I'll be doing underwater portraits in the swimming pool at PEX fest.
Come find me, I'll be the guy on the bottom of the pool holding his breath (and a camera).

Re: PEX summer festival underwater!
Sat, June 27, 2009 - 10:28 AMIf you want your portrait taken... consider costume. Bathing suits and nudes are fine, but some fabrics look cool floating around in the water. Sheer fabrics, loose clothing (like an unbuttoned shirt or long skirt) all look cool in water. Just make sure you can swim in it without drowning.
Long hair looks cool too, obviously.
If you'd like some idea of what underwater photos look like here is a flickr search:

Re: PEX summer festival underwater!
Sat, June 27, 2009 - 3:10 PMWooot! Yay! I'm excited!!!!
Alright... now I have to go practice my lung packing and holding my breath. Unless someone has a regulator and full dive tank they want to loan me. Or an O2 tank I can hyperventilate on first. :) -

Re: PEX summer festival underwater!
Sun, June 28, 2009 - 5:44 PMPeople who cant swim can just stick their face underwater a little bit. Radical inclusion and all that.
Maybe Giant bear can get a swimming lesson from someone? I'm pretty sure his new buddy Scooby Doo can swim.

Re: PEX summer festival underwater!
Sun, June 28, 2009 - 4:10 PMThanks Tia... I think I'm ready to go... I'll let you know if I think of anything else I need though.
I'm sure I could use some assistance when it comes time to shoot. Rounding up subjects and getting them to the pool would be good (I'll give you my bullhorn).
I do know I need your aesthetically pleasing self under the water and in my focal plane!

By the way, Transformus plans on having a class D fire in the Effigy Burn this year... unfortunately they probably WONT be holding the main burn at the bottom of the pond. :(

Re: PEX summer festival underwater!
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 12:04 AMYou didn't miss it. There are issues with setting a day and time.
I don't know when the pool is least crowded until I get there... we cant have people diving in and slamming into me on the bottom, or swimming through the shot. I don't want to monopolize part of the pool during busy times either.
I don't know when people are even available to be photographed with all the workshops and performances and events that are scheduled all over the place... I'll have to sort that out on site somehow. If I set a time now either nobody will show up or I'd pull people away from an event they really want to go to. I want to be flexible to people's schedules.
I'll probably try to do it at least once a day. I'm going to be diving to the bottom, holding my breath for a ridiculous amount of time, then swimming back up and doing it all over again. I'm not sure how long I can do this before I either pass out or my ears rupture... so It'll probably happen sporadically and will be driven mostly by when I'm not busy and when people who want their picture taken are also not busy.
I think a good method would be to leave a whiteboard near the pool with the time that I plan on shooting that day on it. So people can wander by and see it and know when to come back (do people wear watches at burns?). Problem is I don't have a whiteboard. :(
So yeah, not random times, but not really specific times at this point either.
I'm pretty sure we'll have a second underwater photographer as well... so there should be plenty of opportunities to be photographed.
Its a burn... all plans are going to go out the window anyway, and everything will fall into place somehow... right? :) -

Tue, June 30, 2009 - 5:21 PMYippie! Sounds like the most concrete plan ever :) Glad you ate those pellets :) -

Re: PEX summer festival underwater!
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 1:35 AMA whiteboard will be posted at the pool listing the time(s) for each day.
Myself and another photographer will be switching off at multiple times throughout the weekend. This will allow for twice as many opportunities.
Its a do-ocracy... if you want a set time... do your own underwater shoot. :)

Re: PEX summer festival underwater!
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 1:12 PMi'm most curious to see how you light it on fire. spinning it slowly should work to move it, but water also has 1/3 less oxygen than, well, oxygen. :P -

Re: PEX summer festival underwater!
Thu, July 2, 2009 - 4:33 PMIts possible to burn things underwater, but you wouldnt want to be IN the water with it. Trust me.
