I stopped riding commercial aircraft when airport "security" made my wife cry and threatened her.

Also there was the time - soon after they insisted on searching infants, I recall - when they failed to ferret out a guy with a crappy homemade bomb in his shoe.

Watching that clip made my nether pucker. I'd be scared if I was a passenger, no doubt - but were I the *pilot* I'd be a rictus of utter terror. I can all but feel my teeth shattering from gnashing together and gritting harder than they'd ever gritted.

I fly all the time, have to when you live on an island and don't have time in your life for the train, but that really scares me. Still we don't have extreme weather here either ::looks outside at the snow::

That should have been aborted long before he bounced on the runway! There was no reason to attempt that landing, he even scraped the wing, that could have been really serious. What a prat.

Okay, I was all to agree that this guy was a prat, but then I asked my husband what a pilot is supposed to do in that situation (he's an air traffic controller). *Apparently* this is a common procedure, called "crabbing", and is what you *do* if you're landing in a crosswind situation. The pilot angles the nose in, and presumes that when he gets down to 100 feet or so, that the strength of the crosswind will let up, and he'll land just peachily. When I had my honey look at the video, he was all cheering the guy on, until he dipped the wing...then he was a bit "WHOA!". Anyhow, I know that at most major airports there are runways that go in different directions, so I would have thought that he'd have just gone around to a runway that offered an easier landing. According to my honey, it's often a "fuel" issue...they just want to land, as expeditiously as possible.

At any rate, that's pretty scary stuff. Makes you a tad more understanding when they say "weather delay" at Chicago's O'Hare or something <lol>.
