BURNING MAN LIVE (Piss Clear Mag)

Hey Tribal Folks & Amazing People,

Do you all know about Piss Clear, the Burner magazine, that was around for 13 years? It’s been called “the Vice Magazine of the playa” – sharp and funny with an alternative view of Black Rock City. I found out that RE/Search Publications has published BURNING MAN LIVE, which has the best of all 13 years (1994-2007), including “Best of Black Rock City,” “Sex and Drugs,” “Playa Fashion Do’s and Don’ts,” “You Know You’re a Burner When…” “Borg Wars,” interviews with Larry Harvey (Burning Man cofounder) and Harley DuBois (Director of Community Services), and introductions by Brian Doherty, Adrian Roberts, and Malderor. This book is 320 pages, and HUGE (8.5 by 11 inches) of pure Burning Man history– highly recommended – with really great articles and photos.

Just go to the link below to check out the book or make an order:

http://www.researchpubs.com/Blog/?page_id=13&product_id=74

(while it looks like the link is incomplete, it works. if you do have any problems, though, you can just go to www.researchpubs.com)

Anyway, it's an amazing book and I suggest you all check it out, if interested.

NOTE: I found this message from another BM group I'm a part of. I ordered the book -- loved it, talked to the woman who is spreading the word -- and now I'm spreading the word, too. This reminds me of the old BM days, as well as the more recent. It's great fun!

Come support our Belly Dance Baby Fundraiser and take this exciting workshop by Raven!

Looking for a new dynamic way to keep your audience on the edge of their seats? Bring your message to the masses with this creative take on storytelling. Join Raven of TABU as she demonstrates how you can use music, movement, and emotion to tell a story. Whether you are an Egyptian Cabaret dancer, a Tribal Fusion dancer, or somewhere in between this workshop can help you explore your creative side and intrigue your audience. A short conversation about story construction, character creation, props, costumes, music, and understanding your audience will begin our journey. We will incorporate our stories into combinations and a short choreography.

This is a 2 1/2 hour workshop. It will start at 10:00am. on Saturday April 18th and will end at 12:30pm.
All proceeds will go to the “Belly dance baby” fundraiser for Faizeh. Dress comfortable! Only 15 spots available! Donation for the workshop is $35.00 USD. Workshop will be held at Blue Scarab Dance studio in Lancaster California. www.bluescarab.org

Koalas need our help *Australia's deadly wildfires

You may have seen this famous photo showing a firefighter giving water to "Sam" the koala as she holds his hand. The firefighter found Sam walking painfully on scorched paws along the smoldering forest floor. Sam was rushed to the Southern Ash Wildlife Shelter, a group IFAW is supporting with an emergency grant.

SYDNEY -- It was a chance encounter in the charred landscape of Australia's deadly wildfires: A koala sips water from a bottle offered by a firefighter. David Tree noticed the koala moving gingerly on scorched paws as his fire patrol passed. Clearly in pain, the animal stopped when it saw Tree.
Local CFA firefighter David Tree shares his water with an injured Australian Koala at Mirboo North after wildfires swept through the region on Monday, Feb. 9, 2009. Suspicions that the worst wildfires ever to strike Australia were deliberately set led police to declare crime scenes Monday in towns incinerated by blazes, while investigators moving into the charred landscape discovered more bodies. The death toll stood at 200.One man has been arrested for arson.

After the scorched koala sipped from the water bottle and Tree's crew moved on, animal welfare officials came by.
Coleen Wood, manager of the Mountain Ash Wildlife Shelter where the koala was taken for treatment of second- and third-degree burns to its paws, said Wednesday that it was expected to make a full recovery.

Wood said there was no doubt the animal was wild, not domesticated, and that it would be released back into nature once a suitable habitat is found - the foliage in Sam's forest was all but destroyed.
"The hardest part is going to be trying to find enough habitat to support these guys," Wood said.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Animals said it was establishing shelters to care for thousands of pets and livestock affected by the fires.

If you wish you could help - then please visit this link to IFAW. They are an amazing organization that jumps in when wildlife are in need of human help.
Tough days lie ahead. But it’s a moment to dream. Americans have earned that right, along with the renewed respect of the world.

Silverback Gorillas in Peril!

Silverback Gorillas in peril - We can help!
The Gorilla Park Headquarters in DR Congo is still held by the rebels. They spent the night there and vandalized the buildings by busting down doors and stealing.

The 50+ Rangers who fled yesterday from the fighting spent the night in the forest with no food, or shelter, or water. The situation is now desperate. The area controled by the rebels has grown, and we fear our Rangers are now sitting in an isolated pocket of forest, totally vulnerable to all the militia groups in the area.

Go to www.gorilla.cd/blog to catch up with the latest events as they unfold on the ground - be the first to know what is going on in the struggle to protect Virunga and 200 of the world's last remaining Mountain Gorillas. We need your help.

Links to contributions there. Please take action - this is critical!

$7 donation ~ This event is a Benefit for the Mara Triangle in the Masai Mara animal conserve in Africa, where post-election violence has seen a collapse in tourism due to political turmoil. The Mara Conservancy, a non-profit, was entirely dependent upon park entrance fees paid by visitors to manage the Mara Triangle, and since the New Year they've had to suffer severe cutbacks in critical park operations. Working on a reduced budget has already had an impact on their effectiveness, and May was tthe first month since January that they've started with no money to carry on.

Last month, rangers caught 6 poachers who had killed 37 Thomson Gazelles, and last month of ot heir rangers was shot and seriously injured when chasing cattle rustlers. The Big Cats in the park are also under threat since the collapse of the compensation scheme in January, which you can read more about this here: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/scien...7372298.stm

To read more about what I have written you can visit Kimojino's blog where it is also possible to make a donation, with 100% of your donation (minus only a small bank fee) going directly to support the work of the Mara Conservancy rangers:
www.maratriangle.wildlifedirect.org
If you have ever visited the Mara you'll know how important it is to preserve the animals in this incredible place, and if you have ever wanted to visit, then your support now is crucial.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and please feel free to email me with any questions.

It's true ~ for those who haven't heard:

Tribal Caravan - moving on........
While festivals keep getting bigger and bigger, we had felt the desire to keep ours a small gathering "family vibe" to Tribal Caravan - focusing on Quality over quantity. And now it is time to move on. Tribal Caravan as you have known it for these past three years will no longer take place, but other ventures - probably smaller ones - will replace what has been. You may see Tribal Caravan Dance Camp in the future, or even Tribal Caravan Tours. We feel satisfaction at the infusion of so many new additions to the Los Angeles Tribal Bellydance Community and look forward to participating in its future growth.
Others may choose to begin an alternate event in our place, but for us - THIS festival is being retired.
We thank you ALL for your support and enthusiasm. Most of all, we extend our gratitude to our many amazing instructors from all three years - most especially Sharon Kihara!

Blessings!
The Tribal Caravan Team

I'm glad I was able to convince her to come down to LA and dance at tribal caravan. She's just one of those gems I discovered last year in Oregon and couldn't blieve nobody knew her on the west coast. I've gotten pretty good at finding hidden treasures, haven't I? :).
This was her first trip to california and i'm so happy it was tribal caravan that brought her here.

There was some great music playing all throughout the day/evening performances. I remember thinking to myself "I wish I knew the name of that song, it's fabulous!" I'd be curious to know what artists/songs everyone was dancing to.

There was a brand new song by Solace that I heard in the Saturday evening performance. It sounded like it had some Indian influence.... I guess it hasn't yet been released - but people were pre-ordering the album. I must know the name of this track/album, I NEED to buy it... it was captivating!!!!! I tip my hat to the ladies performing to this song, I was dancing in my seat!

OK,

I've been frantically working to get all these photos of all you dancers together and polished up and ready for viewin'! I've finally got the VAST majority of them together and you can have a look at them by going to www.weathervaneimages.com and following the "Dance and Festival" link from the homepage. If your having trouble, go straight the galleries with this link " archive.weathervaneimages.com ". (NO www.)

I've tried very hard to email, personally, everyone I photographed, but there are some you I just couldn't track down, namely, Madala Dance Works, Daniella, Sazhrah, Sacred Sol, and Troupe Melanges. If you know these dancers, please help me, and them, out and pass on the link!!!!

All photos are available for download from their respective galleries! When you order using the volume discounts listed at the head of the galleries, "buy" one of the three photo quantities at the top of your gallery, and email me the numbers of the photos you would like included in the package (info@weathervaneimages.com). I'll get them to you within 24 hours, if at all possible! (MAKE SURE YOU TELL YOUR TROUPE NAME WHEN YOU EMAIL!! :)

There will also be prints, postcards and greeting card available for purchase!!

I'm allowing an open useage license, you can advertise with your photos so long as the copyright information stays attached in its original form. Other than that, they're yours to use!!!
In the event that you want to use these photos for advertising through posters, mailers, or business cards and you would find my copyright information obtrusive, please email me personally at info@weathervaneimages.com and, for most cases, I will send you a clean copy of the photo to use.

Thanks! Enjoy your photos!
We had alot of "second generation" youngsters showing us that they can pitch in too!
Clearly an even of this size cannot possibly take place without many many hands and you know who you are :)

High praise to our Stage Managers, Rockin' MCs, Security Men & Women, Amy Magnusen for taking over the Raffle, Jennifer the Mistress of Performer check-in, our airport runners and Jessica Martinez for volunteer overseeing. Also Amar's many assitants from san francisco and New York.
Every one of you helped make this possible and we appreciate you to pieces!

I have met some of the most amazing performers and talented folks I've ever had the pleasure meeting and the experience was truly rewarding. I want to take this opportunity to express just how blessed I feel to have been a part of it all. Not only were the workshops incredible, but the time spent with others was a treasure. A huge hug to all and I can't wait for next year!!!

The Festival Venue does not officially open to the public until 10:30, but this workshop will begin at 10:00 a.m. and we know that you want to get yourself checked-in before it begins.

Please walk around on the right, to the FAR (furthest) SIDE of the building - there will be glass doors and someone there to check you into the classroom.
Allow 5 extra minutes so that you won't hold up the beginning of the class. There are other workshops starting right after in the same room.

If you will need to change clothes before class - there is a small brick building to the right as you walk around that has a ladies room in it.

thanks!

TCLA 08 Instructor- Steven Eggers

And now....Steven....the Boy Wonder...

Once upon a time, a boy named Steven was born in a little desert town in the middle of nowhere, called Ridgecrest. His connection with drama and the performing arts drew him reluctantly towards English country dancing in a Renaissance dance class. One day when he arrived early, he happened upon the magic of Tribal belly dance for the very first time. He knew right away that he was hooked. Studying doumbek rhythms to drum for Troupe Kandahar, he was eventually coaxed into dancing instead. In just three months of nurturing his natural ability, he was ready to perform with the troupe at Cairo Carnivale 2001. Powerful motivation drove him to every class, workshop, and festival performance possible, eventually leading him to branch off to form his own troupe – Isidis – and win the Ultimate Troupe Competition at Hips of Fury 2005.

His passion and confidence made him a perfect match for Atash Maya when he moved to San Diego in 2005. Here he has mastered brilliant fire performance, American Tribal Style, and fusing Tribal with dance forms as varied as Indian Classical, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Breakdance, Salsa, Modern, and Pop Locking. Steven is especially intuitive about connecting with students in classes and workshops, making sure they really grasp each lesson. His unconventional thinking shines through in his teaching, encouraging everyone to try a new perspective. Whether you study with him or see him perform, you will agree with those who have dubbed him otherworldly and “the most beautiful boy in bellydance”.

yesterday someone used Google maps and it gave them mis-leading directions.

Here's your BEST way to get there:

Main Venue -
Borchard Community Center
190 North Reino Rd.
Newbury Park, CA 91320
Saturday April 26
10:30am - 7:00 pm
also the location for the Electric Vardo After-Party same night

coming from the South (San Diego, Riverside, L.A., Burbank) :
Take the 101 Freeway past Thousand Oaks to the Rancho Conejo/Borchard exit - USE THE BORCHARD EXIT
turn right over the freeway, stay on Borchard till you get to North Reino (there's a gas station at the interersection) turn right and go in first driveway. You are there.

coming from the North (San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, San Francisco) :
Take the 101 Freeway past Camarillo - go up through a steep pass though the hills then just a few more exits till you get to WENDY. turn Right, continue on Wendy will you reach BORCHARD, make a right - stay on Borchard till you get to North Reino (there's a gas station at the interersection) turn right and go in first driveway.
Here is what she wanted you all to know....I love this lady!

When I was in high school I didn't experience a normal adolescence of going to dances or hanging with friends on Saturday nights, I had a job.

I worked every weekend at the Tikis in Monterey Park (a suburb of Los Angeles) a night club & restaurant that could accommodate up to 800 guests. It was the longest I ever stayed in one job and even though I was really a Polynesian dancer in the show I like to think of my job description as an Enchanting Tiki Maiden! Because that was what the MC insisted on calling us every show for the 6 years I worked there. Since I was only 15 and was too young even to drive a car my mom had to come along every weekend to work with me!!! The place was like a real life fantasy island! The stage was a huge volcano, which a girl jumped into at the beginning of every show. There were 7 bars, 7 dance floors each with a band, at least 7 boats full of cut up pineapples, mangos, & other tropical fruits! Every week we would return to work and the boss would have built some crazy new structure or set of caves to explore. There was a waterfall stage too, and a stunt girl would dive over the edge of that on the Tahitian side of the park.

Before the show most of the dancers had to stand next to a canoe that was filled with leis and pass them out to the people entering the club and kiss them. I couldn't count how many times men would think they were clever and say "Are you gonna lay me?" I'd just smile, say Aloha, put the lei on them and give them a kiss on the cheek because I didn't even know what they meant! One of the girls got to play a mermaid and was lowered into a gigantic fish tail every week, she would have to get on this ladder and drop into the tail then this man would throw her over his shoulder, carry her to the lagoon, wade through the water and drop her on a rock where she sat making leis and throwing flowers at the guests. I never got to do that because you had to be tall to wear the tail. I also never got to jump into the volcano darn it!!!

The choreographer was my Kumu Hula Ilima Montgomery the dances we performed were a mixture of traditional and modern Polynesian dances, we tried to educate people about Hawaiian culture and even did some Kahiko which is the ancient form of hula, in the show. We did Maori dances, I always did the 4 poi solo, had a great live band, a Samoan chief Tui who did the fire knife dance, we even got to dance a knife dance which is not commonly done by women, our show included several costume changes, we did 2 big Oteas, that is a Tahitian drum dance, and I usually got to be one of the girls who would do a Tahitian solo, an Aparima, which is a dance to a Tahitian song often referred to as Tahitian Hula, some Samoan slap dances and lots of Hulas.

When I got married and moved to Santa Cruz to go to school, my teacher told me it was time for me to think about being a teacher myself. I ended up moving into belly dance instead, I think you know the rest of that story!!!
Marjhani- TCLA 08 Instructor

Now Marjhani would like you all to know a little bit about her background.

Check it out.....

I got my first glimpse of Tribal Bellydance at the Renaissance Faire 10 years ago and fell in love with the grace and beauty of it. After my daughter came along I wanted to get out and do something and when the book for the community center showed up in the mail, I saw classes in there for Middle Eastern Tribal Dance and signed up right away. I had a great time and after a few months wanted to learn more. I went to my first event and took a workshop and was hooked from there.

I since have replaced my first teacher and still teach out of the same room I took my first lesson in. I have grown as a dancer and my career has taken me to a place where I now teach workshops throughout California, Nevada and Washington privately and at large events. I perform professionally at restaurants, private parties, community events and have grown from one class a week to 3. I have a Gothic influence in my dance which I have used to create my own signature style and helps add a flair to any of my performances. Deliverance Gothic Bellydance was created as a collaborative effort by me and Internationally known Sashi of Ascend Tribal. Deliverance performs at various Gothic Venues throughout Southern California and is growing a great following in the scene.

My greatest pride is my tribe "Oojahm" a bellydance tribe that's one of a kind. We are booked every spring as the headliner bellydance group for the original Renaissance Pleasure Faire in LA county and the Las Vegas Renaissance Faire every Fall. We are an educational re-enactment group teaching thru storytelling, music and dance. The tribe does private parties and gigs and is in high demand because of it's audience interaction skills. I was influenced to follow a traditional path by Habi Ru and Bal Anat. Some of the forerunners of the this type of tribal movement.

My biggest influences were the tribal groups that seemed to work as one unit and the dancers that really pushed the tribal movement. The first time I saw Rachel Brice I think I held my breath the entire performance, Samantha Riggs and Domba had me bouncing in my seat and Devadasi were what every girl looked for in a sisterhood. I noticed the sense of sisterhood and the tightness of the community and this just drew me in even more.

I have trained with some of the greatest dancers out there. I have taken classes from Rachel Lazarus-Soto, Politti Ashcraft, Robin Johnson and Lesa Bielman only to name a few. I hope to do them all proud with my love of the dance and the way it touches others.

FRIDAY April 25, 2008

2:00pm - 4:00pm
Marjhani "Understanding the Gothic Scene"

In this class we will discuss the different looks and sounds found in the Gothic Sub-cultures: Ethereal/Romantic/Dark Wave, Industrial, Death Rock, EBM & Powernoize. We will cover what type of movements and costuming goes with which sound as well as cover genre appropriate stage presence and space utilization.
This workshop is designed for dancers of all levels and the curious at heart.

I get some e-mails from people asking if their style of dance is "accepted" at this festival.

While Tribal Caravan (as the name implies) is a Tribal fusion focused event - folkloric, Bollywood, Goth and ATS are all welcome on our stage. Ours is not an event of exclusion. We love all dancers who can contribute to the world theme of tribal fusion. Heck, we had a hula troupe our first year! But no, is not a cabaret themed event, so just take that into consideration.

The partners of Tribal Collaborations are really feeling the excitement for this years event! A new venue, a new "crew", and a stellar line up of workshop instructors.

So let's get this party off to good start by introducing the instructors, one at a time.

First up is Freyja. Ahh....the beautiful Freyja. What else can I say that really fills the bill? How about this:

As an instructor, Freyja gives great presentation and breakdown of moves, while emphasizing proper posture and movement in order to prevent injuries and gain muscle strength. She has made an extensive study of anatomy, physiology and body mechanics, and uses this knowledge to help students master the motions and gain the needed strength and flexibility to improve their dance. Freyja’s love of therapeutic healing arts lead her to obtain her yoga teacher training certification at the acclaimed Iyengar Yoga Institute of San Francisco. She is also certified to teach mat and apparatus pilates classes by IMX Pilates. Freyja continues to study various movement disciplines and is currently focusing on the Alexander technique www.nickolasknightly.com/1alex...e.html and principles of qigong to enhance her own practice and compliment her teaching.

SUNDAY April 27, 2008
10:00am -12:00pm
Freyja's "Layering Technique"

Layering is an excellent technique used for dancing to different layers of the music at the same time. This workshop focuses on executing multiple movements simultaneously. Class begins with warm up and drills to activate muscle memory and prepare for more advanced layering. Movements are practiced individually and then combined. Emphasis is placed on proper breathing technique, traveling, layering slow movements over fast movements, slow movements over slow movements and fast movements over fast movements. Layering transitions as well as layering combinations will also be covered. Be prepared to sweat and focus on strong technique.
All levels welcome.
$30 Pre-reg. / $35 at the door

Register on-line:

This year's Tribal Caravan Pre-party will be a benefit to raise money (and awareness) for WILDLIFE DIRECT.org
They are an amazing organization founded by Richard Leakey to support the dedicated Rangers who protect the reamaining 700 Silverback Gorillas in the Congo from poachers.
Last year we raised over $1,500 for Doctors WIthour Borders and hope to surpass that amount for another well deserving cause.
BUT
You don't have to wait for the Pre-part to help this group out. These magnificent animals are being slaughtered by the Janjewi even now! You can go and take a look at ALL the wonderful work that Wildlife Direct is doing to protect many endangered species in Africa - including Elephants and Lions - even forests!
http://www.wildlifedirect.org/index.php
please take a look around at the Ranger's blogs and videos. There are opportunities to make a single donation to support them, also monthly contributions can be set up.

thank you!

** New Venue - we have MOVED!

For those who've been part of Tribal Caravan in the past, just a heads up that in 2008 we will be at our new, VERY cool location with a real stage (meaning higher up!)
We are very very pleased to have this new venue to offer and it also means this year we will be hosting an After-Party on-site!

Details about our location are on our website - but here's that info for you here and now:

Borchard Community Center
190 North Reino Rd.
Newbury Park, CA 91320

Main Event
Saturday April 26, 10:30 am - 7pm

After-Party
Saturday April 26, 9:00pm

This location is 14 miles further north than last year, about one mile from the freeway. Newbury Park one exit from Thousand Oaks and is a suburb of Los Angeles. There is more infastructure at this location , many more hotels to choose from and two vegetarian restaurants close by as well as other ethnic choices for off-site dining. We will have our Turkish Home Made food vendors on Saturday.

those of you who are regular tribers have noticed the many outages of late - so in the spirit of "preparedness' - and in NOT WAY meant to undermine tribe.net (which we LOVE and are grateful for!!!!) we have created a "back up" source for Tribal Caravan information exchange in the form of a Group on ning.com

So, JIC, please copy this link (or even go there to join for any future tribe downers)

http://triberfugeebellydancers.ning.com/group/tribalcaravan

just so we can all still stay connected

You kids who put together this festival are the best. I wanted to thank you again for everything you did for me. Even down to the "can I ask you another question" at the event and you stopped to tell me the answer, with a smile.

Thank you.

We are putting together a festival for San Diego. Damn it is complicated. You deserve medals for all your hard work and dedication. Your event was great. It is totally a reflection of how great you all are.

Thank you to the 10th power.

hi all!
so...im the chick who got hurt during sharons class on saturday...
im writing to send a huge THANK YOU to everyone at the event who jumped to my aid--i feel so lucky to have had such a terrible thing occur at the luckiest time and place ever (if that makes sense). sharon is an amazing teacher (and no i didnt get hurt because of anything she had us do) and i am so grateful for her support and the support of the ladies in the class at the time and at the event in general. i feel lucky to be part of a community that takes care of its own!
also--some kind dancer tracked me down some crutches. im hoping to be off of them this week (fingers crossed) and want to send them back. send me a message if theyre yours!
again, a huge thank you for everyones kindness and support!
marisa

You guys totally R-O-C-K! It's been such a pleasure getting to know you both and dancing with you. I feel very blessed to have stumbled into your world. Can't thank you enough for putting on this amazing event. I had a 'good' time last year, this year I had a BLAST. Admittedly Sunday was a bit of a blur, what with the anticipation of my first performance with you guys, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat!
I can hardly wait till next year and I offer you any help I may have to give to make this happen for another year.

Big SMOOCHES AND HUGS to you both, and a heartfelt thank you to all the other wonderful people who added their talents and passion to help make this event happen.

your friend in bellydance devotion,
Ziza
