How were the showers last year? A friend of mine had an RV last year so I had the gift of luxury and privacy. Next year may be different. Were the facilities? Were they pretty clean? I was thinking about bringing my own camp shower, but I’m debating on rather my ingenious plan for set up and drainage would be worth all that effort when I could simply walk a few steps to the ones already provided.
What say you?

Re: Showers…..
Sat, September 8, 2007 - 7:28 PMI envy you having access to a RV with a shower.
Definitely bring your own camp shower if you can.
The showers in the trailer at GulfWar are nasty and the ones by the cabins arent much better.
I havent been to the new shower house by the period-life encampment.
The shower trailer shouldve been replaced years ago, the only thing that can fix it now is a good bonfire...
Seriously. -

Re: Showers…..
Sat, September 8, 2007 - 7:51 PMThe one down by the period-life is pretty nice..though it's hard to find a time when its got hot (or even warm) water.
Even though the trailer was nasty..it usually had warm water so I used it more often. -
-
Re: Showers…..
Sat, September 8, 2007 - 8:46 PMit has plenty of warm water for roughly 5-10min at a time & between the hours of 2-5am. I do believe there is an hour of that time used for clean up though. But I agree with Sven... a bonfire would help it greatly.
Avoid going in there barefoot also, always have shower shoes. -

Re: Showers…..
Sun, September 9, 2007 - 12:47 PMI think the ladies showers are a bit cleaner than the men's showers, but definitely wear shower shoes. Bonfires are good...:) -

Re: Showers…..
Sun, September 9, 2007 - 6:47 PMThe showers are <understatement> BAD</understatement>.
I have to seriously psyche myself up to use them...but I'm spoiled at home with a wonderful walk-in shower that will fit 3 people (don't ask!) and has jets.
However, the restrictions for showers at Gulf Wars are very different from the ones at Pennsic so read the fine print! -

Can you point me to the fine print?
Cause if I take the rv we need to think about drainage....it's got an inside shower (goes to tank)
and an outside shower (goes to ground) plus i have a 1 hookup zodi (instant show heater like the one Robert got but smaller)
So we will need to plan to meet the rules.

Re: Showers…..
Sun, September 16, 2007 - 7:55 PMI know you have to have a resivoir tank on the supply side, (ie. you cant run directly off the faucet pressure)... something about the resultant pressure drop... So we'll either have to have a gravity system (like the showers at RavensFort) or use a small submersible pump.
Not sure about the waste water... if we have to catch that too, or can we run it off into the ravine?
Robert? -

Re: Showers…..
Mon, September 17, 2007 - 6:45 AMHere is the link to the rules for Gulf Wars, and the copied text for the rules. It's exactly as Sven says, got to have a reservoir system.
Showers
If you plan to bring your own shower, it MUST operate with a water reservoir system and proper drainage. Otherwise, we cannot accommodate the water pressure needs. If you erect a shower that does not operate with a reservoir system, you will be instructed to take it down. Failure to do so may result in eviction from site.

It doesn't say a thing about drainage which is odd. But I'm sure you'd want to follow the rules for Pennsic on that, which is to at least dig a small drain away trench.
Since Rhoadd camps next to the ravine, and the ground there is mostly clay after a certain level, we just dug a small trench down in to the ravine. The ground abosorbed it pretty well.
Next year we'll need to see about getting a good size resevoir. I was told, though I never tried it, that you can hook up a water hose to fill your reservoir as long as you unhooked it once you were filled. So taking a good size barrel would be one idea. But you'll need a good size submersible pump to get the water moving well enough through the heater. I haven't tried the battery operated one with the Zodi, but I'm not convinced that it would be strong enough to push that water yet. But since there isn't electricity there you're kinda stuck with using battery operated pumps. Unless you wanted to get real fancy and set up a small cycle battery, use an inverter and plug in the pump that way. But... water, electricty and propane sound like a mixture for bad mojo to me. -

Re: Showers…..
Mon, September 17, 2007 - 6:46 AMHere is what they say about hoses, access to water faucets and drainage;
Water and Electricity
Faucet are located on the fighting field, behind the cabins, and along several of the roads.
Do not block access to the faucets or electric outlets. Everyone must be able to use these, even if they are in your encampment.
You must provide a “y” connector so that others may use the utilities.
Water hoses and electrical cords should be dug in at least 1 inch of ground cover. (Failure to comply with using a “y” connector or burying your hoses and cords may result in confiscation of the said property.)
Water disposal: Pour away from tents and encampments

I wish I could say. I made a home in that lousy Hotel. I hate that Hotel. To me, it is nothing but a Brick Tent. -

Re: Showers…..
Fri, October 19, 2007 - 7:45 PMI can only attest to the shower trailer over by the new tavern, and last year they were just as bad as every year before - lousy, lousy, lousy...

Re: Showers…..
Sun, October 21, 2007 - 4:33 PMWe've been trailer trash (rv types) at GW for many years. We have never had to worry about drainage w/2 people showering every day. We've not looked into actually digging a sump as at Pennsic. The state of MS rest areas usually have dump stations for RV's so we use them after events when travelling thru MS
There is usually an "rv-crat" at every war and they are very good about answering questions. Watch the GW webpage for them

Re: Showers…..
Mon, October 22, 2007 - 1:32 PMwhoa, I'm not by any means reccomending Rving at SCA events.
We do it because we simply could not afford a truck to take our merchant booth. The RV we have sorta "fell out of the sky" on a deal we could not pass up. The large RV we have now is the result of even MORE merchant related crud.
While rving HAS it's advantages, it has one HUGE problem....the camping sucks. Sure you have a dry bed, an easy camp to set up and perhaps other cool stuff (depending on how your RV is eqippped) but what you don't have is a real camp where people can wander in and add to the experience.
RVing can (and does) insulate you FROM the war. Ours is hardly small, but it still does not seat what an average campfire will. IF you cook inside, it's even worse, as few will hang out with you in a hot camper kitchen. Rv sections at most wars are out of the way and most RV'ers go to their camp, jump in, and dissapear. There's just not a sense of community in the Rv sections that you find in any emcampment or even in a cabin.
Freda and I have stopped using the RV for local events unless it's necessary. We have found that without the RV, we see, meet, and get to interact with people far more.
So. why the RV?
On the road, for long drives (we do 3 drives that are over 1k miles and 1 that's over 2k) an Rv is hard to beat. The absense of hotel and resturant bills easily pay the differance in gas bills between the Rv and a car. The Rv also lets us stop when and where we want in comfort.
So, for long trips, families w/kids or perhaps those with physical issues, and RV can make SCA play easier on the mind and body. But for me, unless I have to, I'll drive something else and set up a camp to share with others.
