Do you think the world is getting worse than past times? Or is it perhaps just that we are now bombarded with 24-hour news channels and access to online news and information constantly? Also, it does seem that we are more open about to talk about formerly taboo subjects.
I was watching the news today and seeing all the stories about tornadoes and storms throughout the US, the cyclones in Myanmar, then thinking about the devastation from Hurricane Katrina and the Tsunami in Asia. At first, I found myself thinking, "Mother Nature is really pissed off." But then I realize this is the first time in history that we've had the ability to learn all of this news so immediately.
The same goes with the stories about child abuse and sex crimes. I still cannot comprehend the monster that was just caught in New Jersey after openly showing his face in video having sex with very young boys. And the man in Austria who kept his daughter, and the children he fathered with her, locked in a basement dungeon for what, twenty-some years? Back in the day, no one ever talked about these things. I remember telling my mother when the perverted old neighbor slipped his hand in my shirt and her response was, "He's a war veteran, he would never do such a thing." She just couldn't accept the idea.
Heck, back in the day, people never even got divorced. I recently worked as a home health aide and my client was 100 years old. Her daughter told me that the mom had been fooling around with another man. She wasn't sure, but she thought the man was probably her own father. She told me that back then, they didn't get remarried. The first husband actually adopted the second man, so everyone could have the same last name. Can you even imagine?
Not long ago, I saw a historical story about George Washington and his supposed extra-marital affairs. The report said that it was unheard of for the news at the time to ever mention such a thing publicly. I believe the same was true even in the time of John F. Kennedy and all of his supposed affairs were kept private. Of course, they probably weren't hounded by paparazzi as we see today, but I still think they had, if not any sense of ethical responsibility, at least they kept thing secret and weren't publicly flaunting their activities.
All of America, perhaps the world, is shocked by the news of the offshoot sect in Texas where Child Services took away all the children in the face of charges that they were forcing teenagers to marry older men. Yes, it is hard to believe in this day and age. But it wasn't that long ago that people were commonly married at 14 or so. Of course, back then, life expectancy was much shorter and people had vastly different expectation of self-determination and romantic love and so many ideas that seemed crazy at the time. Even now, some cultures practice arranged marriages where the parents make the plans and the bride and groom do not have the expectation to meet that special someone, fall in love and then get married.
Okay, so I'm really ranting here. But back to the original question, is the world any worse or are we just more aware of everything? What's your opinion?

Sun, May 11, 2008 - 4:15 PMJust more informed. Child abuse is proven to be passed down to each generation...
Where did it begin?...Adam. -

Re: is the world any worse?
Sun, May 11, 2008 - 11:29 PMI think it's a little of both but more the bombardment of information. We've never had access to all this before and people have never been solely employed to keep the rest of the world informed and in doing so they sniff out everything and anything they can find. These things used to always happen but they were kept private and even if you didn't want them private it was hard work leaking the story, now it's just an anonymous email if you so wish. -

Re: is the world any worse?
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 12:50 AMI think as well that we didn't have competing 24-hour news stations, trying to fill up air time with more stories that would have us glued to our sets. I have been making it a point to express lately when I do not think something is really news. Katrina and tsunamis are in my opinion, certainly news as we may somehow know someone who was killed or we may be able to help by volunteering or donating money. The blow by blow on whether a man had murdered his missing wife in my opinion is not news, but rather it is drama to be injected into my life since it does not affect ym life and there is nothing I can do about it.
More Examples:
Actor arrested in airport for contraband - not news
More illegal pot farms being grown in state parks by armed mexican gangs - news [I go on hikes a lot]
Myanmar opening borders to aid - news [...maybe I can help or maybe my hypathetical friend who is there will get help]
Bloated bodies still line Myanmar river - not news [more sensationalism to draw you to their channel]
Theories around D.C. Madam's suicide - not news

Re: is the world any worse?
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 5:41 AMI'm also amazed at how often the supposedly legitimate news channels discuss tv shows. The only time I can remotely get it is the comedy channel show that pokes fun of all the other shows, but even that is a little too stupid for my taste most of the time.
More to add to your list...
Who got booted from American Idol or Dancing with the Stars - not news.

Re: is the world any worse?
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 8:16 AMI think it is about the same, but now we are media driven. We've had recessions and a Great Depression, wars and celebrties and politicians sleep with each other and die. During the time of these events we didn't have the Web, cable and as many channels.
The sky isn't falling.I have a couple coworkers, who keep bringing up the bad things in the world...world disasters etc, with the "people need to wake up". I know they mean the signs of the Apocylpse....I won't argue the Bible, but blaming the ebbs and flows of the world we live in...on ideas of one belief system seems silly from where I sit. -

On the aPOCKYclypse..
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 8:23 AMI don't know if this denomination [Seventh-Day Adventism] has significant population in the rest of the world, but their roots are in the Millerite movement.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millerites
I love that Doomsday Cults at some point have to say '...um...nevermind....'
I guess it's that or drink the Kool-aid, which I don't love so much.

Thu, May 15, 2008 - 7:03 PMThe one coworker, I believe was brought up Baptist, so that might be the root of that. I almost listed all her faults, but stopped myself....We'll have none of that here.
I will correct my spelling though...Apocalypse. -

Re: On the aPOCKYclypse..
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 9:47 PMHah! Sorry that wasn't even to make fun of a typo, I didn't even notice it to be honest. :) I was just spelling it to be silly.
I should have also been more clear on my random trivia, it was a side note, not necessarily something that was about your coworker.
:) My silliness doesn't oft make sense even enough to be silly. -

Re: On the aPOCKYclypse..
Yesterday, 8:07 AMoh no...i was just taking the opportunity to correct my spelling and say something else lol.

Re: is the world a thing?
Yesterday, 9:48 AMIt's entirely subjective. Statistics don't matter to the soul; one's happiness has to sustain one. *One*. -

"Statistics don't matter to the soul; one's happiness has to sustain one. *One*. "
Yesterday, 11:45 AMI do not agree. We are not a solitary creature by our nature, we are a social creature. We have survived as a species bacuase of aour concern for one another and our ability to work together. Lack of concern for others has resulted in disaster. -

Re: "Statistics don't matter to the soul; one's happiness has to sustain one. *One*. "
Yesterday, 12:51 PMI think that's all tangential, though. My point is that "the world" is an artifact of perception / conscious awareness.
"The world" is alternately a terrifying morass of insoluble problems and/or a madly joyous eternal flower of potential - just depends on what time of day it is and who you're talking to.
Understanding the nature of happiness is tricky: science suggests we are essentially inept at predicting what will make us happy. We're actually *better* at making others happy than we are at maintaining our own state of being (which underscores the issue you're raising, I think)

Re: is the world a thing?
Yesterday, 12:32 PMI don't think it's about the statistics, but the exposure. This constant bombardment from the media must certainly have an effect on our souls. Even for those who are not glued to the television, the news is just insidious. I try to be selective about what I watch and read, yet I know more than I care to know about the celebrities and nonsense non-news being broadcast. Just the other day, I was flipping channels and caught a few seconds of an entertainment show about Britney Spears. Now, I really have no interest in that poor, lost soul, but I still remember hearing the somewhat disturbing story about her mother arranged a date with her as a freshman with a senior who was captain of the football team. Why do I know this? Why am I wasting precious brain space on this nonsense? Nonetheless, it's there and I cannot erase it. -
