Re: fire
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 8:11 PMOk, awesome! I'll definitely keep that in mind as we progress into the registration period in early 2008 (Jan). Even just placing some in the music stores in the area, and maybe in some shops on the Commons would be sufficient.
We'll be in touch, thanks again Rev.

Re: fire
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 2:11 AMHmmm... I was waiting for someone to bring this up.
CAMP fire will most certainly be allowed...
POI fire? Most likely not.
I really don't know much about poi, but am willing to listen and learn more about the art and somehow incorporate it into the festival if possible... maybe glow poi could be done?

Re: fire
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 5:39 AMthe self immulation arts would more than likely not be condusive to the vibes trying to be summoned at this festival, at least, until certain permits are acquired.
poi fire could be done, provided certain percautions were met.
fire blankets, fire safties, and of course...poi, but i think it's still something the ithaca town committee should be aware of, i believe it requires a fire permit to burn infront of people in a public place, and perhaps a frie permit of sorts...i cant honestly say for fact though, for i have never checked the legalities of poi.
But im rooted in the belief that fire makes things better and would be a great attribute to the festival. -

Uhhh...
Do you mean self immolation? I had to look it up.
To destroy or sacrifice with fire?!?!?
No, no... I'm definitely not summoning that, I guess.
No destroying, no sacrificing, please. ;-)
I'm all for spinning glow sticks and dancing, though!
As far as looking into obtaining permits and other information to allow fire during TMG, it is not high on the priority list at this particular time. I'm not sure if festival insurance would even cover that... I'd have to look into it more -

Re: fire
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 7:09 AMNo problem at all, JFO... I admit am pretty ignorant of fire arts and terminology.
Any tribes or websites you could recommend for me to do more research, reading, and exploring?
I will definitely look into it more over the next few weeks, and thanks! :-) -

Re: fire
Tue, November 13, 2007 - 2:40 PMFor more info check out my page and look at my tribes:
There are all kinds of fire play tribes out there. Fire Arts Education is where I would start off. Wildfire, Beginner poi etc.
My perspective is this:
Fire play should always have trained safeties at all times. There are all kinds of fire arts. The most known if Poi. Poi are made up of a Kevlar wick, (ball or square), attached to chains. The wicks are soaked in fuel and lit on fire. The performer then proceeds to do all kinds of cool things. go to you tube and just search for Fire Poi. Thousands of videos will show up. There is also www.homeofpoi.com They have free videos on training, safety and such. Good stuff.
There are also Staff, Fans, (which is what I do) Swords, you name it. If you can get a wick on it, you can burn it.
It has been my experience that drumming, didj and fire play tend to go together. Or at least, travel in the same circles. Many of the fire folk I know, also play drums and or didj. I think it is a primal thing. They all take us back to our origins.
Fire folk are a friendly bunch who love nothing more than to chat about fire. So feel free anyone to check out the tribes and ask away. Feel free to PM me as well, I happy to share what knowledge I do have.

Re: fire
Sat, November 24, 2007 - 12:13 AMIf the gathering is on private land, there's probably no need for a permit. If it's on public land, you may need a permit for it. Basically know the land. If it's a place that is prone to burning due to dry underbrush or lots of dry grass, i'd say skip the fire, if it's not a high fire risk area, I'd suggest it. In fact, I'd bring my gear!!!
Most fire spinners I know are really responsible and spread the responsibility to those around them. Think about it, do you want some crackhead making sure you don't burn yourself thoroughly or perform Dance Dance Immolation (OK I stole that name). If you can have camp fires, spinners shouldn't be a problem.
I do know a handful of didge playing fire spinners and yes, I think it's the primal nature of both that compliment each other well. -

Re: fire
Sat, November 24, 2007 - 8:18 AMIt is State (public) land.
Yes, campfires are permitted.
I'll have to look into fire spinning more over the next several weeks.
