Hey folks,

I have just relocated back from Wilmington NC where I lived for three years.
I'm currently living in Hampton and working in Norfolk (until the office I'm in
moves to Hampton).
I have been playing Doumbek, Frame Drum, Santoor and a few other
instruments for a number of years now and would like to find others here to
collaborate with in a live music setting with melody instruments, a small drum
circle environment, recording, or whatever else anyone here is into :-)
Here are some links for music I've written:

www.soundclick.com/ericjblohm
www.myspace.com/thetaqasimtribe

And the obligatory Facebook link:

http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=697445118&ref=profile

While in Wilmington, I had the pleasure of working with some truly gifted and special people.
Vatra Gitana (Bellydance troupe)
Cape Sphere (Fire and Juggling conglomeration)
Sofa King Naughties (Burlesque troupe)
Fire and Drum Jams at the Juggling Gypsy on Thursday nights.

We did plenty of live shows and I would like to find some similar activites here.
Is there a burn community here? I know there are burners about these parts,
but is there a place they gather?

Looking forward to replies, and/or feel free to contact me at:

ejblohm@ec.rr.com

Namaste and Bright Bleesings,

Eric

Selling Bellydance Items in VaBeach on Saturday... (sorry for cross-posting)

Hello all!

I am going to be moving soon, so I'm trying to downsize my wardrobe a bit... I'm going to have a booth at the Princess Anne High School Flea Market (in Virginia Beach on Virginia Beach Blvd) this Saturday,June 20th from 8am-2pm, selling not only a few of my costume pieces such as skirts, tassel belts and pantaloons (which are mostly ATS and tribal fusion style) but also costume making supplies such as metal coins and yarn. If you are a plus size dancer, in particular, I might have something you'd like! Trust me, I know how hard it can be to find stuff!!

Aside from the bellydance stuff, I'll also have a bunch of awesome vintange scarves, gently used plus size clothing (size 14-20), and handbags - as well as a few random other things.

Anyways, I just wanted to let y'all know about the bellydance costume items I'll have - they'll be PRICED TO SELL! Hope to see you there!

BALKANIZE! IS RICHMOND, VA'S ONLY OLD WORLD TURKO-BALKAN FOLK MUSIC ENSEMBLE.

We play acoustic folk dance and belly dance music from Albania, Armenia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Syria & Turkey using a combination of Western & traditional Eastern European folk instruments.

We are currently auditioning for additional MALE and FEMALE VOCALISTS.

A lot of passion for & a little bit of knowledge of traditional Balkan, Turkish and Near Eastern folk music is a non-negotiable requirement!

We are looking for women with strong singing voices, creativity, maturity, responsibility, independence, open-mindedness (especially with regard to the Macedonian Question), a desire to put in a little hard work, & a willingness to sing in many different languages. Knowledge of basic music theory and / or an ability to play a musical instrument are great but certainly not requirements.

BALKANIZE! rehearses for several hours every Sunday at 1pm. We tend to do live performances every ten weeks or so, and we are currently recording and mixing our first CD.

If you are interested or need more information, please contact Geoff at balkanize@verizon.net. Also, please visit our web sites at www.balkanize.net and www.myspace.com/balkanize for a better idea of what we're all about.

The Accidental Circus in Richmond!

Re-united! The Accidental Circus:

* Richmond's own Paolo Garbanzo, Official Jester of England,
* Mab Just Mab, DC's Own Sideshow Girl, &
* The Mezmer Society of Asheville, NC.

Join The Accidental Circus for an evening of Darwinism in Action & Luscious Cabaret.

Friday, April 10th - doors open at 7:00
Art 6 Studio - 6 East Broad Street

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door and can be purchased at http://mabjustmab.com/concessionstand/tickets/

The Mezmer Society demonstrates to the general public that, after a 60 year hiatus, it is once more permissible to dance to an accordion. Artistic collaborators August Hoerr and Onca O'Leary are hard-riding highwaymen of mayhem, spreading the Mezmer gospel throughout the States. Zany bellydance antics, torchsongs, and sinister accordionism are blended at high speed into a tall, cool, glass of delicious and intoxicating performance. Great for geeks, goths, and anyone who wants extreme festivity.

Mab Just Mab is a one-woman sideshow extravaganza of Things Not To Do: walking on glass, swallowing inappropriate objects, letting strangers tie her up and watch her attempt escape. Warning: this wild-woman will literally say and do anything to entertain you...

Defying both Death and Darwinism with knives, fire and extreme audience participation, Paolo performs year-round for crowds all over the US and Europe. He has been a member of the famous Flying Karamazov Brothers, been given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Juggling Association, and is the first American ever to win the titles Jester of England and Official Jester of Muncaster Castle.

Collaborators since 2002, these world travelers are once again coming together for a shared billing right here in Paolo's own hometown. This show promises danger, humour, beauty and song all in the first act. Bring your loved ones to dazzle them. Bring your enemies because, well, anything is possible when 5 knives are in the air...

Trance Essentials Class in Norfolk

I've had a few people in the dance community ask me about my Trance class so I wanted to put up some information about it.

I have gone ahead and posted an agenda calendar for the month of March on my myspace page ( www.myspace.com/madamegenisis ) for the Trance Essentials class. This is an ongoing class that will just continue to progress for the next few years. Students can jump in at any time without any problems or catching up to do and this class is not geared towards the lowest level of experience. We'll be covering different subjects every week and building up from there to create a healthy and functional body of knowledge and experience for each student to take home and apply in their own lives.

This month we're covering:
March 5th - Intense Percussion
March 12th - Effective Monitoring
March 19th - Italian Chant
March 26th - Chant of the Greek Underworld

Come check it out, your first class is free.

Harvest Faire 17th-19th in Newport News!

Nobody ever posts this event but its annual, they do it the third weekend of October every year for the last 14 years. Harvest Faire is a little three day Renaissance Faire held at Mariners Museum Park. Its a non-profit charity event so all the proceeds go to charity. There are a lot of dancers from the immediate and surrounding area performing over the course of three days. Its a great place to meet new people and find good deals on pretty costuming bits. The park is kid friendly, there's an Urchin's Castle and lots of kids games. This year there are several Medieval and Renaissance plays going on throughout the weekend, live music and all kinds of stuff (On four different stages!).

Its cheap to get in and if you decide to camp then there's a late night drum and dance session to get in on.

Come check it out on www.Harvest Faire.org

Oh yeah... and yours truly will be dancing there on Saturday and Sunday. Whoohoo!
Must Have Business Cards!

Once again I need people's business cards! Seriously... just give me a nice little stack of them so that I can hand them out to people when they ask about classes. Spoony don't teach but I keep bumping into droves of people who want to learn. If there is some kind of dance event coming up where you people are going to be en masse then please let me know and bring some extra business cards. I'll be at the Alps Cafe on Friday night so that would be a great place to meet up.
Zills:
Aradia will teach the different zill patterns for Oriental

trial class

Hello,

My name is Janita James, and I attend Hampton University. I am the NAACP Health committee co-chair and I am having a follow-up event from my seminar on Healthy Living which is focusing on the importance of maintaining a good health by being active through exercise and healthy eating. The event is called Free Yourself: Exercise to a New Healthy Life. Which the purpose of this event is to show that you don't have to exercise by working out in the gym or by walking around the track everyday, but you can make exercise fun by joining a self-defense class, joining a class emphasizing on stretching like Yoga or Pilates, or even joining a dance class like Belly Dancing. So, I was wondering if you would like to present a trial class for my event. Because there are a lot of girls I have been talking to about this event that when I threw at them some different exercise options, belly dancing was the one most favored. Also, I have taken a trial of belly dancing before and I loved it. So, if you were able to come I believe there would be many ladies that would be interested in belly dancing as a routine thing and maybe might be interested in signing up with your class. The event is held on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at 6pm- 8pm in the Student Center Aerobics room on my campus of Hampton University. If you are interested in participating, let me know as soon as possible. You can contact me by this e-mail address or by calling my on my cell phone number (321)-274-2626. Again, thank for you patience.

We're doing it again! The second annual B4B hafla will be held at Beijing this year.
Please feel free to forward this message to friends, family, etc...:

Bellies for Breasts, a team of Middle Eastern dance students who support the Y-ME Walk to Empower, will be hosting a hafla ("party") on Sunday, March 16 from 3 to 6 PM at Beijing Restaurant on Rt. 3 in Fredericksburg (5030 Plank Rd Fredericksburg, VA 22407
(540) 785-0838).

Tickets will be $10 in advance ($12 at the door, as space allows) and will benefit Y-ME (www.y-me.org). Admission includes an "all you care to eat" buffet. There will be open dancing, drumming, raffles and door prizes as well as a cash bar. Contact Rajni / Jen if you need tickets!

If you want to share your dancing, just let me know and we'll allot a time for you. Drummers and musicians are welcome as well. And rumor has it that we'll have a special guest hosting a drum workshop to kick off the hafla! Chip from Ch'ville has offered to teach dumbek basics to those who are interested -- more details about that part soon!.

Thanks!

The workshop will take place at the Colonial Heights Community Center, 157 Roanoke Ave. There will be a hafla at 7:30.
email Ann for more information: rmelliotte@verizon.net

Workshop Topic:

Sassy Combinations to Spice Up Your Dance
Students will start out drilling movements and working on core conditioning. The movements will be used to create fun and sassy combinations that can be used to enhance any dance style. Combinations will be geared toward intermediate dancers, however modifications will be added to challenge advanced dancers.

hope to see some of you guys there!

ps. If there are any strictly tribal girls who would like to attend, let me know and I can include some stuff that would be appropriate for tribal fusion.

Hello, everyone!

I just wanted to drop a quick line and introduce myself...I'm Rebecca, and I'll be moving to the Norfolk area from NC around the summertime. I've been dancing tribal for the past year and I'm totally in love with it! I was hoping there was a BD community to be found around there, and I'm glad I've found y'all! I'm interested in learning more, getting started in performing, and all that. I suppose my main contribution to the group would be sewing experience..I've been sewing for about 20 years now, and have done work in costume shops, etc, and am working on building some costume pieces for myself.

Howdy to all, and I'm looking forward to finding a new dance home!

Just a reminder that the early bird special for the Issam workshops ends January 11th. These workshops are all new material from the February 2007 workshops.

WHEN: January 26th 2008

WHERE: Virginia Youth Symphony Orchestra
2618 Colley Ave Norfolk, VA 23517

COST: $35 per workshop (Before January 11th)
$45 per workshop (After January 11th)

About Issam Houshan

The union of music and movement is the essence of dance. The union of a musician and a dancer to create a seamless artistic expression is the ultimate manifestation of such a union. Issam Houshan does exactly that. Call him the “Wassan Pharaoun,” “King of the Drum,” or “Mr. Magic Fingers” and you only tell the half of it. His connection to the dancer is the essence of his magic, a merging of egos serving a mutual and identical goal. Issam is now recognized as the ultimate master of this art. An international music star, his past credits include touring with Sting in 2000, performing at the Grammys on the hit single Desert Rose, as well as performing and recording with countless Arab stars. In addition, he has toured with the Mile Copeland-produced Bellydance Superstars, the world’s premiere professional touring bellydancer performance group since 2003, with whom he has appeared in over 1000 shows in 16 countries over the past three years.

A highly accomplished percussionist on assorted Arab hand drums, Issam was formally trained at the Damascus Academy of Music and is the only remaining disciple of the legendary Arab drum master Mahmood Salahadeen. An accomplished and sought-after music instructor, he taught at the Damascus Music Institute for nine years and continues to teach workshops and private lessons around the world. Unequaled in his field, Issam is known by fellow Syrian musicians as the Wassan Pharaoun (Pharaoh of Rhythm) and his al assaben al Sahriha (magic fingers) are currently insured for 10 million dollars (1 million each).

Anybody want to go to The Wave in Norfolk on the 18th? It's a holiday for me so I want to go out dancing and binging on Red Bull into the wee morning hours. It would be a good time to bring out your Holiday Gothy Spirit. I'm making myself a little white Santa hat just for the occasion. *grins* It's an open invitation so if you want to go I'll see you there! I'm going to try to drag some of my other reclusive dance buddies out there. Go bust a Gothy move!

I have a cold today. :-P
I'm not really feeling like doing anything major so I'm taking the next couple of days to work up the written part of my 2008 Press Packet. :-P Ooooh fun stuff! *chuckles*
What do you guys think of including a comparative rates write up? Anybody else include one in theirs? (Not to worry, I'm pretty darned sure I work with a different market than other dancers in this area so there's no conflict of interest.)
I don't like wasting time so I'm bumbed about being sick right now. The cold medicine makes it hard for me to do any creative writing and I'm not inspired enough to do any sketching. What are some constructive things a dancer can do while sick? Or do you just sit back and accept defeat?

As you can see from the new pics in the tribe album, a few of the locals on this tribe were at the Rachel Brice workshop yesterday. Three hours of fabulousness! My thighs are so tired and sore today. Not bad on arms, I'm surprised, I thought I'd be sore through my shoulders too. Anyway, good times. BDSS last night was excellent. Mardi, Zoe, Rachel, Kami, and Moria were fabulous, Sonia is a truly gorgeous dancer, Jillina is eternally amazing. It was a great show.

Harvest Faire Review

This Harvest Faire was actually really cool for me. It was the first faire I ever did where I wasn't scheduled to dance as a main performance. I got to get in for free because I'm a groovy reenactor, gotta love those perks. My only obligation was to walk around in garb, drum a little, dance a little and pose for pictures. Oooooh twist my little arm...! This allowed me to hang out with Carmen and Rose off and on all weekend at "Ye Olde Day Spa."

Friday Night we saw Isis Rising do a grand goldie Cabaret performance that featured Isis Wings, Scimitar Work, a mock Zar, some beautiful choreography and a solo by Janeeda herself. It was a nice warm night, not like it has been some years where we dancers have shimmied to keep warm behind the stage. The costuming, music, lighting and theatrics we're all very nicely done. Some of the kids in the audience pulled some stuff on the side lines that was really not cool. I think they were the children of some of the dancers and they were a little disrespectful of stage dynamics... but they're kids... what can ya do? I enjoyed the dancing and it was fun to actually get to do that for a change.

On Saturday I think one of the troupes scheduled to perform was a no show. Im not certain about that but that was the rumor. Saturday I found myself dressed to the nines in my little blue and white gypsy ensemble, I have since termed this costume the "Upside-down Cup-Cake Costume," because it consists of two 25 yard skirts layered on top of one another with both tucked into the hips of my belt for that extra poof effect. I wandered around drumming, singing and looking ravishing... Oh such a hard life...! *Mock Faint* Myself, Teleiia and Valkyrie offered to improv for a bit that afternoon so Bear, the sound guy, turned on some almost danceable ambient music. It was cool... very ephemeral but I'm a much more energetic dancer than I think he realizes. I needs to bounce Mr. Soundguy! I needed to get a few Turkish hops out of my system by the time we got done, I did a few off to the side which made local dancer, Amber, chuckle a little bit. I aims to amuse! (Pardon my poor grammar... I've been reading those kitty cartoons lately which just destroy all good syntax.)

My local dance buddies should note that I had the occasion to plug a few instructors. I need to keep a stock pile of instructor business cards on my person at all times. "I don't do classes. Where do you live? Oh! Well you're in luck because _______ teaches out there and she is an excellent instructor." I keep envisioning these people coming up to some of the instructors I recommend with my little note cards that read things like, "Chelydra. Egyptian Cabaret and Folkloric. Excellent Instructor! Choreography! (Insert website/contact info" (Seriously guys... give me some business cards, I have pretty hand writing but it's not THAT pretty!

Desert Wind came out looking sharp in green and black. It was kind of a neat little belt buckle and beads type costume style. I would call it Tribaret which makes sense given their solid background in Egyptian Cabaret. I overheard someone in the audience give kudos to Johara. ;-) She said, "She's my favorite dancer in Desert Wind." I thought that was a cool little tid bit so I wanted to pass it along. I'm a big fan of zill work so dancers who give some good zill love always get high marks from me. Desert Wind also has an Urban Tribal company sister troupe called Bast who worked a couple numbers in there. One was a choreography by Rachel Brice whom I heard somebody in the audience state that it was actually written by Mardi Love... I haven't a clue but wanted to throw it out there just in case. I like responsible reporting so when a dancer or company performs a routine that was written by somebody else, I like to see them give credit where its due. Good job for that. ;-) The choreographies were neat and clean, it was a cute show. The lighting got kinda dim at one point but that got fixed. (Darn setting sun! How dare it!) So good job guys!

I know the main stage performers got some Moroccan chow out of the deal but I can't report on that since I didn't get to have any. Which is actually okay by me... it wasn't vegetarian. :-P Carmen hooked me up with some Mediterranean vegetarian yummies later which made me so happy I actually danced a little. I was all over those dates, olives, feta, dolmades, wine and baklava for dessert. Like I said... being a dancer is a torturous, horrible existence... *burp* Hehehe.

Saturday night there was a lovely drum circle at which I had the occasion to do a little trance dancing at the behest of a buddy and former troupe mate. I changed into my normal clothes for that because I had a feeling that I was going to end up trancing and on that surface it would have meant dancing on my knees and back. (Which it did... I'm so predictable.) I didn't do any drumming or singing at the circle that night but I did my dancey thing and had a good time. Rose tried to dance a little bit. One day this event is going to become more reenactment oriented and I think we'll be seeing those changes sharply within the next year. I can't wait to see that! I think this was probably the last year that I could expect to do any trance dancing without people calling 9-1-1! *chuckles*

On Sunday I looked around and discovered that I was the only M.E. artist doing anything at the fair and damn my garb was gorgeous! I was not slowed down in the slightest! I kept up my drumming and dancing schitck in my now even poofier costume. I decided when I woke up Sunday morning to add another skirt to my cup-cake ensemble turning me into even more of a Cup-Cake Princess. Aaand for S&G's I added a white and gold turban. It's a good day when you wake up and tie your turban on without a mirror and you do it right the first time! Oooh aaaah!

I had a great time, saw a lot of familiar faces and had much occasion to dance, make music and hang out with people all weekend. I would like to see more dancers get into the reenactment spirit next year. Get thee some garb! I'll try to make it out again next year but even if I don't... I hope you guys will check it out yourselves. Dress up! Go! Dance! A buddy of mine filmed me goofy dancing for about 30 seconds, I've asked him to post it to youtube so I'll pop a link if/when I get it. I don't know if anybody filmed the other troupes but I'm sure somebody had to get pictures. Thanks for the great entertainment all you local dancers who entertained me. ;-)

Yours in the Dance,
~*Genisis*~

Hey Girls,
I just joined this tribe today so here's my introduction for those of you who don't know me too well. You can call me Gen if you want. I'm a dancer of 14 years from California. I have two babies... well I guess since they're both walking they're not really babies... more like a matching set of mischief in diapers. ;-) I have a military hubby who is a musician, he plays guitar and sings a lot of folk music and opera.
I got my start dancing at Ren Faires and with the SCA in California so reenactment is really my thing. I used to teach classes out in this area but I haven't run anything serious in a while. I used to be the Co-Director of Gypsy Spirit/Gobekli Tepe but as of today I am just a soloist! Yaaaay! My schedule just got too busy so I ended up having to take myself out of a lot of things. Right now my major project is seeing my first book through the publication process. I'm a bit behind schedule with book number two already which is why I had to step back from dancing in a troupe. Right now I am ready to embrace the sweet taste of freedom, get my buns into a few workshops and intensives and enjoy dancing at my own pace. I've always been a bit of a recluse where the community is concerned but I like to try to make it out to at least one other dancers show per month. If you see me then just say hi. I'm shy around new people but I have a good sense of humor.

Lets see... time to fill in the details...
I can do both cabaret and folkloric dance. I'm not too big on ATS but I enjoy experimental and fusion styles when I feel inspired. I prefer Turkish and Greek fusion Orientale dance to Egyptian but I work with a pretty solid Mediterranean base flavor. I often get confused with Flamenco fusion dancers but I am by far more Grecco-Italian. (I enjoy ribbing Egyptian dancers a lot, its friendly... sort of.) I love to zill and experiment with different zill techniques. I like to thumb my nose at physics where scimitar work is concerned. I can drum and sing a few M.E. folk songs passing fair. I actually do a bit better with Italian music and I luvs my sistrum and tambourine. I am also a seasoned ecstatic dancer and the creatrix of the Ecstasia discipline of Transcendental dance.

Thats me in a nut shell.
If you see me out in the community I'm really easy to recognize, I'm the chick wearing white all the time. Nice to meet you guys. :-)

Taaj's Teaching Biography follows:
Taaj began teaching after one year of lessons. Her classes have always been a reflection of her passion and knowledge. In the beginning, she was American style and did lots of props and choreography. She evolved to include folkloric styles, then as her understanding of Middle Eastern culture and music grew, her teaching changed to become more authentic.
As Taaj's students became more interested in developing professional skills and teaching themselves, Taaj's teaching changed again and incorporated more structure and outcomes based instruction. Her goal was for her students to set and achieve definable goals. She didn't want them to simply think, "I am good enough to be a professional." She wanted them to know if they were good enough and have some way of objectively measuring that.
This has resulted in Taaj producing 16 award winning students, with 37 trophies in 5 contests from 2002 to 2006. Taaj no longer teaches weekly classes, but you can benefit from her knowledge by taking this workshop, or lessons from a Certified Belly Dance Trainer (or you can become one!) Taaj also created a beginner level training DVD, which will be for sale today, to help her students practice her technique at home.
I'm also planning on going to the Neptune Festival this weekend. I understand Chandani and crew are supposed to be in the parade. So am I going to get to see some of you out there?

There don't seem to be any tribes for the Hampton Roads area dancers to keep up with the local happenings, so I thought I'd start one. Tribal, cab, whatever floats your boat, post about it here. Your classes, performances, interesting things going on, places to shop in Tidewater, let us know about it.
