Could we decide ahead, on an intersection we want to camp near? I think it would help those arriving later to find us. (And it would be good to give to family in case of emergency.) I just want some wind break (hopefully equals less dust), and preferably lower noise.

Re: location again
Fri, August 17, 2007 - 11:20 PMhere's an alternative: early arrivers scout and claim the site. then, i go over to my ocburner friends at bad idea theater and notify them of our whereabouts. if i understand correctly, we can also register somewhere at center camp or something??? that way, we have two places where someone can check on our location.
another tip i've read: we agree on a street corner where we post a sign that describes our whereabouts. -

Re: location again
Sat, August 18, 2007 - 4:18 PMspark*l, do you have a part of BRC that you prefer? ...a neighborhood? I thinnk we talked about trying to camp next to hushville, but that does stretch out a ways, I believe. Also, when do the crowds start arriving? Is it pretty much backed up at opening at midnight, or do people really start arriving later in the morning? (open to anyone to answer, of course!) -

Re: location again
Sat, August 18, 2007 - 7:23 PMremember, i'm a virgin... but one that soaks in everything she hears and reads, soooo...
i hear the predominant wind is from southwesterly direction... a friend shared that they liked the position of bad idea theatre at 3:00 (3:30?) and boreal because the rest of the camps seem to help serve as a wind break... makes sense to me. if i remember correctly, alternative energy zone (AEZ) and hushville are closer to the southwest of the circle; therefore, more of a direct hit.
i have friends in AEZ, but more friends towards gigsville and bad idea theater and secret camp (right on the circle), so personally, i'd opt for the most northeasterly third of the circle, and not too far from the action, so that walking is an easy option to visit my friends.
all that being said, i'm easy! -

Re: location again
Sat, August 18, 2007 - 9:26 PMI haven't figured out where all the camps are yet, but looking at the legend's "N" arrow, the northern most point of the city is 9:30 -10:00. Is that your understanding also? I think AEZ is between Boreal and Estuary, between 5:00 - 7:00. Has there been a better map released, with Theme Camp placement? wind should hit 4:30-5:00 the least obstructed. ( I have been curious if this plays out as better to be there, or would being blocked by other camps just mean more crap blown into ours?)
OK, we could use a non-virgin's input! -

Re: location again
Sun, August 19, 2007 - 3:04 PMOne option...We can pick a location ahead and just try to get as close to it as possible. If we can't get close to it, or don't like it, we could leave a sign/note/message with the people who are nearest to that location (I'm sure they'd be willing to help out, as its only a few who will come by asking and almost everyone is extremely helpful). You kind of have to just get there, look at the place, and say "I think I'd like to be...here. Or there. The wind/dust isn't much different wherever you are. If there are differences, they are subtle. The prevailing wind only matters when considering which way to place your tent, shade structure, etc. Its really just a "you have to see it" situation. Playa Info is near Center Camp, which will be kind of hard for people to get to when they first arrive. It would mean parking their car somewhere, getting on their bike or walking to Center Camp, finding out where we are, going back to their car, and then finding us. Also, they are only open from 9-6. So I think the "designated tentative location" is a good idea. This is one reason I'm so happy to be caravaning with you two. Picking a camp location all alone is a bit of a daunting task, and will be much easier/more fun with some company! -

Re: location again
Sun, August 19, 2007 - 8:44 PMSounds good to me! So.... do you have a prefered tentative location?
-
Re: location again
Sun, August 19, 2007 - 11:51 PMI think a predetermined location sounds like a great idea! And if it changes, please, please leave some kind of sign, smoke signal to let me know where you are.
I'm flexible and trust those who are going before me to pick a nice spot!
Thank you, ladies!

Re: location again
Mon, August 20, 2007 - 11:22 AMIf I were to just pick, I'd choose Jungle & 3:45, on the outside side of the street. Any agreement/disagreement? -
-
Re: location again
Mon, August 20, 2007 - 2:33 PM3:45 sounds great... why jungle? -

Re: location again
Mon, August 20, 2007 - 2:51 PMI'm fine with whatever you decide on location. Will someone be willing to register the camp location sometime Monday? I know it's a hassle, but what will I do when I get there late Monday and there's no sign of everybody at 3:45? What will the sign be, anyway? Can one of you early birds get a PLAYADES poster up near the road? Thanks. -
-
Re: location again
Mon, August 20, 2007 - 3:04 PMI'll try to get the location posted at Playa Info as soon as humanly possible. I heard they close at 6:00 p.m. though. And if we're not at 3:45 & Jungle, we'll leave some kind of sign/message. I'm still thinking about what to use. Will let you know! -

Re: location again
Mon, August 20, 2007 - 3:21 PMThanks Taygete, that's the best option.

Re: location again
Sat, August 25, 2007 - 11:44 AMHey there ladies. As I am hoping to come up Wed or THursday, (still don't have a ride, aieeee!) Iam hoping the camp will be easy to spot. Can you let me know what to look for? A big flag or something? What colour is your truck Uzzalla? Does anyone know anyone who is coming up late who will be going on Highway 80? -
-
Re: location again
Sat, August 25, 2007 - 3:33 PMthere's another thread that describes our vehicles. i wasn't able to locate my prayer flags. we'll post the sign that tells of our location, and hopefully we'll have enough material to make a sign at camp, but who knows... not the best answer, but during this rush time, that's all i can promise.

Re: location again
Mon, August 20, 2007 - 3:00 PMIts kind of a wild guess, but I think it is the closest-in street where we might find enough space. The closer you get to the center, the more populated it gets. And each year gets more dense. I really like the sound of "Kelp Forest", the next street out. But other than the names, they're all the same. -
-
Re: location again
Mon, August 20, 2007 - 7:11 PMif we *can* get in closer, would you want to?
as far as the sign goes, can we expect a solid signpost at the corner you mentioned? if so, i could bring some sturdy cardboard, and we could sandwich a sign around the post and just drop it to the ground. i already purchased so jumbo sharpies in different colors that i can use to write the info. heavy cardboard, low to the ground, and attached to itself rather than to the signpost *hopefully* means it would withstand the natural and human elements (?) -

Re: location again
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 10:12 AMSure, we can try to go in closer, or go anywhere. Until you Virgins have seen it with your own eyes, you really have no idea...well you might have ideas, but they might be slightly or very inaccurate! So you'll want to take a look around before we settle. The spot I picked is mid-block (3:45) There are signposts at the intersections (a skinny piece of wood, maybe 7 or 8 feet tall, with a not very big sign atop). We can change our direction to: "look for sign on or near Jungle Sign Post at 4:00 intersection". I think that is pretty clear and easy to find. -

Mailbox
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 5:15 PMThis vaguely relates to our location: I read that they like camps to supply mailboxes so as not to vex the poor disgruntled mail people (or some such verbiage). I wonder if anybody has something that could be used for that purpose? I don't seem to. -
-
Re: Mailbox
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 6:47 PMi'm not exactly sure for what purpose this is meant (i didn't even know there *were* mail people)... but how about this:
i have a 10x12x2 inch plastic 'drawer' that we could bungy to something, then label with duct tape and sharpies. mail-er opens the drawer 'up', drops the note in, then drops the drawer back down.
we could even have a list of campmates, and leave a notepad and pen inside for people to write notes to us.
hmmmm... just thought of something: we could just tie a notebook and pen to our camp, and have people write notes and leave it in the notebook. perhaps less complicated? but it all depends on the purpose of the mailbox (see first sentence)... -
-
Re: Mailbox
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 9:59 PMPeople do put up mailboxes, but its only a fun thing to attract mail, notes, poems, gifts, etc. Its nothng close to a requirement. Some are very creative. Our neighbor last year had an amazing sculpture of a penis for a "male" box, it was really something, and they always found interesting stuff in it in the morning! There is an actual Black Rock City Post Office, and they do deliver real mail as well as do all sorts of prankish things. One year, the postman kidnapped a neighbor's garden gnome and left a ransom note. If you go to the Post Office to mail a letter (or even just ask a question) you will be greeted with surliness and hostility until you suitably cajole or bribe them with gifts. There is nothing quite like tthe BRC PO! -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Mailbox
Tue, August 21, 2007 - 11:00 PMThere's also a venture in play to accost strangers with postcards and ask them to write a note to an unknown person, perhaps inviting a visit or something. The postcards are sent through the post office to people all over the playa. Kind of a nice mixer idea. Anyhow, I'd go with that drawer idea. The artwork can evolve. Since we're all ladies, I suppose the answer to the "male" box would be a "female 'box' ", but I don't like to visualize that rendition ...
Whatever!
I do need to exchange mail with my daughter, though. She and her man said I'm not allowed to go to their camp {"Don't call on us, we'll call on you"} Why would they say that?
So I have to mail them.
[or sneak over there and nail them]
sigh -

Sorry to hear about your daughter setting some strict boundaries!
Big hug and more when I arrive!

Re: location again
Wed, August 22, 2007 - 2:00 PMIs there a Playa map on the Burning Man website. I'm having trouble finding it and visualizing the layout. Or did we get a map in our literature?
Jungle and 4:00 for at least some signage! Got it!
I would prefer close enough, but not in the midst of the craziness.
Appreciate all the communication! -

Re: location again
Wed, August 22, 2007 - 2:08 PMHaving troubles pasting the link, but if you go to the Burning Man tribe, it is in their photo gallery, as well as a map with porto-potty placements. -
-
Re: location again
Wed, August 22, 2007 - 3:21 PMkate, if you're having trouble pasting a link from a tribe thread, it's because tribe automatically truncates long urls. the trick to overcome this: click the link, then copy the url from the browser windows address field, *then* paste it into your tribe post. you'll notice that the pasted url will be shortened (again), but at least it will have the underlying code in the link's properties.

Re: location again
Wed, August 22, 2007 - 3:29 PMi saved a large white pizza box... we can write a note with my jumbo sharpies, then seal it around any available signpost (at jungle and 4:00) with duct tape... don't assume it will be posted up high... i'd rather have it sitting on the ground at the base of the sign... more apt to stay put in those winds, although it might produce its own little sand dune!!! -
-
Re: location again
Wed, August 22, 2007 - 3:46 PMI can't remember if its okay to attach anything to the signpost, probably is, I think I remember seeing paper plate sized signs on them, but I could be wrong. We could put it on a stake in the ground right near the signpost if necessary. I'll sure I'll have something that will work.
