Apartment Living

So I guess they are tuning my apartment into condos.

In doing so they have ass raped us 3 ways from Sunday. By raising rent, non stop contractor inspections with less then 24 hours notice, and general annoyances

The latest bullshit stunt they pulled, was a days notice to remove my pet rats from the apartment or we will be asked to leave.

We are planning on moving anyway, so I don't think it will be a huge issue.

What sucks is the fact that you live in the illusion of a home. I guess I am new to the insane bullshit that landlords pull, but it just blows me away that they can do slmost anything they want..

I have heard a few stories from friends regarding their horror and apartment living.. and it's scary out there

Anyone agree?

Landlords often operate on the assumption that you will do what they want (regardless of the legality of the issue) for fear of losing your lease. This happens in houses as well as apartments BUT it is far worse in apartment living.

I would check the legality of any action these slimes are taking. I don't think he can demand you to remove the pets if your lease allows them.

Do a search on this.....if you are in rent control and they ask you to move, in many situations, they are required to pay relocation fees.

Bottom line......landlords CANNOT do whatever they like. They just think they can because most people do not understand their rights as renters.

The valley is not rent controlled. While it is LA County, it is not LA City and does not have the same fair housing laws (lived there for many, many years).

Legally, he cannot ask you to remove a pet if you previously had permission, unless it is causing damage.

Legally, he cannot come into your home w/o a full 24 hour notice unless there is an emergency.

However, it hardly matters b/c there are plenty of things they can legally do to get you out if they don't like you and w/o rent control you're pretty much screwed.

I didn't have them when we moved in, so "technically" they aren't on the lease..

Doesn't matter. If the lease does NOT say "No Pets" then they can't force you to get rid of them.

Actually, there are a few exceptions of rent control in the valley - a friend of mine actually fell under rent control here in SFV on a technicality. Still though, there are always laws to protect the renter no matter where in LA you live.

We were asked to move on a whim by new owners that purchased our property at an auction. Unfortunately, there were no laws in place to protect us but we still managed to get a relocation fee - I'll spare the details but there are ways to creatively get what you need by striking a mutually beneficial deal with a landlord without conflict. Its not what you say but how you say it that gets you what you need in these situations.
