Hello, NYC! I am very excited to unveil my new workshop series, The Warrior Path on the weekend of October 30th-Novemeber 1st, 2009. The Warrior Path is a brand new workshop with new terms, techniques, and exercises intended to introduce hoopers to what we call “Warrior” style hooping. This concept combines on and off body techniques with rapid current and plane changes. The Warrior Path techniques are integrated with internal, meditative foci, as well, to help the hooper open up to their own stillness and clarity.

The HoopPath has taught Warrior techniques since it’s inception, but this will be the first time that we have concentrated this much time and energy on this wonderfully beautiful and unique approach to hoop dance. We assure you that even those who have taken HoopPath classes and workshops before will come away with new terms and concepts to further their own hoop practice. This is indeed the long awaited second chapter so many of you have asked for over the last year.

Within the HoopPath Community, the term, “Warrior” refers to an indomitable attitude or spirit to which each of us has access and, through mindful practice, can foster and grow within ourselves. The techniques of The Warrior Path help us to explore and develop an inner calm and resilience that strengthens and improves our hoop dance, while also teaching us more about our own personal power away from the hoop.

While this workshop is very much a continuation of our past workshops, we have designed this series to be equally accessible to those who have never taken an HP class before. If you have not taken a workshop with us before, you will need to sign up for Day One. Day one of WP will be very similar to Day One of our other workshops. If you have not been to one of our workshops before, you should know that the skills covered in Day One are hardly ‘beginner.’ Day One sets up the terms, concepts, and foundational techniques upon which all the advanced teaching rests. Day One is easily the favorite day of most returning students.

The tickets for this workshop are offered in a variety of packages. Before when we have traveled to NYC, we have had such little space that we have been unable to offer any discounts. This time around we are very excited to have a space large enough that we can offer essentially “specials.” Here are a list of our options for HP: NYC:

Days 1, 2, and 3

Days 1 and 2

Days 2 and 3 (For returning students).

Single Day tickets for all 3 days will go onsale on Wednesday, 10/28/09.

We are VERY excited to offer, for the first time in NYC, “Bring a Friend” pricing. This means that when you and a buddy buy your tickets (two tickets) together (in one transaction) your individual tickets are discounted. If you bring 2 friends (3 tickets total) you receive an even greater price break. **Please note that you will select the “Bring-A-Friend” option to purchase TWO passes for the selected days, or THREE passes if you select “Bring-2 Friends.” These tickets are non-refundable, so make sure that your friends are committed before purchasing.

If you can only make one of the three days, don’t worry, we will be selling single day tickets beginning on Wednesday, October 28th.

Buy your tickets here: https://www.etix.com/ticket/online/venueSearch.jsp?venue_id=4612&cobrand=hooppath

Prices for 3 day pass:

Individual = $170 (9 hrs)

Bring-A-Friend (2 tix) = $300

Bring-2 Friends (3 tix) = $420

Hi all! I have a brand new 3/4", 38"/39" diameter 5 wick fire hoop that has never been lit. Jewels of HoopDrum made it for me albeit is one of their older models (last year). It is not taped, but meticulously sanded all over. The wicks are bolted and wired down. It is a great hoop.. it's just that my ex-boyfriend gave it to me.. so it had some weird mojo for me... and by the time I was over it I had outgrown the hoop. I'm using 1/2", 3/4" and 35" diameters now.

I know I posted this before and never followed up on it.. but I'm serious now ;9
Anyway... $100 should do it plus whatever the shipping should be. I'm in Sarasota FL now.

there is a duality between focusing on where a daily practice will hopefully bring me (ie- the end result) and what the day itself will hold (ie -the journey itself). it feels strange to be able to hold both of these ideas in mind at the same time, but so far i can't really say which i am more focused on.

it reminds me of what Bax said at HP3---you can have a daily practice regardless of how you feel, and even regardless of how that day's hooping makes you feel! this blew me away...i am so used to only doing things that will "fix" me or make me feel good. but doing something simply because it is what i DO is alien and exciting to me. the way he spoke of daily practice almost reminds me of what a strong marriage must be like: a commitment to the relationship itself regardless of the myriad ups and downs of life.

so i guess i am trying to marry my hoop anew every day! :)

I am driving with all of my hoops to FL; wrapped and tubes of unwrapped. This is going to be a 12 hr drive and I only have a sedan. I'm thinking of laying down yoga mats on the roof of my car (to keep them from scratching my car and sliding around) and bungee cording them to the inside of the car. Does anyone see any potential hazards with this? I've done it with my hoops wrapped in plastic before (without the yoga mats) from here to Raleigh and they seemed to do just fine. These have a big farther to go.

On second thought I may just leave the tubing here and buy more there. It will already be a lot of hoops (30 or so) on the roof of my little toyota corolla.

Any better ideas?

We'll offer the first two days as an intro to folks new to the Hoop Path, or a refresher to returning students, covering all the HP basics: Two Birds, Two Trees, Ritmo, pe*A*ce, etc.

Those very familiar with HP can show up for days 2 & 3, in which we'll expand out into some newer material, including Warrior style, sustained stalling, and off-body work (with single hoop and with twins!)

We're terribly excited to return to the Windy City and our many good friends there. Here's a link to a really nice article in Chicago Now, featuring our homegirl Heather aka HooperPower:
for a long time i have been operating under the delusion that the ultimate goal is to make my 2nd current hooping EXACTLY like my 1st current. i viewed any differences between the two as evidence that i was not a "real" hooper yet.
BUT, today while actually *grooving* in 2nd current, i realized that both currents have two distinctly different ritmos or rhythms from one another. WOW! the realization that i do need to seamlessly duplicate 1st current in 2nd, the fact that i can find the unique (not "clumsy") ritmo that i possess in 2nd current was such a great breakthru.
i feel really grateful.

"To all who love Elias,

Elias mother here. Among Elias' friends are a few people who have contacted psychics about Elias and several of them are giving me reason to hope that Elias is alive - but he is in danger. They think that he has been taken by some people, probably two men and a woman, and that they are in over their heads, are unstable and irrational, and do not know what to do at this point.

One of these psychics - and I was assured she had not been given this information - said that Elias has three women's names on his mind. Those names are Anna, Marie and Nina. Those are me and his two sisters. If this psychic could see this, it gives me a lot of hope.

There is a woman who lives in that area who was caught trying to cash a check of Elias' and the bank caught her name but she got away.

I am asking everyone, PLEASE, send thoughts of love and forgiveness to these people, that their negative energy may dissolve and they may see a way out and listen to their conscience and not do anything rash.

It is very important to gather yourselves, and find your deepest wisdom for this. It is counterintuitive - but do not send anger their way. Send love, send calm, and send forgiveness.

And to Elias, send loving support.

Thank you very much. We all love Elias.
Just wanted to get the word out that we will hold a vigil space for our missing friend and brother Elias Sorokin instead of our usual Maidan Class. If you are not familiar with the circumstances of Elias's disappearance, please read on below. You do not need to bring your hoops. We will light candles, play singing bowls, and hope/wish/pray for his safe reappearance.

From Minx Larsen:

Apparently one of our friends has gone missing. Here is a note from Minx Larsen about what is going on with Elias:

... he went up to Northern California for a few meetings and has not returned to LA. He was last seen Monday evening 7/20/09 around 8 pm in Oakland.

A text was received to my dear friend Andrea (his good friend and business partner) on Monday night at 10 pm that he would be arriving back to LA around 4 am, Tuesday morning. He has not been heard of since.

We have now found out that someone has tried to cash a falsified check (he carries his check book on him at all times) and tried to use his credit cards.

If you have any information, if you've seen him, anything at all. Please email me at minx006.9@gmail.com or call me 323-314-7200. Although, I'm happy for your best thoughts and well wishes please do not bombard my email or phone. I need relevant information at this time. I know all of your hearts are with us at this time.

Please post this to your facebook. Even if you do or don't know Elias.

We have filled a missing person and have a private investigator, we are looking for answers and need your help.

With all my heart,

Hi y'all,

Well, I had my eye surgery, but on the right eye instead of the left. Things are not looking good for either eye, the right literally as well as figureatively, nor the pain. I made an update vido on You Tube if you want to see how bad I look.

I am in more pain now and that's not how it should be. The doctor said that I should have a lot less pain and also that I should see what I was able to see before the surgery. Well, I can't see anything. I have light perception but that's it. All I see is white. But one good thing, I'm not sensitive to light like I was before the surgery! So let's look at the BRIGHT side! * groan-bad joke! *

For now I just have a lot of drops to put in and hope the swelling starts to go down and hope the pain goes away. and my sight, little that I had, comes back. If it doesn't get better: 1. He won't try the left eye (makes sense), and 2. He has nothing else that he can do for me. Not a good thoughtt.

But the worst is that I can't hoop for at least 10 days!!! How cruel can doctors be?

She has been really trying very hard to deal with the pain that she has been having. The past 2 days we have been going to the doctors and trying to find something that would help for at least a week but the pain pills are not helping. They are not sure what is happing to her eye but it is really inflamed and nothing looks like it is helping. She really is torn about not being able to make it. She does not know if she can make it next year or what is going to happen during the next year. But she and I will try to make sure we can make it.
We now have more appointments for the rest of the week and still the surgery next week. She really wanted to meet every one and she is now in tears about not being able to go. She really feels like she has allot of friends that she would love to meet. The past few years since she has been going deaf-blind has been really hard on her. She has lost so much and a lot of friends she use to have has gone. So few people want to take the time to try and communicate. The she started hooping and it really makes her happy to do that. Makes her feel more normal. I wish and so does she if she could find someone around here to enjoy hooping. But so far no luck at that. She does love to make videos and really does like to hear what everyone has to say.
Again,
We just wanted to apologize to everyone for not being able to make it.

Hey all,
I know the retreat schedule is packed and you all most likely won't have that much time to explore, but i thought I'd mention some interesting things to check out. This may be of use to those of you bringing non-hooping spouses or family who might want to go exploring.

You other locals, please add suggestions, as I'm sure there will be many things I miss.
Patricia

So, in no particular order:

A Southern Season - sort of the Zabars (for you NYCers) of NC. A Southern Season is just a few minutes drive from downtown Carrboro. It is a wonderful gourmet food mecca where you can get everything from real black truffles and pink Himalayan salt to grits and pork bellies. The store offers free samples, and, if you bring a jar of something intriguing to the information desk, they will sometimes open the jar and let you sample the product before you buy.

The UNC Botanical Gardens. Again, just a few minutes from downtown Carrboro. admission is free, the gardens are lovely and fascinating, and there are running\hiking\dog walking trails surrounding the gardens.

The Coker Arboretum. This is actually a part of the UNC Chapel Hill campus. The arboreteum is predominantly home to lilies, NC native plants, and exotics from Asia. It makes a lovely shaded place to stop and sit a while during your explorations.

Kidzu Children's Museum. I don't know anything about this personally, but have heard really good things about it from my friends who have children.

The Open Eye. A truly grungy but very homey coffee house. A great place to see a goth mingle with someone in a prarie skirt in perfect harmony. Hmmm, come to think of it, that's a good way to describe Carrboro.

What's the name of that new coffee place right next to the bike shop on Main Street?
Is it the Looking Glass Cafe? Nice folks. They don't serve lattes or other frothy drinks, just basic French pressed coffee and tea, but it's all good and tasty. Nice folks running it. And the place is just lovely, tidy, mostly wood, with lots of outdoor seating. Oh, and they apparently also have a head shop\skateboard store attached to it. That was not open at my last visit, and it appears to be a source of some controversy.

ooh, everyone, help me out. I'm at work and my brain is dead.
I had a longer list, and can't remember anything else.
Ya'll add on as you see fit.

I questioned whether it was even worth it to try finishing class and decided that there was nowhere I would rather be. I love our community. thanks to everyone who helped tonight, I don't know how I would have gotten through without you.

I accidentally hooped for a few seconds with sh**s on last fall. I forgot that I had them on. But other than that, I've always been barefoot when hooping.

I let my roots dig in to the ground, or floor, or mat and let the trees sway with the current, knowing I have a secure connection with the earth.

It just depends on what you're used to. If you don't go barefoot a lot and you hoop on a rough surface and move around a lot, you might get blisters. But if you do it a lot, you'll develop thick padding on the bottoms of your feet, and no more blisters.

The class will formally run until 1:15pm, but folks limited to a true lunch hour can leave at 1pm--we'll just be free hooping those last few minutes. If the class goes well we may extend that time frame, but for now I really wanted to offer something to single and stay-at-home parents who might never get the chance to come to an evening class.

The class will be geared towards beginners, but could end up being mixed-level if we draw a motley crew. I can roll with whoever shows up. Looking forward to the challenge!

I'd love to have people gather for snacks, beer/wine, beverages etc around 6 or 6:30 so we can all catch up.... and then we'll light the fire after that. How does that sound Bax? Ann? If you need directions to my new place, please send me a personal message and I'll get them to you. See you Sunday.

By the way, Bax, does this fire have a theme?....And maybe we could go with something other than "This is why I worship Baxter..." That one is kinda getting old...just a suggestion.

My body can't even hoop but I offer the field if any of you would like to come. My IPOD boom box is super loud (we discovered last weekend) and totally blasts for the jam, but I would need someone to bring their IPOD and playlist. Please chime in if you want to come tomorrow. If we get about 4 or 5 people who want to brave the heat then we'll go for it and I will post by noon tomorrow if it is a "GO." I can always turn the sprinkler on for fun "Hooping through Water." The covered area at Town Commons would offer some shade at least, but I always want folks to feel welcome here since I have the space. Peace to you, Beings of Wonder!

Oh, and it would have to end promptly at 5, cuz I'm "off to JOIN the Circus" at 5:15.

few hours of intense meditative style hooping. My brain (blindfolded) was connecting to the divine within and golly I feel like I have been
baptized for sure. I am wet, (water analogy 'y'all) from the sweat and tired from the little muscles working in places that I had not worked
before during my practice periods. Afterward, all I could do was to lay on the Margaret Jenkin's dance studio beautiful hardwood floor and stare the ceiling for a few minutes before getting ready go walk part way home.

Now I get it on a deeper level...it is less about mastering the cool tricks and more about connecting within so that can shine in every pore of your body and then connect to the hoop.
So, this sudden influx of hooping has spurred some questions to arise for me. Maybe you could help...

1.) Do you ever have days that no matter how (not) hard you try, you just can't seem to find pe*A*ce?
2.) What do you wish to see happen to the hooping community in the next few years?
3.) Is there anything about the hooping community that you wish you could change?
4.) Where do you do the majority of your hooping?
5.) Do you have a favorite hoop, and if so, what does it look like? Size? Do you purchace it, or make it?
6.) What "move" or "trick" are you working on currently (Bax, I think, would call it the 'belief' stage? Correct me if I am wrong...)
7.) Do you take any workshops or classes? How often?

Much love, and happy hooping,

Ann and Baxter are coming to Austin and I am so excited! I want everyone to join in the fun and experience their beautiful work. We have a growing community of hoopers here and many of them are not familiar with hoop path.

I am wondering if some of you who have attended Hoop Path retreats, workshops or classes would be willing to write testimonials about your experiences with hoop path that I may share with some of the local folk.

I would love to see if there were skills that you learned, revelations that you had, transformation in your hoop practice, relationships, life. What was your favorite part of the experience? What have you kept with you?

Thanks for sharing.

I am very excited to be returning to the wonderful Flow Art Community of Richmond, Virginia. The last time we were in Richmond our venue was rather tight, so this time around we have found a spacious 5,000 square foot workshop space to provide more room to move and express and take our hooping Practice even higher.

If you don't know, let me be the first to tell you that the Richmond is quite the hot spot (literally) for some of the most skilled spinners of fire that I have seen. To be honest, I had been naive to this when I headed to Richmond on our last trip, but I was, well... gratefully enlightened when I met these very decent and very skilled dancers and manipulators. With this in mind, I am honored that I have been asked by John Reinhold to come back to Richmond for one more trip down the HoopPath. Thank you, Richmond, for your invitation to come back and the opportunity to learn from you, as well.

The LED is a SuperMorph version with 20 LEDs that slowly morph through different colors. It has only been burned a handful of times (under 10). This is a beautiful hoop. I am only selling it to get the money to aquired a smaller one. It has 6 wicks (hand-done kevlar wicks). I has a strip of gaffer tape on the inside for added grip and some on the outside, in flourescent pink and yellow. It's like psychedelic fire. :) The tape can be removed before purchase or left on. I payed $300 with $30 added for shipping. I am asking $200. If you are interested, please contact me at gtines23@gmail.com. Also, contact me for questions on possible price negociation. Thank you and have a wonderful day. -Gina

I'm not sure why, but recently new members have joined MTG. Looking at these individuals profiles, I can not fathom any reason what so ever why they would be interested in joining a hooping tribe. They appear to have no ties in the hooping community, nor any indication that they have an intrest in hooping. These profiles are on a high level of "sexual exploration", (not that I have anything against that)...but MTG is not the place for it. Seeing that MTG was originally set up as a safe enviorment for others to post their videos, I would feel terriable if anyone was haressed or "voyeured" (is that a word?) when they posted a share. I also did not want this to be a private group.

Seeing that activity has been slow on MTG, I figured sending a request to Tribe management to take down the tribe seemed like the easiest thing to do. So just a heads up that a request has been sent.

Hey All,
Several months ago I had a few hoops that were decorated with a lovely pearlescent tape. It looked like opal or mother of pearl and made for really lovely hoops. Multiple people asked about it, and I had to tell them that the seller informed me that it had been temporarily discontinued.

Apparently, after multiple requests, the tape is now being made again and is available on EBay from Paper Street Plastics.
Here is the URL to their current prism tape auction. The photo makes this tape look a little more pink than it really is. It's really a nice white with the pink and purple pearlescence. Cool tape!

Hey Everybody,
I just wanted to say how exciting it is to see so many folks signing up. We do not expect tickets to sell as fast as last year because we are not going public with ticket sales until later. Thank you sooooo much to those who have already purchased your ticket. By buying so quickly, you are helping us plan more efficiently and effectively. With the economy being what it is, we're not sure what to expect this year, so early tickets sales go a long way in helping us determine what to expect.

If you are on the fence about coming, please know that we are very, very, very excited about this year's event. We believe this will be our best year so far. I will be posting an invitation very soon, but in the meantime, please trust that this year's event will be really special.

If you are not on the wait list, please email ann@hooppath.com. We believe that we will have enough tix for everybody, but, to make sure, we're going to hold off putting these tix online to the public for now. This doesn't mean you can't get a ticket! Write us, we'll give you the link, and we'll look forward to meeting you in June!

HoopPath: Louisville:

Hello, Louisville, Kentucky!

Thank you for you invitation to come and teach and I gladly accept. I am very excited to come to Louisville for a 3 Day Workshop series beginning on Friday, March 13th, 2009 and running until Sunday, March 15th, 2009. While I have never visited Louisville, I am excited to reconnect with those I have met who have traveled from that area to visit me in other workshop cities (Knoxville and Chicago.) I’m very grateful to our friend, Rebecca Hellemans, for putting this workshop together for us. Rebecca has explained to me that Louisville is very strategically located to many different cities, so my hope I that this workshop will pull together many hoopers from different areas for a weekend of intense (and fun) HoopPath training.

I would like to state hear (publicly) that each workshop I teach is different. It is this reason that I began a while ago naming the workshops after the destinations in which these workshops are occurring. Each Community we visit offers a different energy and texture. I have learned over the last three years of traveling that it is impossible to roll out the same exercises and methods from city to city. To do this, would be to deny the inescapable fact that different communities have different needs and desires. Also, there is the unavoidable presence of inter-personal chemistry within the group assembled. It may seem strange to those of you new to the Hoop Community when you read this type of thing, but believe me; it’s real. As students gather, they bring with them all of the cool, unique qualities that make them who they are. Some groups want to focus on the moves, some want to focus on the Practice, some want to focus on the dance, etc, etc. It’s my goal as Facilitator to move the Teaching towards those present rather than the other way around. So, HP: Louisville can only be written so much prior to coming to the first class. I come with a plan, but I don’t handcuff myself to that plan. Based on the students who I have been told are coming, I imagine that we will cover some pretty Advanced concepts over our three days together.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at Baxter@hooppath.com. If you are a brand new hooper, please feel free to contact me about attending. We have had many newbies take our workshops before. It can be intimidating, but if you’re prepared for it, it also be very inspiring. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
