Even the schedule was designed to facilitate creativity and fun. Starting at 9PM, each DJ plays 1 40-minute set. At 11PM, they switch to 20-minute sets. The final hour is a three-way tag-team.

Please join us for 1 final installment of one of San Francisco’s most original and liberating events. Last call!

Several months ago I had a CD in the car with all the Depeche Mode albums from 81-86 in the car, and it got me in quite the mood - especially while listening to 'Construction Time Again' for the first time. Now I finally get to play all that DM stuck in my head - I can't wait for Friday!

This month at The Pleasure Principle, we'll have a Black Celebration – all in honor of Depeche Mode. On Friday, March 27th, DJ Prince Charming and guest DJ Tomas Diablo (Strangelove, Rock This Town!, Danse Macabre) will be celebrating one of their most beloved bands, Depeche Mode, all night long. From their Vince Clarke-laden debut, to Music For the Masses, and all the way to Violator, we'll be proving that no one does Synthpop like Depeche Mode. Whether you Just Can't Get Enough or you'd rather Enjoy The Silence, you're sure to hear your favorite Depeche Mode songs along with the best of the darker side of New Wave and Synthpop from artists like Clan of Xymox, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Ultravox, Peter Murphy, The Sisters of Mercy, and many more. Best of all, there's NO cover charge! Why not come on down and treat your feet to a great night of dancing?

Additionally, all proceeds from the night will go to DJ Prince Charming's “Funds for Feathers,” (www.pebby.net) a fundraiser to support Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue (www.mickaboo.org), a Bay Area volunteer-run organization committed to rescuing, fostering, and rehabilitating abused, neglected, injured, and surrendered companion parrots. For every dollar raised, DJ Prince Charming will be matching it. Last month's fundraiser went great, so let's keep up to good work!
If you missed out last month or just want to come back for seconds, you can always check out prior set lists and listen to recordings at www.clubpleasureprinciple.net or join the tribe (see below) for every night's recording. See you there!

There wasn't a massive crowd, but everyone who came had a blast, and we had to kick dancers out at 2am when Catalyst turned up the lights. Just like last year when I did this theme, I felt like the list of songs that I wanted to play was about 10 times longer than the list of songs I actually got to play! Much thanks for Tomas Diablo for joining us to share his views and tunes on love, everyone for coming out to celebrate, and a special thanks to all the contributors to the fundraiser - every drink you bought helped contribute to Funds for Feathers! We earned almost 100 dollars that night, and it will continue for the next few months too. My personal favorite song of the evening was Madness's "It Must Be Love" - I completely forgot about that one!

There was an ongoing discussion I stirred up about how some 'love' songs I think are just about drugs. I think Tomas played what I consider to be the perfect back-to-back drug-love song duo: "Perfect Kiss" and "Lips Like Sugar!" Discuss!

Love is in the air as The Pleasure Principle presents the Night of a Thousand Love Songs! On Friday, February 27th, DJ Prince Charming and guest DJ Tomas Diablo (Strangelove, Rock This Town!, Danse Macabre) will be playing all love songs, all night. Be it good love or bad love; puppy love or deep love; broken hearts or mending hearts; you'll hear what all the best New Wave and Synthpop artists have to say about it. You'll see Depeche Mode's world in their eyes, fall head over heels for Tears for Fears', and sink deeply into Soft Cell's tainted love. You're bound to fall in love with some of your forgotten favorite love songs and walk away with some new ones too.

It's been 25 years since the end of that wonderful year in music, and, tonight, we'll be celebrating its anniversary with music from 1983 and before. Let's remember the good ol' days, "Blue Monday," ( the actual 'blue monday for this year just happened this week! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Monday_(date) - how about that?), and all those great artists who made New Wave on the veritable wild west of music during those years.

This Friday, The Pleasure Principle is ringing in the new year by commemorating the end of a great year of music - 1983 - with the beginning of the greatest music around. DJ Prince Charming and DJ Skip (New Wave City, Temptation) will be celebrating where it all began with the early years of New Wave and Synthpop from 1983 and before. We'll be playing music from greats that helped start it all like Gary Numan, The B-52's, Ultravox, OMD, Joy Division, The Human League, XTC, The Cure, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, Heaven 17, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Visage, The Jam, Adam and the Ants, and so much more as we turn back the clock to 1983. I called the owner in a panic, worried that he didn't know we were on for that night, and, luckily he was just running late.

Thank you, everyone! It wouldn't be much of an anniversary without you guys. Thanks to Skip for joining me for some absolutely great music (oh man, you guys missed out on some great stuff at the end), thanks to everyone for coming to dance, eat cake, and be merry, and thanks, of course, to Catalyst for having us there for two years. I had a wonderful time, and I hope you all did too. The recording had some issues, unfortunately (in my excitement, I forgot to plug the recorder in - it was running on batteries and ran out eventually - oops!), but I'll see if I can salvage some pieces.

Janet Jackson has revealed all about her sexy new lingerie line -- it will be called Pleasure Principle, after her hit 1987 tune, and it will launch in the U.S. in November.

The pop superstar has teamed up with Aussie designer Bruno Schiavi to create the line of bras and panties, and promises women her lingerie will be luxuriously comfortable.

I love records for so many reasons, but, beyond my total bias, there are some records that, for whatever reason, always sound better than their CD counterparts (or the CDs just don't exist!). Some of my favorites to listen to, analog-style:

Wall of Voodoo - Dark Continent: My favorite album ever. Plus, if CDs of it exist, they were made in such a small number as to be collectors' items.
Visage - The Anvil: As above, the only CD's I've seen were going for 100 dollars on eBay.
Depeche Mode - Catching up with Depeche Mode: It just sounds really good, plus the 'Singles 81-85' CD is missing Flexible AND Fly on the Windscreen.
XTC - English Settlement: The original UK version of the record, while capable of fitting on one disc, was split into two so that the luscious sound wouldn't be lost by physically compressing the songs' space on the disc.
Soft Cell - Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret: Maybe the remaster of the CD just sucks, but the record sounds so much better. Plus, when you go to lift the needle after "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye," you feel sad that the record's over.
OMD - Dazzle Ships: Opening the packaging to get to the record is a lot of fun, and the great, sometimes-bizarre sounds of the album just belong on a record.

How about you? What's just better in record form?

In spite of the nasty weather, we had a great showing and a great guest DJ to come together for another lovely night of music. We had a nice dance floor going most of the night until we finally had to call it a night, and I was exhausted the next day from all the dancing.

Keep tuned for February's edition of The Pleasure Principle where, as the day after Valentine's Day, we're doing a night dedicated to the best songs about Love. Puppy Love, Unrequited Love, Forgotten Love, Everlasting Love - you name it, we've got it! We'll have cookies, decor, and our favorite theme-loving DJ, Alex, all on the 15th. See you then!

Heaven did not write down some of his set list, so until I have some time to do an analysis and write up the missing songs, you'll just get a partial set list. The recording, however, came out wonderfully - give it a listen, it may be my favorite so far. There was certainly a good helping of Numan... yum!

--------------------------------------------------------------------

We've had ONE WHOLE YEAR of great music with The Pleasure Principle, every 3rd Friday, and we want to thank you and celebrate the only way we know how - with more great music (and cake!), free of charge! DJ Prince Charming and brand new guest DJ John (New Wave City, Gossip, 1984) will be playing all the best of New Wave and Synthpop from the late 70's through 80's. In addition to playing classic favorites like Depeche Mode and New Order, you'll be dancing to the underplayed heroes of the era like Ultravox, XTC, Soft Cell, Big Country, Heaven 17, Visage, and so much more as we dig deep in our record collections. You're bound to hear the songs you love and walk away with some new or forgotten favorites too. Best of all, there's NO cover charge! Free music and sweets - why not come celebrate with us on Friday?
