I can't believe it's already here! I'm getting on a plane in 8.5 hrs, headed to VA, and am too excited to sleep! I've got a bag full of fans and some great new moves for everyone. So, here's what to expect at the workshop and a little teaser:
We'll start with 5-10 minutes of pilates to wake up the muscles and strengthen your legs, arms, and core. Then, how to hold your fans and open/close them. We'll drill simple fan movements in a slinky, sassy traveling move. Then, we'll work on layering fans with some classic bellydance moves, both stationary and traveling. We'll combine our layers into short combos such as the Damsel Combo (inspired by Rachel Lazarus Soto), The Setting Sun, and the absolutely brand-new Vaudevillian (and more!). All of these will then be combined into one huge combo. At the end of the 2 hrs, we'll stretch and cool your muscles with 5-10 minutes of yoga to help prepare you for the rest of your fun, workshop and dance-filled day!
Oh, and every participant will receive choreography notes so that you can focus on learning and practicing the moves, instead of trying to write everything down (though I would bring something to write with in case you want to make additional notes).
If you are worried about getting fans, I have plenty for sale and have some for people to borrow, if need be.
Bubbling with excitement,

Hello all,
The fabulous ladies of To The Earth are hosting me for a double fan workshop Sunday, July 20, 2008. As part of the workshop, I am offering a pre-order for fans. Due to my insanely busy schedule this summer, I can only hold pre-orders until May 18th, though I will order extras (don't worry!). The instructions are posted below and on my tribe: Bastet Fusion Fan Dancing. Just in case you're wondering what my double fan technique looks like, here's a video....enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Uo5VthVLQY

For your dancing delight, I've found many options for you to choose from to order through me:

$20/pair (Right Handed ONLY)
-----Black-Staved Fans: http://tribes.tribe.net/bastet/photos/e903546a-66c3-458d-922c-e314be6d22e1
-----Dragon and/or Phoenix Fans: http://tribes.tribe.net/bastet/photos/3d99218c-2ee8-43cd-9d72-83075cc8857f
$20/pair (Left and Right Handed Fans)
----Fade Fans: http://tribes.tribe.net/bastet/photos/7fbc038a-716d-46c3-a17b-13db52950fe9
$15/pair (Right Hand ONLY)
----Red or Black Dance Fans: http://tribes.tribe.net/bastet/photos/58e87594-212f-4ad2-9d0c-29c3de1269ca
$12/pair (Left and Right Handed Fans)
----Green Peacock: http://tribes.tribe.net/bastet/photos/76067eb5-8448-4936-8dbc-5709af94ee34
----Blue Peacock: http://tribes.tribe.net/bastet/photos/d41f95a5-16b6-4fac-9d9f-61379ab53f3b
----Red Dance Fans: http://tribes.tribe.net/bastet/photos/7657686e-8cf1-4c13-af83-aa3f9c748564

*I offer these options because I know I can save you money on them by buying (and shipping) in bulk and either own or have used all of these and found them to be acceptable or good for the price. However, my current favorite fans (and the ones you see in many of my pictures) are from waydragon.stores.yahoo.net/soli...html. I just called them, and they only have orange and green in stock right now. Unfortunately, I cannot save you any money by buying in bulk (at least, through my estimation). So, if you're interested, buy directly from them! There are also many vendors on ebay (though I think you'll pay about the same or more with shipping).

How to Order: Please send a paypal payment for the total to eve6570@hotmail.com with the name of the fan and color preference. I will be taking pre-orders until May 18th to guarantee color/style preferences. I will order extras of fans I feel will sell at the workshops. ONLY order fans if you are attending Pharos Live! workshops as you will receive them at the workshops. If fewer than 5 orders are made from any one vendor (I am ordering from several companies), I reserve the right to cancel those orders--you will be notified if this happens and your money refunded or used as a credit towards another pair of fans.

**If you cannot afford a set of fans and are attending my workshop, I will have a limited number of fans available to borrow. Please pm or e-mail me at bastetfusion@gmail.com to reserve a pair to borrow.

***If you're still reading at this point....here's my opinion on some of these fans: The loudest fans are the "Black-Staved Fans" and the "Dragon and/or Phoenix Fans", the easiest to handle are the ones from waydragon.com (the ones you'd have to order), but any of the left and right handed fans have a wonderful ease of use, the most graceful ones are probably these: tribes.tribe.net/bastet/ph...f9c748564, but the fade fans look the best on stage. If you're buying your own, please don't buy the metal martial arts fans. I have some. They are heavy, beautiful, and dangerous. If you fling them across the room by accident, you could seriously hurt someone. Also, they heavy enough that you could injure your wrist doing some of the movements that will be taught. Also, if you own fan veils, please don't use them for this workshop. Many of the movements you will learn MUST be modified in order to use fan veils. The movements and combos you will learn really focus on using the fan as a fan. Fan veils are, in my opinion, very different props.

Whew!
Out of the "Clubs and Organizations" our team, Bellies for Breasts, is in a *very* close second. All we need is a little help to catch up, and we're sure to come out first in our category!! :)

Our team of six belly dance students has really worked hard to raise money for Y-ME. And while it's fun perform for the walk participants and to engage in a little friendly competition as we read about how the other teams are doing, we know that there are women, their families, and their friends who face the reality of breast cancer every day. As dancers, we are so fortunate to have our health and to be able to share the joy of Middle Eastern music and dance. So fundraising for Y-ME is fun for us, but we take it seriously, and we couldn't do it without your support.

We are also so grateful for our dance teachers who make it possible for us to spread the love and joy of belly dance on Mother's Day.

And if you're so inclined, you can go here to donate main.y-me.org/goto/Rajni; if you want to donate to the team in general, there's a link to that there as well. :)
Fundamentals of Tribal Bellydance
Learn the core concepts of our style. Drawing heavily on Fat Chance Bellydance's American Tribal Style basics and our own east coast adaptations, we'll introduce you to tribal movement, posture, and spirit. You'll learn enough to begin leading & following simple tribal improvisations. Class is appropriate for any level, age (those under 18 need a guardian's permission) or gender. You can repeat the intro class as often as you like; "advanced beginners" get more individual challenges.

Register by March 7! Drop-ins are welcome when we have space - please email or call ahead.

Fundamentals: Tuesdays, 7:15-8:30pm / March 11 - April 22
Cost: $45 for 7-week session or drop-in at $10/class

Continuing Tribal Bellydance
For students with experience in our style or American Tribal Style. Expand your dance vocabulary with new movements for solo and group work. Through this class, you'll build on the fundamentals as you integrate the elements of tribal style bellydance - working through more complex improvisational choreography, cueing and movement. Zils (finger cymbals) are required for this class & students are offered opportunities (but not required!) to perform as a group. Each session introduces different topics based on the experience level of the dancers who sign up- you can repeat this class without ever getting bored. This session will be geared to students who've recently "graduated" from our Fundamentals class - great time to join or re-join the Continuing group.
Official site: www.hiltongardeninn.com

SCHEDULE:

FRIDAY - APRIL 4, 2008

2:00 PM - SURVEY OF ARAB MUSIC FOR DANCE (LECTURE): Although music exists without dance, dance rarely exists without music. Arab culture has a strong dance tradition with specific music that propels it. Students will study the relationship between music and the movement it creates or accompanies. The context, storylines and themes of each song will be explained. Overviews and recording samples will be given in the categories of Performance (Stage Dabka and Raqs Sharqi), Ritual (Zikr, Zaar, Sama/Whirling), and Social Dance (Dabka and Raqs Baladi). Karim will also demonstrate the intimate connection between rhythm and movement in the performance category, with live examples.

5:00 - DINNER ON YOUR OWN

7:00 - 10:00 DJ TABLA DANCE DISCO - Not Your Typical HAFLA – Be prepared to have the time of your LIFE!!!!!! In addition to loving modern music, DJ TABLA (Karim) is also a traditionalist. He has always loved the "pre-classics" of Egypt, Syria and Turkey. The great songs of the early 20th century have an intoxicating feel and spirit that is rarely found in modern music. Karim re-records these classics using top-notch musicians and singers. He bolsters the sound with heavy grooves and Electronica. These grooves (remember, Karim is a drummer) serve to propel the music on the dance floor, while maintaining the authentic spirit of the original composition. Karim prefers the use of traditional instruments, instead of the keyboards and synthesizers that dominate modern Electronica.

SATURDAY - APRIL 5, 2008

9: 00 MAQAM FOR DANCERS (workshop): Maqam is the Arabic system of scales and melody creation. All songs whether classical, pop or dance, are created in a Maqam, which dictates whether the song is happy, somber, uplifting, spiritual or sensual. Dancers will learn how to recognize, sing and move to maqams by learning famous song examples. Special attention will be given to Taksim, the art of instrumental solo improvisation. The dancer will practice interpreting the instrumental music into movement and personifying the mood of the music. This workshop is vital for dancers who wish to better interpret melody into movement.

12:00 - CATERED MIDDLE EASTERN LUNCH $10.00

1:30 MUSICALITY FOR DANCERS (workshop): Despite any mastery of technique and bodily dexterity, true dance expression requires musicality. The best dancers are those who emulate the music into their own movement. Karim will demystify Arab music for the dancer. Several recurring themes in Arab music will be identified (using recorded examples) and explained in emotive, non musical terms. The class will cover Taksim, Melodic Themes, Vocal vs. Instrumental Songs, Rhythms & Rhythmic Changes, Melodic Modulation, Song Structure, Orchestration and Instrumentation. Karim will guide the students through several songs and lead them in dancing to each of these themes. This is a movement class that will help the dancer become the physical personification of the music.

3:00 FROM THE VILLAGE TO THE STAGE - ARAB MUSIC & DANCE, THEN & NOW (LECTURE): This lecture will illustrate the function and setting of dance and music in the Arab world over the past 100 years. It is wide in scope, and will attempt to differentiate between dance and music in ritual settings, vs. entertainment and cabaret forms. The music ensembles and compositional styles will be explained, with listening examples. We will also discuss how dance performances evolve when transported from village to urban settings, including the introduction of choreography. The controversial role and status of the Dancer in society will be illuminated. Dance and music in the different regions in the Arab world (Egypt, Gulf, Levant and North Africa) will be compared with one another. The talk will conclude with an analysis on the effect video and mass media distributions have on the art form and Arab society.

5:00 DINNER ON YOUR OWN

7:30 - 10:30 PROFESSIONAL GUEST PERFORMERS $10.00

SUNDAY APRIL 6, 2008

9:00 SAGAT & Zills FINGER CYMBALS (workshop): Using the techniques of the Egyptian Sufi Zikr, Karim will present the Zills as a classical instrument and not simply a dance accessory. Karim has developed a comprehensive zill method that utilizes drum techniques, and an ambidextrous approach. Students will learn the Arabic rhythms by name and how to play them while dancing! Dancers will learn to use the cymbals to communicate rhythms to a band and accent solo dancing and body movements. Dancers and percussionists of all levels are welcome. Karim promises to transform dancers into musicians with his finger cymbal teaching approach.

12:00 LUNCH ON YOU OWN

1:00 RHYTHM FOR DANCERS (workshop): It's time to raise the bar for rhythmic literacy! A dancer's immediate connection to the music is the rhythm produced by the Tabla and percussion. Karim teaches each rhythm using the three-sound clapping approach. Karim then performs sample rhythms on the Tabla. Students will learn each rhythm by name, "dum-tak" vocalization, and clapping. Afterwards the dancers will learn choreography segments to help gain bodily control with the sample rhythm, putting theory into practice. By physically personifying each Rhythm, bodily mastery of that rhythm will be achieved. This movement workshop is perfect for any dancer who wants to better understand what they are dancing to.

The last one was SOOOOOOO much fun!

We're continuing right on from the session we started in October, with classes starting NEXT TUESDAY November 6.

Register by October 30! Drop-ins are welcome when we have space - please email or call ahead.

Fundamentals Fall 07: Tuesdays, 6:00-7:00 pm / November 6 - December 18
Cost: $45 for 7-week session or drop-in at $10/class

Continuing Tribal Bellydance
For students with experience in our style or American Tribal Style. Expand your dance vocabulary with new movements for solo and group work. Through this class, you'll build on the fundamentals as you integrate the elements of tribal style bellydance - working through more complex improvisational choreography, cueing and movement. Zils (finger cymbals) are required for this class & students are welcome to perform as a group. Each session introduces different topics based on the experience level of the dancers who sign up- you can repeat this class without ever getting bored.
Fundamentals of Tribal Bellydance
Learn the core concepts of our tribal fusion style. You can repeat the intro class as often as you like.

Fall Session - Fundamentals of Tribal Bellydance
Session 1 - Mondays, 6:00-7:00 pm
Session 2 - Mondays, 7:15-8:15 pm
Dates (7-week session): September 11 - October 23
Cost: $45 ($5 off each class if you take 2 or more)

Continuing Tribal Bellydance
For students with experience in our style or American Tribal Style. Expand your dance vocabulary with new movements for solo and group work. Through this class, you'll build on the fundamentals as you integrate the elements of tribal style bellydance - working through more complex improvisational choreography, cueing and movement. Zils (finger cymbals) are required for this class. Unlike the fundamentals class, this class does not follow the same format every session - each session introduces different topics.

Fall session of Continuing Tribal Bellydance
Tuesdays, 6:30-7:45 pm
Dates (7-week session): September 12 - October 31 (no class October 24)
Cost: $50 ($5 off each class if you take 2 or more)

Performance Preparation
For students with at least 4 months experience in our style. Drill the basic movement vocabulary, develop your personal performance style - even learn more about the elements of costuming. This class is aimed at students with an interest in performing, whether you're interested in joining a troupe or just dancing in your living room. Zils (finger cymbals) and a 10-yard skirt are required for this class.

Fall session of Performance Preparation
Wednesdays, 6:15-7:30 pm
Dates (7-week session): September 13 - October 25
Cost: $50 ($5 off each class if you take 2 or more)
