$7 donation ~ This event is a Benefit for the Mara Triangle in the Masai Mara animal conserve in Africa, where post-election violence has seen a collapse in tourism due to political turmoil. The Mara Conservancy, a non-profit, was entirely dependent upon park entrance fees paid by visitors to manage the Mara Triangle, and since the New Year they've had to suffer severe cutbacks in critical park operations. Working on a reduced budget has already had an impact on their effectiveness, and May was tthe first month since January that they've started with no money to carry on.

Last month, rangers caught 6 poachers who had killed 37 Thomson Gazelles, and last month of ot heir rangers was shot and seriously injured when chasing cattle rustlers. The Big Cats in the park are also under threat since the collapse of the compensation scheme in January, which you can read more about this here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7372298.stm

To read more about what I have written you can visit Kimojino's blog where it is also possible to make a donation, with 100% of your donation (minus only a small bank fee) going directly to support the work of the Mara Conservancy rangers:
www.maratriangle.wildlifedirect.org
If you have ever visited the Mara you'll know how important it is to preserve the animals in this incredible place, and if you have ever wanted to visit, then your support now is crucial.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and please feel free to email me with any questions.

Core Focus Fusion: Belly Dance & Pilates with Freyja: 12-2pm
The focus of this workshop is on moving from the core with strength and grace through combining Pilates and Belly Dance. Pilates is an excellent discipline to incorporate into belly dance practice for many reasons. Not only does it condition the muscles that are necessary to develop a healthy and strong dance posture while deepening body awareness, it is also an excellent way to learn and improve the muscle isolations that are used in the dance. Although we will learn fundamental Pilates exercises and then apply them to various belly dance movements, this unique format isn't about doing Pilates and then drilling belly dance but literally fusing both practices into one. You will develop a true understanding and ability of how to isolate the core muscles that are essential in the dance. By applying the techniques from this workshop, you can expect improved dance posture, cleaner isolations, increased torso flexibility and a better understanding of your core and the role it plays in your dance practice.

Freyja began her study of dance in early childhood. Her dance background includes ballet, jazz, hip hop, ballroom, salsa, club dancing, flamenco, Indonesian and Indian dance. She has developed her own unique style, drawing from many of these sources. Freyja has studied American Cabaret, Turkish and Egyptian styles of belly dance as well as American tribal style, which later led to tribal fusion. She has studied with a long list of teachers, most notably Ansuya, Frederique, Jamila and Suhaila Salimpour. Freyja has taught and performed all over the United States, Canada and Europe. She is credited with excellent technique and musical interpretation, crisp isolations and original innovative choreography. As an instructor, she gives great presentation and breakdown of moves, while emphasizing proper posture and movement in order to prevent injuries and gain muscle strength. She has made an extensive study of anatomy, physiology and body mechanics, and uses this knowledge to help students master the motions and gain the needed strength and flexibility to improve their dance. Freyja's love of therapeutic healing arts led her to obtain her yoga teacher training certification at the acclaimed Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. She is also certified to teach mat and apparatus Pilates classes by IMX Pilates. Freyja continues to study various movement disciplines and is currently focusing on the Alexander technique and principles of qigong to enhance her own practice and compliment her teaching.

Funk Fusion Bellydance with Cera Byer: 3-5pm
This workshop brings you Hip hop, Pop n' Lock, and Funk flava, with intense, high energy conditioning and choreography. Our warm up will focus on layered isolations including syncopated body rhythms, layering two and three dimensional movements simultaneously, and traveling shimmy layers. Then we'll move on to funk fusion combos that you can use, deconstruct, or use to create your own! Come away challenged, inspired, and with lots to work on at home.

Cera has been studying dance, music, and theater since the age of 4. Her dance experience includes Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Afro-Haitian, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, Kathak of India, Dunham Technique, Salsa, Samba, Tribal Bellydance, classical and contemporary Persian dance, Flamenco, and most recently, Capoiera. In addition to being the founder and Artistic Director of Damage Control Dance Theater, Cera has performed professionally with Shahrzad Dance Company (Classical and Contemporary Persian dance), PULSE Modern Dance Ensemble (Modern), Ultra Gypsy Dance Theater Company (Innovative Tribal Fusion Bellydance), Rara Tou Limen (San Francisco's only Carnaval contingent representing Haiti), as well as presenting her solo choreography in festivals, concert stages, lecture demonstrations, and private events across the Bay Area and beyond. Cera holds a BA in Dance (Performance and Choreography), with an emphasis in World Music and Dance from San Francisco State University, and certifications in Group Fitness Instruction (YMCA) and Pilates Mat (Sanchez St. Studios). Presently, she owns and operates ShoeBox Studio in San Francisco, in addition to teaching dance daily at a local high school.

Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to create Tribal Derivations last spring, Zoe discovered she enjoyed creating music, and plans to make more.
When not with the Indigo, she tours with The Yard Dogs Road Show, a cartoon circus sideshow of wacky dimension, and has been seen tearing it upwith the Extra Action Marching Band.
An innovative dancer, Zoe has been said to have her own unique take on Tribal bellydance. She takes her influence from Art Nouveau, tango, Breakdance, and Indian classical dance. Zoe was recently nominated for Zaghareets best interpretive artist 2007. She loves unicorns and has never once doubted their existence.

In fact, we have an entire track dedicated to tribal & tribal fusion. Check out our schedule at www.bellydanceintensive.com

Additionally, for those who are joining us, we've added some extra-curricular tour packages to our shopping cart. We figure there are a few of you who would like to have a broader experience of Las Vegas an the surrounding area while you are in our city.

These discounted tour packages are courtesy of Leyla Amir, who works in the tour industry here in Vegas. Not only is she an amazing dancer and teacher...she is a great resource for seeing the Vegas sites.

We are still working on adding some golf and scuba diving programs too. If you are coming to Vegas, you might as well make a week of it, eh?
Using a variety of movement methods, we will condition and tone the muscles that we rely on most as bellydancers, emphasizing healthy alignment of the spine and joints. After a warm-up and mat session, we will then rock out with technique-focused drills that get the rhythm in our bodies and our blood pumpin! This body-warming class will culminate in fresh dance combinations! All levels are welcome.

After a warm up and short drill session, we’ll integrate Tribal Fusion bellydance moves with some unexpected twists, borrowed from classical dance and beyond. Some experience is great, but adventurous beginners are encouraged to give it a whirl.

Take a full day with Sharon for € 80
Technique Focused Dance Combi's. We will learn and create some fun combinations that can be incorporated into your own repertoire, keeping strong muscular skill and alignment well in hand so the creative juices are free to flow! As we weave our moves into combos, we shall then weave the combos into a choreography to take with us! This class is fun and appropriate for all levels of Tribal-flavored dancer, and those new to Tribal Style are encouraged to give it a try.

WEST COAST PREMIERE SCREENING !

THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2008, 7:30PM

“Underbelly”, a feature-length documentary by award-winning director Steve Balderson, will make its West Coast Premiere Thursday, May 15, 2008 at Tribal Fest!

Providing the viewer with a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of contemporary American belly dance, as well as one woman’s personal journey, “Underbelly” traces a year in the life of international star Princess Farhana. Shot on locations across the globe (including loads of footage from Tribal Fest 2007). “Underbelly” is as insightful, inspirational and educational as it is raunchy and hilarious! It reflects the view from the stage and the personal lives of the dancers, while covering the dance itself - how it enriches and heals lives - and addresses the raging controversy Princess Farhana generated by pioneering the fusion of belly dance with classic burlesque.

Candid interviews with stars of the field such as Kajira Djoumahna, Samantha Riggs, Onca O’Leary, Rachel Brice, Lee Ali, Rachel Lazarus Soto, Marta Schill, Politti Ashcraft, Blume Bauer and John Compton bump up against the opinions of students and hobbyists. Outrageous differences in opinion are offered by belly dance purists and innovators alike, as well as burlesque stars like Miss Dirty Martini, Jo Weldon and Kate Valentine. Performances by Princess Farhana, comedian/dancer Margaret Cho, Blacksheep Belly Dance, Rachel Brice, Jim Boz , Tempest, illuminate the range of Oriental dance styles, the relationship between burlesque and belly dance, and how each artist puts a personal signature on the world’s oldest dance, as it’s performed today.

Tribal Fest 8 presents The West Coast Premiere of:
What the press is saying about “Underbelly”:

ZAGHAREET MAGAZINE

“Gutsy and honest...with insight into the history of belly dance, the evolution of different dance styles, and why so many dancers are drawn to this beautiful art form…You’ll definitely want to see this movie and add this DVD to your collection.”

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
“Holds nothing back!”

FILM THREAT
“UNDERBELLY is so well done and feels so complete that it almost transcends the subject matter and becomes a documentary about passion…an unexpected source of inspiration!”

FRANTIK MAGAZINE
“In this eccentric and wonderful documentary film by Steve Balderson, Underbelly captures the essence of Princess Farhana and the underground, taboo world of belly dancing…”

BELLY DANCE TV
“This story - and the people in it - represents an intriguing part of our modern culture. "Underbelly" is an artfully crafted documentary.”

In the lovely state of washington obtaining the priveledge to serve alcohol can be a pretty complicated and expensive ordeal. My question to festival goers is - Do you feel that the availabilty of alcohol at a festival enhances your experience? Does not having alcohol affect your opinion of the experience?
To give some background this is a 4 hour event with performances and vending. There are locations near by where people could find a cocktail, but they are not in walking distance. Allowing people to bring there own alcohol does not change the fees we would have to pay and therefore becomes even more expensive than accepting donations...
Thank you in advance for your input!

Hello to all you gifted teachers out there!

I am the organizer of the Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive, a 3 day belly dance event that will take place Sept. 5-7th, 2008. This year our headliners are Ava Fleming (2004 Bellydancer of the Year), Kami Liddle (Bellydance Superstars), and Karim Nagi (Turbo Tabla).

At our event, there are 3 level & style specific tracks on Saturday & Sunday. Most of the instructor positions are full already; however, we do have a few open spots available.

The positions left are ideal for someone who is already planning on attending the event, as I do not have the budget to pay for airfare & accomodations; however, I can pay you for your class and offer you additional workshops in exchange for your time.

I am looking for experienced teachers only. And more specifically, I have more positions available for tribal. Other styles including Fusion, Egyptian, Folkloric, Oriental, Am-cab, etc. will also be considered with strong qualifications.

Please send a resume, photos, youtube clips (if you have them), and at least 3 references (preferably from other organizers you have worked with) , as well as a list of possible topics to Samira at BellydanceIntensive dot com. Please put "2008 Instructor Application" in the subject line. [The ability to follow instructions makes a great first impression *winks*]

(note: we prefer skill-oriented workshops instead of choreography based ones)

Lastly, I'd like to be clear that the Las Vegas Bellydance Intensive is NOT associated with the IBDC that was held in Las Vegas last year. All of our teachers are paid the day they teach.

Much love,
Samira
