Hello, NYC! I am very excited to unveil my new workshop series, The Warrior Path on the weekend of October 30th-Novemeber 1st, 2009. The Warrior Path is a brand new workshop with new terms, techniques, and exercises intended to introduce hoopers to what we call “Warrior” style hooping. This concept combines on and off body techniques with rapid current and plane changes. The Warrior Path techniques are integrated with internal, meditative foci, as well, to help the hooper open up to their own stillness and clarity.

The HoopPath has taught Warrior techniques since it’s inception, but this will be the first time that we have concentrated this much time and energy on this wonderfully beautiful and unique approach to hoop dance. We assure you that even those who have taken HoopPath classes and workshops before will come away with new terms and concepts to further their own hoop practice. This is indeed the long awaited second chapter so many of you have asked for over the last year.

Within the HoopPath Community, the term, “Warrior” refers to an indomitable attitude or spirit to which each of us has access and, through mindful practice, can foster and grow within ourselves. The techniques of The Warrior Path help us to explore and develop an inner calm and resilience that strengthens and improves our hoop dance, while also teaching us more about our own personal power away from the hoop.

While this workshop is very much a continuation of our past workshops, we have designed this series to be equally accessible to those who have never taken an HP class before. If you have not taken a workshop with us before, you will need to sign up for Day One. Day one of WP will be very similar to Day One of our other workshops. If you have not been to one of our workshops before, you should know that the skills covered in Day One are hardly ‘beginner.’ Day One sets up the terms, concepts, and foundational techniques upon which all the advanced teaching rests. Day One is easily the favorite day of most returning students.

The tickets for this workshop are offered in a variety of packages. Before when we have traveled to NYC, we have had such little space that we have been unable to offer any discounts. This time around we are very excited to have a space large enough that we can offer essentially “specials.” Here are a list of our options for HP: NYC:

Days 1, 2, and 3

Days 1 and 2

Days 2 and 3 (For returning students).

Single Day tickets for all 3 days will go onsale on Wednesday, 10/28/09.

We are VERY excited to offer, for the first time in NYC, “Bring a Friend” pricing. This means that when you and a buddy buy your tickets (two tickets) together (in one transaction) your individual tickets are discounted. If you bring 2 friends (3 tickets total) you receive an even greater price break. **Please note that you will select the “Bring-A-Friend” option to purchase TWO passes for the selected days, or THREE passes if you select “Bring-2 Friends.” These tickets are non-refundable, so make sure that your friends are committed before purchasing.

If you can only make one of the three days, don’t worry, we will be selling single day tickets beginning on Wednesday, October 28th.

Buy your tickets here: https://www.etix.com/ticket/online/venueSearch.jsp?venue_id=4612&cobrand=hooppath

Prices for 3 day pass:

Individual = $170 (9 hrs)

Bring-A-Friend (2 tix) = $300

Bring-2 Friends (3 tix) = $420

Prices for 2 day packages:

I feel like for different tricks and moves the different weights help alot. the lighter hoop i can do more arm and isolation moves and then the heavier i can do alot of body, leg and chest hooping better.

does anyone have a good weight or water amount to put in there that works good for everything. or that works good for you?

The retreat is a 940-acre family-owned tract of unspoiled wilderness offering camping, swimming, and hiking. Surrounding the ponds and two authentic cabins, apple orchards and rhododendrons cascade throughout the Queens Creek Mountains. Tent camping will be plentiful, with a secluded family camp ground set aside. Car camping and RV passes are also available at an additional cost.

I'm so excited. I've been trying to get the video on youtube with no success. Hopefully I can get it to work, but it might take me a while. The whole first performance thing was so incredible for me.

I'm relatively new to hooping. I just started in October. Last night I had my first performance, although it wasn't like a normal performance. It was more I brought my hoop along with me to this nightclub and hooped for a few minutes. I was really nervous/scared so needless to say I dropped the hoop more than a few times :( and overall I just felt that I did awful. It also didn't help that there was not a lot of room for hooping and there was stuff hanging from the ceiling so I was really limited in what I could do. By the end of the night, I just felt like crap and was ready to give up forever. Today, I feel better and I know that quitting is not the answer and I'm ready to get out there and try again. I've already got another performance coming up this weekend.

I am curious to know what some of your first hooping performances were like and what kind of things you do to prepare, both mentally and phsycially. And also methods that you use to get over any nervousness or fear you may have.

I really appreciate any advice/help you can give. If there is anything I've learned from last night it is that you have to make sure you are having fun while you are performing. :)

The preliminaries were tonight, and the finals are tomorrow. I made it into the finals! Everyone was freaking out when I performed. They even had these cool light effects while I was on stage. The move they seemed to like the most were my continuous beam-me-ups. It was so much fun! I was soooo nervous before I went on and I could hardly breathe but once the music started I just went into it and freestyled the dance. I started out the routine with an isolation then laid down for some foot hooping. I'll post the video of the final performance on youtube. I hope I can get it as video of the day for hooping.org, but that's just a dream. During intermission and after the show was over, so many people came up to me and talked about how amazing it was. I was blushing the whole time. I feel so awesome right now. I'm so excited about tomorrow! I love hooping!!

Hoop Convergence ~ Friday April 11 - Wednesday April 16, 2008

Please join us for the very first national (hopefully International!) Hooper’s Conference -- The Hoop Convergence.

The Hoop Convergence is the bringing together of a wide variety of hoopers from all over the world to create a synergistic learning environment where we will address all aspects of hooping. There will be panel discussions and workshops with a variety of amazing teachers and hoopers from all over the United States.

The Convergence will be held in beautiful the Hooper Haven of Carrboro, NC. Everything in this wonderful town is in walking distance and already many local hoopers are opening their homes or offering camping on their property to visiting hoopers from all over the country. Make plans to join us now.

To learn more, volunteer, make suggestions or arrange for a place to stay, please join the tribe Hoop Convergence at: http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

Here are some of the amazing workshops and activities that are confirmed as of right now:

HOOP SKILLS WORKSHOPS
Currently, Spiral, Revolva, Caroleeena and Jewels are all confirmed to teach. These workshops will teach a variety of hooping techniques, including hand work, footwork, bodywork and dance, as well as hooping specialties, such as street performance and twin hooping. There will be workshops appropriate to all skill levels and other classes will be added to the curriculum as they are confirmed. Workshop details are forthcoming.

YOGA, INJURY PREVENTION & HEALING
We will host an injury prevention discussion panel made up of yogis, hoopers, massage therapists and other body/mind workers and healers. Hopefully we will be able to offer a HoopYoga workshop as well.

COSTUME DESIGN and THEATER MAKE-UP WORKSHOPS
In addition to learning costume design and theater make-up, the Convergence will also include a trade circle, a costume swap, sewing and non-sewing methods for making/decorating costumes, pattern shares, and a discussion where we will share ideas about themes, hoopable clothing and info for creating fire safe costumes . If you stay for the entire week, there will be excursions to some kick ass thrift stores too! (Then, after the Convergence, you can try out your new threads at Shakori Hills the following weekend!)

COMMUNITY, SERVICE PROJECTS and WORLD HOOP DAY
There will also be a discussion panel on community building, event planning, service projects and World Hoop Day. Hoopin' Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, Jewels, who created Hoops for Haiti, and Caroleeena, who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica are all confirmed and will all be available to help you envision and manifest your world hoop day events or community outreach projects. (Hopefully Xta will be able to make it also!)

FIRE
On Saturday night, we will have a drum circle and fire ceremony with fire dancing. If you haven't fire hooped before, this could be your moment! There will also be discussions on Fire Philosophy & Ritual, Safety, Tool Repair, Craft and Professionalism. (There may also be a workshop highlighting a variety of different fire hoops and build techniques. We may not have time amidst everything else to build our own fire hoops, but maybe. If not, I'm sure you can order one from a local crafter to be customized for you and ready for your arrival to NC or to be shipped to you when you return home.)

JAM ~ DANCE PARTY
Sunday night, we will have a funky, dressy, jamming hoop hop set. There will also be a pre-party, house-party for dressing and making up!

OTHER THINGS we hope to include are:
Performances by and for each other
Publicity and Marketing
Business Management and Taxes for Professionals
Teaching Techniques
Hooping with kids
Sharing Poetry and Stories
Hoop Philosophy and Spirituality

Finally, if we can manage it, and if we have enough people at Shakori Hills, I think it would be fun to try to choreograph and premier the world’s largest choreographed hoop dance! I know they would let us do it there. We just have to see if we can make it happen!

We have lots of other ideas too – Circus hooping, Native American Hoop Dance, Rhythmic Gymanastics, Hoop Yoga, integrating specific types of dance into hooping, and more – but those things may have to wait until next year … unless you know someone willing and/or able to teach! If you have an idea for a workshop, please join the Hoop Convergence Tribe and share it with us! http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

If you would like to teach or lead a discussion panel, please post that on the Hoop Convergence tribe too or feel free to PM a description to Jewels at hoopflow@gmail.com. We will accommodate what we can given space availability and group sizes. Teaching or leading a panel will enable you to attend other workshops for free. Depending on our turnout, you will hopefully also receive compensation for your efforts. (We are still working out the estimated costs for this event but we are working to keep them reasonable. Several teachers are volunteering altogether.)

Prices and other details will follow soon. New items are being added everyday!

If you can stay through the week, festivities, workshops, discussion panels and field trips will be offered Friday through Wednesday. Then, on Thursday, we'll head over to Silk Hope for a great, family-friendly, hooper-rich, inexpensive local music festival with incredibly sweet vibes through the following Sunday!

If you can't stay through the week and for the music festival, there will be plenty of hoopy goodness happening during the weekend from Fri - Sun/Mon. Do try to stay Sunday night for a big jam and costuming pre-party though!

For more information about the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Peace and Dance (April 17 - 20, 2008), go to: www.shakorihills.org

Again, if you are willing and able to participate in any way, please do! Your input and expertise are essential. So please join the Hoop Convergence tribe today. We hoopfully hope to hoop with you soon!

So far, I'm compiling lists of songs depending on my mood. I don't really know the genre, but the cd that I think is the best example is my Faericon cd.

It's official, the Hoop Path Tour will be in beautiful LA, CA, on April 7th at the Hollywood Dance Center (http://www.hollywooddancecenter.com/) from 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. The space holds a lot of hoopers I'm told, but if you know you would like to come you can hold a spot by emailing The Hoop Path at thehooppath@gmail.com. The cost of the workshop is 65 dollars payable by cash or check at the time of the event. As with all of my workshops, tuition assistance is available to those who have special needs. Below is description of the workshop and some answers to questions you may have.

****I have posted a new video on the Hooping Videos tribe in case you want to see my hooping style.****

"The Hoop Path: First Steps" Workshop

This 3-hour intensive will introduce you to the inspiring myths and powerful metaphors of The Hoop Path, a spiritual approach to hoopdance that has slowly built itself out of Jonathan Baxter's years of daily Hoop Practice. Bax's teaching incorporates prayerful guidance and unique storytelling as well as the straightforward breaking down of moves and practice of new techniques. This workshop is for those of us who already feel a connection with Hooping that goes far deeper than pure fitness, or for those hoopers who yearn to deepen and expand their Practice into subtler levels of awareness and grace. Together we will define and explore Hoop Path terms such as: pe*A*ce, Ritmo, One Tree/Two Tree; as well as established techniques such as Reversing, Breaking, Paddling and Angle Hooping.

Thoughts based on the recent PacNW shops:

I have learned many lessons already in this tour. Some of you may notice that I have omitted some terms from the curriculum for the "First Steps" workshop. As the workshop took shape we realized that we had been a little too optimistic with regards to how much info we could pack in. We have shortened our list and we believe the workshop is better for it.

Here are some other things we have learned:

1. Students are encouraged to bring pads and pens with which to take notes. We do not provide a printed text, so if you are the sort that likes to have things written down, then by all means, we encourage you. If you should forget, we will have pads available.

2. This workshop is rigorous. We hoop a lot. Though there is a long opening talk, we will easily hoop for two solid hours. Please come prepared with water, snacks, redbull (hooper crack), or whatever else. (I don't endorse redbull, I'm only trying to be funny here.)

3. My workshops are not "move swaps." At least, not by design. We work on developing a Hoop Practice and opening oneself up to winds of undiscovered expression. I expected to feel friction with this, but I think not having a list of moves to work through actually relaxed the students who came.

4. We don't actually hoop naked. Sorry. That was just a joke.

5. This didn't come up in PacNW, but we do not allow video taping.

6. The "First Steps" workshop emphasizes the Core and the Current. We will not get into Samurai Hooping.

7. You do not need to have a super small hoop for the "First Steps" workshop.

8. This is a BYOH event.

PERHAPS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING:

Many have asked about what level of hooping skill is required to attend the workshop. This has proved to be a tough question to answer. I would suggest that those interested in coming should have some flight time with hooping in their Second Current, at least, at the waist level. For those of you who are unfamiliar, this means that you should be able to hoop both directions. You do not need to be fluent in both, but some experience in both will make for a much better workshop for you. Know also that we may go over things which are beyond what you can currently do. There is no way of getting around this. If you can afford yourself some patience, this doesn't have to be frustrating. Honestly, I think is the "newbie" hooper who may have the most to gain from the approach we take to Hoop Practice.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

I wanted to let everyone that the Second leg of the Hoop Path Tour is set for San Francisco and L.A. I am very excited about the opportunity to teach a second Workshop in SF, called, "The Warrior Path." This space for this workshop has been donated to us, and I will extend that generosity by lowering the tuition to 50 dollars. The space is limited in size, however, so I must limit this opportunity to attend to those who have recently taken a workshop from me (SF, Portland, Eugene, or Seattle.) There is only room for ten of us, so pre-registration is required. "The Warrior Path" is a continuation of the ideas laid out in the "The Hoop Path: First Steps" workshop.

Watch the entries here!

FIRST PLACE: SHARNA ROSE
Please find attached my enteries to the Hot Hoop Move contest. I had big problems uploading my my footage (youtube mashed its quality so I had to send dv quality images - they took nearly an hour for 20 seconds worth of film - this is why the clips are so short.) So I apologise for the unglamourous way that I have presented the films - I hope you can see the moves enough to get the general idea.

Move 1. Flipper (A Reversal) - Start this move from hooping around the knees. Can be done either side but for the purposes of the demonstration I have done it clockwise. You will need to remove your right leg from the hoop when the gap occurs (if you were doing a kick out you would move the other leg) and then you use the foot to reverse the hoop using the knee as a pivot. Reverse the instructions to do this the other way - Its really hard either way and I cant always get it - the music has to be just right - or I don't practice it enough.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym_P8__DRq0

Move 2. Back around the Summit - Start this move standing upright and lean forward as if you were going to take the hoop behind your back and pop in. If you take the hoop with your left hand then as you come around the right side of your body you need to put your right elbow up and into the hoop, using your body as a pivot push with this elbow and pull back with the left hand. Reverse the instructions for the other side.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ekDuhjQQEE

Move 3. Jack in the Box - Start this move by doing a Reversed Summit. In this clip I start by taking the hoop around my back with my left hand - Instead of reversing the move with the elbow behind the back pop back into the hoop and use your right hand to swing the hoop onto your body (tip - use your left hand to stall the hoop and help with momentum when reversing and turn the direction the hoop is now going in). I find it more difficult to go the other way. You reverse the instructions but somehow my body gets in the way - I think more practice is required by me or it needs more swing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ7fVdbGQVU

Move 4. Back Heel Flick - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop infront and behind the body horizontally at about knee hight. On passing the hoop in front of the body with left hand use the right heel to scoop the hoop behind and up as high as you can behind your back - use your left hand to push the hoop back on your body as you pop back in. This only works this way because if you reverse the instructions the hoop is passed infront of the body.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSlfQeLDsYw

Move 5. Wind up - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop around the body horizontally in front and behind you. As the hoop comes back around your left side to the front, place your right foot on the far of the hoop and push the hoop around so that it comes over your right side, over your head and release your left foot (you can either hold the hoop with both hands or just your right). Twist the hoop over your body again using right hand and jump out backward from the hoop - take the hoop back around to the right behind you, using right hand, and pop in. Turn. Reverse the instructions for going the other way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPPYrAy4gS0

SECOND PLACE: Erica Edelman
YouTube Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P90mutX0tUg
Moves:
Move 1: Celeste / Luna
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: This is a fun move that even brand new hoopers can do. The challenge is keeping your balance at the end without hopping, but if you only do a half-turn, then it is much easier (but less fun!) I asked my beginner students to name it, and they came up with either Celeste or Luna, because the end pose looks like those pictures of a lady in the moon.

Move 2: Fun Start
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: Both this move and the previous move can be done by brand new hoopers. I was trying to figure out the "circus start" move (which I can't do) when I stumbled upon this little gem. Newbie Hoopers love it, because it is a fun and easy way to start hooping, instead of just pushing it around the waist.

Move 3: One Shoulder Duckout from Waist Hooping
Difficulty: High Intermediate
Notes: For a while I was exploring with One Shoulder Duckout variations. I put this move on a video on my website showing those variations but no one ever seemed to pick it, or the other variations, up. This one is pretty fun, but not too pretty. I generally don't do it in performances, because it does not have a high enough success ratio. (i.e. it ocassionally goes flying)

Move 4: Isolation with Turn
Difficulty: Advanced
Notes: This is a new one for me. Lots of hoopers do isolations, but I don't think I have ever seen any add a turn to it. It is difficult, but definitely do-able for anyone who already has a one-handed isolation down.

Move 5: "Not the Matrix"
Difficulty: High Advanced
The base of this move is from last year for me, but the end of it is new. It starts out going from a left shoulder duck-out to a right shoulder duck-out WITHOUT putting your head in the hoop. Now, the new part for me: THEN it goes in front of you (without your head inside, again) to a left arm duck-out. If I can get that last piece to a left SHOULDER duck-out, then I can make the move continous.

SECOND PLACE: JESSICA SPARKS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScregYQ55to
The move: SCISSOR SWITCH
accomplished by stepping out of the hoop while hooping on your knees, and using your outside knee to change currents/directions.

THIRD PLACE: NATASHA YOUNG
I call this move the spin cycle. It's swish into a toss with a spin.
My sister used to do this move when she was a baton twirler. A lot of
off body hoopdancing is similar to baton (warrior, for example) so I
thought I would give this trick a try. It's called a one spin in
baton, but I've seen them do three spins and four spins! What I
learned from watching the baton twirlers are the following:
(1) the higher you toss, the more time you have to spin around before
catching the hoop
(2) you need to throw the hoop as straight up into the air as possible
(3) always spot the hoop so that you are always aware of where it is

What Makes a Hooper

Okay so I'm sitting here at my computer looking at hooping footage for hours on end, learning new hoop moves, but mostly learning all about the lives of some of the most amazing hoopers out there. The thing that I've really been noticing lately though is how different everybody really is, and more importanly how differently the hoop has affected them.

My own experience with a hoop has also been positive, but I feel completely different from any of the experiences that I know so well from the footage. I feel 100 percent safe with in the world of hoopers, where I don't always other places. Even if I'm alone and I have my hoop I know that I have a way to start a conversation so I won't be the wall flower that I usually am, (or used to be).

I find myself wishing that more people would carry hoops around so that they would be identifiable as hoopers. I have this feeling that there is a whole world of hoopers out there and you would never know it because they only do it private, in their back yards, and their living rooms. I keep going places where I expect to meet hoopers and I'm the only one there. It's not like I'm going to some random club either. I'm talking about Venice beach on a Saturday or the free concerts at Santa Monica Pier, or the Cemetary screenings. Out of thousands of people how can I be the only hooper?

I guess my point is that the only thing that truely defines a hooper is the hoop. I know there are other characteristics that hoopers seem to have that are great, but just because someone is creative or centered, or friendly or goal oriented, does not mean they spend any time in the circle. I say display your hoop proudly, in the back of your car on your shoulder walking down the street, on the porch in front of your house, and around your body.

I'm hoping it will be a good forum for people to ask questions, and find out how the movie is going, speculate on what's happening, give us ideas on what to go shoot, etc. Mostly I just want to start getting feedback from our audience, so here's your chance.
