How to make a mapacho or a smudging stick using Rustica?

I'm growing Rustica in my garden for the first year I would like to make a mapacho or a smudging stick out of its leaves. I'm wondering if there's any special method to it or should I just roll the fresh leaves together, tie them up and let them dry in the shade?
