so as mentioned in the snus thread
there is a recipe for kawai a chewable tobacco paste kinda similar to snus, made from green mapacho leaves
i gave it a go tastes really nice with a green tobacco salt flavour, with a nice strong tobacco kick
basically i washed the tobacco leaves, to get rid of any dirt etc.
shook of the water although the leaves were still wet then i layed them out on a pancake pan, and made a layer of tobacco leaves sprinkled salt over that, then layed more leaves over the top sprinkle a little more salt then repeated this until my leaves were all layed out in a pile wiht salt disperse in
i cooked it on the hotplate over a low heat, after a while i turned it over and let it cook more from that side the tobacco gets steamed in the pile, eventually i compacted it and made a cake out of the leaves, when i felt it was done i removed and cut into strips i then mashed it up with a mortar and pestle then made it into a block, and am now jsut drying it out some in the oven in a low heat, so far it tastes good and has a nice tobacco taste.
thought i would share

Re: kawai - tobacco spirit
Sun, March 30, 2008 - 7:49 PMNow I really hope my plants survive this year. Green tobacco seems to almost be positively healthy. Wonder why there's this fixed idea in the "modern" world that it's unfit for consumption? Still might try this with cured Tabacum leaf, or maybe some Austrian style salty chewing tobacco. -

Re: kawai - tobacco spirit
Sun, March 30, 2008 - 8:31 PMyeah green tobacco is good but one thing i reccomend doing which i didnt do is remove the main stem from the leaf
i think this would work well with cured tobacco leaf, just make it moist before you start to cook
i think i prefer the taste of cured leaf more but the green is good as well very wholesome and warming like a roast dinner well kinda anyway
you shoudl write more about this austrian style salty chew
i dont know about that -
