Audition: Skilled Female Dancers/Performers Wanted (downtown / civic / van ness)
Reply to: info@thenekyia.org
Date: 2007-11-19, 1:59AM PST

The Nekyia (www.thenekyia.org) is a hot, up-and-coming SF-based performance company. We present an intoxicating stage show featuring the finest in dance, acrobatics, aerial and fire performance. Described as “uncomfortably sexy”, “full of passion”, and “impeccably professional”, The Nekyia’s powerful stage presence and unrepentant sensuality stir up both delight and controversy. With their saucy hips, back flips, and high kicks, they celebrate a long line of burlesque queens, leg show ladies, video vamps and pin-up nymphs, from Mata Hari to Madonna.

The Nekyia is looking for female dancers/performers to expand their bevy of showgrrrls and accommodate the growing number of requests for their services both locally and nationally.

Dancers must be fully trained in at least one of the following:
Ballet
Jazz
Belly Dance
Latin Dance
Samba

Preference will be given to dancers with additional skills such as:
Aerial
Acrobatics
Fire Performance
Theater
Something else interesting and stage-worthy

All dancers must have previous professional experience, extensive training, and be in very good shape. Strength, flexibility, and a solid understanding of musicality and dance vocabulary are essential.

Auditions will be held on Sunday, December 9th at 1pm. Email info@thenekyia.org for location and further details.

The Nekyia has added five new dancers to our line-up, each a sparkling jewel of sensuous beauty and raw, sexy grace. Learn more about Shannon, Leah, Tiffany, Rebecca, and Kat at our website, and whet your appetite for our next appearance.
There are audience favorites such as “Pure Catnip” as well as brand new tracks debuting this year. You can hear samples on our Music Page or buy the album now at iTunes or at CD Baby.

Right now we are in the middle of a run of shows at The Crucible's Fire Arts Festival. If you're in the Bay Area tonight or tomorrow, you don't want to miss this all-star production of the FIre Odyssey, featuring The Nekyia as sensuous, evil sirens emerging from the watery depths. Also coming up is the next Bohemian Carnival, Rosin Coven's Animal Masquerade at the Great American, and our trip to Seattle with Vau de Vire Society for Bumbershoot. Details below...

Coming into its fifth year, the ultimate bellydance afterparty has a new name--Nouveau Nights--reflecting the event's focus on spotlighting new material from some of the biggest names in dance. This year's 2-night event (Friday, March 16th and Saturday, March 17th in the SF Bay Area) features more than 10 debuts, including new pieces from bellydance superstar Zoe, the re-emergence of a new Lapsus, and the live debut of a number from Ariellah's upcoming DVD. Red-hot Unmata is a first-time performer and has created a controversial new production just for Nouveau Nights. Of course, many of the best elements from past shows are also on board, including the new-look Ultra Gypsy. With many talented fresh faces, Jill Parker's veteran troupe promises to surprise even their long-time fans. The nights will also continue to feature the best turntable artists and the unbilled surpise acts that make the whole mix unpredictable!
http://www.nouveaunights.com/

Due to the packed houses at our past events, ticket sales this year will be strictly limited for each night.
Pre-sales are strongly advised; we can not guarantee tickets will be available for purchase at the door!
Based on previous experience: This event will sell out.

Kristina Canizares with Scott of The Nekyia
"Get into the Groove: Rhythm Laid Bare" 1PM – 2:30PM
Put some bump in your grind and some pop in your wind by deepening your knowledge of rhythm. Footwork, locks, drops, zils -- it all moves to the beat and the better you understand rhythm and meter, the more exciting your improv and choreography. Kristina and Nekyia drummer Scott will show you how to get funky with rhythm, how to layer it, flip it, finesse and ride it like a thoroughbred. We will move up to polyrhythmic layering, when different parts of the body express different rhythms. This is a mixed-level class, if you have zils, please bring them. In the immortal words of Miami Sound Machine: The rhythm is gonna get you!
Kristina Canizares
"Tail-Shaking Tribal Latin Jazz Choreography" 2:45PM – 4:15
If Sally Bowles played Mata Hari at the Copacabana, she would rock this choreography and bring the audience to their knees. Combining the taught precision of tribal with the glitter of jazz and the spice of Latin dance, Kristina's signature style will get your blood pumping and your tail shaking. Warm up, stretch out, and dive in to this hot, juicy dance experience. Trust us: You'll be left sweaty and completely satisfied.

Just wanted to put it out there to the general community that The Nekyia is looking for a manager. It's a very happy occasion that our business is booming and we need someone to help us ride the wave to the sunny shores of success!

A manager would help us with booking, negotiating with the venue, managing shows, and would ideally join us on tours as our primary support staff. Someone with experience and connections in the industry and a genuine desire to succeed would be the perfect fit. We are looking for someone who is professional and organized, well-spoken, likeable, but also knows when to crack the whip and isn't afraid to push when pushing is needed.

Know anyone? Send them my way...

I know there is some difference in street samba vs. ballroom samba as far as the actual dancing goes, but I think some of the music could be used.

Hey, I just want to say your costumes are awesome..and way to go on doing something new with belly dance! I don't have much time to read the entire thread on burlesque. But without even reading anything about your group...my first comment was "hey hunny, come check out the Burleque Belly dancers on tribe."

In the Websters encyclopedia it was summed up as "theatrical entertainment of a broadly humorous often earthy character consisting of comic skits, striptease acts, and songs and dances performed by soloists or a chorus." Syn. Caricature

I also looked up the meaning and included it from Wikipedia.

BURLESQUE: meaning from Wikipedia
The genre's origins are rooted in the 1840s, early in the Victorian era, a time of culture clashes between the social rules of established aristocracy and a working-class society. The genre often mocked such established entertainment forms as opera, Shakespearean drama, musicals, and ballet. The costuming (or lack thereof) increasingly focused on forms of dress considered inappropriate for polite society.

By the 1880s, the genre had created some rules for defining itself:

Minimal costuming, often focusing on the female form.
Sexually suggestive dialogue, dance, plotlines and staging.
Quick-witted humor, lacking complexity.
Short routines or sketches, with minimal plot cohesion across a show.
In the 1930s, a social crackdown on burlesque shows led to their gradual downfall. The shows had slowly changed from ensemble ribald variety performances, to simple performances focusing mostly on the strip tease. The advent of various forms of pornography gradually replaced titillation.

In the 1990s and 2000s, there has been a large-scale revival of burlesque in the United States and Canada with New Burlesque performers like, Dita Von Teese, Grotesque Burlesque, Dirty Martini, Kitten DeVille, Jo Boobs, The World Famous *BOB*, Scotty the Blue Bunny, Tigger, Julie Atlas Muz, Miss Saturn, Miss Indigo Blue, Sparkly Devil, Ruby Valentine Burlesque's Sweetheart, GiO Burlesque Queen of New Orleans, and troupes such as Fluffgirl Burlesque, Red Hots Burlesque, Burning Hearts Burlesque, Starshine Burlesque, The Cantankerous Lollies, Burlesque As It Was, The Velvet Hammer, and Burlesque Houston staging burlesque events. Annual burlesque festivals include the New York Burlesque Festival, Tease-O-Rama, The Vancouver International Burlesque Festival, and Miss Exotic World. New Burlesque evolved out of the exotica/lounge music revival of the 1990s, which generated an interest in lost American pop culture.

The British burlesque revival has also been immense, performers like Kittie Klaw and the Ministry Of Burlesque have led the way and ensured that the popularity of Burlesque is growing by the day.

This has been going on for some time now, and has really caught on, but there is still some controversy about the meeting of these two art forms.

After our last two shows a number of people, from audience members to the SF Fire Marshall, said that they thought our show was burlesque belly dance. This surprised me, because we don't take off so much as a hair pin on stage, so what makes The Nekyia burlesque?

Hello...

Just wanted to let everyone know about the belly dance fusion classes that I am teaching in San Francisco and Berkeley. The classes are intimate, fun, challenging, and a great workout... here is the info:

Belly Dance Fusion
Hip isolations, undulations, shimmies, and snake arms - this class will cover all the sumptuous movements that make up a belly dancer's repertoire. Then you will learn to combine them in new and unusual ways, using inspiration from Brazilian, Cuban, modern, jazz, flamenco, and Indian dance (as well as Kristina's bizarre imagination). If you are looking for a dance class that will challenge you to relate to your body in a whole new way... this is your class.

Classes at City Dance Studios (www.citydance.org)
32 Otis Street (entrance on Colton off Brady), SF
Walking distance from BART... ample parking available
For the month of April take both classes at City Dance for the price of one!
Beginner Belly Dance Fusion
Every Tuesday 7:00-8:00pm
This beginner-level class identifies and strengthens the muscle groups used in belly dance, and the movements that those muscles can create. The classes go in ten week cycles with a different emphasis every week. Students are welcome to drop in any time, but are encouraged to stay through all ten classes.

Intermediate Belly Dance Fusion
Every Tuesday 8:00-9:30pm
The intermediate class is designed for belly dancers who already have some understanding of the basic movements (shimmies, undulations, snake arms, and isolations) but are ready to take their dancing to the next step. Classes will involve stretching and strengthening, tips on technique, layering, and drills. They will also encourage dancers to express themselves with the movements, relate to the music, and connect with their audience. Choreographies will be BD Fusion, inspiring students to think outside the box.

Classes at The Beat
2560 9th Street @ Dwight Way, Berkeley
Beginner/Intermediate Classes
Every Monday 6:30-8:00pm
All students are welcome in this mixed level class that will deliver a blood-pumping warm-up, drills appropriate to all levels, and a short choreography. Like the beginner classes, these classes will work in 10-week cycles with each week focusing on a different skill set.

I am still giddy from the amazing show of support that we received on Saturday night. My beautiful students, who inspire me so much and did an amazing job. The jaw-dropping, heart-lifting talents of lovely Liz Strong. The Brass Menagerie, who rocked the place ("sublime," commented my friends who had never heard Balkan brass before). And thank you so much to everyone who turned out in the crappy weather to pack the house. It was an honor to look out and see so many faces from the community and so many new people who were just curious to see what the fuss was about. Thank you also to Ultra Gypsy, my dear dance family who helped to put me on my path, who turned out en force. It meant so much to me.

Since I am on a roll, I also want to thank Aliena, Summer and April. These ladies have worked so hard and trusted me and my crazy ideas. It is a pleasure to work with such talented dancers!

The Hotel Utah
Saturday January 28th, 9pm
500 4th Street @ Bryant, San Francisco
Doors at 9:30pm
$13 Suggested Donation
Performers include Kristina’s saucy student troupe, Spice Rack; the gorgeous and captivating Elizabeth Strong accompanied by the musical stylings of the legendary Dan Cantrell; raucous rump-shaking Balkan brass band, The Brass Menagerie; and The Nekyia featuring original music from Scott Sterling (aka Drumspyder), choreography and dance from Kristina Cañizares, and The Nekyia debut of Aliena and Summer.

It is with unparalleled excitement, pride, and humility that I count down the final days until The Nekyia's first event: Spectacle & Bacchanalia, this Saturday evening at The Hotel Utah (details after the manifesto).

This event is the debut of a larger vision for The Nekyia, with multiple dancers, all-original music, and a clearer mission for our creation. This mission is monstrously ambitious (those who know Scott and me won’t be surprised at all to hear that). It is nothing less that the complete transformation of our human consciousness, the seemingly impossible leap into a new realm of connection, wisdom, awareness, and joy.

Being awake in the darkness is terrifying if you are alone, but we are not alone. Through art, dance, music, and beauty we can awaken together, discovering the truth that is hidden in our bodies and the joy that is too often buried by fear and isolation. This is the joy that will sustain us in our fight to preserve the world we love.

We call it Ecstatic Tribalista Groove. Ecstatic, because it comes from an intensity of emotion and energy that is larger than ourselves. Tribalista, because we are just a small part of an international tribe that is evolving parallel to us. Groove, because in the words of the feminist revolutionary Emma Goldman, “If I can’t dance, it’s not my revolution!”

So please, come and join us. The event will raise funds needed to continue building the company and will bring together some of the great talents in our community. It will be rockin’, sexy, sweaty, raw, bumpin’ inspiration.

It is my pleasure to announce that The Nekyia brought home the first Hips of Fury Ultimate Soloist Award on Sunday. The event, held in Southern California, was a competition and showcase for all that is belly dance fusion.

We had the opportunity to meet and watch some of the best belly dancers from that area including Princess Farhana, Doomba!, Devadasi, Tempest, and some hot hot newcomers, Isidis, who won the Ultimate Troupe category.

I had a blast, and I am very excited to go down to LA again next week and film the Hips of Fury DVD, which will be available shortly.

I highly recommend that you all check out this event next year as it is a fantastic showcase for truly innovative belly dance.

Besos,
Kristina
