I just got back from my first hooping performance. My high school is doing this thing called 'Siegel Idol' which is just a talent show competition. The preliminaries were tonight, and the finals are tomorrow. I made it into the finals! Everyone was freaking out when I performed. They even had these cool light effects while I was on stage. The move they seemed to like the most were my continuous beam-me-ups. It was so much fun! I was soooo nervous before I went on and I could hardly breathe but once the music started I just went into it and freestyled the dance. I started out the routine with an isolation then laid down for some foot hooping. I'll post the video of the final performance on youtube. I hope I can get it as video of the day for hooping.org, but that's just a dream. During intermission and after the show was over, so many people came up to me and talked about how amazing it was. I was blushing the whole time. I feel so awesome right now. I'm so excited about tomorrow! I love hooping!!

Thu, March 20, 2008 - 4:24 AMSounds like you had a real blast! Good luck for the finals and we await the video with anticipation.
You see, we all think there is always so much to learn. But actually people who can't hoop don't know about the moves we can't do and they are invariably impressed by everything we can do. It's a great thing to be able to do at the moment because it's still quite unknown and so we get the benefit of surprising people.

Re: I did my first performance!
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 12:26 PMyeah it was interesting how it took me pretty much 3 months of vigorous practicing every week to finally learn how to shoulder hoop (barely!). The beam-me-up took about a day and a half to get perfect. People freaked out over the beam-me-ups but nothing when I shoulder hooped. It was just interesting and it made me smile to think how much work went into some moves and how little effort into others. I think one of the biggest responses is "oh I could never ever do that", and it's exhaustingly difficult to convince them otherwise. I want to share the joy of hooping to everyone, but they have to get past that barrier of impossibility. -

Re: I did my first performance!
Thu, March 20, 2008 - 2:18 PMthat is funny...I think shoulder hooping looks easier than it is (as we all know...sheesh)...but Beam Me Ups just look so crazy and you can't tell what the person is doing...
I am so excited for you...how cool...looking forward to the video...good luck in the finals!!! -

Re: I did my first performance!
Fri, March 21, 2008 - 7:00 PMCongratulations. I'm so glad you had such a positive experience and I'm sure the praise you received was well-deserved. I'm not a performer because I have such extreme stage fright. I do know, however, that several deep belly breathes before I do something I'm nervous about can make a world of difference. It sounds like you were able to quickly get into your groove and I think that is one of the biggest challenges. You are on your way!
