This is a Call for PUPPETEERS and ANIMATORS (preferably of the manipulated object variety)
to become a part of Drunk Puppet Nite!!
Feb 1, 2, and 3, 2007 in the coolest new venue in Portland
Someday Lounge!!

We're opening up the Portland shows to all interested, up and down the coast, as far as you're willing to travel. (housing not provided, but a few couches can probably be found).
Some of you may not be familiar with Drunk Puppet Nite. It was started by a very hip group of artists in Seattle 7 years ago, and has been featured on Tears of Joy's stage for the last two. As the name implies, it is puppetry for adults, but unlike the name, these evenings of puppetry have been varied in style and content, but of generally high quality.

If you're interested, we're looking for performances of 2 - 15 minutes, which include puppetry, and your own wild and wacky, deep and probing, eccentric and electric way of presenting it. Film submissions also welcome. We will do our best to include as many proposals as possible, and you need not perform all three nights (let us know if you can not perform on any of the dates). Performers will receive a portion of ticket sales as financial stipend.
Our tech will provide basic sound and lighting, if your piece requires familiarity you should bring your own tech.

Come if you can to the Someday Open Stage at 8pm December 27th and January 3rd you can see the space and perform for the open mic audience. Please email Lana if you will be there on one of these nights so you can meet her when you arrive.

RSVP for Drunk Puppet Night by Friday Jan 5th to: lanashively@gmail.com

a. how many pieces you want to perform
b. the duration of your piece(s),
c. which of the three days you are available,
d. the general flavor of the work (for show continuity)
Please get back to me soon, email or call.
For venue information: www.somedaylounge.com

Feel free to pass this info on to those you feel might like to join us!!
Thanks-

The Tragedies Theater Company to Perform The Butler Did It: A Murder Mystery for a Live DVD Recording

April 13, 2006
For Immediate Release
Contact: Dylan Hillerman
(503) 413-9404

The Tragedies Theater Company to Perform The Butler Did It: A Murder Mystery for a Live DVD Recording

PORTLAND, OR - The Tragedies Theater Company will present their original comedy The Butler Did It: A Murder Mystery at the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center on Saturday, May 6, 7:30 and 9:30pm, $5 and Sunday matinee, May 7th, 2:30pm for $3. The show will be recorded live at all three performances for cable television and a DVD.

The Butler Did It was originally performed in January as part of the Epilepsy Foundations annual Out of the Shadows Gala. The comedy features such characters Edgar Allen Poe and Agatha Christie, both of whom suffered from epilepsy.

Kelli Linss, house-scribe for The Tragedies, tells us,“When you take a murder mystery and remove all pretense of mystery or suspense, what you’re left with is pure distilled comedy moonshine – strong, sharp and lethally funny. In a send-up of the traditional British parlour mysteries, The Butler Did It dispenses with the ‘whodunit?’ and leaves only the question of ‘how will he do it next?’ The combination of wry, intelligent dialogue and farcical nonsense make The Butler Did It a hilarious night at the theatre.”

Director and company founder, Brian Linss says, “This show is certainly a departure from our normal sketch comedy roots, but the audience will still be treated to plenty of clever laughs and sly innuendos. Be part of a studio audience as The Tragedies film the show for their debut DVD release. There will be a wine reception beginning at 6:30 included in the price of admission.”

Jordana Barnes of The 3rd Floor says,"The Tragedies have chemistry, fresh ideas and set the stage to make sure you have great night at the theatre. The performers are comedically strong!"

The Butler Did It opens Saturday, May 6th at 7:30 and 9:30pm and admission is $5. There will also be a matinee on May 7th at 2pm for $3. For reservations and tickets for The Butler Did It, call Brian at (503) 367-2100 or email webmaster@thetragedies.com. The Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center is at 5340 North Interstate Avenue.

The Tragedies sketch comedy troupe just put up their first play,
“The Butler Did It: A Murder Mystery”, last Saturday, featuring
characters like Agatha Christie and Edgar Allen Poe; both mystery
writers as well as epilepsy sufferers. You may not have heard about
the show. That’s probably because it was a one-night-only benefit for
The Epilepsy Foundation at St. John’s Park.

It was a blast! We were treated to heaps of praise and
feedback from the audience.

After we bowed and caught our collective breath off the boards, the
Executive Director, Joel Neier, told the audience he had never been to a more
creative fundraiser in his life. After he spoke, Sen. Margaret Carter
took the stage and pleaded, “I’m going to twist your arm a bit up
here…or, what, do I have to fall over?”, and the Senator executed a
perfectly unexpected pratfall. This state senator, with 26 or so
grandchildren, dropped to the floor like a young Chevy Chase to the
roar of laughter and applause. We could only guess where she got the
inspiration (I’m still sore from landing on my ass in my own silly
death scene).

A BIG shout-out goes to Faith Ramos for trusting us and Jordana Barnes
of The 3rd Floor for recommending to us to the Epilepsy Foundation.

If you missed it, don’t freak out! Our play, “The Butler Did It”, will
be expanded and reworked for an October production. We might even be
doing it in Seattle and possibly beyond, if the foundation can cover
it.

In just a few months (April?), we will be returning to our sketch
comedy roots with an as-yet untitled Vaudeville show. That’s right,
old-time variety show featuring all-new sketches from The Tragedies as
well as Vaudeville oriented acts from Portland and maybe elsewhere.
Still looking for a home. We’re closer. We can taste
it!

Troupe regulars Annie Vergnetti, Anthony Cull, Kelly Linss, Brian Linss

Douglas Mitchell, Dylan Hillerman and Virginia Driscoll are slated to
appear in this production, and Brian Linss will direct. Vivian Fiallo
will be bowing-out for a show to play catch-up with her career.

The Tragedies have a website to catch updates about upcoming shows.
http://thetragedies.com.

If you do not wish to receive any more email from The Tragedies, or you
would like to change your address or other settings, email me here and
tell me to buzz-off: dylzone@yahoo.com

FRANKFURTER SANDWICHES (lyrics)

FRANKFURTER SANDWICHES
Joanne & The Streamliners

Every night he brings me
Frankfurter sandwiches
Frankfurter sandwiches

Ah his baby loves those
Frankfurter sandwiches
Frankfurter sandwiches

He tried to win me with flowers
All kinds of sweetness
`Til he found out his baby's weakness

Every night I whisper
Thanks for the sandwiches
Thanks for the sandwiches
But he feels there's something wrong
Instead of me billing and cooing
All I keep doing is chewing
Frankfurter sandwiches
Frankfurter sandwiches
All night long

Since the world began
The girl expects the man
To bring her tokens of his love
Some bring bags of gold
Their lady loves to hold
And jewels bright as stars above

But it seems my ideals are much higher
So here's how people bills by heart desire
furter sandwiches, furter sandwiches
furter sandwiches, furter sandwiches

I really don't care for candy
Ice cream and custard
But how I love hot dogs with mustard

Every night I whisper
Thanks for the sandwiches
Thanks for the sandwiches
But he feel's there's something wrong
Each time he starts poppin the question
I'm too busy digestin'
Furter sandwiches, furter sandwiches
All night ….
Frankfurter sandwiches all night long

"The Code of the Pole"

Just an update on flyer coverage:

So far we have covered Division, Hawthorne, and NW 23rd and 21st (as
far as I know). Please let us know if anyone has covered any other
areas. We do want to get Alberta, Belmont, Broadway covered if we can.

I have run off a stack of handbills which I will hand off to whoever is
around at the VC on Thursday at 7pm. (I can't guarantee that I will be
available to hand them out though.)

As an interesting side note about putting up flyers, as I was doing NW
21st I ran into a guy that does flyers as a job, hired by venues like
Doug Fir. He goes out 3 times a week, and has very clear ideas about
what is viewed as "fair" flyering and what is not. At one point he even
used the term "the code of the pole;" I shit you not. Yeah, what a
dork. Anyway he was nice to me as I seemed to be observing the sacred
code, but he told me that he (and others like him) will rip down posters
if they are haphazardly placed (i.e. not observing the "patchwork of
the pole," I shit you not) or covering up flyers for events that haven't
taken place yet, or are the only flyers on that pole for a certain
event. "People have realized what a power I am out here." Yeah. Anyway,
just wanted to let you know that those losers are out there a lot more
frequently than we are, and will tear our shit down if they don't think
we're playing fair.

Take that as you will. Now excuse me while I go implement the code of
my own pole.

t

Freecycle Anyone?

I have a suggestion.

There is an online group called "Freecycle". They're a networking website for free crap. If you need something, you post your need and people answer. Likewise if you need to dump something that you don't want to sell, you post the item, people contact you and make pick-up arrangements. Its a sweet idea and I figure it could be really cool if we start collecting a theater wish list and begin collecting right away!

Just an idea for the day.
Stephen's Necrophabulous Letter

Friends,

As some of you know, I am a member of Portland-based sketch-comedy
troupe The Tragedies, and this coming October -- just in time for Halloween -- we are having our "Necrophabulous" show -- 75 minutes of (slightly)
morbidly themed humor.

Shows will start at 11:00 pm Friday and Saturday nights for two weekends: Oct 14-15 and Oct 21-22. Tickets can be reserved by calling 503-367-2100. Tickets are $10, or $7 with student ID. The venue is Theatre! Theatre!, located at 3430 SE Belmont.

The show is screamingly funny (no pun intended and I mean it most
sincerely). I hope you all can make it. Also, PLEASE spread the word
around to ANYONE you think might be interested, either because they
know me or because they like sketch comedy. (Patrice, Mo, Stephanie, in
particular this means you.)

I have CC'd stage manager and fellow cast member Dylan Hillerman; if
you reply to Dylan letting him know whether you have any objection to being added to our email list, we can let you know of any last-minute changes (presumably there will be none) to the information above, and alert about upcoming events and shows.

I look forward to seeing you there!
