Belly Dance Spring 2009: 20 Years of Freeing Your Belly

Unbutton your pants. Right now. I mean it! Can’t you hear your belly yearning to be free? I can! I have dreams of us all embracing our core body with joy. I have visions of us all breathing deep belly breaths as we sink into the delirious wonder of being alive. Come on, you can spare a moment or two, can’t you? Put your hands on your free belly. Relax those muscles. Roll your shoulders and sit back. Inhale, exhale. Inhale, exhale. See? It’s just like walking really; you’re a natural at it!! Let the juices of springtime inspire you to free your belly. Right now, I mean it!

We’ve been around for 20 years, and although we’ve been the first to do many things in our little corner of the belly dance community, we remain close to the earth, well, hidden in there, actually. Our mission is to be there for you, and to do that we need to stay grounded. Sometimes that means we devote time to listening rather than performing, creating rather than expanding. But we’re still here. We want you to know – you are ready and you can do it. We see it every day in our classes. We’ve seen it for 20 years. You are powerful and you can do it.

Direct Discoveries
We’ve pumped spring into our classes! We are offering all 3 levels in addition to our work for the BU dance department. We are offering discounts and barter situations. We are also offering spots in our June 27th showcase which means the whole month of June is a series of free classes to learn a fun, new choreography. Discover yourself this spring. Join a belly dance class!

Petula Clark
It’s a Sign of the Times…there are no borders! If you are not in the US, think about ordering our dvd through Amazon. It is a foundation course that will give you core movements and inspire you to add your own personality to the movements. It will help you free your belly, we promise.

Come One, Come All
To the greatest performance this spring! Our 2009 show celebrates 20 years of choreography. This year our newest piece celebrates the ancient wisdom of the trees. In our new performance space at Boston University you’ll be surrounded by art, music, and movement that will transport you beyond bounds of Boston. June 27th, 8pm, student and senior discounts.

LOCAL Teacher Training
Our training is the only one in the area and gives you a good foundation for developing your own belly dance class. Along with going over the foundation movements of belly dance (our curriculum known as the “Sacred Shapes” of belly dance), we cover the fundamentals of the pace and shape of a successful class. We believe belly dance is a potent, powerful force in the world and we are happy to help others spread the word by learning to create a supportive learning environment for students. The training is open to inexperienced dancers as well as experienced ones. The course involves reading selected text, observing our classes while meeting and communicating with a mentor, learning the Sacred Shapes, and culminates with an 8 week student teaching practicum in our Beginner’s class. You know what to do if you’re interested. We’re just a click away…

Belly Dance Fall 2008: Do it Different

It’s hard to change through love. It’s so much easier to get angry and make change happen. Or to keep hitting the same wall till the choice is change or die. Or to stand still, doing nothing, praying for change…and in the end does it ever come unless we bring it? It’s hard to change because you love yourself. It’s such a powerful thought; I want to say it again. Change because you love yourself. Whew! It’s liberating, really. Change not because of pain, anger, or fear, but because of love. How liberating is that? I didn’t say it would be easy, but you’re not opposed to a little hard work are you? You, who fights for the correct medication, doctors, second opinions? You, who commutes, navigates job evaluations, managers, and coworkers? You, who shops, cooks, cleans, manages a household? You, who parents tirelessly and endlessly? You, who lives online, goes wireless, and can be reached by phone at any time? You, who collects ideas about money and retirement, and plans for the future? You. You can do it. Step up to the mirror right now. Look yourself in the eye and say “I love you.” I can feel the changes happening, can’t you?

For us, belly dance is all about changing through loving yourself. We promise you’ll see yourself change into a belly dancer through love. It’s what we do. We’ve worked hard at it for nearly 20 years and we do it for you. Why belly dance? Well, sometimes it still mystifies even us – belly dance is connected, it is deeply connected to our female bodies. We provide the space to love yourself and the encouragement to do so, the dance does the rest.

Ch-Ch-Changes…
It’s time for TGD to transform once again. Our dear Cathy leaves us to teach her own classes in Belly Dance for Pregnancy and Birth. She has contributed so much to TGD and she’ll be missed. Look for links to her events on our website. Or check out her web page: http://www.inthebellyofthegoddess.com/ Blessed be, Cathy!

More Classes, More Places
We return to Boston University to teach three dance classes this semester. Two Beginner and one Advanced Beginner. These classes are open to the public, so don’t be shy! Karen continues with the Chelsea studio teaching young girls, and at our Cambridge studio we have two classes Beginner and Advanced Beginner. Here is all the info you’ll need: http://www.thegoddessdancing.com/class_schedule.htm

Weekend Classes
We’ve been asked for a long time to hold classes during the day on the weekends because evenings can be hard for some. So, we have two classes on the weekends. Check it out at: http://www.bu.edu/fitrec/programs/dance/dflexd.shtml

Your Turn
Our Teacher Training program is as popular as ever. Local slots fill up fast so send us an email if you’d like to enroll. We lead you through learning our Beginner program, and then support you while you practice teaching bellydance right in our studios. We’ll stick with you till you feel confident to do it on your own! http://www.thegoddessdancing.com/teacher_training.htm

Don’t miss the ‘new look’ to our website!

Belly Dance Winter 2008: Where Am I?

It’s never like they say it will be. I arrive and think, hmm, this isn’t how it’s supposed to be. Somehow I trusted in something that never existed. Somehow, I believed the hype. Oh, dear. Has this ever happened to you? Like when they said get a college degree it will make your salary higher. Would that be before or after my monthly school loan payments? Or, put your money in funds it will double in 10 years. Which 10 years would that be? Or, travel after you’ve made a career. Or, life is training enough to be a parent. Or, well, you get the picture. And when you land in the realization that this is not what you wanted…well, at least you’ve got your body – a refuge of reality, the feelings and sensations and urges and pleasures that throb with the surety that you are alive, now.

Belly dance has its own hype. All sorts of spin cloud what is really at the core of all the belly dance hype. At its core belly dance is about your relationship with your body. It sounds simple. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn’t. But, if you start from there…well, even if you never leave at least you’ll be in your body, your own refuge of reality, gazing out on all the hype!

Come Hither
With the swing of our orbit bringing us the return to longer days, we’ve rejuvenated ourselves with new music, new moves, and new motivation. Our classes begin the week of January 21st and we are proud to offer SEVEN of them! We have three Beginner classes, one at our studio in Central Sq and two for the BU Dance Department. We have an Advanced Beginner class and an Intermediate class at our studio, and a new Intermediate class for BU. Whew! But, that’s not all! Our Belly Dance for Pregnancy and Birth class has been so popular that we have added it as a permanent class! How can we say ‘no’ to you amazing women?http://www.thegoddessdancing.com/class_schedule.htm

My Sweet
News around TGD is all about adding that special ingredient to what we do. We think and plan and plot and outline and discuss and plan again. And each time we add a little hope…the hope that we get to see you chuckle at how pleasant it is to be in your body. So, we wait for you to join us. And if you cannot, we made a dvd so we could come to you. See a clip.http://www.thegoddessdancing.com/video_clip_TSS.htm

And Dance
We are thrilled to have a new venue for our Annual Showcase. We’ll be at BU’s Dance Theater on the evening of June 27th and 28th. Since many performers return just to dance in the show, it’s always a fun gathering. And we feel fortunate to have dancers willing to commit to such a big show! Each dance is crafted with the audience in mind. How will they feel? Do they see the story in the movements? What will speak to them the most? This year our troupe choreography honors those sentinels who have kept their watching silence since the beginning…the trees…http://fitrec.bu.edu/programs/dance/dancetheater.asp

With Me
Our Teacher Training program seems to have been just what you were looking for! And, we’re so glad! Our local spots fill up quickly, so please contact us if you know you’d like to join us. Our correspondence course is in the works and if you would like to be on our list make sure we get your info!!

Belly Dance Fall 2007: I Think Therefore I Am

"Your body hears everything you think.” (www.bodypositive.com). It’s a powerful idea. Those crazy thoughts running around your mind willy nilly have an affect whether you want them to or not. While you’re talking to a friend you think, “wonder if she ever considered braces?”, or you are with a co-worker and think, “that shirt is too small,” or you are with your family and think, “am I related to these people?”. Or perhaps your thoughts run unrelated to where you are in the moment and circle around and around about things you have to do, things you want to do, or things you’ll never do again. All of your thoughts have power. Wouldn’t it be nice to use that power for good? Think a positive thought about your body right now. Try, “I have cute toes.” Or, “My bladder is healthy.” Or, “My heart pumps with a joyous rhythm.” And for those days when your thoughts circle around and around, try adding, “All is well” so you can hear that over and over and over.

Belly dance has a funny way of taking over your mind. Suddenly you find yourself thinking “my, what nice big hips you have”, or “look how far out you can roll your belly”, or “my shaking flesh doesn’t look half bad”. If you haven’t already, give it a try. It will change the way you think.

Extra! Extra! Read All About It
We’ve been in the news lately. Our vision of belly dance as a tool to use for pregnancy and labor is bubbling into the mainstream. Check out Cathy’s interview on the front page of the Wall Street Journal http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB118618710665287942-lMyQjAxMDE3ODA2NTEwODU3Wj.html Of course we’re not the only ones with this vision. So, please check out our website to get the whole scoop http://www.thegoddessdancing.com/belly_dance_and_birth.htm.

Good Hearts
If you live far away from us or can’t find a class in your area, try our dvd. We designed it for women like you! Our instructional dvd is available on Amazon. Search under The Goddess Dancing and there we are! We hope you enjoy reading the reviews of our dvd just as much as we did. After all, we do have “good hearts”.

On the Red Line
This fall we are busy with SEVEN classes! Whew! Our studio in Central Sq has four of them. On Mondays, Advanced Beginner at 6:30 and Intermediate at 7:45. On Tuesdays, Beginner at 7:45. And on Thursdays, our Pregnancy and Birth class at 7:45. See the schedule on our website: http://www.thegoddessdancing.com/classes_about.htm highlight “Classes” on the menu bar to find the schedule.

New Class
One of our new classes at Central Sq is the BD for Pregnancy and Birth series. If you are looking for exercise while you are pregnant, want to learn about movements for pregnancy, want to get pregnant, or want to learn the origins of this ancient dance while learning the basic moves, this is the class for you! http://www.thegoddessdancing.com/belly_dance_and_birth.htm

TwoTwo
Boston University has hired us once again to teach for their dance department. We have two classes there this fall on Wed and Sat. It books up fast! http://fitrec.bu.edu/programs/dance/dflexd.asp

And One for You
Karen is once again teaching in her hometown of Chelsea! She is running classes for young girls for Genevieve’s Dance Studio on Wed. http://boston.citysearch.com/profile/4756658/?brand=smx_yp-nc.

To Boldly Go…
Lastly, if you are in the area, we invite you to join us for BOLD, the Birth on Labor Day event September, 29th. It is an amazing event that we are very proud to be involved in. We will be performing our Mother Birth dance at the event. http://www.thegoddessdancing.com/motherbirth.htm. Check out their website at: http://www.birthonlaborday.com/announce.html.

Your body talks to you. It gives you signals and signs and waits for you to follow. It sends you reminders like recorded messages on your answering machine. “BEEP -Your mouth is now dry – this means you have waited to long to drink water and are dehydrated” or “BEEP –Feel that gas? Right, that’s from the ice cream that you know disagrees with you, have a nice night” or “BEEP -This is a courtesy call from your leg-interest on that cramp will increase due to lack of stretching.” If we could just get it to tell us something good, we might listen more, right? What do you do to change your messages...ac
