So, here we go! Here is the official thread for folks to post questions about what's going on or for us to work out things we have talked about in class. Here is the original blurb for the weekend:

Come Jam with the Hoop Path in NC July 12-15

The Hoop Path tribe would like to invite you to join us in flight here in Carrboro, NC on the weekend of July 12th-15th to meet us, commune with us as a tribe, and share stories of your own and your Community's.

The Hoop Path is a class and workshop series intended to build and support connections between Hoop, Hooper, and the world we share with each other. The Hoop Path class has existed for two wonderful years and continues to grow even beyond this little town. Recently I have traveled to reach out to other communities and hoopers to share what we have been learning together in our local tribe.

As these recent tours have afforded me the opportunity to meet many of you, you have shared with me your stories of your own hoop paths. Many of your stories of your life with the Hoop, are also stories of profound, personal transformation. We believe as many of you do, that the hoop offers a path towards things greater than many of us have known before. First and foremost perhaps, the hoop's path leads us to our true, unedited sense of Identity (Ritmo).

It is indeed a troubling time for the world in which we live. War, hate, and cruelty dominate the airwaves and lives of so many throughout the World. Beliefs have become walls and fences to keep us isolated and afraid. In the face of so much despair, hope fades and weariness overcomes many of us. The rhythms of the world of Man scare many of us into a subdued stagnation. We slowly accept things we would have once considered unacceptable. We too often abide by the rules of others without questioning their legitimacy or the authority of our leaders.

We, of the Hoop Path tribe, believe that a life without rhythm equals a death without meaning. We believe that all of life is an infinite number of rhythms which pass into and out of us everyday. We believe that just as negative rhythms can be passed to each other, so too, can positive rhythms. We believe that the hoop can help us find these positive rhythms within ourselves and give us the Strength to pass these rhythms along to others in need. We believe that 'self help' is by extension, 'Community help.' We intend to collect and pass positive rhythms with you over a long Southern Summer weekend.

We as a tribe want to spend some time with you. We offer our homes to you to stay in, transportation between events, and our open and welcoming hearts. We will also offer three workshops (3 hrs/ 1 per day) on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at a special rate of $100 for all three, $70 for two, and $40 for one. These will be Hoop Path workshops intended to teach the methods and theories of the Hoop Path curriculum. We will be announcing registration for the workshops at a later date when we have our Paypal account up and running. Space for the workshops will be limited and pre-registration will be required.

The workshops are optional. All the other events are free of charge and open to all. You can come to all of them or just one of them. It is up to you. We do have hotels and motels here you can stay in if you prefer.

We will have a full schedule of events intended to build both Self and Community. We are still planning this, but here are the events we know will happen:

Thursday evening: We welcome y'all to join us at the weekly hoop jam to live music at our (very crowded!) local co-op from 6-8pm.

Friday:
Workshop from 1:30-4:30 pm.
Hoop Jam
Dinner provided by The Hoop Path Tribe at Hoop Path Madre Beth's home.

Saturday:
Workshop from 1:30-4:30 pm.
Fire Ceremony with Hoop and Drum Circle

Sunday:
Hoop Brunch at local co-op, 11 am to 1pm
Workshop from 1:30-4:30 pm
"Hoopers' Ball" at a huge indoor venue 7 to 10 pm. This is a ball just for us. You don't have to worry about leaving room for non-hoopers, cuz we're the ones that rented the place. ALL are invited to this. It is free and open to the public.

The closest airport is in Raleigh, NC (RDU) which is thirty minutes away. Charlotte is also an option, but it is about 2.5 hours from us. If you are mapquesting us, we are in Carrboro, NC 27510.

Please, please, please join us. We welcome you.

If you wish to pre-register: email thehooppath@gmail.com.

  • I finally bought my ticket so it's official - I'm coming to Carrboro!

My question is about housing. I would love to stay with a Hoop Path-er because the few people I've met from the Hoop Path thus far are so nice that I know I will have an even warmer, fuzzier sense of community if I have the opportunity to spend some time in a Hoop Path home basking in hoopiness. Unfortunately, I am one of those people that evolution would have killed off if not for modern medicine. I am terribly allergic to cats and cigarette smoke. Is there a non-smoking, non-cat-owning Hoop Path-er who I can stay with? If not, I would appreciate any suggestions for hotels or motels that will be near the events!

Even though I bought my ticket a few days ago, I'm still dancing in my seat just thinking about it - I can't wait!
    • We too cannot wait, Silverstar!! A quick answer to your question--as far as I know, there will definitely be cat- and smoke-free options. There will be a wealth of camping, or camp-like, options as well, which would also presumably take care of both those issues. Right now we are trying to compile a list of housing options so that we know exactly what we have-- we will include info about pets and smoke-free status when we break down the housing list, as well as whether households have kids (little or medium-sized) and all the numbers of beds/air mattresses/tents in each place.

I think what we'll do is: once we get a comprehensive list of the lodging options, we will pm all the out-of-town folks in order to allow you to choose according to your sensitivities--at least, we will try to do this as best we can!

Bax & I are off to the Pacific NW again day after tomorrow, so we apologize in advance for any tardiness in answering questions on this thread that might occur through sporadic internet access due to travel. We're back late on Sat. the 23rd--still room in the Seattle workshops and maybe one or two spots in Portland if there's anyone out there who wants to jump in at the 11th hour!
  • I don't know why (maybe it's the hooping.org interview), but all these NC hoopers have been coming out of the woodwork to express interest. I always knew there were Hoopers here I did not know, but I didn't realize how many. This Weekend is slowly shaping itself into a chance for our Hoop Path tribe to meet other NC hoopers and I'm stoked about it.

The Hoopers' Ball looks to be the BIG event. We have 4000 square feet to pack, so I'm hoping for a big turnout. But, as one hooper here put it, less people equals more room! We'll see.... I would rather it be packed with hoop freaks.

    So, roll call?

These are the people who I believe are certain to come from outside our Hoop Path Community:
    Jess Parks
    Nicki
    Khan
    Martine
    Surprise
    Silverstar
    Caroleena
    Colleen

    Maybe's:
    Diana (BodyHoops)
    Patika
    Jess L
    EssDub
    Revolva
    Alison (from Charlotte)
    Kaiya (la princesa)
    Dovelette

I'm sure I'm forgetting someone. I'm jamming this out before I head off, so please forgive me if I forgot to write your name down.

Please feel free to bring hoop buddies.

If you are coming, or if you are a 'maybe' let us know. We want to have as many regions and peeps represented as we can.

    • Please remove me ...

      Wed, June 27, 2007 - 3:30 PM
... from the "maybe list"and put me on the HELL YEAH! list
      I appreciate it.

      :D
I'll be tearing into NC on that friday at 9:15 am and leaving the next Monday at 6 am.
      Awwwwww....yeeeeeahhhh!

      love and kisses to all,
      kaiya
  • baxter, thanks for telling me about this weekend in response to my post in the other tribe! :)

being a newbie to hooping, i'd love to know more about the workshops -- are they for more advanced dancers, or can a beginner like me learn and contribute? (i wouldn't want to hold the group back in any way!) i believe i'm clear that weekend, so a philly to NC road trip might just be in order... yay!
    • Awesome, y'all. Just keep us posted as your plans evolve! I'll post the transportation and lodging roster when most of the gaps are filled in. Martine, you should take the train to Durham NC (no station over here in Chapel Hill/Carrboro)--we'll have someone pick you up when you arrive! (I knew you were going to be super-psyched about Diana!)

Bax is working on a fairly comprehensive schedule post to go up either later tonight or sometime tomorrow. Meantime, Patika, we will post mapquest links in the comprehensive schedule thread so that everyone can be well-oriented to all destinations. However, you will see that our town is so incredibly small, it will be virtually impossible to get lost. Just so no one worries!

Jennifer, we would LOVE to have you! There will be many different levels of "flight time" (hours spent hooping) represented at the workshops and events. My guess is that your hooping will markedly improve from the instruction as well as all the fabulous hooper mojo that will be swirling around you. However, you will have to prepare your "warrior mind" and be ready to be ok with dropping the hoop, possibly over and over again, as you try new things. Most of us have been through a TON of seriously awkward beginner-hooping moments and so you will be surrounded by sympathy and support. Again, we'd absolutely love to meet you and greet the beginning of your own personal hoop path.

More soon! Time to hoop ~
  • <----quivering with excitement.............................12 DAYS AND COUNTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    • yay! I'm really happy to come hoop with you all and meet new hooper friends...
i'm bringing my good friend, Wyndhooper with me...he's super excited too!
      see you all soon...
      :o)
      • this may be silly, but, should we bring our own blindfolds?
        • Feel free to bring your own blindfold if you already have one you love, but we will have official Hoop-Path-issue blindfolds (torn individually by us!) for all students at the workshops.

Incidentally (in case anyone has noticed the considerable time lapse since the announced info-post, still to come) Bax should be able to make that FAQ-ish type post within the next 48 hours. We've spent the last 3 days trying to get him moved out of his old place and it was a time-consuming bear of a task, but it is now essentially over (still a lone ShopVac and a few other odds and ends to be retrieved) so not to worry.

In the same vein, I will be posting about who stays with whom/associated transportation in the upcoming week. Still collecting the last few pieces of relevant info from all parties. If anyone is coming and has not let us know your lodging preference (hotel or staying with Hoop Pather, and whether you would be willing to camp--also whether you have special lodging needs, like allergies and so on) please do so as soon as you can. Hoop Pathers, if any of you are able to sign up for a transportation shift and/or able to host one or more out-of-town guests, please let me know.

          More manana! Or Monday!
  • I'm not exactly sure why I have this overwhelming urge to tell you all that I won't be attending...but I SO want to share in this amazing hoop energy to be...my wonderful & amazing husband offered to gift me, for my birthday, with joining you all for the weekend, but our eight-year-old son just can't deal with mama going away by herself. We tend to do almost everything as a family and we've not been apart overnight before. I 'm thinking I just needed to vent...I will be hooping my heart out to all of you, sending joyous full circle energy. Thanks for creating a space to share. Feeling better about this already...maybe I'll head outside to spin...
    • Melissa, as a mama I know exactly how you feel. My four year old is not to happy that mama is going away. this will be the first time i will be away from my children for longer than a day. i'm sure i will have a feeling that "phantom" children will be with me the whole time. (reaching for little hands when crossing the street and the like.) while i know it will be hard for both myself and the kids, i also know i'll come back a better mama being able to take time just for myself. maybe try having another heart to heart with your son? i would love to meet another hoopin mama.
      • I agree with Colleen. I hear where your coming from and yet, also, it's important to kid's independence to experience mom's independence. You are a role model as well as a mom. I grew up as a Navy brat. By the time I was eight my dad had traveled extensively and my mom had done a bit of traveling too. It made me look forward to being a grown up and being able to do those things myself. (And I have. Oooooh, I have.) Consider this an opportunity for your son to bond with your husband. One-on-one father/son time is so important. Mom time is also so important. It makes you a better mother and a happier, more well-rounded human being. Eight years old is old enough to spend a weekend with dad. (Heck, by eight my dad was taking me on trips just me and him. It was awesome. Maybe your husband could do something like that. Make it a big celebration. Maybe go to a theme park or something.) Think about it. Parents are the ones who set the tone for these things. If you make it okay, it will be okay.

        Hope to see you!
