I'd like to thank the folks at Shampoo for helping us have a great night! All things considered, the security was thorough, but there was NO grab-assing or unhappyness going on at the door (that I heard about anyway) and they were actually rather friendly, and helpful. I'd especially like to thank 'Stone Cold' for helping us out in the parking lot. He didn't have to but it goes to show that not everything you hear about the people at the Poo is true : ) Now I'm looking forward to getting to kick it there again! It felt so good to be back at Shampoo after a years of avoiding it. Nostalgic, definitely! Thank you everyone

Yup, thanks to all the friendly helpful staff... except for those bouncers who ate all the birthday cupcakes Maro made for me. Seriously, who does that!?!?

Friendly? Ha, maybe to cute little bunny girls they're friendly but my experience was a bit different.

dude, i was in a kilt (or a "bunny" outfit) and i went in and out to my car about 10 times throughout the night and each time i returned i got the same treatment - a non threatening pat down for weapons etc, a "go have fun", and that was it. it wasn't like the airport/ shampoo of 10 years ago - trust me. they mellowed out a lot last nite (all things considered)

One time when I went out and came back in, I got searched and they took something from me. It was a small box with a little glass jar of dirt from California in it. I had come straight from the air port to the club so I didn't have time to empty my pockets. Ok... I guess I can understand that. I mean, it was OBVIOUSLY just dirt. Couldn't possibly mistake it for drugs. But whatever. I let it go.

Later I went out again and when I came back in, I went in through the side door because someone opened it as I was walking up. I didn't think much about it... But 15 mins later while I was in the bathroom, one of the bouncers came in and grabbed me and drug me out of the club and told me to leave. I had no ride and everyone was inside so I stuck around and tried to talk to the bouncers. They were total jerks as I talked to them and only after about 10 mins of them verbally bashing me did they force me to apologize so I could go back in. As I was going back in, they continued by saying "This is their first party. They'll learn. Tell your crew we're serious around here."

I dunno. I guess they could be worse... But I really wasn't happy with they way I was treated and talked to. I felt like I was targetted and picked on throughout the night. At the very least, it put quite a damper on my mood, even though I tried not to let it.

And I gotta say that it was really only the big bald white guy that was offensive to me. The rest were cool enough. The bald white guy seemed like he just wanted to fuck with me all night.

that stinks to hear stuff like that! did the guy that hassled you have a hoop libre? if he did, that bald white dude was 'Stone Cold' - the same guy that spent an hour with me and my peeps at 3:30 trying and succeeding in getting my door open after i locked my keys in. that sucks big time if he was a dick to you cause he was so super cool to us later on in the night - like he was about to take the back fence apart to help us out. its hard to believe we may be thinking about the same person though not really cause he does go by 'stone cold'...

i guess ya just had a big "fuck with me sign" on the back of your head or something after that 1st time going through. most of those guys have been doing it (security there) for the past 5-10 years, so i think i can see where their cockiness came from about PEX folk and our "1st party" (there). anyways, i'm glad you managed to see past this persons ignorance whoever they are (which was to be expected) and make the best of it. it was a fucking amazing party, and i hope the next one goes way better for you there mike. just be more careful next time ya break the rules. (if that isn't the most annoying thing that someone could ever possibly say after the fact... lol)

hungry hungry poo people I suppose eat others cupcakes. didn't hear about that one... maybe they thought they were like "special" cupcakes or something ya know. yeah that hella stinks, but its Shampoo - not PEX and standard club rules (like no outside food) are clearly stated and do apply, unfortunately. i hope there was enough other good stuff going on to make it a truly happy birthday for you!

It's good to be a "cute little bunny girl" but I did think the bouncers and entire security staff did an amazing job. These cats *know* what they're doing, the move like a unit, a well-oiled machine, and were a joy to watch while parked right out front for our "safety meetings". The way they took down the canopy and gates in the parking lot, the way they always had each other's back at all times, the way they refused to work alone but worked together at all times was amazing! I told one of them so, and his face lit up in such a glowing grin, he pointed to me and told the person next to us that he "loved this girl" and gave me a full-body hug just like we share with each other.

Just another tree in the forest of our family trees!

While I agree that "Stone Cold" was a bit forceful at the door when I did my greeter shift and could have been nicer in a few cases when "fake" id's were suspected, the fact that he came out to Marcus' car at 4 am and helped him for like an hour to get his door open after locking his keys in the car and he totally redeemed him. You have to realize that this is their club and them being difficult at the door is self protection. I know it's hard for all of us to make such an adjustment but once you got inside I felt the security was really nice and respectful. I didn't see them jacking anyone up or throwing them out.

Mikey it sucks that you had a bad experience with the staff. There is no excuse for security to be overly rude or touchy. But honestly walk a mile in their shoes. I did nightclub, concert and private security for 10 years. Dealing with three thousand drunk people a week will make you a little jaded. Especially when you are having to break up fights and put your life on the line every night for something like $10-$15 dollars an hour. I did this for years and then finally was almost killed in a riot at a local night club. I had my cheekbone broken, 6 teeth chipped, still have permanent nerve damage in my left hand and ended up getting arrested by the Philly police for all my trouble. We only had 5 bouncers working that night and got into a brawl with a 30 man bachelor party. I got maced in the face by my own co-worker and got the shit kicked out of me. I was able to get up and continue fighting for another few minutes before another coworker pulled out a handgun and started firing rounds into the air to stop the melee. A few of our opponents took off but the rumble continued. The manager of the club called 911 AFTER she heard the gunshots and the cops were too scared to even show up. Finally a female cop we knew showed up 8 minutes after the 911 call. (there is never a cruiser more than 30 seconds from the location of this venue EVER) Many cops dont show up for "shots fired" or "man with a gun" calls because believe it or not, they don't want to get into a gun battle. Our opponents started fighting with her too, she call "officer needs assistance" and within 30 seconds it seemed like the entire Philly police dept. showed up. They ended up arresting me, because I had a gun too, and arrested 14 of the guys we were fighting. It turned out two of the guys in the bachelor party were off-duty cops and the whole file on the incident conveniently disappeared. Go figure.

And we had brawls go down every single night i worked. I had guns, knives and clubs brandished at me. Philly used to be a much rougher town. So put yourself in this bouncers shoes.....what would you do with some kid you saw "sneeking in" the side door? You would toss his ass and send him home.

We are very fortunate to be involved in a community where the majority of our members are non-violent and respectful. With the exception of th incident that led up to the police coming to heartburn we have never had a single serious problem with anyone that has showed up to PEX. But trust me, the guys that we have doing security are very respectful and nice, but they will definitely handle business when it comes down to it. That is the reason we are all safe at PEX.

So instead of focusing on the negative experiences of one or two people, lets look at the wonderful amazing experience that Phoenix Rising turned out to be and how thankful we are to even be granted this opportunity. I know I am very thankful, and i truly believe that through the laws of attraction, our experiences with the majority of the people we encounter are guided largely through our own manifestations.

          My two cents. LuvLee.

Have to throw in my spare change as well...I brought a friend with me for her first PEX event and everyone was super nice to her, even the staff. We did have one staffer suggest she get drunk and go home with someone, then hang around her a lot through the evening but a few of us did gently let him know he was barking up the wrong tree and he bounced off with a smile. No issue there. The vibe wasn't quite as natural as the warehouse, but I was really surprised and happy at how good the whole thing did feel. It was a great night!

in my interactions, I found all the staff anywhere from "Strictly business" (but fair) to very pleasant and friendly.

Of course it was a bit of a different feel, but despite what we couldn't control (staff, drink prices, etc), I think for the most part it worked really well.

"i truly believe that through the laws of attraction, our experiences with the majority of the people we encounter are guided largely through our own manifestations." So true.

I was actually stopped in my tracks in the beginning of the night just thinking of how helpful the manager Bob/Robert was along with the big main Security dude with the blue shirt. Both of them helped me from the minute I walked in the parking lot. Bob had a team of 4 dudes carrying barricades out to fence off the fire zone for me. If it weren't for them I would not have had the site ready for when the fire dept. came in for the demo, and that could have messed up fire spinning for the night.

All through the night the staff were friendly, helpful and courteous. I did have a couple of them hit on me, but it was nothing forceful at all - I just giggled and said thanks anyway. To be honest, I think they were all having a really good time there. Additionally, I talked to a few of them who were impressed with the setup we brought and who had never seen some of the stuff we had happening there (kissing booth).

I personally don't have anything to compare it to, because I've never really been to a club, but I loved it at Shampoo, not just for the great space, the great music, the set-up, or all the friends, but also because of the helpful staff with their good vibes.

Can't wait for the next one!!!

As far as the overall vibe, I have to say that no matter where PEX throws it down, it's always an enlightening experience. I don't know how it happens, it just does. This was certainly true for Shampoo too. This Summer is going to be killer!! Flipside in 2 WEEEEEEKKKS!!!!

Yeah. I dunno. I've been to many clubs in Philly and elsewhere and have interacted with many security/bouncers and so far, Shampoo is the only place that has ever hassled me in this way. This isn't the first time either. I was almost ejected from the club about a year ago over false accusations. It wasn't until I mentioned that I was 23 (at the time) that they said "Oh, well that changes things. Move along."

In my experience, the bouncers there overreact and often create lies to support their actions (as they did both this time and last time). I'm sure they're fine people under it all, but most of my interactions with them have been less than amiable. Perhaps there is a reason. Perhaps they do put up with a ton of bull shit every day... But that's no excuse for the rudeness I encountered. It's their choice to work that job and if they don't like the shit they have to put up with, they should do something else. Hell, the bouncers at Shampoo probably put up with fairly little compared to other places I frequent. Their parties consist of goth night (16+) gay night and pop night all of which are quite tame parties. I doubt there are many brawls or guns, ya know? To me, it seems like they are the type of people who want to get in fights but since there isn't much going on in that way on a regular basis (especially with our fluffy peaceful party) they pick a few easy targets and hassle them. Im scrawny and look young so I guess that's just what I get.

Whatever. Maybe I'm just being a bitch about it. Maybe the law of attraction is real and it's all in my head. Or maybe I'm rightfully offended by the way I was treated. Either way, I don't think I'll be attending any more parties (PEX or otherwise) at Shampoo from here on out.

            Lee-great comments. Thanks!

One chat with one of the security peeps revealed the same thoughts as "it's just too quiet of trouble.....makes me uneasy". Monk E and I told him, it's not gonna happen, not that kinda crowd. It's a really rough business and sometimes they jump to the worst conclusion because if they don't it is literally their ass that either gets hurt (usually with no insurance other than basic workman's comp), lose their job, get shit all night.

Not saying there are excuses for real outrageous behavior but I didn't see it at shampoo at all. 10 years ago - hell yeah. Saw it then and vowed not to go back ;-P It was really a pleasant surprise how great the security had their stuff together.

              Hi All,

The comments, observations & experiences regarding security have been great. I think it is going to be more of an education process than anything else. Like Tia said, they need to be educated that we are a respectful community and "aren't that kind of crowd." Once they realize we are a responsible and self policing group, things will only get better over time.

One funny observation I have was we sometimes felt as if we were being observed, more out of boredom than fear anything was going to happen. Kinda like animals in a zoo or fish in a bowl.

Perhaps this thread would be useful for the security people to read, if only for their own customer service feedback.

              Perhaps not.

              Just a thought

I also got the impression that the staff were watching us like a new special on the discovery channel sometimes, especially the people doing some sort of object manipulation :P

I can't say I was really hassled by the security, they seemed to do their jobs, although my girlfriend did overhear them talking contemptously about the party, no real trouble.

None of them were mean to me, although my asshole is still a little sore from the frisking at the door.

Actually - One guy handled my confusion very well. I was hanging out talking to a bunch of people on the first floor, and the whole crowd starts to go through this door. I'm walking with the crowd talking to someone through this maze of hallways to another large room when a security guy just says - you don't have a bracelet sir, sir, you'll have to leave.

I probably should have realized that this wasn't a normal area of the club, but i was rather clueless at the moment. I just said - sorry, I didn't know.

He said it's okay, and allowed me to turn around and go back to where I came from.

Now if this guy was looking for someone to target, I would have been it. With a clueless look on my face, facepaint, and in an area I wasn't supposed to be in - he showed restraint and understanding by not throwing my ass out.

"None of them were mean to me, although my asshole is still a little sore from the frisking at the door. "

Hmmm. This is probably the first frisk I've been through that didn't have an issue. Usually I'm felt up and nearly probed. Wonder if the guys went a little more harsh.
I know I gave most of my stuff to Monk E so it was like airport security for a bit till he could unload but don't think he had any hardcore pattdown either. We both went in and out a few times....usually that means more pattdowns :-)

(Now I'm thinking of when I'd do the door security for several events - hope I didn't hurt anyones ass ;-P)
