I was bored and watching tv the other night. They finally showed Brokeback Mountain, which I have wanted to catch even though I'm not much of a movie person. I can't believe how disappointed I was. It was sooooo slow and boring. Is it just me?

Re: movies you think you should have liked
Sun, July 20, 2008 - 8:49 AMHeather I got one, but when ever movies come up and I say I did not like this one... I always get the evil eye from the gals and a knowing nod from the guys... I never could get it, could not see any sense to it and it was not entertaining to me....
So once again I expect my house to be T-P'd and flaming bags of dooody on the porch but here goes.... WTF was Edward Sizerhands about.... I do like Johny Depp now but then I thought Ewweee, Now you see his EMO look every where now... but then.... Ewwweee.... -

Sun, July 20, 2008 - 1:17 PMI call this "Naked Emperor Syndrome".
I see it a lot in theatre as well. There is so much "buzz" about a particular film or TV show or play that much of the audience doesn't want to admit they either didn't get it or just plain hated it for fear that they will be considered un-cool. -

Re: movies you think you should have liked
Sun, July 20, 2008 - 1:37 PMI don't know why that's made me think of this but ... Lord of the Sodding Rings. I have had to sit through the extended version, 9 (or is it 12) hours of it. I really couldn't care less about the little Hobbits and that many hours of it I was willing to reach into the screen and give the ring to the big eye myself! -

Re: movies you think you should have liked
Sun, July 20, 2008 - 6:51 PMAzhrde "I hated The Matrix" Yes I can understand that... the first one was a little interesting but not worth the hoopla it got and the following two movies just were terrible, loud silly, pretentious...so on... -
-
Re: movies you think you should have liked
Sun, July 20, 2008 - 7:23 PMwas to smart to see the matrix or lord of the rings...knew i wouldn't like them. however i expected to like jurassic park and was terribly disappointed. -

Re: movies you think you should have liked
Sun, July 20, 2008 - 11:15 PMI watched the Matrix twice before I even had the vaguest idea what was going on and I'm not exactly unintelligent. I know I'm still not getting it fully, which is probably good because it is over-rated tosh.
This may be controversial ... Because the new Indiana Jones film was coming out a while ago the BBC were showing the old films, one a week, every Saturday up until the week of the new release. For some reason I had it in my head that I liked them and they were all great but upon watching them again I realised that I found them truly awful. Weird!

Re: movies you think you should have liked
Sun, July 20, 2008 - 6:48 PMStars wars, (the first) was a little fun, but awful busy and loud.... I didn't see it when it first cam out, but rather after it had been around for a year and was being showed on alternating mid nights with the Rocky Horror picture show down in Mission Beach, Sand Diego....
I went with a neighbor gal on a date and it was her idea to go see it.... Christ I wanted to get up and Run out when the music started and all these people, including her, put there hands in the air and said Feel the Force...! Just like the R Horro show they all knew every line and would repeat them... I had never seen such a thing... I asked her how many times she had seen it and she said 65 times....!
1979 or so I think that would put both of us in our 40's..................! -

Re: movies you think you should have liked
Mon, July 21, 2008 - 5:45 AMWhen I was 12 or 13, Love Story came out. I was enchanted by it because....well, I was 12 or 13.
Also, my sister had the book and it took some coaxing to get my mother to allow me to read it since there was some questionable material in there for a girl that age.
Sometime in my thirties I caught it on TV once and realized how horrible that movie was. So bad that I was actually embarrassed by my former fascination with it. -

Mon, July 21, 2008 - 3:32 PMPlease don't hate me...
Moulin Rouge
I can appreciate the costuming, sets and cinematography, but that's about all... -

Re: movies you think you should have liked
Mon, July 21, 2008 - 8:07 PMI didn't ike Moulin Rouge, but then I definitely have a problem with anything musical. I also hated Titanic, although I never sat through the whole thing. I'm pleased to say that I am one of the few people in the world who made it through life without suffering that particular trauma.
The Matrix was okay, but I don't see how it's worth the devotion given by so many. I think it quite amusing that Keanu Reeves basically plays the same character in every blasted movie I've ever seen. It doesn't matter what he plays, I always hear the "Hey, dude" dude coming out in him, if you know what I mean. -
-
Re: movies you think you should have liked
Mon, July 21, 2008 - 11:42 PMI loved Moulin Rouge but I can absolutely see why any sane person would hate it. Yes, I hated Titanic, didn't we all ... really? -

Re: movies you think you should have liked
Tue, July 22, 2008 - 7:25 PMI refused to ever see Titanic. 1500 people drown in icy water and you make a love story from it? NO. Besides, that f*cking Celine Dion song makes me want to choke a squirrel.
Also, I avoid war movies, especially those about the Viet Nam era. I grew up watching the war unfold before my eyes on the news every night. I have no desire to consider it entertainment. -

Re: movies you think you should have liked
Tue, July 22, 2008 - 9:19 PMAzhrde....1500 people drown in icy water, you are right an absolutely terrible way to come up with a love story... At the very best it should have been about survival and the folly of man to think he can make any thing un************* like unsinkable.......
1500+Celine Dion if we were lucky....

Walter Lord (A Night To Remember) had the best take on Titanic:
"Loved the special effects - hated the story."
Pearl Harbor is the same. Any one of the thousands of actual stories that could have been told that were more interesting why make up a glorified soap opera?
I also hate the fact that far too many take what they see in the movies as historical fact. For years after Titanic teenage girls left flowers and gifts at the grave of J. Dawson in Nova Scotia whose body was recovered after the sinking.
They all thought this was the same Jack Dawson portrayed in the film. -

Wed, July 23, 2008 - 7:20 AM>>I also hate the fact that far too many take what they see in the movies as historical fact.<<
I'll second that idea! It is very troubling to realize that some people take what they see in movies and television as factual history.
Don't get me wrong, I do see a value in historical fiction. For example, I absolutely love the work of Leon Uris. His books are so compelling and bring to life possible characters within the backdrop of real historical events. But I know the difference between fact and fiction. I do not believe there were actual people with these names who lived these stories, yet it makes me feel like I have a better understanding of what it was like for people who really were there.
Of the top of my head, I cannot think of any movies or television programs that do the same, although I would guess there are some out there. But again, the important thing is to separate the understanding of description of experience vs the actual experience itself.

Re: movies you think you should have liked
Wed, July 23, 2008 - 8:00 AMI too refused to watch The Titanic...because the ending had already been given away...the ship goes down.
I think Hollywood has a Lot to answer for rewriting history. The movie Artemesia about a 16th century woman painter, (one of my heroes) was twisted into a sick love story...she was raped & forced to marry in real life.
What was that Celtic smash hit with Mel Gibson a few years ago...? A history buff friend said it was a pack of untruths also...
There should be a law about historical films to make them True...
Grrrr!

Re: movies you think you should have liked
Tue, July 22, 2008 - 7:27 PMthe second Pirates of the Caribean, just too long. All that running around chasing each other on the one island. Trim it up a bit and it would be okay to lead into the third one. Like the first and third of them. Recently saw the extra bit after the credits are done rolling on the third movie. If you havent or didnt know about it, let the credits roll all the way out.
