mmm those redheads. i always loved Crusher (well except that one accident, Wesley) but she was so underused (I did enjoy Pulaski too though) I like the books that use Crusher. they flush her character well.
Cheryl Gates McFadden (born March 2, 1949 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), usually credited as Gates McFadden, is an American actress and choreographer. She is best known for portraying the character of Dr. Beverly Crusher in the television and film series Star Trek: The Next Generation. She attended Brandeis University earning B.A Cum Laude in Theater Arts.
Before Star Trek: The Next Generation she was mostly known as a choreographer, often working on Jim Henson productions including the films The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth.
She appeared briefly in the Woody Allen film Stardust Memories, and in The Hunt for Red October as Jack Ryan's wife Cathy, though most of her scenes were cut in post-production.
Gates also appeared in the made-for-television movie Crowned and Dangerous with Yasmine Bleeth in 1997.
In 1987, McFadden was cast as Dr. Beverly Crusher on Star Trek The Next Generation. The Crusher character was slated to be Picard's love interest, and this aspect of the character is what attracted McFadden to the role. Like many of the TNG characters during its first season, Crusher wasn't very well developed. There were some disagreements between the show's producers and McFadden as to how the character should develop. These disagreements led to some bad blood between her and several executive producers, resulting in McFadden's being released from her contract and not being in TNG's second season.
However, her replacement Diana Muldaur proved to be unpopular and McFadden was personally asked to return by Rick Berman. At first McFadden was hesitant as she had felt she had moved on; however, after a phone call from her co-star Patrick Stewart, McFadden changed her mind and returned.
From the Third Season on, Crusher was still under-used, but the character was mellowed slightly. McFadden remained vocal about her disappointing screen time, especially during TNG movies.
McFadden now divides her time between L.A. and the south of France where she and her husband are restoring an old theater. McFadden remains close to her TNG co-stars. Brent Spiner is the godfather of her son, Marina Sirtis lives only a few doors down from her L.A. home, she and LeVar Burton reportedly chat on the phone often, and she has said Michael Dorn is her theater buddy and they go to many performances together in the L.A. area. In an interview in 2004, McFadden admitted that she was always closest to Patrick Stewart and she sees him more often than the others since he now lives in the United Kingdom and she in France.

Re: 3/2 Birthday to Dr Beverly Crusher - Gates McFadden
Thu, March 2, 2006 - 10:49 AMI loved Beverly Crusher. She was my favorite female character on STNG (with the redoubtable Ensign Ro a close second) and is one of my favorite Trek women characters period. McFadden brought a potent combination of intelligence, beauty, elegance and mature sensuality to the role. It's a shame the character wasn't explored in more depth, especially the relationship with Picard (they were such a great match!) I would much rather have had more Crusher and less Troi! -

Re: 3/2 Birthday to Dr Beverly Crusher - Gates McFadden
Thu, March 2, 2006 - 7:37 PMYeah I could have handled less Troi too.
And if they would do something with a relationship with Picard and Crusher I would have liked one between Picard and Guinan. I loved it when they interacted.

Re: 3/2 Birthday to Dr Beverly Crusher - Gates McFadden
Fri, March 3, 2006 - 3:32 AMmost of the other things she has been in that I know of were bit parts or got cut out like The Hunt For Red October. She was briefly in the Muppets Take Manhattan, but she mostly worked as puppeteer on that. The IMDB has a list of thing she is/has done. I havent checked it out yet. I think she mostly has been doing teaching and rehabing a theatre in France of late.

Re: 3/2 Birthday to Dr Beverly Crusher - Gates McFadden
Fri, March 3, 2006 - 4:35 AMThanks for posting that great update on Gates McFadden. I always enjoyed her too. I liked it when they developed the friendship between her and Troi. I thought that was fairly unique in Star Trek at the time. (They later did something similar and better between Dax and Kira.) I would have liked to see more develop between Picard and Crusher. I loved the episode where they were on the being hunted on the planet together and could read each other's minds. -
