to silence the movement forever.

FESTIVAL OPENER ON OSCAR SHORTLIST: Favela Rising is one of 15 films on the shortlist for an Academy Award in the category of Best Documentary Feature. Eighty-two films had been eligible in the category. The nominated films will be announced along with nominations in 24 other categories for the 78th Academy Awards on Tuesday, January 31, at 5:30 a.m. PST.

Favela Rising has won a number of awards including The International Documentary Association Film of the Year and Best Emerging Documentary Filmmaker at the Tribeca Film Festival.
