Grind 1 kg tobacco (pipe tobacco like Caravelle) to a fine powder.
Intermix tobacco powder with 11 dl waters and 1/2 hk ( 50 grams) salt.
Intermix, flat out and cover with gladpack.
Set the bowl to sweat in 45-50 degrees' heat in 5 days and night.
After five days and night mix in 90 grams potassium carbonate (Kaliumkarbonat) ,
work it thoroughly into the snuff and let it sweat for another day
and night too. Stir about so that it becomes evenly damp. If you think that is too damp, one can fluff it and let it sit some hours uncovered. When ready, pack in appropriate containers and freeze most of the kit.
When adding flavors, it is probably best to test them first in small amounts.
Juniper gives a taste
similar to Gothenburg's rapé, bergamot oil compares to General. One can of
course try something a little different. Citrus, Eucalyptus, Liver pate; what do I know?

Re: Another snus recipe: from Bengt Sandh
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 7:36 PMso why pipe tobacco?
what makes pipe tobacco different to other tobaccos?
last experiment i put in some american spirit and to be honest i didnt like the taste of the tobacco smoked its ok but chew not so good. even with flavour
maybe its just me and what i am used to.
do they still not put additives to pipe tobacco?
i would be wary of chewing such stuff.
but thank youf or the recipe
i wonder why it is so hard to snus recipes from old times
i cant seem to find any.
so juniper how woudl you use that to flavour?
i like this idea i have always wanted to try that snus the gothenburgs rape.
i got some home grown drying at the moment so in a few weeks or so i will make a new batch.
and document it
thanks for the write up snuffgrinder :) -

Re: Another snus recipe: from Bengt Sandh
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 11:50 PMSwedish pipe tobaccos have far fewer additives than most brands. This recipe came from an old book in Swedish by a retired snus maker. I found it on a Swedish forum and ran it through a web translator. Various essential oils are sold in Sweden as flavorings. For juniper, you could try making an alcohol tincture with the berries or just use some gin. I guess that pipe tobacco was a lot cheaper back when. I did try making snuff once from American cherry Cavendish and it was pretty horrible tasting. I suspect that the reason it's so hard to find snus recipes is that they're all in Swedish. -

Re: Another snus recipe: from Bengt Sandh
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 2:53 AMSvenskt snusrecept
4-5dl vatten
55-70g. koksalt
10g. Natriumkarbonat
Glycerol 1.5%-3.5% av färdig snusmassa
Smakämnen (eteriska oljor, sprit, kryddor m.m.)
Gör så här

Re: Another snus recipe: from Bengt Sandh
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 3:23 AMfound this great website but i cant refind it now but he has all his experiments with homemade snus at that website he wrote
this
dose approx 2 tsp bergamott oil per kilo snus and also approx 1/3 salt per dose.
my rough translation
he rates this as being a good snus with an earl grey flavour
i think maybe i put too much bergamot oil in my last bergamot flavour experiment

Re: Another snus recipe: from Bengt Sandh
Mon, April 7, 2008 - 6:04 PMThe only commercial snus that I've tried is General . The Offroad Cranberry has gotten a good review as a strong but mild flavored snus by a man whose opinion I respect.
