All camp members (YOU) are expected to help set up and breakdown camp and moop the camp area once the trucks head out. In the past it usually comes down to only a few of the same people every time setting up and breaking down. To be honest, this is getting frustrating. If we work together it will be quicker and cut down on each individuals work load.

Full details of what the camp dues cover will be posted so there are no surprises after the fact. We can already guess its going to be ~$100 a head. Gas and supplies are getting quite expensive.

We need Volunteers for the following:

Drivers to and from Transformus

Food Logistics Friday morning

Brunch Crew
Friday
Saturday
Sunday
Dinner Crew
Friday
Saturday
Sunday

Full details of volunteer shifts at Transformus will be posted in the next few days.

  • Big Jawn,

Don't know if you want replies here or via PMs, but here goes.

Tom the Elder and I will definitely be there for setup and breakdown. (I guess I should tell Tom that he has a playa name already! Hee hee!)We're arriving Thursday before noon, and leaving after packing and de-mooping.

I'm up for Friday dinner. Everybody like Indian? Vegetarians and Vegans, speak up! If you are light on kitchen staff, I can do a brunch, too.

I had offered a ride down to Erick, but I have not heard back from him, and don't see him on the list. (I think he is still looking for a ticket) I'm going down in the mighty minivan, leaving late Wednesday night, and can take 2 people with me. (3 if you have reeeaally short legs! The driver needs a lot of legroom.) PM me off list if interested.

Lemme know if you need the shade structure we used for the kitchen last year. Got a bunch of 'em!
    • Hey Ludo,
Just got back from a great conversation/meeting with BigJawn and Lee and got some details regarding food logistics.

Thanks for offering to do the dinner on Friday! Indian does sound great, can you Message me some details of what you are planning on making. Pex will reimburse you for what you buy, but try to keep it under $100, that is the budget per meal, and it looks like there will be 27 people in the camp.

I will be shopping for the camp and getting what is needed for 3 Brunches and 3 Dinners, so if you need me to coordinate with you to round out the meal, let me know.....BTW we are experimenting with cooking rice then freezing it, and heating up in sealed bags in boiling water while at camp, so I will be making a Basmati Rice dish which would go real well with Indian food. Hope this helps with planning for you.

Message me off line for more info.

      Angel

PS: BigJawn hope it is ok that I jump in like this.....
      • Lucifer,

I just sent a reply e-mail to you and the rest with my menu. I was planning on making basmati there, but if you have something a bit more exotic, go for it. I find rice to be really easy to make in a camp kitchen. So, I'm not sure if pre-making and freezing will save enough time or effort to be worth the possible effect on the rice. Dunno, never tried freezing and reheating rice. Of course, you are talking to the man who made naan from scratch on a grill at Flipside for 40 people using a wine bottle as a rolling pin! I make no claims of cullinary sanity. (The naan was really good, though!)

        • Ludo,
You are amazing....Homemade Naan for 40 people using a wine bottle as a rolling pin!!!
I am kneeling and bowing to you....Can I do it with you at Transformus?

The precooking of rice is really only a test to see if it works, so when we go on the playa, it will be one less thing exposed to the grit, until it is served. The heating will be done in a plastic bag in boiling water.....There is now in grocery store shelves frozen precooked rice and I remembered when I first saw it, I thought "how lazy can someone get"....but when out in the desert, this might be a good thing...we will see.

        Lucifer, Angel & Ludo:

Rice can be precooked, dried and recooked, that is how minute rice is made. The only problem I see is some of the nutrients are lost during most of the first process. By freezing rice, there isn't really time saved since there maybe a defrosting period involved. I would soak uncooked rice a few hours before that cuts cooking time by one third.

The only problem cooking rice straight from the bag is you need low flame, correct amount of water for rice measured, and correct amount of time being cooked.
  • Hey BigJawn,
Angel here........ wanting to offer what I can do for the camp at Transformus. Lucifer and I are planning to arrive on Thurs, hopefully by noon, so we will be able to help set up camp. I will plan to bring some dinner for anyone who is going to be there for Thurs night.....
probably quesadillas, (chicken and veggie, any vegans needed?) I will also bring some casamiento rice, and a corn salad......Will the grill and kitchen set up be there for Thurs? Another thought....we maybe able to drive one of the trucks that brings down the gear/kitchen stuff???
I would be happy to do Brunch shift on Sunday and and Dinner shift on Sunday....
You have listed as one of the duties needed to get done is Food Logistics. Since I am kind of like a Burner Mommy, I don't have a 9-5 job, I can get things organized for the camp, purchasing food, etc before we leave for NC, if you would like??? I don't know how Pex works this out.
    Looking forward to hearing back.
    Angel
    • hey my long lost sexy Pexy crew! Even though I am not camping with you, my booty will be around for shakin, bakin, whatever needs a tentacle here or there!

      can't wait to see you!!!

      • Minus Double' Denise.
Have too much to do around the new homestead, and too little cash, time and energy to be trekking down to NC this time around.
But oh how I'd like to be with you all down there in the sun. (this is where a personal beaming up machine would be so great - particulate instant travel would be so hot)

Yo, I will be there on Wednesday morn. to help out with TC layout, and then helping out with DPW. I will make sure that I am available to help set up camp and what ever. I won't mind taking a turn in the kitchen. Been doing it for the last 19 years feeding those pot licker's that keep calling me dad. I will also be there till Monday, so I can help with break down. You all have a safe trip and I will see you soon.

    Peace be with you! Ed
