Hi folks,
A flurry of unfriendly visitors at the site of the proposed Bear
Mountain interchange in Langford has the tree sitters preparing for an
eviction notice. Word on the street is that a section of private
property that included part of the new interchange has finally changed
hands, and the city contractors can now begin work.
The Spaet Mountain Action Coalition is calling for people to join the
tree sitters and help with ground support, climbing gear (especially
rope) and video cameras. We ask that everyone in the community witness
this action to defend the sacred cave, endangered species, and
wetlands.
Before the workers can clear the trees, bulldoze the road grade and
build the overpass at the end of Leigh Road, they will have to evict
the camp, which is using peaceful civil disobedience to block
construction. Whether the city resorts to a court order or tries to
charge people with trespassing, all individuals at the site will be
given notice to vacate the area. The tree sitters have promised to
peacefully defy these orders, while others are working to resolve the
conflict by legal means.
To reach the Bear Mountain Tree Sit, take Highway 1 to Spencer Road in
Langford. Turn south on Spencer Road to Goldstream Avenue. Turn right
(west) on Goldstream Avenue, go 1/2 km to Leigh Road (Glen Lake
Automotive on corner.) Turn right on Leigh Road, go to the end of the
road and walk into the woods. By bus, take the number 50 from downtown
Victoria, get off where the bus turns off Goldstream at Carlow Rd. in
front of Spencer School. Walk west 1/2 km to Leigh Road, turn right.
