Oh, Lord. They are disruptive to my yard. They tear up the ground, eat my plants and make me cuss out loud. Flushing the bastards with water doesn't make them go away. Trust me, they don't go away!

They should cover up the holes at least. People DO get hurt on them!
    • Thank you for offering. I look forward to 1,000,000 covered goofer holes at LIB this year. You might wanna head up there a few days early.
      • i posted this question because i feel the holes pose a challenge to some of our community, in particular those with dis-abilities.

i heard that some poor fellow broke his leg last year while tripping when his foot entered an unseen hole. hopefully he has fully recovered and will return this year. let's hope it dosen't happen again.

it seems that some judicious filling, if allowed, would benefit everybody.
        • Erm ....... that was me.
          • we are considering filling large holes, but does anyone know what the real impact to the gophers will be? Paynie is cute, but gophers are more cute so we're taking them into consideration.
            • em. i know.

i'll call the museum of natural history here in town tomorrow.
              • The gophers out there are too fat and need more exercise. I say fill in their holes so they can get some exercise digging themselves back out. We filled up one on the road in front of our camp, since obviously that gopher wasn't too smart and we probably saved his life by making him move to a safer location. There are hundreds of thousands of un-camped in areas outside of the Live Oak Campground where the gophers can relocate. Are gophers so endangered that we need to sacrifice our safety to preserve and protect them?

On a more serious note, after Paynie broke his leg last year I was more concerned about a couple of serious stumbles we all took while stepping in one of the thousands of gopher holes in the dark last year. All it takes is a wrong step to ruin a weekend and probably a month or two as well (also, since I have health insurance with a high deductible it would probably ruin my Burning Man plans).
        • "i heard that some poor fellow broke his leg last year while tripping when his foot entered an unseen hole"

LOL. From now on that's what I'm calling Paynie: Some Poor Fellow. SPF for short.

Please note, that the rest of us managed to survive with all of our femurs intact. The year before Shena (aka some poor girl) broke her neck riding around on a golf cart with Y2. Ever since there have been absolutely no broken necks due to Y2's wacky racing or anything else.

Just watch where you plant your feet people. You can twist your ankle on a perfectly level, perfectly paved sidewalk. People actually die at Disneyland every year. I remember when LIB was in the middle of a freakin desert with snakes and scorpions and goop and you had to poop behind a bush over by the dry river bed.

... and if Y2 offers you a ride, hold on tightly.

Maybe we should consider doing something about all the foreign photographers. After all, the gophers are natives.
          • well first, the holes in question are a combination of gopher and ground squirrel.

i have it from The County Parks and Recreation that filling the holes with dirt is not a problem. we don't want to use any rocks or plastics(obviously). just scrape a little of the surrounding dirt to fill 'em in a bit. i'd highly suggest doing this around your camp. maybe some of us will keep our eyes out for big 'uns around the site.

besides, i bet all those rodents are preparing a big underground dance hall and can't wait for the music to start.

            i know i can't.
