oh...sooooooooo...quiet!

it's been very quiet around here. how are all of you doing? i've been busy with school, mostly.

i've decided to commit myself to reading one (non-required) book from cover to cover, which is a pretty big deal for me as I have a habit of being in the middle of many books at any given time. i'm working on "cutting through spiritual materialism" by chogyam trungpa at the moment. has anyone read this? i'd love to share about this book and what it's stirred up.

if not, what else are people reading?

I am reading Srimad Bhagavatam which is described by Srila Vyasadeva to be the ripen fruit of the Vedic tree of wisdom. I am on the 10 Canto, it is eighteen large volumes long. It has taken me quite some time to get there. I also sometimes read it online. www.srimadbhagavatam.com I am on Canto 10: The Summum Bonum Chapter 2: Prayers by the Demigods for Lord Kṛṣṇa in the Womb it has been quite relishable. The book I am really looking forward to reading is the Sri Caitanya Caritamrta by Srila Krsnadasa Kaviraja written about 500 years ago in ancient bengali. This another very large work, I actually hope to learn how to read and write bengali by studing this sacred book.

Cutting through spiritual materialism- by Chogyam Trungpa - If I could share... This is a wonderful book. A classic. I keep returning to it. I love the part -"So when you receive spiritual instruction from the hands of another, you do not take it uncritically, but you burn it, you hammer it, you beat it until the bright, dignified color of gold appears. Then you craft it into an ornament, whatever design you like, and you put it on." He also talks about spiritual collections - which I found useful application in my life. Towards the end I began to feel that he had pretty much mapped out the entire ego. I ran across this book from a review I read at Amazon. It was the first text on Buddhism that I read. WHAT GOLD! Since then, I have read some of Pema Chodron's books, but I keep going back to Trungpa. Both are so sweet and clear.

Oh yes! This is one of my favorite books of all time. It always cuts straight into my heart and moves me. I used to take it with me to read on the train on the way to school, but that became too much for me. It's very much like receiving a direct transmission from Trungpa himself. Thank you for sharing.
