Hey Toronto hoopers! I'm heading up from Philly for Halloween and was wondering if any hoopers will be going to Kool Haus?? And do you know if they allow hoops in the club? I tried emailing the talent manager but haven't heard back yet. Thanks :)

World Hoop Day! and upcoming performances!

WORLD HOOP DAY!!!!
Wednesday September 9th, 2009!

That's right! It's time! Come out and play!!

Positive Spin Hoops and Hoop Toronto (ie Allison and I) are teaming up to gather people in celebration of World Hoop Day! A whole evening of hoop love!

All are welcome - all connections and levels and ages and shapes - we'll have lots of hoops to use! There will be a short class at 6:30 (taught by Allison) and performances at 7:30 (MC'd by me... let me know if you want to perform!). The best part is the time between, the jam time to hang out while hooping, move with the music (on my new soundsystem!!) and meet other hoopers!

Location: Christie Pits (rain location : Dovercourt House, 2nd floor)
Cost: We'll be collecting donations for an established local safehouse.for women - PWYC ($10)
Times: Gather at 6, class at 6:30, performances at 7:30, jamming continues until we're exhausted!

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=126563539086

Hot and Spicy Show!
Sadie performs with Circus Alchemy at Harbourfront Centre THIS WEEKEND!
We (4 fire spinners and 3 drummers and 1 director) will be performing each night as part of the Hot and Spicy Food Festival at Harbourfront! This piece is a theatrical, plot-based, 30 minutes of fire dancing - I'm the fire deity who plays, prays, rages, regrets, and shares her passion. Plus there will be fantastic music and lots of spicy food!

Friday, Saturday, *and* Sunday September 4-6
9 pm
On the round side stage, Harbourfront Centre
FREE! (this doesn't happen often folks...free choreographed show...)

Also at Hot and Spicy - Free hoopdance lesson!
From 12:30-1 and 2-3 Allison and I will be teaching and demo-ing hoop dance! Come by the round stage and say hello and grab a hoop for some large-scale games!

Cabaret Performances
I'll be performing at two public shows the next weekend - one dirty underground circus show in Toronto, and one show in Kingston.

Lunacy Cabaret - Friday September 11th!
At Centre of Gravity, 1300 Gerrard St E, at Greenwood
Underground variety show, different acts everytime... aerials, clowning, dark clowning, live multimedia and more!
$12
doors at 7:30, show at 8:30
Lunacy is a Toronto institution, filled with laughter, offense, boredom, sex, confusion, and gasping and cringing! Entertainment and originality guaranteed! This one has a Love Boat theme, and is going to be amazing... I won't give away the plot, just trust me, it's brilliant.

The next night I'll be in Kingston for a show with Mysterion! Please tell friends in Kingston/Queens, cause it's going to be a magical, sexy, and entertaining show!

Circus O Burlesque A Mania Insania! -Saturday September 12th
Wellington St Theatre, Kingston, ON
$20!
With Mysterion, Canada's foremost mentalist, as well as burlesque, side show, and me!

where to buy tubing in toronto

well, its actually in brampton, but the great thing is that they will deliver it to you for free!

just say you are a home owner, as this company usually sells to tradespeople and companies.

I ordered the tubes from: http://bardonsupplies.com/, go to locations and get the phone number for the brampton office.
Ask for the order desk for plumbing.
A very nice woman will take your order, i forgot to ask her name.
I ordered 3/4" black poly tubing, 160 psi, 100ft roll. $44 bux, charged by visa over the phone.
And they are delivering it for free to my apt. woohoo! I told them they might get more calls.
I was very specific and made sure she confirmed it was 3/4" and 160 psi.
they dont carry 125psi or 1" unfortunately.

But this is a good start. Home depot does not sell this size or psi. I've been to 3 in the GTA and all the guys in the department said to find a plumbing supplier. I have not checked out irrigation suppliers yet.

Exciting news that's been brewing for a while... weekend classes and hoops at a gift fair!!

But first... a reminder...
Hoops make great presents!
They keep you warm, make you giggle, and you'll feel better about that 4th trip to the dessert table :) Custom made with your friend/mom/nephew/boss's favourite colours in mind, they are unique, personalized, and will help get a new spin on the new year. Know a mom and a daughter? You can get them a matching set!
More info online http://hooptoronto.com/hoops.html

The Tranzac is located at 292 Brunswick, close to Bloor and Spadina, and is open 12-6 (the fair runs Saturday and Sunday for the first three weekends in December, I'll be there for just two days) and it's FREE!!

Okay, as soon as the weather is remotely warm enough, I am *so* going to Hanlan's to hoop nekkid.

Any other Toronto nudist-minded hoopers will be totally welcome to join of course! We can have a picnic, a bonfire, and some fire jamming after the sun starts to go down, too.

Actually, checking the weather forecast, it looks to be getting nicer again, finally. Sunny and 17-20 or so, every day but Sunday (which is rainy, as is Monday earlier in the day).

The next two weekends are mostly bad for me, but does anyone wanna go mid-week next week?

Classes in Toronto!! Hooray!

Hello everyone I know! I am teaching hooping classes now! Below is a blurb about the classes, please spread it to anyone you know who is interested in dance, fitness, yoga, or who needs a break from stress. These classes are also great for post-decadence resolutions!

Hooping has changed my life, and I’m excited about spreading the love!

Whether or not it’s hoop related, I would love to hear how your life is going, because I have now EMERGED from the ashes of my master’s degree!

xoxosadie

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Join the revolution! Pick up a hoop!

Looking for a workout that feels good? Tone your core, work your heart, relieve stress, loosen up, laugh and sweat at hoopdance fitness classes, now offered in Toronto!

www.hooptoronto.com

Hooping is the newest form of integrative fitness, and like yoga, pilates, and nia, it’s fitness for your body and mind. This is a workout you will want to do! Hooping will build confidence, grace, focus, balance, and even revive your libido! Using adult-sized hula hoops, hooping strengthens and tones your abs, butt, thighs, and arms as you dance within a spinning hoop. The rhythm of the hoop makes it easy and fun to get a cardio workout, and is also great for meditation!

Classes are starting now! Taught by Sadie, a licensed HoopGirl(TM) instructor, the classes will wake up your body, warm your spirit, and break out summer-time smiles!

I have a hunch there has to be *somebody* making & selling hoops...
I'm new to this - I made my own hoop but not with the recommended psi (I got what I used for free by luck). Mine works, but I'm thinking a smaller yet firmer size might work better for learning more.

Do you want to make one? The only thing that's hard to find is wick, and I"m going to the states soon (oh jeez, real soon). I'm ordering wick and shipping it there to bring it back.

If you want your own fire hoop, the wick will cost around $30, then other supplies around 15. They're not hard to make, but I *might* be making them and selling them if you don't want to go to the trouble.

So! Let me know ASAP if you want wick/hoop!

World Hoop Day in TO?

Anyone planning on doing anything for World Hoop Day on 7/7/07? There are no Toronto listings on the main site:

http://www.worldhoopday.com/Home_Page.php

Castles in the Sky (http://newmindspace.com/castlesinthesky.php) is also that day. Dealing with a hoop and a costume and my bubble gun for the Castles in the Sky Bubble Battle might be biting off more than I can reasonable chew, but WHD is all day long and the newmindspace shindig is in the evening (7:07pm start time). Anyone wanna get together earlier in the day for some hooping? I mean, shit, why not, right?

We could, say, hit the park in Kensington (Bellevue Square) where the bimonthly Wednesday hooping happens at, say, 2pm or something? Gives people *plenty* of time to get home and change gear for the other evening event.

Anyone else down with this?

This Wednesday evening, at the park in Kensington

Bellevue Square Park (http://tinyurl.com/2fbmpn on Augusta, north of Dundas), probably on the west side

I'll be there at 7:30. I would like to have a stash of hoops so that everyone can just show up, but not sure if they will come together this week. Regardless, come. Play.

Unless there are objections (such as "ah! no! clowns!?!?!" or "sticks and balls? why would we want to play with sticks and balls?"), New Model Circus Army will also be gathering same place, same time.

My family is lucky enough to own a summer home in Port Colburne, not far from Toronto. As of right now I know I will be in Canada the weekend of May 18 and the second week of August, and hopefully a few more times throughout the summer. So if there will be any open hoopjams or happenings at these times, I'd love to tag along and connect with ya's. blessings!

Watch the entries here!

FIRST PLACE: SHARNA ROSE
Please find attached my enteries to the Hot Hoop Move contest. I had big problems uploading my my footage (youtube mashed its quality so I had to send dv quality images - they took nearly an hour for 20 seconds worth of film - this is why the clips are so short.) So I apologise for the unglamourous way that I have presented the films - I hope you can see the moves enough to get the general idea.

Move 1. Flipper (A Reversal) - Start this move from hooping around the knees. Can be done either side but for the purposes of the demonstration I have done it clockwise. You will need to remove your right leg from the hoop when the gap occurs (if you were doing a kick out you would move the other leg) and then you use the foot to reverse the hoop using the knee as a pivot. Reverse the instructions to do this the other way - Its really hard either way and I cant always get it - the music has to be just right - or I don't practice it enough.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym_P8__DRq0

Move 2. Back around the Summit - Start this move standing upright and lean forward as if you were going to take the hoop behind your back and pop in. If you take the hoop with your left hand then as you come around the right side of your body you need to put your right elbow up and into the hoop, using your body as a pivot push with this elbow and pull back with the left hand. Reverse the instructions for the other side.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ekDuhjQQEE

Move 3. Jack in the Box - Start this move by doing a Reversed Summit. In this clip I start by taking the hoop around my back with my left hand - Instead of reversing the move with the elbow behind the back pop back into the hoop and use your right hand to swing the hoop onto your body (tip - use your left hand to stall the hoop and help with momentum when reversing and turn the direction the hoop is now going in). I find it more difficult to go the other way. You reverse the instructions but somehow my body gets in the way - I think more practice is required by me or it needs more swing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ7fVdbGQVU

Move 4. Back Heel Flick - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop infront and behind the body horizontally at about knee hight. On passing the hoop in front of the body with left hand use the right heel to scoop the hoop behind and up as high as you can behind your back - use your left hand to push the hoop back on your body as you pop back in. This only works this way because if you reverse the instructions the hoop is passed infront of the body.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSlfQeLDsYw

Move 5. Wind up - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop around the body horizontally in front and behind you. As the hoop comes back around your left side to the front, place your right foot on the far of the hoop and push the hoop around so that it comes over your right side, over your head and release your left foot (you can either hold the hoop with both hands or just your right). Twist the hoop over your body again using right hand and jump out backward from the hoop - take the hoop back around to the right behind you, using right hand, and pop in. Turn. Reverse the instructions for going the other way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPPYrAy4gS0

SECOND PLACE: Erica Edelman
YouTube Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P90mutX0tUg
Moves:
Move 1: Celeste / Luna
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: This is a fun move that even brand new hoopers can do. The challenge is keeping your balance at the end without hopping, but if you only do a half-turn, then it is much easier (but less fun!) I asked my beginner students to name it, and they came up with either Celeste or Luna, because the end pose looks like those pictures of a lady in the moon.

Move 2: Fun Start
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: Both this move and the previous move can be done by brand new hoopers. I was trying to figure out the "circus start" move (which I can't do) when I stumbled upon this little gem. Newbie Hoopers love it, because it is a fun and easy way to start hooping, instead of just pushing it around the waist.

Move 3: One Shoulder Duckout from Waist Hooping
Difficulty: High Intermediate
Notes: For a while I was exploring with One Shoulder Duckout variations. I put this move on a video on my website showing those variations but no one ever seemed to pick it, or the other variations, up. This one is pretty fun, but not too pretty. I generally don't do it in performances, because it does not have a high enough success ratio. (i.e. it ocassionally goes flying)

Move 4: Isolation with Turn
Difficulty: Advanced
Notes: This is a new one for me. Lots of hoopers do isolations, but I don't think I have ever seen any add a turn to it. It is difficult, but definitely do-able for anyone who already has a one-handed isolation down.

Move 5: "Not the Matrix"
Difficulty: High Advanced
The base of this move is from last year for me, but the end of it is new. It starts out going from a left shoulder duck-out to a right shoulder duck-out WITHOUT putting your head in the hoop. Now, the new part for me: THEN it goes in front of you (without your head inside, again) to a left arm duck-out. If I can get that last piece to a left SHOULDER duck-out, then I can make the move continous.

SECOND PLACE: JESSICA SPARKS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScregYQ55to
The move: SCISSOR SWITCH
accomplished by stepping out of the hoop while hooping on your knees, and using your outside knee to change currents/directions.

THIRD PLACE: NATASHA YOUNG
I call this move the spin cycle. It's swish into a toss with a spin.
My sister used to do this move when she was a baton twirler. A lot of
off body hoopdancing is similar to baton (warrior, for example) so I
thought I would give this trick a try. It's called a one spin in
baton, but I've seen them do three spins and four spins! What I
learned from watching the baton twirlers are the following:
(1) the higher you toss, the more time you have to spin around before
catching the hoop
(2) you need to throw the hoop as straight up into the air as possible
(3) always spot the hoop so that you are always aware of where it is

Hello out there!! I’m getting ready to pack up my stuff and head out to London pretty soon (end of Feb) and just wanted to join your tribe to see if there were any workshops, play dates or shows that welcome hoopers for the coming spring.
I was toying with the idea of starting a London, ON Hoop tribe to meet people and stay active but will probably wait until I’m there to see if there is any demand for it or if I can create a demand for it.
I would love to hear from any of you about festivals, shows, anything!

Tuesday Feb 13 is hooping night as part of New Model Circus Army at North's/Salem's Loft/Dufferin and Dupont.
If you need directions, give me a shout.

Also, there's a plan to buy a roll of tubing, if you need a(nother) hoop, again, shout or post or PM or send smoke signals
(Nortina, you're already on the list :))

Only to the guys at HomeHardware who already LOVE me...but still! Pumped!

In the Town Crier there's an article about alternative fitness, and a paragraph about hooping, but a giant picture of me!

Unhappy with the picture and that they said I organize it even tho I told her several times that I don't...but still my ego is big right now

It's time again and we'll have even more hoops to play with since Cindy
has been helping folks make hoops.

Last time we had a guest from Ottawa who showed us some new tricks and
Cindy brought a dvd that we hooked up on my laptop. We've also started
the tradition of cupcakes and hoops, but it's too damn hot to bake, so
anyone else want to pick some cupcakes up or have air conditioning and
want to bake cupcakes this week?

Other then that mark down August 17th as the last hoop night before the
playa!

Here's the general info

When: Wednesdays (1st & 3d of the month), after 7:30pm
Where: Harbord Park, south side just west of Grace on Harbord st beside

my apartment at 333 Harbord (I'm #101 in case you're the first to
arrive)
Closest Liquor store- Bloor (south side) just east of Ossington
Closest Beer store- Bathurst (west side) just south of College
Transit- just south of Christie station (Christie becomes Grace) or
north of College street car (get off at Grace) walk west of College and

go right up Beatrice and through the park up to Harbord.

-Message: Please provide some content.

Which I think is a little unfair. How many posts have gone on tribe, completely devoid of content, even with some text in the message? :)
