"Politics is the art of controlling your environment." Hunter S Thompson
Hunter loved politics even more than he loved drugs, he was a self professed "political junkie" and if you haven't taken the time to read Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72 you don't know a damn thing about American Politics and should honestly be ashamed of yourself for being in Bat Country.
That said, politics is the framework of the American Dream. This nation exists based partially upon our forefathers dream of democracy and the right to vote. (that and the fact that some wealthy slaveowners didn't want to pay to taxes but I digress...)
Why this rambling email? Well, the fact that we have become a sizable camp with many interests and the potential to rule the Playa this year brings about some questions. How should we go about forming this beast? There are 3 choices.
1. The Big Government approach: We all pay $20 in camp dues to a later to be named treasurer.
Pros: Easy to implement, allows everyone to contribute at the same level. Camp infrastructure will be paid for by all.
Cons: Feels like taxes, Hunter didn't like taxes. Hard to know where the money's going, arguments may come about on funding. Being a treasurer sucks.
2. The Patronage approach: Various camp projects will be listed on the Bat Country website and you will have the opportunity to support them (through Paypal or hand to hand) as you see fit.
Pros: Allows more interaction between project creators and participants. (exp1. Ed wants to make a cool shower, 20 other people want to help/give some cash for the shower. shower gets built)
(exp2. Tim McIlvain wants to build a 40 chamber beer bong, only Tony thinks this a good idea, they find the money themselves)
Allows for greater contributions to bigger projects if someone finds it worthy. More American, less socialist!
Cons: Requires more work and effort from more individuals. Means some projects may not get done if not funded
3. The law of the jungle: No organized way of collecting funds. We are all small islands in a big sea together. VERY Radical Self Reliance.
Pros: You keep your money
Cons: You're on your own as far as organizing and getting projects together.
Now I will ask you to do your civic duty and VOTE!
Go to this link: www.zoomerang.com/survey.zgi
and make your choice.
The poll will be up for a week and there will be no more votes tallied after 1:00 PM EST Friday, March 7th.
I expect there to be a hearty debate, some lobbying, illegal contributions and sex scandals
Results will be posted then for all to see.
I thank you my fellow americans and Hunter thanks you.
Peace,
Kip
