Our Gardener

This guy truly sucks.

1. He killed our rose bushes. last spring, he cut them down to short stumps - maybe 12" high. He said it was supposed to keep them healthy, by pruning like he did. They never came back. I don't think he realized that you cut them back at the END of the season, not the start

2. At Christmas, he threw down grass seed and then a light layer of soil and put a $300 bill in our mailbox. Firstly, the seeding was not approved nor did we ask for it - he did it because he thought we needed it. Second, he did not till the soil to loosen the hard ground,,,so we ended up with new grass that sloughed off once we walked on it.

3. We spent a bit of money to clean up tha back bed and lay down red mulch. His idea of upkeep was to come into the back and use a high powered leaf blower which did nothing but kick up dust all over the place. He does not remove dead leaves nor does he pull weeds. We asked him to NEVER come into our yard again and I just kicked him out a moment ago.

4. He does not prune the birds of paradise so they look like crap and are close to death.

5. He laid down new mulch in the front flower beds and did not even bother to move the hose first so the hose was covered in mulch.

The sad thing is that our landlord continues to pay him......which means we pay him because part of our rent goes to the gardener.

He so sucks

red mulch?! if you're talking red cedar mulch then cool, but red dyed mulch is total party foul.
i used to landscape. the dyed stuff degrades too quickly and is kinda tacky. red cedar/cypress both last a few seasons.

Not the dyed stuff. Our friend who was visiting last year and is also a landscaper, chose it for us.

Did you tell your Landlord what he was doing?

If he's not taking care of stuff and screwing things up then the landlord should know and get another gardener. Especially if he's randomly leaving a 300 buck bill in your mailbox. I'd have sent the 300 bucks to the landlord and let HIM argue whether you needed the grass seed or not. If he's paying it - it's his problem. Not yours.

The landlord refused to pay it. We now only need an interim gardener as when our friend comes back to LA (this time for good) He will be taking over the gardening himself.

The problem is just that this guy sucks and he will be replaced. Looking forward to the day when he gets fired

Since it is a rental property and your landlord pays the gardener, by law he is required to pay ALL the bills, including the unasked for $300.

He never asked us to pay the bill. As it stands, a specific amount of what we pay in rent goes towards the gardener - its the same every month, if we subtracted that amount from our rent, we would end up being responsible for it. So, that being stated, we are indeed the ones paying for the gardener and we have a say in what gets done and how it gets done.

Our landlord would never ask us the pay that $300 nor would we ever offer. If he wanted a large service performed, it would be extra money out of his pocket, not ours.
